More than 70,000 people under evacuation orders. Fire officials are giving an update on the glass fire in santa rosa. Once that press Conference Begins we will bring that to you live during our newscast. I want to talk about the entire town of calistoga. It is still under that mandatory evacuation order. More than 5,000 people are out of their homes. Reporter good morning. Its a situation that folks here in calistoga are all too familiar with. Just driving through town, you can see the roads are more empty than they typically would be and many of those businesses have shut their doors. Its because of that mandatory evacuation because of whats happening just over my shoulder, weve been here since about 4 00 this morning. And this particular hill has been calmed and reignited and calmed and reignited. And now its a huge plume of smoke that weve seen the last 45 minutes. This is just one example of the impeding danger folks here in calistoga are under. Weve had crews here since last night when those evacuation orders were issued. And you can see the communicatioconditions in this area have been dangerous. Take a look at the video that was posted to twitter it. Shows what a drive near calistoga looks like with those alltoo familiar views. And this town is already witnessed devastation caused by the fire. Take a look at the video portion of the wellknown winery that was damaged by the flames. The owners there say it will now cost millions to repair that renowned winery. Yet, still folks have decided to stay back whether its out of convenience or really just wanting to protect their home. Take a listen to what one calistoga woman says her reasoning behind it is. Shes going to walk us through her decision. And we get back here and we wake up sunday morning to smoke and everything. Its like, okay, deja vu, but we know what to do. And we prepared ourselves. Like i say if the fire does get closer to us, then we will leave. Reporter and back out here live, really the only cars driving on this road are First Responders. But looking at that hill again, it is the smoke that just continues to get thicker. And its only a matter of time before this hill reignites like its done throughout this morning. Again weve been out here since 4 00 on the way here i hit four police stops just to get to this location. So, Law Enforcement taking that evacuation very seriously here in the town of calistoga. Cierra johnson for nbc bay area news. All right, cierra, thank you. The governor now declaring a state of emergency. This is after a recordsetting 3. 7 milli 3. 7 million acres have burned in california during those wildfires this year. The glass fire complex and zogg fire are adding to what is already devastating wildfire season. 68,000 people are under evacuation orders in Sonoma County alone due to the complex fire. It is estimated another 10,000 people under evacuation orders in napa county. And right now we want to go to that press conference we were telling you about. Okay, were going to go to weather first . Okay, lets go to that press conference because i want to get an update on what theyre talking about. Theyre giving an update on the glass fire. Cal fire, the Napa County Sheriffs Office as well as the Sonoma CountySheriffs Office. This is being coordinated under the management of Cal Fire Incident Management Team three under the direction of commander billy c. That is a type one federally rated team that manages largescale disasters. We can confirm this morning that 80 structures singlefamily residents have been destroyed between the two counties. 28 of those are in Sonoma County. 52 of those are in napa county. 32 minor structures have been destroyed. 15 of which are in Sonoma County. And 17 in napa county. There are damage inspection teams here on site as you know from other fires. There is a little bit of a delay time from the time they get here in place to the time they actually get the numbers caught up to what the final statistics will be. Theres a lot of work to move trees and powerlines to get in there. As of this morning we have 1,474 personnel that includes cal fire, federal firefighters as well as local government firefighters from throughout california. This morning we have a lineup of speakers representing different agencies. Just to start things off from the Cal Fire Incident Management Team 3 is an Operations Update from operation section chief mark brenton. Good morning. Weve taken the fire and split it into a twozone fire for operational control. The east zone is all in napa county. Wes zone is Sonoma County. Just take you around the horn as far as the activity of the fire, we do have significant fire situation in Division Hotel and juliet, northeast part of the fire threatening the community of angwin. And then also burning towards pope valley. We have aircraft working there aggressively this morning to help mitigate that. And working resources into that area very steep, treacherous terrain around the palisades area to get our control lines in and established. Yesterday was pretty much a running battle within the Community Ground resources, we were able to keep the fire checkup as best we can around the community of angwin. Moving down through deer park, the fire did proceed to deer park in the first 24 hours of the incident causing significant damage. And its continuing to burn in this direction and starting to work on checking it up in this ranch november area. Throughout the highway 29 corridor, the fire spotted got into a lot of light flashy fuel wheres it was very receptive. Did destroy a number of structures in there and made significant runs. We were able to catch it at certain locations throughout. And theyre continuing along the highway 29 corridor and hot spots that are still around a lot of the structures. Moving onto the west zone. Theic the calistoga road