I was so excited i was like what what what this is the song she sang on sesame street. What okay, so then some people in texas threw a boat parade in honor of donald trump. And i was like, what a boat parade . Do you think common sense cant find you out in the middle of a lake well, apparently it cant. Because during the parade, they were whipping around too fast and they created a bunch of big waves, and that caused five of who wont wear masks to keep their Community Safe also wont not ride around like mad men to keep their fellow boaters alive. Hes going to get it then while this lady was asking a question, trump interrupted please stop and let me finish my question, sir and i was like, what . Whoo then herman cain tweeted from the dead and i was like, what . Then i saw something i could not believe. Okay, so theres a new xmen game called marvel future fight. And i was like, ooh, what . But then i saw the icon for the character storm. Now before i show you this, you should know that storm is a black woman. Like her dad is africanamerican and her mother is a kenyan princess black and if youre a black woman who grew up loving xmen, it means a lot to you that she looks black. Okay, you ready now . Seth i know, you can have him. You can borrow him any time you want im sure hed love to be a part of it. Nice. Seth i know you are in a different part of the world right now. What time is it where you are . Yeah, its about 6 30 in the morning. But im up for you, seth seth this is this is a true a true act of friendship if theres ever a way i can be up at 6 30 in the morning for you, please do not ask oh, i will. Dont you worry. Seth one thing that breaks my heart about having to do this remotely is you were my son ashs first concert. Thats right. Seth he came here to watch you rehearse last time you were on the show. And heres a photo photographic proof theres my son, ash. I dont know why im pointing. Its very clearly the only child in this picture. Well. Seth but hes he to this day is a huge keith urban fan, so thank you for that. Oh, thats cool seth its been a little tricky, you know, hosting a show. Obviously, has been strange during these times but you took on a hosting job as well at the Country Music awards it was fantastic obviously a lot of, you know, hurdles to get over. Did you enjoy doing it it i was grateful i could do it. I mean, its i was thinking the other day, you guys are now just pros at talking to just the camera with no people, right youve been doing it through this whole period. And for me it was it felt like somewhere between a zoom and a rehearsal, you know . It was just an unusual feeling to have nobody in the audience and to keep remembering that everybodys right there in the camera but i really was grateful i got to do it, and really enjoyed the show seth you i think its true, you know obviously too, you know im used to maybe having 188 people in here. But youre used to playing, you know, giant, giant groups of people have you missed that yeah. Yeah its i mean, 2020 is just one long sound check, for me i mean, its its just i miss the energy of real humans down the front you know what its like. Its the same for you. Doesnt really matter what the numbers are, its just theres no substitute for that energy that comes from real people, not sort of avatars. Seth i know this was an album that you named it. You started it last year and i guess maybe, if my facts are right, you were about halfway done when the whole world turned upside down how did it affect the completion of the album, the way the world changed . Yes, your facts are right i probably had, i dont know, about 70 of the album done. And yeah, the strange part was the title coming to me last year because it does sound like we sort of it was about this year, but it was like october last year that i just found everything starting to careen faster and faster wherever i went, you know, around the world. And it was just indescribable. Feeling that way about society, people, life in general, like its just going too fast the speed of now was a sort of dig at the absurdity that even the present moment has a speed now. Its meant to be free of time. And even that has a speed. So the album was called that, and then suddenly, you know, march this year, it takes on a whole new meaning. But i just doubled down on that. And we wrote songs through that period luckily, i got a studio at the house. You know that kept me able to make the record and kept me from going crazy. And everything i would have done on the road touring, i just channeled into the studio, and it ended up on this record seth you know, obviously, people have had to get creative with things like how do make music, how to shoot videos, how to interact with their fans. Early on, one of the televised benefits for first responders, you had a very creative presented performance where you basically, three i think, three or four keith urbans showed up at once yes seth have you found i personally have found you know, im glad to be back in the studio, but it is kind of fun to figure out new ways to, you know, create with these incredible walls that are around us right now you know, and im sure you experienced this too theres times when its really fun and times when its totally exhausting because it doesnt stop you come up with an idea, like we did for that performance of local citizen where we were able to triplicate myself because we have a green screen set up at our warehouse. And as simple as that shot looked, it took two days to do and then youre