Afternoon, warmer than where we should be. At least we do have calmer weather by the end of the week as we check out our high temperatures this is what you can expect a high of 75 in palo alto and oakland. San francisco will reach 72. A high of 72 today in santa rosa. Well talk more about the fire danger coming up. Mike, how is it looking now for the commute . Actually, kari, we have a very smooth commute but there is an issue that just came in through the newsroom if youre just joining us. Lets take you out to the maps where the Speed Sensors are looking great right now. No major problems. We do have the bay bridge metering lights on but light backup. The metering lights only have a backup and no major problems on the maze. Up near the top of the screen i will circle it right there, highway 12 at 160 in rio vista north of the antioch bridge. Marcus, we have a cluster of fires up there which seem to be growing. It sounds like its windy as well. Well send it off to you. Weve been hearing kari talk about it all morning, extreme fire danger continuing throughout the bay area and this morning tens of thousands of people still without power. They remain in the dark because of the latest wave of those power shutoffs. The worst hit places are in the north bay, talking about in the east bay as well. Downtown orinda, stoplights are out, businesses are closed, gas pumps shut down. Some people say they had to resort to finding ice to save their food. It takes me back to when i was a kid before we had storms and no electricity. You got used to it. Utility crews will be back at it this morning checking the lines to restore the power. So far pg e says it has been unable to fly helicopters for its inspections because of the high winds. The extreme fire will keep some parks closed for at least another day. Extending the closure of 11 regional parks in the east bay hills until 8 00 tomorrow morning. The parks are considered safe with the high winds that weve been having, up to 70 miles an hour along some of the ridge lines. We are tracking the winds and Power Outages very closely. Judge Amy Coney Barrett took the first oath following her confirmation just hours ago at the white house. Today in the bays tracie potts joins us live in washington breaking down what it all means and how it could impact the upcoming election. Tracie . Reporter hi, good morning. We already know the court has weighed in on absentee ballots in wisconsin and pennsylvania with different opinions. Now there are more cases working their way through the pipeline. The big one the Affordable Care act case a week after the election. Judge, now justice Amy Coney Barrett, will be on the bench to hear that case. Last night there was an unofficial ceremony at the white house swearing her in. Today the smaller and more private official ceremony at the u. S. Supreme court. President trump said he wanted her on the bench before the election, and it has now happened one week out. Democrats fought it and they are concerned that her conservative leaning will tip the court toward getting rid of obamacare, the Affordable Care act. She in her speech last night and confirmation tried to convince lawmakers that she will be impartial. I pledge to you and to the American People that i will discharge my duties to the very best of my ability. The American People will suffer the consequences of judge barretts far right, out of the mainstream views for generations. Our colleagues cannot point to a single senate rule thats been broken, not one. Reporter so the fight is over. She has been confirmed and she will be sworn in again and officially this morning. By the way, Justice Barrett breaking some barriers. She is the fifth woman to serve on the court, the youngest woman, the First Supreme Court justice ever to serve with school age children, doing homework while she is taking a look at the law. Struggling like the rest of us but in a pretty big position there. Thanks so much. Happening today a status update on whats been a record year for wildfires. The agency says wildfires have battled more than 7,200 this year. Consuming more than 4 million acres. Currently cal fire crews are fighting 22 wildfires across the state. The newest is the silverado fire burning in Orange County. Solano county supervisors will talk about Recovery Efforts from the lnu complex fire which destroyed nearly 1,500 structures. And santa rosa leaders will discuss a new emergency ordinance to speed up relief from the recent black fire which destroyed about 650 homes. Happening today San Francisco is expanding how many people can work out inside gyms and Fitness Studios but still with a lot of restrictions. Today in the bays kris sanchez with what to expect there. Good morning, kris. Reporter hi there, laura. You might expect its going to be rough to get through the doors today because this is not a full reopening of the gyms. Its just a grander reopening, more capacity. Now this is the first time that gyms will allow clients at 25 of capacity. The same for climbing gyms and personal services. Still no cardio or aerobics classes because all of that huffing and puffing that we do is just too risky with the spread of covid. Now gyms have specific safety requirements but youre going to want to do your part, too. Make sure you wear a mask, keep your social distance, avoid that shared equipment thats hard to sanitize, foam rollers or bands. You might want to limit Group Classes and even when they are open skip the locker rooms. Next week, in fact on election day, San Francisco will expand more services as well like pools and bowling alleys and movie theaters. They will also expand capacity for museums and zoos and aquariums so at least a little good news for folks with young children. Kris sanchez, today