Happy friday we are going to see more sunshine as we go into the afternoon but were starting out with some drizzle here and some cooler temperatures and this is part of the reason why, a thicker layer of fog along the coast and here in the city thats going to transport some of the cooler air inland. Were coming down a few degrees from yesterday with the south bay reaching 78 degrees. 78 in palo alto. 68 in oakland. For napa look for a high of 81 degrees. When you come across the cone zone, be careful. Im concerned about fremont, southbound 880. A Construction Zone around thornton and that is where a crash is reported. I think there may be a caltrans vehicle involved. We have a few scattered along the nimitz. More on that coming up. On the watch list the recent surge in coronavirus cases is putting a spotlight on the city of san jose. But Santa Clara County Health Leaders say the attention is misguided. Today in the bays kris sanchez joins us now. Dr. Birx will be talking about this this morning on the today show. Reporter yes. Shes talking on the east coast so well have access to some of that sound later on this morning. She could offer some clarification as to why san jose is now at the top of the watch list even though local leaders say they didnt have any idea about that. The city is one of 12 that the White House Coronavirus task force is now tracking following an uptick in cases. Lumping the bay areas most p populous city with phoenix and miami. In an audio clip obtained by the journalist Nonprofit Group center for Public Integrity dr. Birx said local officials should be ready to react aggressively to stop the spread of covid19. Here is what dr. Birx had to say this morning earlier on the today show. Texas, california, arizona and florida. Those major metros and throughout their counties. I just want to make it clear to the American Public what we have right now are essentially three new york major states. And so were really having to respond as an american people. Reporter in a statement from the county of santa clara which is leading the response, they say we are concerned about increases in cases nationally and believe that this highlights the need for a coordinated National Approach to address the pandemic, something the president has failed to put into effect. Despite this concern, again, local leaders say they werent part of the conversation that happened just yesterday, but dr. Among those recommendations announced yesterday inperson instruction should include social distancing, wearing masks, and keeping the same groups of students and teachers together. Also using other areas of the campus for classrooms like gyms or outdoor spaces. The guidelines suggest transmission for children is low, but many administrators in the bay area say it is simply not enough. Im not willing to take that responsibility. Im not going to be cavalier about it not only for the protection of our students but protection of our staff. State and local districts are making the final decision on inperson learning. New details this morning, Sonoma County leaders considering hefty fines and even jail time for covid19 rule breakers. The press democrat reporting supervisors yesterday showed strong support for fines up to 1,000 and six months of jail time. The final vote expected august 6th. The bay area added more than 1,000 new cases yesterday. Heres a look county by county. At least 729 people b we learned a sheriffs deputy also died after a battle with covid19. Deputy sheriff oscar rocha passed away last night. The Sheriffs Department saying on twitter in part he put up a courageous fight to the end and will never be forgotten. You hear cancer, especially in a 3yearold, were trying to keep the positive in personality and stuff like that. Lets keep the positive vibes going. This is hurricane douglas, and this will continue to move off to the west over to hawaii. A big concern for our friends and family there even though this will continue to weaken, its going to cause high waves an of rain in south texas today, just south of corpus christi. Well see this moving in as the Tropical Storm the next few days. Further out in the atlantic we have Tropical Storm gonzalo that is expected to strengthen as it moves to the caribbean islands and just to the south, the Dominican Republic and haiti going into the weekend. Were looking at some mid80s for today in some of our warmest spots. Well be in the 90s for the weeke weekend. Next week its looking warm. Were not going to see a major cooldown but in San Francisco were not going to see a change here going into the week. Mike, how is it looking right now for the commute . Overall the speeds are great. Out of the altamont very slow. Getting into fremont looking southbound on the maps we see that the south bay and the peninsula are great. Again, that crash we led off with still there in the Construction Zone may involve a caltrans truck. No injuries. Thats 84 as it jogs over from the dumbarton bridge and to the city street there.