like, great, heres another show. Come up with another idea. Heres another one, heres another one. And youre like, oh, man. I know you guys have been going through it too, seth its it can be fun, and it can be completely stressful. And i think, if anything, it just always keeps me bringing me back to the moment. Like, all i have to do is this thing right now. Lets just think of this thing, come up with this thing, worry about Everything Else down the track. But its definitely its spurred on insane amounts of creativity and to some degree, i actually think its that sort of like, necessity is the mother of invention. So having limited resources has forced even more intensive creativity especially for somebody like me. Seth i know nashville is an incredibly supportive community. I know theres a lot of crosscollaboration with different artists, across genres as well. And this is true of your newest album too, yeah . Yeah. Yeah, weve got a song on here got a couple of collabs, actually, several collabs. I did a song with eric church. Weve done a couple before but i also have a song out right now with pink called one too many. And a new artist named breland who i came upon late last year, early this year. We wrote a track which is the opening song called out the cage which i think everybody will relate to when they hear it it also features nile rodgers. Theres a few collabs going on seth when you find new artists like that, are they do they believe its you when you call and say, hey, this is keith urban, and id like you to work on the opening track of my album . I read an interview with breland. And i was so fascinated by him and i didnt know id never met him, so i just got through a friend of a friend, and sort of got his phone number isnt it weird how were able to get peoples numbers, seth its kind of creepy, right if you want to get somebodys phone number, you can probably get it thats kind of creepy. Seth it is really creepy it is you kind of its like you join this club, and suddenly you can get peoples numbers anyway, i called him i texted him first to let him know it was me and i was going to be calling and stuff. And we talked for like 45 minutes about music and just hit it off. And next thing i know, hes in my studio, and were writing a song, then another song, then another song and it just really, really hit a stride hes incredible. Seth thats great. I should note ive tried for years to get your number and have had no success. Ill give to it you now its 32. Did that come through all right . Im sure it did. Seth oh my god, i cant ank. And back to the screen, dot, okay seth i was really happy. The last time i saw you doing something live, you appeared on snl. There was a little return of Debbie Downer. And Debbie Downer was, like, ahead of the curve as far as how bad things were going to get well, kind of because so everything was so bad then that like a lot of my friends, you should do Debbie Downer. Lorne let us do a Debbie Downer. And i came in with, like, a big mask, and it was like, ha ha ha and then, like, that was a saturday and then literally, like, three days later the whole world shut down like, thats how fast everything happened and then i was kind of like seth yeah. This isnt funny. So anyway, but at the time, you know, there was a lot of tension afoot and all that, so yes seth we forgot that Debbie Downer reached seth debbie is one of the overlooked horsemen of the apocalypse [ laughter ] i think so. Seth when she shows up, bad things happen. Debbies got her finger on the pulse of all bad [ bleep ], stuff. Seth that is yeah, i like that the bat signal for debbie is things are so bad, we think we can throw a sketch together for her. [ laughter ] exactly exactly. And now it just writes itself every day. Seth yeah, exactly everybody says donald trump sketches write themselves . Really i would argue Debbie Downer are the ones that are for sure. Seth what was the last i know you were a great supporter of the theater and broadway what was the last thing you saw live the last thing i saw live i saw the musical west side story. Also poehler and i went and saw hall oates because i was on a i was on a big retro, like, you know, High School Music thing seth where did you see hall oates at Madison Square garden with squeeze. Seth oh, thats fantastic. I mean, you i mean, you guys have always presented as the hall oates of comedy, you and poehler. I think poehlers not going to like it that im, you know, saying that hall oates was the last concert she saw seth oh, yeah. You think she wants Something Like cooler out there she wants something edgier, you know no offense to hall oates seth we should say after that, like, she went down to the east village and saw some, like, death metal nordic death metal band yes, nordic death metal, thats cool. Seth you went home but she went out i went home and had some tea, yes. Seth eli, i cannot believe your son eli is 10 just turned 10, yes seth so you, like many parents, are having to usher his way through zoom school, im sure yes so we had, you know like everyone, we had a big chunk of that in the spring and wasnt easy like everyone says so but i got to the point where, like, you know, his homework became my homework. So id be like, oh, no, we have to do math today. And then, like, he would get these extra art assignments which just made my heart sink. Because its like, hes not going to be cutting a cereal box to make a basket, like, im going to be doing that so i was really started to dread all of the extra art projects because im not that