Tonight, joins jimmy and his guests Charlize Theron Governor Andrew Cuomo musical guest Little Big Town and featuring the legendary roots crew and now, heres your host, Jimmy Fallon Jimmy hi, everyone and welcome to the tonight show. As you can see, we are back in the studio at 30 Rockefeller Plaza here in new york city. And as a new yorker, i want to say thank you to everyone who helped get us back to where we are now. Wearing masks, social distancing, washing hands, quarantining, it all helps and to all the states going through the tough parts right now, our friends in florida, arizona, texas, california, all over the south, i know how hard it is. And im not going to lie to you, its rough. But i guess im here to show you that there is a light at the end of the tunnel if we all do our part to keep each other safe i dont know if anyone else feels this way but normalcy, any type of normalcy feels great. So hopefully we can put a smile on your face for a hour every night and let you sit back and relax while we try to bring you just a little bit of normal. These are the hardest times to do comedy, but theyre also the times when we need it the most maybe thats why comedy was invented hmm. Chew on that [ laughter ] as youre going drifting off to sleep let that marinate for a bit before you flip it on the grill. [ laughter ] either way, were we here at the tonight show always want to bring you the best show possible and that means having the safest show possible everyone here in the studio has tested negative for covid. And all of our crew are Wearing Masks and face shields and were all six feet apart take a look. We are taking this very seriously. And i want to thank nbc for really doing a great job of making sure everyone here feels safe just to walk through my day, when i got in this morning, i had a temperature check. I did the nose swab test, the one that goes all the way up into your brain. Yeah, i didnt know that at the same time you can get a covid test and a colonoscopy, but, hey, were learning. Right . Anyway, once i was cleared, i could go to my office and get ready for the show and every part of the office has a little slip of paper thank you. Saying that its been disinfected. Yeah this was truly done the safest way possible thank you. And we would only do it that way if that was the case, the safest way were thankful to have the roots with us tonight. Im very, very happy to see you guys i missed you sent a bunch of texts. [ laughter ] didnt hear back [ laughter ] the shows going to be a little bit different than what youre used to. There is no audience the guests will be streaming from home. But i think in some ways were all kind of getting used to different. But what we want you to know is that were here for you. And were slowly and safely getting back to work and back to whatever normal is. So welcome again to the tonight show and thanks for watching we have a great one for you tonight. Weorguinally happened this weekend for the first time, President Trump wore a a mask in public if you didnt see it, here it is yeah, that was a really smart move if today were march 13th. People think trump was wearing a mask but surprise, it was a cake [ laughter ] years from now, that mask will be in the smithsonian and none of us will be able to see it because we will still be in lockdown you know, were just a few days away from trump claiming that he was the first person to wear a mask you know that, right theres actually a photo of trump wearing the mask later in the day. Take a look at this. Can we zoom in nailed it [ light laughter ] in trumps defense, youd lower your mask, too, if all you could smell were your own diet coke burps [ crew ohs ] a few hours later, he was wearing it as a banana h but trump did eventually take his mask completely off. Can we see what the inside of the mask looked like yeah, just dont put it in the wash, honey. Dont put it in the wash with everything else. Trump wore a mask publically for the first time it seems like a lot of guys are having a hard time Wearing Masks because they feel like it makes them look weak well, i saw a commercial that will help those guys out check it out jimmy are you a big strong man worried wearing a facemask will make you look like a little girl in pigtails . Well, just when it seemed like trump started taking the pandemic more seriously, the white house has decided to try to take down one of their top experts. The white house is attempting to discredit Infectious Disease expert dr. Anthony fauci amid his dire warnings about the trump administrations Coronavirus Response jimmy thats right and even though cases are surging across the country, trump is actively trying to discredit dr. Fauci, his top coronavirus expert which brings us a segment called couldnt you just . And now, couldnt you just . Jimmy hey, President Trump, i hear youre trying to undermine dr. Fauci, your own expert about coronavirus but heres a question. Couldnt you just stop doing that dr. Fauci is the one guy who has been preparing his whole life for this situation. Hes like the ghostbusters of coronavirus. Hes not great at everything but if theres a ghost, who you going to call . And even now, President Trump, with the virus surging, you continue to be all youre not my real dad and listen to everybody but fauci. Couldnt you just not . Its like the house is on fire, the firemans right there and instead, you call your friend dirk over. Like what do i do . Dirk doesnt know anything he thinks pandemic is a cool band name. And while youre at it, President Trump, couldnt you just give america some faith in our scientists instead of calling your own expert a liar its like the worst job recommendation at ever terry is a great plumber. Hes been doing it his whole life also, he knows nothing about toilets or sinks or water. Keep away from pipes. I mean, couldnt you just not throw your own guy under the bus especially when its this guy . I mean, how can you hate that face he looks like Stuart Little grew up and got his medical degree [ light laughter ] but look, even if President Trump is playing kerplunk with the nations health. Then america, couldnt you just do whats right anyway fauci might not be here for much longer but couldnt you just embrace the fauch inside of you wear a mask. Wash your hands. Pronounce soda soder. And most of all, dont go to dirks house to listen to his bands new demo. I mean, couldnt you just . This has been couldnt you just . Jimmy well, if trump is looking to discredit one of his top medical experts, he must be getting his coronavirus information from a source thats even more esteemed. Instead of dr. Fauci, the