in the bay. Right now at 6 07 we are still tracking some of those winds that have been gusting around the bay area. I wanted to give you a closer look at whats going on in parts of the north bay as weve been watching, as mike has been telling us, some of the high winds picking up around rio vista. For the most part we are seeing a calm wind in napa. But you notice in fairfield we do see those winds coming in from the north and northeast at about ten Miles Per Hour so possibly some of the delta winds really picking up in some of those spots. Well be watching this as well as our high fire danger in the forecast. Well talk about those temperatures coming up in a few minutes. Mike, youve been tracking the impacts of that on the roadways. How is it looking right now . Kari, the main bridges where we usually have the wind advisory, not this morning, but benicia and antioch, we did get that in your report. The maps overall we have a lot of grown and even in san jose the early slowing, that pattern is the case. 84 no more slowing. 880 through hayward a little bit of a blip. Just clearing and the altamont pass, of course, we do have the slower drive there. Slowing through concord for highway 4. 37 out of vallejo and the bay bridge toll plaza. Metering lights are on but its right here this is where we have the backup, the span moves smoothly. Back to you. Thanks, mike. Coming up next for you election accuracy. The biggest Search Engine offering a new way to stay informed on election night. The fake news the new project planners say will be minimized. And a future fireplace favorite, with a chill in the air across the bay area, the Product Offering that may have your home smelling like one top secret recipe. Well tell you about it. Right now at 6 12 as we get you ready for the day in oakland, still home schooling and getting those opportunities to get outside in the backyard so let the kids get the energy out. Were starting out with some upper 50s but it will be very comfortable day but still windy. Im tracking those winds in the forecast. More coming up in a few minutes. And while kari is tracking and were watching our view from mt. St. Bruno yesterday this camera shook a lot. Today pretty steady like the flow on the San Francisco side of the bay bridge. The oakland side we, of course, have the backups thats the worst of it, though, as you approach and also some slowing coming out of the maze and rounding the turn coming off the berkeley curve. Well, good morning. Very happy tuesday to you as well. Stocks absolutely plunged on monday as investors seemed to realize two thing, first, weve been talking about this for quite some time, coronavirus nationally is getting worse, not better. And, two, theres virtually no chance of a stimulus before the election. The dow fell 650 points on monday, 2. 25 . Other indices fared a little better. Airline stocks hit very hard, anything that would be hurt by covid got hurt in the market. All this despite the rosy outlook from the white house. And were rounding the turn. They hate it when i say this. With or without the vaccine, its going to be great. We have numerous companies, all great ones. Were rounding that turn anyway. Were rounding the turn. We understand the disease. 41 states now have more people in the hospital now than last month. 42,000 americans were hospitalized just yesterday. During the Holiday Season your home may be filled with scents of Pumpkin Spice or cinnamon apple. Now, think about this, how about Fried Chicken. Yeah, believe it or not kfc is partnering with fire log so your home can smell like Fried Chicken when santa comes down the chimney. The daily mail reports this is the third year kfc has offered a chicken scented fire log and, get this, you can get it at walmart for just under 20. But Fried Chicken doesnt say holidays. We still have this high fire danger and i want to take to you Southern California where were battling the silverado fire. Okay, we dont have that video. Okay, so now we do have the video. We do have an evacuation up in Orange County. This fire has been raging out of control and this was our fear that with those high winds that have been picking up that Something Like this could happen in the bay a area but we are seeing this happen in Southern California. Well continue to monitor that as we go throughout the morning. Were still experiencing high winds. As we take a look at our current wind gusts around the bay area, for a lot of our valleys the winds are calm. Checking out mt. St. Helena where we had a wind gust at 89 Miles Per Hour. Earlier we had the wind gust. Around the bay its still going to be windy. Temperatures reaching into the low 70s in San Francisco. Some upper 70s in napa. In concord look for a high of 81 degrees. The red flag warning continues. The fashion Weather Service extended it until 5 00 this evening for the east bay hills as well as the north bay hills as were still looking at high wind gusts and some of our upper elevations. Well see our winds calming down. Napa and santa rosa has the northerly wind at 20 miles an hour. High winds in the trivalley and some of the gusts coming through the delta as well. The winds start to look lighter and we will have a slightly cooler night once the winds do calm down. As we check out our sevenday forecast for concord i wanted to show you how our trend looks over the next several days. Fairly mild today but continuing to warm up a couple of degrees and into the weekend were looking at highs that will reach into the 80s but overall over the inland areas were going to be above normal with some upper 70s and low 80s. Some much more quiet weather in the forecast after today. Mike, how is it looking for the morning commute . Looking to the roadways and the green sensors