Well talk about a really big cooldown that may come along with some rain coming up in a few minutes. Mike, how is it looking now for the morning commute . Well, kari, its looking good. Im concerned about a couple spots. One of them is the Richmond San Rafael bridge. You see the backup at the toll plaza heading west to the san rafael and to the north bay out of the east bay. The issue is there was a disabled vehicle on the span but it has been cleared in the last few minutes. So we should see some good improvement over here although theres time for the build as well. Ill show you the area circled on the map for that westbound. It should improve there. The arrow shows the backup at the toll plaza because the metering lights are on and have been since 6 30. As you head over to livermore, antioch and further to the north in ukiah today. The sevenday forecast is already up. Lets talk about our air quality. Weve had a lot of smoke. We saw some improvements in our bay area but the north bay will still be unhealthy because the glass fire is burning with little containment and we are also seeing some of that smoke moving into the east bay. But then we should start to see our air quality improving by the end of the week for even those spots. Lets head over to parts of the caribbean where we have two tropical systems right now spinning and weve maxed out the whole name list for the atlantic basis. Now were talking about gamma and delta and both are Tropical Storms that may be heading into the gulf. Gamma is close to florida will meander back and forth and really not have a big steering direction. We will possibly see beta moving into the gulf and watching out for the possibility of that strengthening into a hurricane the next few days. We had a hurricane in the pacific, marie. It has continued to weaken but may as it continues to weaken the remnants of that system get drawn into an area of low pressure and move into the bay area by this weekend and enhance our chance of rain. Its really a good sign here as we can see the possibility of getting about a quarter, possibly up to half an inch of rain for much of the bay area and higher amounts for the Santa Cruz Mountains. Maybe an inch of rain that starts on friday and continues into saturday. Look how much cooler. Hot, dry, smoky in the 90s. May wrap up cooler, breezy and also some rain. Mike, what are you watch mornin . So far weve been okay. Let me explain why. As we look at the map, everything looks great. The green sensors for our speeds show pretty much at the limit all around the bay. We do have a concern, of course, theres a build in san jose coming up and also slowing out of the Altamont Pass. It looks pretty standard there for west 580. We might see more cars and still have the chance because ace train has been canceled this morning. Notice theyre suspending routes 25 and 56x because of low ridership because of the quarantine. Over here were circling the richmond to san rafael bridge that cleared from the earlier incident. He is unnecessarily endangering the lives of secret Service Agents who are there to protect him. Doctors are also raising the red flag about what the president s medical Team Revealed during their briefing at Walter Reed Hospital. Scott mcgrew, there is concern even among other medical professionals that the doctors treating the president are not being entirely straightforward. Thats right. We have very High Expectations of these doctors. They are, after all, scientists. They know that being exact in their work is very important. Particularly when theyre talking and the whole world is watching. Even when questioned about past claims the president s primary physician didnt say to the world, i wasnt trying to hide something. He said i wasnt necessarily trying to hide something. Words really matter. He had been explaining why he had been deliberately upbeat about the president s health but did not give americans an accurate picture of the president s health. You will hear from the president s physician and then another doctor who is nbc medical correspondent. I was trying to reflect the upbeat attitude that the team, the president , this course of illness has had. I didnt want to give any information that might steer the course of illness in another direction. And in doing so came off that we were trying to hide something which wasnt necessarily true. The fact of the matter is hes doing really well. He is responding and as the team said if everything continues to go well well start discharge plans back to the white house. Fact he was on oxygen, went off of it, and then dropped again for a short time is concerning. That means its affecting his lungs. If that continues and gets worse, it could be dangerous. Every person who took part in the president s car tour yesterday will have to isolate for 14 days because they were directly exposed to a patient who we know, who they knew, had covid. Now if the president does return to the white house today, it raises more concerns about endangering others even if he does stay in isolation, which he is supposed to do. The first lady is doing well, according to those same doctors. Joe biden continues to test negative as does the Vice President. Tens of thousands of californians are still waiting for their unemployment checks since the pandemic started. A huge part of the problem, the Employment Development department, couldnt handle the work load. But thats all supposedly now fixed. The department shut down for two weeks in order to try to get things back in order but the question now, is it going to work . Today in the bays bob redell is checking it out. Reporter well, good morning to you, kris and laura. Think about this number, this is how great the backlog is for unemployment. As of september 30th, this was last week, almost 1. 6 million californians have been waiting for their unemployment checks. So today if youre recently unemployed within the past couple weeks you should be able to logon and file your new claim. Again, this is for recently unemployed people. Governor newsom ordered the edd department to stop processing new unemployment claims the past week so the state could catch up on the backlog that i mentioned that was created by the pandemic and allow the state to improve technology. The state has upgraded a system to help speed up benefit payments, reduce fraud and get to that backlog faster. The mercury reports new technology to verify an applicants identity and would automate the process and free up people for other tasks. The state has been overwhelmed by claims. About 8. 8 million californians have filed for unemployment since the shutdown began. Nearly 4. 6 Million People between march and may alone filed for unemployment. Thats almost double the great recession. That twoweek reset period ends today. If you lost your job within the past couple of weeks, you should be able to log on to the state Employment Development Department Website to file your claim. Reporting live, bob redell, today in the bay. Thanks so much, bob. Its 6 49 right now. Well check that monday morning commute coming off a pretty decent weekend. Kari has a look at our forecast for today. We did start to see our air quality improving across much of the bay area yesterday afternoon. And so were starting out with some fog, higher humidity. All great news in the forecast as we start out with low visibility and were also seeing the clear skies above. Just watch out for that fog especially as you head out in oakland, parts of the north bay from napa and santa rosa where visibility is now down to a quarter of a mile. And so that low visibility also boosting up the humidity and will help keep it cooler for today. The high tempera it will still be hot in concord right now where its clear, reaching up to 90 degrees for a High Temperature today. 85 in san jose. 82 in palo alto. 92 in morgan hill. Also 92 today in ukiah. As we go through the forecast we are going to see still some smoky air for the north bay as the glass fire continues. Its been moving to the east bay as well. Then for the bay and the coast as well as down to the south bay weve seen some better air quality and that continues. Now lets head to whats happening in the Atlantic Basin as we track two tropical systems here. Tropical storm delta and Tropical Storm gamma. Both are expected to head towards the gulf over the next couple of days. While we start to see the system bringing some rain over florida, meander over the gulf over the next few days. It looks like well start to see the other tropical system with much more strengthening in the forecast as it heads in that direction over the next few days. Ive also been tracking a couple tropical systems in the pacific and one that continues to weaken is marie further to the south. As it does so, it will be drawn in by another area of low pressure that could enhance our chance of getting some rain by the end of the week. This is really good news because we could see at least a decent shot of rain for northern california.