president today turning to Game Show Host and conspiracy theorist Chuck Woolery [ laughter ] jimmy thats interesting but before i make any decisions i want to hear what Wink Martindale has to say [ light laughter ] Chuck Woolery. For those that dont know him, hes a crazy extv host with a a bunch of exwives who loves conspiracy theories. And now hes retweeting Chuck Woolery. [ laughter ] [ laughter ] its not good. Its not good. Were getting medical advice from the former host of the apprentice whose getting it from the former host of love connection. Well, just when we thought trumps response to the virus couldnt get any worse, this weekend, he took his education secretary betsy devos out of packing peanuts to defend the administrations push to reopen schools in the fall. Heres what she had to say there is no nothing in the data that would suggest that kids being back in school is is dangerous to them jimmy yeah she was like, kids need to go back to school in fact, people even tell me that i should go back to school. Unfortunately the data betsy is talking about was provided by Chuck Woolery. [ laughter ] and finally, as the pandemic rages on, trump spent friday dealing with a more worthy cause. President trump on friday night commuted the sentence of his longtime friend and political adviser roger stone. Stone had been convicted of crimes including lying to congress in part to protect the president. Jimmy hey, can we see roger stone . Its a shame cause now he cant use his escape plan of throwing a purple smoke bomb while a henchman airlifts him out of the prison yard [ laughter ] thats the monologue, everybody. You guys, as i mentioned, im so glad to be back here in the studio its 30 rock its a city that we love and i got to say, its almost like its beginning to loo a bit like norma in the studio the roots are looking gran weve got the greatest band the audience is ready for the show no, guys, i already said that there is no audience so its beginning to loo a bi sort of almost like normal im in my suit and tie no, im wearing a sweater. Charlize, who are your friends who did you bring with you um, this is leo, and this is cleo jimmy stop and they have literally become part theyre like now i just have theyre just extra body parts. [ laughter ] they just never leave my lap yeah jimmy leo and cleo they were Christmas Gifts to my two girls, cause they so desperately wanted their own dogs and now, i have four dogs. They basically just jimmy how did they talk you into this . I mean, i grew up with animals, and i think there is you learn empathy. I think its one of the best ways to learn empathy, is to have animals and to take care of them and care for them. So i was okay with it. Oh, my god what just happened jimmy is it an earthquake . I dont know. Jimmy i just shot a spitball through the camera. [laughter] nailed it. [ laughter ] i dont know if youve seen me in a while i do magic now i do zoom magic. Thats impressive i have a ghost now you guys are just going to have to with that. It going to drive me crazy, but you guys are going to have to deal with that well fix it jimmy its part of my act. Its so cute yeah. How old are yours . Were close, right jimmy yeah, were close. I have seven and five. Yeah. Were super close. Oh, my god we know exactly i mean, you know what its like. Jimmy i was going to ask you youre raising two young black girls. Are you having conversations about black lives matter, the protests yeah. I mean, i think its important that we i mean, for myself, i just the day i became a a parent, i just vowed i would always tell them the truth in a way that they could handle and i feel like this is such an important moment for them. For all of us. And you know, they have an awareness. Theyre not i think we forget how aware sometimes our kids are and i wanted them to know what this was all about, what happened to george floyd and to so many other black bodies that have died from this violence unjust all of this is. And i know that theres a part in telling them some of that ugliness about the world that would you know, make them grow up a little bit faster than maybe they should have or would have normally during this period but i think this is too important of a moment to not be completely transparent um, and they handled it really well, you know i think it was heartbreaking at first. Jimmy yeah they couldnt understand that people would let Something Like that happen jimmy yeah and, uh, im getting emotional just thinking about it, because that is really ultimately what it is. Like, how do we allow anything like this to happen on our watch . And then, they really wanted to be proactive they really wanted to know, what can we do and so, they became very active in protesting and wanting to make signs and wanting to actually go and protest. And so, the other side of this is that i have seen them come around and become theyve really grown from this theyve become real, little warriors in their own right. I can take no credit for it. Jimmy but youve always since ive known you, always been involved in different giving back and charities, ctaop, which is your charity yeah. Jimmy can you talk about that and what you guys are up to yeah. I mean, listen, i always think of it as we are really fortunate to work with great organizations who are doing all the work on the ground within their communities. Ctaop really supports young people in africa, and we invest in their lives, for them to have healthy lives and our predominant focus is on hiv and aids prevention since its still the hardest hit country in the world when it comes to that virus but, you know, its a holistic we look at our program as being holistic and we invest in the whole young person and so that means, you know, during this period we have really checked in with a lot of our organizations, because covid is devastating, when you look at a country i mean, its devastating everywhere. But in a country like south africa where you have big families living together under one roof um, and we dont have i think a statistic came out that theres one icu bed for every million. Not one, 11 for every 1 Million People so we dont have the infrastructure and emergency that is necessary in a pandemic like this. So, weve been trying to help on other capacities. You know, not just when you find yourself in times like this, you have to kind of move and shift the focus a a little bit and, um, so were trying to just help as much as we can. But yeah i mean, we started in 2007 and, um, its something you know as a South African im very proud of. Ive always wanted to help in some way, because south africa is an incredible country it