show you dont really need much help right now. Were going to skip over the trivalley because theres slowing out of the alat this month. We had overnight fires and a lot of gusty winds. Theres also a crash west highway 12 approaching 1 0. A note for the antioch bridge circling them chp gave gusty winds there an advisory. The bay bridge where the arrow is, the live look shows you the backup. Metering lights are on. Thank you, mike. Here on today in the bay, nbc bay area responds. Complain like a pro. Im chris chmura. High fire danger means power is out for thousands of people across the bay area. Today in the bays bob redell is live for us in downtown orinda. I know power was supposed to be restored there yesterday. Reporter yes, but pg e must inspect if power lines and equipment, they tried to do that yesterday, marcus, but the wind was still too much for the helicopters to get up in the air. Power out in places like orinda. The idea theyll get those inspections, power will be turned back on by today, tonight at the latest. But until then thousands of people are still without power here in the bay area. Pg e had shut off power sunday night to thousands of customers, the majority in contra costa, alameda, napa counties to prevent wildfires during the high wind event which pg e reports saw maximum gusts in the high 60s to high 80mileanhour range. Stoplights are still out. Businesses remain closed. Gas pumps are shut down. Last night people were buying ice to try to save their perishables that are in their fridge. Pg e has set up charging stations like this one to help people get through this major inconvenience. I have a generator thats broken. And i dont have anybody to fix it. If we had the generator we would have been golden. Reporter heres a look at the pg e website which shows the current Power Outages for the bay area. And we are going to continue to watch out for that. Weve all noticed the cooler temperatures and as we transition to cooler weather the winds have been roaring the past couple of days. I want to show you how high the winds got on mt. St. Helena. Earlier this morning were still at 76 Miles Per Hour. Still windy though our valleys winds have continued to calm down. Were going to be watching out for this as well as the high fire danger continuing throughout the day. Thats coming up. Mike, whats going on for the commute . Not a whole lot but i am concerned about one trivalley incident. First see how things are shaping up overall. A smooth flow of traffic around the bay area as we look at the south bay peninsula. Northbound 680 approaching 84 maybe closer to andrade. Reports a motorcycle down with a rider. The latest update i heard the rider was laying down. Im very concerned about that but chp has not given information on that. That might be okay. Well track that with fingers crossed. Still avoiding lane number four. Folks in that from the bottom four. You see how they vacate the lane. There may be a stalled vehicle. No updates from chp. Lanes are visibly moving. Back to you. Its 6 36 right now. A pretty desperate situation in Southern California. A fast moving wildfire forcing thousands from their homes. And new developments this morning on the possible cause. In washington we now have nine Supreme Court judges again, so what happens now . At 6 40 we do have a cool start with low 50s here as youre driving and may have the heater on. Looking much more comfortable with our temperatures trending to the 70s. The high fire danger coming up in a few minutes. The one involving a motorcycle. Some details lead me to believe this is a serious injury crash north 680 approaching andrade. The bay bridge toll plaza, the backup. Theyre using all lanes. Whatever is going on in the fourth lane has cleared without any further incident here. Fires burning in Southern California in orange and San Bernardino county this is the blue ridge fire that has destroyed one home. Thousands remain evacuated in the area. It is close to yorba linda. A fast moving outofcontrol wildfire is burning north of mission viejo. The silverado fire started yesterday but has burned more than 7,000 acres. Two firefighters have been critically injured and southern cal edison is saying the fire may have been sparked by faulty power equipment. Scott mcgrew, justice Amy Coney Barrett will take her place with the other eight on the bench. Theres a huge potential this could affect lots of cases that are coming before the court. Health care is certainly a big one. Whether millions of americans will have their Health Care Coverage taken away was one of the discussion points by the democrats. A key issue will barrett nominated by one of the people bring cases to the court and who was approved just eight days before the election recuse herself from election cases. We simply dont know the answer. Now, remember, the Supreme Court has decided the results of a president ial election before and its hearing cases about the election right now. The most recent dealt with voting in wisconsin. The Supreme Court decided that mailin ballots could only be counted in wisconsin if they were received by election day, not postmarked, received. And the way the judges wrote about their ruling gives us some important clues about how they think. Justice brett cave now says they could potentially flip an election. In her dissent, Justice Elena kagan said the same ballots are not flipping the election. Those ballots are the election. Its really worth looking more closely at kavanaughs words and his opinion. He says chaos and suspicions of impropriety can ensue if thousands of absentee ballots flow in after election day and potentially flip the results of the election. Its important because you may recall the court decided pennsylvania could count ballots after