Hey jimmy im so happy youre here and i loved singing with you. Man, oh, man weve been doing this for a while now, me and you singing. We make a great team. Jimmy we really do bud is it true your dream was to be a backup singer yes, and that died. Yeah, that was my dream. Because i thought it would be so cool. I love so many types of artists and all different genres so i thought it would be cool to get to travel with different artists and go all over the world and sing different genres of music so that didnt work out. Jimmy no, did you ever sing backup when you were starting out . No i sang i mean, i sing with people all the time like growing up like different groups and stuff but as far like being paid professionally, no, i just did like demo work. So like, everybody was like, you should do a show and i was like, okay i didnt have a plan, so i thought, well, we should incorporate music, obviously jimmy but you won an emmy for it i did jimmy congratulations. Oh my gosh. You have to hear how i found out i won. So everythings weird now, like awards shows everythings different now so you its not like normal and usually youre there so i have had a really different kind of couple of months than what maybe i was expecting my future to look like a few months ago. And so im with my kids and im really present with them, im kind of single momming it now, so im like, you know, with legos, im coloring, i never have my phone on, never watch tv totally forgot that the emmys, just totally, i blanked because im so hyper focused and theres a lot going on in my life and so, its kind of been a rough month for me at that point, and my executive producer who just calls me and like, out of nowhere for me, im just sitting there playing legos and shes like, youre the best host. And i was like, i almost started crying i was like, thank you so much. I was like jimmy you were so sweet. Youre so nice. I was like, this is a kind thing to do, alex. To just call someone and tell them theyre good at something i needed that. And shes like, no, you won at the emmys, and i was like, what . And then my kids were like, you won they were sitting there and so excited. They had no idea why theyre excited but they were freaking out. Yeah, that was how i found out jimmy thats so cool what do you think now . Youre back in the studio, right . Yes jimmy which is, hows it like for you youre coming back september 21st does it feel odd to you going back in the studio is it safe obviously, its safe i yes, oh my gosh. I am the safest person around. The voice, like other jobs, this job, i had to take a test for all of it. Carson daly and i we take like eight tests a week. Were very, very safe and the all guidelines you get it. Its very different. But i dont know how you feel, but i, because my show actually ran throughout the summer because we were trying to finish out my first season and its been running this whole time, honestly and i adapt pretty easily in life so i didnt really, like, everybody was like, is it weird singing . Theres no people there. I was like, well no cause i sing in a studio all the time anyway and then theyre like, is it weird interviewing . And i was like, well, its my first time doing this anyways. So i didnt really know what the norm was. I was just kind of like, yeah, however were going to do it, lets do it. So it hasnt really bothered me either way and being back in the studio, its kind of cool because we have a virtual audience and theyre from all over the world and all there in the audience seats and we have guests there in person and also still coming virtually and we kind of sit the screen next to me its interesting and its definitely technical difficulty hell sometimes, but its worth it though. Its worth it. Jimmy yeah, so the audience is there so you can actually see people in the audience, wow. I play off of my audience and theyre from like, everywhere thats kind of the cool thing is our whole show is about connections. So the cool thing is we are really connecting all over the globe. Jimmy that is unbelievable are they doing the same thing on the voice i know youre coming back. Theyre doing it on the voice too its not it cant be as interactive on the voice because of all the elements in play its a little more interactive on the tv show, but on the voice, they do. They have a huge thing in the screen and we can interact with them its just a little, you know, its more about the artist, obviously, there and its more of like theyre just watching and we chime in every now and then with them but its interesting though, because even doing the voice, you hear everything. Its far more intimate its really different and its kind of cool all the coaches are kinda like, this is cool jimmy you can actually hear their voice. Well, i just mean, you can hear it. Like the crowd goes wild on certain parts and youre like, wait, we cant hear everything and then my mom will call and say, why did you say they did good they were so offkey. First, congrats on the reidout, by the way it launched in july, and its doing fantastic. Crushing in the ratings. I was looking at some information about you and youre the first woman of color to anchor a primetime news show on msnbc and youre also the only black woman currently anchoring a primetime news show on any of the Major Networks that is what an accomplishment what does that mean to you yeah, its daunting, right . When it kind of sunk in that i was going to be doing this, it felt really big. I grew up being a news junkie from sixth grade on. Everyone that was sort of telling me the world, and telling me about the news, the ted koppels of the world, the dan rathers, all the people that i admired, it was all white guys right . There were very few people like me that i could really see on tv so when i finally saw gwen iffil, it was like, ayour honor. You know, i just revered her because it was so exciting Carole Simpson and gwen ifill were the only black women that i can remember growing up. Connie chung, the only other woman of color so the very few women of color that ive seen in this space, ive always gravitated toward them i finally did get a chance to meet gwen ifill before she passed i was so excited i ran across the street in selma, alabama, and threw myself on top of her to give her a hug. She was very nice about it and let me take a selfie with her, which i treasure, so yeah its big because for some little kid, some little black girl, im like that to them in a way like theyre maybe seeing me and feeling like, okay, i can do this. This is something that i could do jimmy thats exactly right i can do that. I can be that, yeah. We should talk about some of the news thats happening. Obviously, today is the 19th anniversary of september 11th attacks were you working in news then . What do you remember about tha i was i mean, by then, we had three young kids but we were living in florida and i was now working for the nbc affiliate, wtvj in miami and i remember it was my day off, actually. 