Well have to wait until sunday before the heat cranks up. The winds will happen a little bit before that for isolated parts of the bay area. Let look at the setup. High pressure building in this drier wind coming down from the north and the east. Its the circulation around that High Pressure thats going to push down the drier wind and were getting hotter air from the south. The red flag fire warning for the forth east and parts of the south bay hills but i want to be clear on this. The highest risk of the gustier winds will be at 1,000 feet and above. Thats where well have the best chance of 20 to 50 mile per hour wind gusts coming out of the north and east and a sustained or steady wind 10 to 20 and low humidity down to 10 or 20 . As we focus on the wind, homostf saturday isnt bad. Look at the key at the top. Once we get to 1 11 00 at night on saturday, winds pick up. Not that gusty in the north bay but to the north, you can see the orange to red color. 30 to 40 mile per hour wind gusts to the forth. As we approach early sunday morning around 3 00 in the morning, Higher Elevations in that red to pinkish color, thats when we could get into 40 to 50 mile per hour wind gusts there in the north bay again on sunday morning. Were tracking more of this wind forecast. Well also have details on the air quality tomorrow and why i think its not going to be nearly as bad as what weve experienced lately. Were way up here near Mount Hamilton where you can see the dry vegetation up close and looming fire danger sweeping in. A birds eye view of the south bay shows smog and even lingering smoke that put san jose in a hazy soup with the ingredients for fire danger. The National Weather service will add a red flag warning tomorrow and not just because of the heat. Thats because of hot, dry winds blowing through the area. They will be coming down off the diablo range behind us and blowing across the valley pushing hot air from the Central Valley to the san jose area. Reporter like the san jose fire department, cal fire is also adding extra staffing this weekend throughout the bay area and making sure there is plenty of water and other sports drinks available for crews. There are still a lot of local crews at active fires and firefighters are concerned how the hot temperatures will impact ones contained but smtill smoldering. There are still pockets in the fires with a reburn where the vegetation may burn completely and could start back up a. Reporter the bay Area Management district says it will be watching conditions very closely although air quality is okay now, the extremely hot temperatures can change everything. The vehicle mixes with the sunlight and creates ozone or smog at ground level and can be dangerous and youll notice itching eyes, scratchy throat and can exacerbate respiratory issues that already exist. Reporter the city and Public Health department are poised to open cooling centers but if the heat and bad air isnt enough, if youre going to use the cooling centers, safety precautions for covid will be strictly enforced. Last night oca federal court issued a new order to block the trump administrations plan to end the count early. It really is about not letting our guard down as we get earlier in the summer as we watch some of these numbers trend in the direction that we dont want to see, which is upward. 14day Positivity Rate in california is 3 , which is far lower than just a few months ago. The key now is making sure that number doesnt go up. With this renewed concern about fire danger, there are still thousands of families trying to recover from our fires earlier this month. They need help and theyre getting it from various communities. Many fire victims who lost their homes are heading to downtown lose los altos. Outside is fairly busy but inside the store, thats the story. The dining room is closed until the restaurant because of county restrictions, so they have transformed the restaurant into a supply shop. Clothes, shoes, jackets, even food. Fire victims are invited to show up, shop and eat for free. People just grab items they need and we encourage them to take as much as they can and then offer them food, offer them to sit down and have a meal with us. Big families will come in and shell have them sit down and have a full meal, which is Pretty Amazing and it makes me very emotional about it because i just realized how much shes giving back to this community. Concern for fire danger certainly on the minds of a lot of people as we get closer to the weekend and expect hot temperatures, jeff . Yeah, and i know a lot of us are really kind of heat weary lately. We had a really, you know, hot end to summer and now fall is starting off with some hot weather. So hang in there. Well get you through the temperatures over the next couple days. I did want to start off, though, with a look at the winds. We always talk about a northerly wind is drier but i wanted to show you specifically why this north end, northeasterly wind is so dangerous for us. Even if a lot of the lower elevations arent seeing that gusty of winds and you can see we have High Pressure, which helps to bring the heat, the dry air circulation around that from the north and the east helps to drive down the winds. Were looking at sustained winds of 10 to 20, gusts of 20 to 50. Thats in the mountains 1,000 feet and above. Lets move this in even closer and what youre going to see is this the big difference with this northeasterly wind is the fact that it just continues to move over the land, which is very, very dry. When you compare it to the ocean breeze, we normally have, which has a lot of moisture and cooler air. With that air moving over land, it is drier. Then the other thing that happens as that air passes down the mountains thanks air descends down the mountains and compresses, the air gets heated and as that air gets heated, of course, it makes the trees and grass very dry. Its called adiabatic heating and humidity can get to 10 to 20 . It dries out the air and thats why its say dangerous. Were looking at more northeasterly winds late tomorrow night, saturday night into monday morning with the risk at 1,000 feet and above. Gusts of 20 to 50 as i mentioned and low humidity. What about the timing . 6 00 p. M. Saturday, youll see most of the bay area, not really that gusty. 6 00 p. M. Tomorrow night but there you go, we see wind pop up in the north bay down and you can see orange and red color mixed in with Higher Elevations where we could get to the 40 to 50 mile per hour gusts. So early sunday morning we have a chance of gusty winds and sunday night well see a pop of wind over parts of ma rrin, nap and sonoma. What about the smoke . There is a lot less smoke from the oregon fires so i think well have haze in the forecast. Thats the blue color on this smoke model forecast. But the worst smoke in the red and purple color is well away from us, well off towards the east. Yes, i think well get smoke but it doesnt look nearly as bad as over the past several weeks. Temperatures tomorrow morning start off in the 60s. Well be looking at 66 65 for t east bay. Daytime highs not extremely hot tomorrow. Well start to warm up. 93 in antioch, 84 san jose. 77 San Francisco. Things will really start to heat up once we hit sunday, monday, tuesday with 80s returning then well cool off in San Francisco by thursday and friday and for the inland valleys, were at 100 sunday, 101 monday, 100 on tuesday and then by the fallowing weekend, well see some upper 80s and low 90sno im tired of seeing theseveday. 2020 is about patience, many different forms. It will Impact Beverage containers like juice and sports drinks. Companies making them must use 15 recyclable plastic by 2022 and as you can see, it goes up to 50 by 2030.