election day. Now why they said two Different Things about two different states has to do with the lower courts, and im not going to get into that this morning, but the key here is kavanaugh and others say they are willing to rehear that pennsylvania case if the Supreme Court blocks pennsylvania from counting all mailin ballots, democrats fear they could lose the election. Biden was back in pennsylvania yesterday where it continued to hammer President Trump on the things he says about coronavirus. Suggested the doctors were inflating the numbers. Catch this, because doctors get more money. What in the hell is the matter with this man . If somebody is terminally ill with cancer and they have covid, we report them and, you know, doctors get more money and hospitals get more money. Think of this innocecentiveince. Biden heads to georgia. President trump will be in michigan, wisconsin and in a surprise nebraska. Were tracking all that on twitter. Follow me on twitter. Voters who have somehow lost their vote by mail ballot today is the deadline to request that replacement. Thats to ensure that your ballot can be mailed back to the county election offices in time. All voters still have the option to vote in person at california vote centers until next tuesday. And voters are energized in the bay area. Some counties are seeing record level participation even though the coronavirus pandemic is changing how some of us vote. One county seeing record turnout. Santa clara county. Kris sanchez is live for us at lee vois stadium, one of those county voting centers. Kris . Reporter hi there, marcus. Lee have i levis is one in which will remain open through election day. And Santa Clara County is celebrating a milestone hitting 1 million registered voters be a counting. That is 81 of all of Santa Clara Countys eligible voters. Marin county highest at 94 . San francisco lagging behind at 76 . Everybody else in between. Thats according to the secretary of states 60 day report. Those numbers will change with the required 15day report which is expected friday. So stay tuned for that. Vote centers are new to Santa Clara County but napa voters, you already got a taste of the system in the 2018 midterm election. Because of the coronavirus pan defensemen demic them have to keep their social distance. We wonder if voters are changing the way they cast their ballots because of covid. I dont feel nervous about voting in person. I am more nervous about mailing in my ballot. Ive always voted in person. I never thought of a reason i wouldnt do that. I will go in person just because in the past mailing in ballots ive had them returned because my signature doesnt match exactly. I might drop it off in a drop box instead of the mail to be extra sure. I used to mail it. I dont mail it. I take it in now. I will vote by mail this year. Thats even changing some of my perspective on who i vote for. I will probably vote by mail. If i forget to then i will go in person. Reporter now in california you can register to vote all the way up to election day by requesting a conditional ballot. You do have to drop off your ballot or mail it by november 3rd. Just had some tabasco on my finger and it went in my eye. That wasnt good. Not good at all. One twitter user wrote this is the same pain cowboy fans are feeling watching the team play this season. Not a lot of sympathy there. Ouch. Ouch indeed. Moving on this morning, 6 49. Time to get a look at the forecast. The sun starts coming up. Meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the temperatures for us. Of course well have to deal with the wind again today, kari. Yeah, we still have high wind gusts even with this beautiful sunrise. We are starting out with some gusty winds in our upper elevations. I want to take you back through the past 24 hours and what our airports have measured anywhere from a 31mileperhour gust in san jose to a 41mileperhour gust in santa rosa. In the hills were still seeing those winds at 40 to 50 even up to 70 miles an hour the past couple of hours this morning. So even though our valleys are calming down were still seeing some of those ridge tops gusting pretty high. A look at our high temperatures for today reaching mostly into the 70s, but a few low 80s for spots like livermore and concord as well as much of the for the bay. Santa rosa will reach up to 82 degrees. Were still watching out for the high fire danger. This has been extended until 5 00 today. The red flag warning means we have high winds and very low humidity. This combination together means any fires you start could spread rapidly. All of these areas shaded in red are included in the high fire danger. We still have this High Pressure thats just off to the west of us giving us a northerly offshore wind. But then as we go into the rest of the week, were still looking at some warm weather but at least the winds will calm down significantly. So looking at our sevenday forecast expect upper 70s today. Now normal is about low 70s, so we are a little bit warmer than where we should be and that will be what we can expect going into the end of the week as well as the weekend. For San Francisco due to the offshore winds we are also very warm. No fog but well start to see the fog returning going into friday as well as saturday and that will cool off our temperatures back into the upper 60s. So im still watching those high winds. Mike, what are you watching right now for the commute . Kari, im very concerned about two crashes over on the east side of the water here. The first weve been talking about for a while. Lets look at the map. The south bay and peninsula are fine. Northbound 680, the good news is only two of your four lanes are blocked. Thats great for traffic flow. You see how jammed up it is.