area is an area where we are trying to punch control lines just before the county line into napa county to herd the fire around that western part of that. Calistoga road is looking pretty good. We were able to suppress it or the fire was able to selfmitigate. The highway 12 corridors a very similar situation there. We do have fire in the state park. We did a fire operation last night. We have had good success in mitigating that factor within the state park. Moving up into the other part of the zone, we do have fire established up into the sugar loaf state park. And thats an area of concern for us. Right now were concentrating efforts as best we can there. And then using some old control lines from the 2017 fire and bringing that in to connect it into the white hole lane area. With the conditions so far were unable to do any flights in the west zone, which is the Sonoma County area. We have some clear air up in this part of the branch area and were flying our aircraft actively with the aircraft we have available at hand. Speaking next from cal fire Management Team 3 is Incident Commander billy c. Good morning. On behalf of myself and my deputy bob freas, obviously we have multiple unified Incident Commanders. We brought in a chief from the Santa Rosa CityFire Department into unified this morning and well be in discussions with Santa Rosa CityPolice Department as well as some other outlaying agencies including calistoga fire and pd, well be talking with them later on today. Obviously this fire is 42,000 acres and change at this point. Sitting in that wild line interface area. And here in california with all those interface areas, these fires become very disastrous with the amount of structures and populous thats impacted. Currently we have multiple priorities incident not only over in the napa valley area but trying to keep it out of pope valley and all the Populated Areas in and around that as well as trying to protect the city of santa rosa the best we can and limit the spread of this fire. The footprint of this fire has occurred in between the 2017 tubbs, and adobe fires. We are having to utilize some of those control lines on the outer edges to put in on this fire. This land has no fire history thats recorded. This burned in all the acreage that was saved in 2017. So when, it came over the ridge into Sonoma County into the city of santa rosa, this is all unburned vegetation that did not burn in 2017. So, its created a problem for the firefighters. Its been a long season. Most of them have been going since the middle of july without rest from fire to fire to fire here in the northern part of the state. So, were doing the best we can with the resources we have on the incident. Were looking out for the safety and welfare of all the firefighters as well as treating safety of all the residents that live in and around the fire areas is our number one priority. Thank you. Speaking next from the city of santa rosa, police chief ray navarro. Good morning. I just wanted to give you a brief update on whats going on here within the city as it relates to Law Enforcement activity. Last night our Police Department officers are still in an emergency schedule. So we have all our officers that are addressing Public Safety needs. Fortunately, i have some good news. We have no traffic collisions that are related to any of the Power Outages over the last 24 hours. And we have not had any reported burglaries or confirmed looting incidents within the evacuation zones. Additionally, weve had a few missing person reports that have come in. Fortunately, all of those missing persons have been located. If you do need to report a missing person, we do ask you to call our santa rosa Police Department dispatch at 7075285222. As a reminder, all evacuation orders and warnings are still in effect today. If you live within city limits and you are unsure of where you live or unsure where the designated warning zones or evacuation zones are, please go to our website at srcity. Org evaczones. Remember our evacuation orders means that its unlawful to enter the area because it is unsafe. We ask you to continue to obey those evacuation orders as we move forward. That includes the road closures. Santa rosa residents should continue to monitor our emergency alerts again. And we ask you to go to srcity. Org glassfire. Were continuing to watch over and maintain our safety for the community in the evacuation zones, and were using our officers and mutual aid from other agencies. So we thank the mutual aid officers from the other agencies who are helping us out. And again a reminder, its very important to understand that we will not tolerate looting and or any intent to loot. Our officers are out there to address people who are not authorized to be in the evacuation zones. And if there is looting or people not supposed to be there, we will take enforcement action. Thank you very much. Rosa fire tony gausner. Hello, everyone. Santa rosa fire chief. I just want to let everyone know since the start of this incident on sunday, we have recalled everyone in the santa rosa Fire Department, and theyre still on duty today. As well as we have done two all calls for all Fire Agencies in the Sonoma County area. I know napa county did the same type of all call on sunday. So i just want to let everyone know that every available firefighter that could work came to work and went to work and most of them are still out there supporting the incident. Its been a long two days for everyone. We are in total support of team 3. Theyre an Excellent Team to help manage this fire. And our priorities remain as much as putting this fire out maintaining perimeter control, making sure that we can repopulate in a safe, efficient manner. So for all of you that are outside of the fire zone that are evacuated we are working on this plan as we