Contra costa county says its experiencing the worst of the pandemic. Health leaders were urging, almost begging people, to wear masks and social distance. This week the county reported a Record Number of cases, hospitalizations and deaths. Leaders say its not just elderly dying in Nursing Homes but younger adults. One doctor responded to the idea that herd immunity would be a good way and letting that large portion of our population to get infected could have dire consequences. We dont want to hear this. We are human beings and should protect ourselves. Herd immunity is not the solution. The county says the virus is disproportionately affecting the black and latino communities. Health leaders are asking people to stay home as much as possible. Lets take a look at the latest state numbers. In the last 24 hours california reported more than 8,000 new cases, 96 new deaths. Among those deaths the first young person to lose their life to the virus in california, the victim was a teenager with Underlying Health conditions who lived in the central valley. Only about 9 of the states cases are in children and very few of them are serious enough to land them in the hospital. But now lets take a deeper look at the virus and how its impacting different age groups. The Bay Area News Group broke down the percentage of cases in california and deaths for younger people and older people. 35 in all of the cases in california were in this 18 to 34 age group. That is the highest percentage. You see its important to note they constitute a lower portion of the deaths. Which age group is dying from the virus . 43 in the 80 plus or older group. Even though they only make up 3. 4 of the cases. The 70 to 74 group about 11 of covid deaths and cases. Health experts say even though young adults are more likely to survive the virus its not without its dangers. They could suffer from longterm side effects or spread it among older people. Covid clusters in the south bay. Public Health Department is investigating cases among costco workers. As we first reported earlier this week the outbreaks happened at several costco locations. Sunnyvale has the most cases, 13. Tonight new information is coming up at other stores as well. Robert handa joins us from san jose to show us why the numbers indicate an unsettling trend. Reporter in talking to people about the help departments investigation into south bay costcos including this one in san jose, some were reassured, others a little shaken up. Its still busy inside the Costco Stores today that they revealed had clusters of cases but some workers told us they are upset Health Officials told us their preliminary investigation indicates most workers who tested positive got infected outside the work place. One worker said it felt like employees were being blamed for the outbreak and that more precautions needed to be taken. Hopefully they do the test and are take more initiative sanitizing the store. Reporter today theal departn it said most cases it was talking about the eight investigated at the san jose not including the sunnyvale costco which had 13 confirmed cases. The cases nudged sunnyvale into the highest category of hot spots with 305 cases for 100,000 people. Though still lower than the other cluster cities including gilroy at 974 and san jose at 633. Reporter the public Health Department has emphasized the situation at these south bay costcos is actually typical these days for Big Box Stores which can be reassuring or troubling depending what else the investigation turns up. Santa clara county issued a new order requiring Health Care Providers to test people with symptoms in contact with public. Those people are still having a hard time getting tested and showed this grf to illustrate how the county is still testing more than other providers. The order you are experienci symptoms you can get tested. If youre not experiencing symptoms but have been exposed to someone who has covid19 you can be tested. The county says its important to increase testing numbers to make room for those who dont have insurance. Sonoma county is working to get more people tested for covid antibodies. They are offering Antibody Testing for people who work in schools including teachers, administrators, oneonone aides and custodians. The county was offering the test to first responders, health care workers, Grocery Store employees and Community Members who tested positive at least three weeks ago. No deal means no more dollars. Some 25 million americans will be losing 600 a week in extra unemployment benefits. Jackie ward explains thats money many have been relying on during the shutdown. A single mom with three kids and now you have to home school them, that 600 could mean either milk, food, or pg e. Vallejo police launched a hate Crime Investigation into vandalism at an east bay city councilmans office. Graffiti was found at vallejo councilman and mayoral candidate browns office. Has the story of a medical student whose journey led her back to where it all started, the farm field and buckets of blueberries. Reporter you can think of the stanford campus as an educational field of dreams. Students come hoping to leave with good jobs. One of those dreamers graduated this year with a masters degree in epidemiology ready to Start Medical School in the fall. But when she lost her two campus jobs due to the pandemic, she headed home to Eastern Washington hoping to find a job there. I still had tuition bills. I still had phone bills and i had to help out around the house. Reporter there were no jobs for her in washington either. Just her parents working the same fields she toiled in before leaving for stanford. And so i thought, well, in the worst Case Scenario i could go with my fields. Reporter she had to set her degree aside to take a bucket to pick blueberries alongside her family. You strap on the one gallon bucket on to this almost backlike strap. On a good day she can fill four an hour. When i left college i thought ill never have to come back here again, ill have an education and can get a good job. This election cycle will most likely be the first and only cycle we will have to carry the vote to victory based on absentee or vote by mail ballot. We should register to vote and ensure that we request an absentee ballot. We must do this all across the country. We may not have a lot of conversation about who we will vote at the federal level we do have local and state initiatives that will dismantle all of those fortunes, that continues to push them out of the bay area.