really is and the people are just resilient. And theyre warriors, and im proud to be from there jimmy um, i want to talk about your movie the old guard on netflix right now its the most watched film right now on netflix. Um, some timely themes based on a graphic novel. Would you like to set it up . Yeah. So when we made this movie, the graphic novel was sent to me its a great graphic novel written by greg rucka, and he wrote it right after his father passed away. And when you read the graphic novel it becomes very clear that hes very good at understanding big worlds, especially scifi worlds but he has so much heart in wanting to try and understand what makes life matter and why death is important and i think he really struggled with that personally so the story feels very, very personal and the emotional story inside this big scifi world of these immortal warriors, who are out there trying to do good but, you know, some of them are questioning are they actually changing the world is what theyre doing really changing anything. My character especially is kind of lost not only her faith in herself but faith in humanity, and feels like none of this really matters anymore and a new one a new immortal is found in the story, played by kiki layne. And she kind of joins the group, and she brings i think she brings knowledge of appreciation to my character, andy and kind of understanding why it does all matter it just takes one person, you change one persons life and what that can really lead up to is pretty amazing. Jimmy well, im very excited to do this i havent done this in probably almost four months but i would like to show a clip of the film. Heres Governor Andrew Cuomo welcome, governor. Thank you so much for being here this is our first show back in the studio yeah, no, its a pleasure thank you for having me. And welcome back new york is really open now that youre doing your show again. Jimmy how are you . Hows the family how are the girls . I tell you, everything is good you know, we went through hell and back as you know in new york but we went from having, jimmy, the worst infection rate in the country. We now have the best infection rate so we really turned the corner new yorkers stepped up they really did the right thing. They did the socially distancing, they stayed at home and we tamed the beast here in new york so we just have to cross our fingers and hope that it stays there. Because you see, the infection is now all across the country and its going crazy and were just worried that the infections going to come from the other states now back to new york, which would be a real tragedy. Jimmy why do you think the the virus is going up in some states and going down in new york you know, look, we had two different approaches from the beginning. Right. You had the president of the United States basically denying that the virus existed i believe he played politics with it. You had these other states rushed to reopen like there was no problem, but there was a problem, there was a virus and you cant deal with the virus politically. You had to be smart. You had to get it under control. You had to do what we did. You had to close down. People had to take precautions wearing the mask, right . We were the first state to say you had to wear a mask you had to get the virus down. And we did that. And it wasnt easy but look, long term, it turned out better weve been open now for about two months as a state. And we have the infection rate way down low and it was never going to work what the president said. It was never going to work to deny it, hope that it was magically going to disappear or have all these states reopening without without following any science whatsoever jimmy i saw your briefing this morning but before that, i missed your briefings. Have you gotten what have you done with your free time that youre not briefing i slept ive been sleeping a lot [ laughter ] l i still do the briefings when i have something to say. Something thats new and we do it a couple of times a week. But look, that was a horrendous period and i wanted to do it everyday just because i wanted to be there with people everyday, right. Jimmy yeah this was emotional more than anything else. It was frightening, it was isolating, people didnt know what was going on. So i just wanted to say to the people of the state, look, im going to be there every morning. You want to know where we are and you want to know the update, im going to be there. And if you dont want to know, thats fine too. But if you have any questions, im going to be there. I know youre going through heck everyday, im going to do it with you. Because youre right we did something thats going to go down in the history books. And it was the people of new york jimmy, i had nothing to do with it except explain the situation to the people of the state and ask them to do the right thing and step up. And they did they did 19 Million People, you know. These are new yorkers. Theyre not they can be a a difficult bunch, right jimmy yeah but they really they listened to their better angels they really did the right thing. And im so proud to be a a new yorker, to tell you the truth. Jimmy yeah, me, too. I also youve been getting a lot of praise that youre the first governor to really enact police reform. What can you say about that . Well, you heard the outrage after the george floyd murder. And look, in many ways, im surprised it took so long, you know you have 30 cases that went before george floyd, right you can go back to rodney king in los angeles, was 30 years ago. We had amadou diallo, abner louima in new york 20 years ago and theyre all basically the same eric garner, in new york city, six years ago, died of a a chokehold on Staten Island so i think people at one point just said enough is enough they want a different type of policing, they wan good thing, jimmy. I think, look, if you dont have trust and respect between the police and the community, you have nothing the relationship has to work and if its not working for one party, the relationship isnt working. And what the community is saying is, its not working for us so great, lets reset the relationship and what do you want from the Police Department and what do you not want what do you want fixed and lets have that conversation as a nation were starting it in this state. And i said every Police Department in every city has to sit down at the table with the other side in a collaborative and redesign a Police Department that works for everyone and change the procedures you need to change. Because the police have to do their job also and they need trust and respect to do their job.