speak. Given what the weather gives us and what kind of fire activity we have. But we understand that the population that is out of their residence, while it is inconvenient, it is very important that you stay out of the area. We have multiple fire and law agencies moving in and around all of the fire areas, and we need to get there in a timely fashion. So please stay out of the area if you can. I really appreciate it. If you go to srcity. Org glassfire, you can get all the updated information from the city of santa rosa resulting from the glass fire. And really this is your time to kind of pay attention. Were going to be in this for a couple of weeks is my take on th means its going to be kind of long and its going toeth, take care of yourself, take care of your neighbors and make sure that youre doing everything you can to be part of the solution. Thank you so much. Next is Sonoma County sheriff. Good morning. Before i get started today, i want to acknowledge something that were all dealing with, and that is some significant fire fatigue. We are nearing the threeyear mark of the tubbs fire that devastated our community. This is the fourth major fire in our Community Since 2017. Many people are feeling the effects. Many people are evacuating. Theyve evacuated multiple times. And i just want everybody to know that we continue to support you throughout the Sheriffs Office and through all of our Public Safety partners to help you answer your questions and guide you to safety. The Sheriffs Office primarily responsibility is the evacuations. And we certainly appreciate the Rapid Response that weve received from people who have heeded those evacuation warnings and moved out of the area. The Sheriffs Office, we have all hands on deck. We have in addition to our normal patrol staffing we have over 50 deputies in the field right now patrolling evacuation zones, directing people to safety, and answering questions for them. Weve also partnered with our other Public Safety agencies santa rosa Police Department, and the california Highway Patrol to work with Traffic Control points and checkpoints to keep your neighborhood safe. The three things that you can do right now to continue to help us help you is to sign up for map there. You can go to socoemergency. Org, enter your address and determine if you are in an evacuation zone. Second, you can follow us on facebook, twitter and instagram to stay informed. They are there to supplement official information put out by soco emergency. Org. And, please, take the evacuation warnings serious. If you are in an evacuation, mandatory evacuation area, please, you should pack up and leave. You should be gone. If youre in a warning area, we want you to have your go bags ready, your emergency kits ready, including medication, pets, and Important Documents so that youre ready to go at a moments notice. As the fire officials have told you today this fire still is unpredictable, its fast moving and we want you to be prepared. Thank you very much. Well talk on your neighbors especially the older your get around as well. Please check in on them and make sure they are prepared as well as you are. Thank you. Speaking next from the Napa County Sheriffs Office is undersheriff john crawford. Good morning. Im not going to rehash what the other chiefs and the sheriff essick referred to. Its all good advice. First what id like to say is thank you for all the help that were getting, and it seems like we havent properly thanked everybody three or four weeks ago, and here we are again saying thank you. So thank you to cal fire, to all of our allied agencies and to our outside mutual aid requests that have been filled by other agencies outside the napa county area. I would just mention that since the fire has started, our deputies and other officers have been actively working with cal fire performing evacuations, manning road closures and in general just trying to keep people as safe as we can. Wed like to remind one thing i will build on is that these roads have been significantly impacted. There are falling trees, power poles that are down. So please understand that its just not safe for us to allow people in these evacuated areas right now. And then, lastly, the importance of the highlow siren. If you all remember, weve had these sirens installed in our vehicles here in napa county as well as in Sonoma County. It admits a distinctive twotone sound, which indicates its time to evacuate. So in those areas and the areas of deer park and napa county where service is spotty, internet might be spotty, please remember if you hear that siren, its time to evacuate. Thank you. Next speaking from the california Highway Patrol is captain wolf. Good morning. Im your local chp commander here in Sonoma County. The Highway Patrol, as always, is upstaffing for this incident, both in sonoma and napa county. Were drawing resources in from all over the chp counties and other chp jurisdictions. We want to support the sheriffs department. We are manning Traffic Control points, and we are also making sure that we are staffing enough to continue to keep you safe on our roadways. We recognize that these are trying times for everyone. Weve been through this before in this county and in napa county, and its difficult, but we need you to be patient. The best way to stay safe on the roadways are to keep informed with your local traffic updates, any social media sources you may have, and socoemergency. Org. Take a look, and their napa counterparts. You want to take a look at those conditions because theres no fast way around these closures. The best way to get around them efficiently and keep your life as normal as possible is to plan ahead, know the routes, use a w your way back towards those locations rather than try to take small roads where you may get stuck and frustrated and have