9 11, it was having an off day and my brother had come up from denver and was staying with us i remember him yelling, oh s word a plane just hit the World Trade Center and at first, i thought maybe it was just a wrongway plane because we had actually had a story like that not long before that in miami where a a guy just went off track and hit a building so im thinking, this is just a wrongway plane. By the time i walked down the stairs, the second plane hit and thats when we all realized this is not a wrongway plane. This is serious. Phone went off i had to go into work. It was shocking. I think i was so stunned for the first, probably, you know, six or seven hours, that it didnt hit me but when it did, i will admit, im not ashamed to admit i just cried and i dont cry at work. I try not to ever cry at work, no matter how tough the story. But i cried that day and then the day that, i dont know if you remember the boys choir of harlem did a thing where they went into Yankee Stadium and they sang we shall overcome to try to cheer new york up and i just, i lost it. Like, you know, yeah jimmy gosh and then to see the city come back and also, is pretty inspiring as well. And to see the First Responders and everyone helping doing whatever they can to help each other and i was like, ooh. New york is still the greatest city in the world it just is its the most resilient. People are like, new yorkers arent friendly. No, new yorkers will give you the shirt off their back they will do anything for you. New york comes together like no other city and rebounds like no other city, even with whats happening now. Jimmy i agree. I was just in new york recently new york is fighting its way back nothing can stop new york. Jimmy what else is happening in the news . I guess everyone is still talking about Bob Woodwards book and those tapes i just dont quite understand it what are your takes . So basically the president admitted that he downplayed the threats of coronavirus he said a lot of stuff but what was he thinking . Why would he do that and heres the thing, jimmy its not even as if bob woodward called the white house switchboard and said, let me talk to trump let me talk to him just for five minutes no, trump called him on one of the critical phone calls where he admitted that he was just downplaying it, even though he knew that this was a a deadly virus, that, oh, is airborne not only that, the day that he called bob woodward and gave him that on the record interview where hes like, im playing it down. I like to play it down he held a rally that day i mean, he literally, in the contemporaneous period and then kept holding rallies. And then stopped for a while and then went right back and did it in tulsa the day after juneteenth this man has known the whole time you know, i did a commentary on the show the other day where i said, look, at the end of the day, donald trump has lost his credibility with people like me people who cover him day in and day out and who have, you know, ive written a book about him. Ive interviewed all of his biographers nearly people who worked with him people who worked on the apprentice. Very difficult for me to take him at face value when he talks. But his supporters do. They believe everything he says its them hes primarily lying to its them who hes convinced not to wear masks. Its them who will take his advice and try bleach and thinking that that will help them its them, and then they put the rest of us in danger because they wont protect themselves jimmy im sure you saw the rally last night with everyone with unbelievable. And they played fortunate son as like, the intro song. Jimmy thats just so, its bizarre. I want to talk about a big project with peacock and msnbc tomorrow night at 10 00, but its a documentary called the sitin. Im hosting the tonight show so i know the story but a lot of people might not know this story. Do you want to explain what the sitin is about . Jimmy, i did not know it either i did not know that and we talked early on about the idea of me hosting a primetime news show as you know, late night is very similar in terms of the demographics of the people who dominated late night since the 1950s. You know, Johnny Carson, of course, being the guy who made late night into late night, created this credible platform that you are blessed to continue and that were thankful youre continuing but you also know that the platform has generally been about a breath, right . Its like, Walter Cronkite at 6 00 and then a deep breath for late night when you can just chill jimmy yeah right and thats what it was but johnny had an ethos. Johnny, hes a little, you know, he was a little bit of a a social gangster a little bit he was like, im a little gangster with this im going to do something big. He took this platform and he gave it to the first black man to ever host in late night and that black man is Harry Belafonte. February 1968, middle part of the civil rights movement. You know, violence and riots had been going on over Police Killings and abuse of black people it was a really difficult time in america you know, Johnny Carson hands this week over to Harry Belafonte and he says, do whatever you want with it. And harry says, you know what im going to do with it . Im going to go big. Yes, im going to have on aretha franklin, buffy saintemarie, great entertainers but im also going to have on my political friends political people, and he had on the two biggest, in terms of social gospel. Dr. Martin luther king jr. , and robert f. Kennedy and he does the last, the interviews especially with dr. Kennedy, i think it was his last recorded interview. Jimmy it is a great documentary.