good at that seth do you think that eli is aware of that and that, you know, theres a its contagious that your dread then transfers to him . Or would he have dreaded it anyway no, i think we have mutual you know, we are a mutual wed pass the hot potato of meltdowns, school meltdowns. [ laughter ] sometimes it was me, sometimes it was him, yeah seth i know one thing that you have used to maybe avoid the meltdowns is video games i think this is something that you are allowing eli to partake in hows that going right, okay, so last year i had a pretty good system down. I was like, you cant play video games during the week, during the school week. I was pretty proud of myself because for the most part he but then all this happened then that all went out the window and he became very into fortnite, which i didnt know. I just want to like moms of young kids, if you can avoid fortnite at all costs, it is like heroin to kids. [ laughter ] so it has a lot of addictive qualities. At first i was just opposed to the guns then the guns just become secondary to the addiction because it, like, keeps them on it so weve had a lot of conflicts about trying to tear him away. But its like also the way that they talk to each other. He can talk to his friends so it became a social thing. This has become seth thats sort of how youre justifying it its the socialization yeah. Exactly. Yes. Seth its like its like, yeah, my you know, i dont want my kids to take heroin, but thats like how they see their friends [ light laughter ] when you put it like that it doesnt sound so good. But yes. Thats basically what its come down to. And now he plays a lot seth it seems it seems so long ago now, but when this first started, some of my first guests, after we shut it all down, were poehler and maya. And we were talking about the talent show. I know the sort of the snl women of that era, your kids did a zoom talent show yeah. Seth is eli does he have characters . Well, he does but what happened was, abel just wrote up a sketch and handed him a script abels amys son abel wrote a political sketch. I think eli was playing Elizabeth Warren and abel was shoot, i forget who abel was playing it was a guy but anyways, so they did some political comedy seth gotcha. How was it annas son did magic and mayas kids had some, like, sort of fencing, sword fight thing. [ laughter ] anyway and tinas daughter did gymnastics so a lot of different talents happening. Seth yeah, thats a very i mean, thats like bang for your buckwise, if you can get fencing and gymnastics and sort of like trenchant political commentary, thats a really good show yeah, thats not happening anywhere else on the internet. Seth i think mo willems, if you have kids, you know exactly who that is. And if you dont, you wouldnt have any reason to but hes a wonderful storybook author yes seth and you did a Live Performance of a show. Was that and this is, again, in front of a Live Audience before the world turned upside down yeah. Seth was it so much fun . It was a lot of fun seth yeah. Did you did eli come . I feel that would be friendly to a i know, he didnt come. Seth why not so i dont know, he didnt feel like it was in d. C seth oh, okay, thats fair he didnt want to take the trip then i wish hed been there. Yeah, okay seth i mean, you would think, you know, for a kid who does political comedy, hed like a trip to the Nations Capital i know, he would. Well, maybe hell have to watch it, yeah seth im sure when you were gone he didnt take advantage of his video games. Probably, yeah. Seth hey, this is like game shows are one of the things that are coming back and youve been participating in some game shows. Do you enjoy do you enjoy that because i think i would not enjoy that okay, so yeah the game shows are, like, one of the first things to come back. So i really like playing 100,000 pyramid, you know, when im called to do it, when im called for that service, to go play pyramid. So i just did that with anna gasteyer, is the other celebrity. And yeah, thats so thats fun. And then i just did another show for quibi that where you guess if things were cake or not and that was also with anna. Seth how does it work that you guess if somethings cake or not . Okay, its called eye candy. Its based on a japanese show. Im not hosting this or anything, i was just a contestant, whatever, a celebrity guest. But then, like, you see seth im not accusing you of hosting a television show. I mean, i wish i was hosting, i wish this was my gig because i want to, like, do a lot of game shows now. I just like the game so you decide if somethings cake or not with your partner. And then like the way you tell if its cake is that they have you bite it so like and these look so real so sometimes you bite into like whatever, this metal thing, and its actually cake other times youre biting and its just metal and thats how you find out seth it seems to me you must have to sign a release if theyre letting you bite into metal. I heard they have a dentist on call. My teeth were fine but this is my thing now im at the point of my career where i think pandemic and plus, i dont know, sheer laziness, i just want to go play game shows seth is there an intruder coming into your home . What . Seth you keep looking off to the side, im wondering is there a Home Invasion taking place . Because youve been if you want to go deal with that. No, i think i think im just looking for a fake audience or something im looking for reinforcement. Its like a seth oh, man a pavlov dog thing. Seth welcome to my life.