to turn around. Again, we ask you to exercise patience. We also want you to exercise Good Behavior on the roadways as weve seen in these evacuations, people have been very orderly, very cooperative because we know thats the best way to get through this. So thank you for your patience and support, and stay sonoma strong. Our final formal speaker from the cal fire sonoma lake napa unit is unit chief jones. Thank you all for listening in today. Its very important that you do so. A lot of information is given to you about the incident here. I have good news and i have bad news. So the bad news is i am standing in front of you once again to talk to you about the fires that are happening in sonoma and napa county. The good news is that the folks behind me, the folks that you dont see in your camera in front of me and everyone out there, the support staff that are supporting you, the evacuees, theyre all here for you. Theyve all done an amazing job. Theyre very exercised. Theyre the most professional that we have. Your local resources, cal fire, and all of our cooperators have been exceptional to make sure that we put this fire out, to get you home efficiently, and back in your homes safely. I know that this has been a large impact on all of you. And for those of you that are evacuated and for those of you whove lost your home, my heart goes out to all of you. Everyones doing their best to get you home safely and to put the fire out. Most of the folks here, team 3, that is standing behind you, you heard chief c. Talk to you. He was here along with his team during the tubbs, the atlas, all of those fires in 17. So this team well knows the area and whats at stake. So, i want you to feel good about the folks that are here and all of our local cooperators. So think about it. This fire started on theth about 4 00 in the morning. Were at 42,000 acres covering two counties. That is a lot of territory. Its a lot of work. So thank you for your patience. I also ask you just as though our cooperators behind me have mentioned is that you need to have a plan. We still have months to go for fire season. And that means that this can happen again. I pray to god it does not. But we still have a lot of fire season to go. So ready for wildfire. Org is a place that you can go to identify and start with a plan so that youre ready to go. Adhere to those warnings. Adhere to the orders. A garden hose is not going to protect your home. You need to leave so that we, the First Responders in the field, can protect you. So life, property, and homes and in that order. If youre in your home and you have not evacuated, our First Priority is life safety. So, please do your part. Thank you very much for tuning in. This team will still have information every day to allow you the opportunity to get the most updated information. Also on fire. Ca. Gov theyre getting us up to date with whats happening with the glass fire. 42,000 acres have burned. 0 containment. Some 80 structures have been destroyed because of that fire. Of course were going to keep monitoring that press conference and were going to have more throughout our extended version of todays midday newscast. Coming up for you, meteorologist kari hall, she goes over those conditions that firefighters are dealing with right now. Well be right back. Thanks for joining us as we are going on for another half hour to bring you the latest on those fir fires burning in the north bay. Im marcus washington. Cal fire just held a News Conference and here is the latest information that we just got. The glass fire has burned more than 42,000 acres. It continues to burn out of control. 52 homes have been destroyed in napa county. 28 are gone in Sonoma County. We do know that more than 70,000 people are under evacuation orders. The entire town of calistoga under mandatory evacuation orders as well. More than 5,000 people there out of their homes. Nbc bay areas cierra johnson, shes live there for us this midday. And certainly a tough time for anyone in that area right now. Reporter good morning. Yes. A very tough time for the folks here inical stoega. This is something thats not foreign to them. Theyve done it before, and many of them left before they were even told to. I just want to give you an idea of the fluidity of the situation the last half hour i was telling you that all morning weve been seeing those flames and before we went on air those flames were gone. Well, just within the last ten minutes the flames on this hill that weve been observing all morning have returned. So this is what the folks in this town are dealing with just the complete uncertainty of everything. But we have had crews in this area since last night when those orders were issued. And as you can see, conditions in this area very, very dangerous. The extent of this fire has also been shared throughout social media. Take a look at this video that was posted to twitter. It shows what driving near calistoga looks like last night with those alltoo familiar views. And folks here have already witnessed the devastation caused by the fire. A portion of the well known winery castillo amarosa was damaged by those flames. The owners say it will cost millions to repair. Yet, folks here have decided to stay back. Take a listen to one woman walk us through her decision to stay. And we get back here and we wake up sunday morning to smoke and everything. So its like, okay, deja vu, but we know what to do. And we prepared ourselves. Like i say if the fire does get closer to us, then we will leave. Reporter and, again, back out here, this town pretty empty. The only vehicles youre seeing are really those First Responders. This looks like a guy transporting some water here. But in the distance that fire on the hill, this is the concern. This is why folks here in calistoga are being asked to leave. Were live in
