As we look at the entire bay, the Speed Sensors are great except for the altamont where its worse than normal especially on a friday. You have two lanes of the westbound commute direction. Only two lanes open. Westbound your right lanes are open. The lanes off to the left, the three lanes are still blocked by the fire activity. A smaller fire on the eastbound side. Were still concerned. Lets take you to the breaking news, a brush fire fueled by wind. Today in the bays Sharon Katsuda is getting a Vantage Point. What can you see from the area where you are . Reporter we can definitely feel everything that mike was just talking about. We can smell the smoke in the air. This is highway 580 westbound, pretty much stopandgo traffic. It was looking better about 15 minutes ago, so definitely reopening one of the lanes at least helped out. You can still see it is really backed up here. An accident caused a fire and it jumped northbound to the other side of the highway. It started eastbound side and then jumped to the north, to the westbound and beyond. So that caused both directions to be shut down and you can see this is the aftermath. I sat in the traffic but they opened the lanes. Its hard to see how far out this fire got. You can probably tell its pretty windy out here. We have another crew looking for other hot spots. We can smell the smoke. Meteorologist kari hall tracking what we can expect. Kari . Good morning. The Altamont Pass is a windy spot and i was just looking at some of the wind sensors we have there. It showed a recent gust of 33 miles an hour. Thats the reason why its a perfect spot to have the Wind Turbines there. It has to funnel through the lower part of the valley and moving into the central valley. We also look at humidity in the area. 25 to 35 humidity and that also allows for that fire to grow quickly so thats something well be monitoring. Hot temperatures this weekend. A deadly shootout at the end of a long standoff in knightsen. A gunman was holding a woman hostage. A s. W. A. T. Team was called in before 1 00 in the afternoon and then at 9 00 in the evening a gunman emerged from the house firing his shotgun at s. W. A. T. Team members. Three of them were hit. Deputies shot and killed the man at the scene. Our reporter pete suratos is trying to get the latest on their injuries and will join us with a live report in about 30 minutes. Continuing our coronavirus coverage, the bay area added more than 700 new cases yesterday surpassing 31,000 thus far. Two weeks ago state projections showed a rapid rise in six bay area counties. The latest projections list only Solano County with spiking numbers along with Contra Costa County. Marin is showing a decrease. It looks like students at another large district will start their school year at home. To jackie ward. Students may not return to campus for quite some time. The mayor was tested after learning that someone who was infected attended one of her events. She is selfisolating as a precaution. We have a storm system passing to the north, were still dealing with the Desert Southwest heat moving into the bay area but then as we go into early next week it backs off just a little bit and allows for some of that cooler air to move in. Staying on that breaking news, the fire at the Altamont Pass lighting up the night sky and causing traffic troubles. Today in the bays Sharon Katsuda was there. Sharon, you mentioned earlier you were stuck in some of that traffic. Reporter thats right. That was about 3 45 this morning, and it was very backed up. But then those eastbound lanes reopened so traffic was flowing smoothly. Take a look, still looking at the westbound lanes here and with daylight you can actually see how far reaching this fire was. It started in the eastbound lanes when there was an accident just before midnight and then it jumped the interstate 580 northbound and so now you see backups westbound. You can see the brake lights and the fire and the charred hillside. This started about midnight. They were able to contain this fire to about 100 acres. That is the good news. As they open up the lanes again 15, 20 minutes ago, they opened all lanes. For the fattistill a little bitt we should see progress as we go on through the morning commute. Pete suratos is live in knightsen just outside brentwood. We want to know how the deputies are doing. Reporter good morning to you, kris. We know two of the deputies were recovering at a hospital at last check. Hopefully we get an update at some point today, but we know this began as a Domestic Violence incident which led to an hours long standoff between Contra Costa County sheriffs deputies and the suspect. Here is what we know according to the latest information from the sheriffs deputies. Just before 10 00 a. M. They were called out to the 1700 block of green acres lane in knightsen, just outside of brentwood. A female victim says the suspect broke her ribs and even poured gasoline on her trying to set her on fire. She was able to get away from the scene by the time deputies arrived. It didnt end there. The s. W. A. T. Team was called out around 1 00 p. M. To try to get the suspect to surrender. They say at 9 00 p. M. The suspect came out of the home firing a shotgun at three deputies. Deputies returned fire at the suspect who was pronounced dead on the scene. As i mentioned two deputies were sent to a hospital for their injuries. We expect to get more details later today. Reporting live, pete suratos for today in the bay. A disturbing discovery in the south bay. Human remains found on farmland in south san jose. Deputies say human bones were found near a possible homeless encampment off richmond avenue. Investigators have not been able to determine the persons gender but crime scene investigators spent a couple hours collecting evidence there yesterday. Overnight california marked a new milestone in this pandemic. Confirmed cases have surpassed 300,000. The second highest in the nation only behind new york. As weve been reporting the state is also setting daily records and confirmed cases and deaths. And now theres a shortage of testing kits and labs just cant keep up with the processing. Places like los angeles are back to only testing people with symptoms and several testing sites in sacramento and San Bernardino counselee closed earlier this week because they ran out of testing kits. Bad news for local businesses in sonoma counselee. That county is expected to be added to the states watch list today. According to the press democ t democrat Indoor Dining at restaurants, bars, tasting rooms will all shut down for at least three weeks, and that means only two bay area counties in green are in the clear. The decision is because of Sonoma Countys rising covid19 cases and hospitalizations. County supervisors plan to talk about ways to crack down on people who are not following the rules. The Sacramento Bee reports one idea is diploma privilege where they would be licensed automatically and tested at a later date. But for now the exam is just delayed to early september. Maybe just a few more months to study, i guess. In advance of a big civil rights protest planned for martinez this weekend some businesses are boarding up their store fronts. Theyre afraid anarchists and other Fringe Groups may cause trouble. The actual protest was organized by two groups inspired by the black lives Matter Movement and they expect thousands to march with them. Police say White Supremacy groups indicate theyll show up as well. Last weekend a black lives matter street mural was defaced sparking several heated confrontations. The two vandals have been charged with misdemeanor hate crimes. On the peninsula new details on a growing movement to remove a black lives matter mural in palo alto. This is a little bit different. The National Police association is demanding the city remove that art project. The mural features a black Liberation Army member who escaped prison after being convicted of killing a new Jersey Police officer. It currently is along hamilton avenue across from city hall. This week the citys mayor said he and other city officials have no plans to paint over that image. Berkeley leaders considering the unusual idea of taking traffic stops out of the hands of police officers. Next tuesday councilmembers will consider this as one way to reduce Police Response to nonviolent crimes. This, of course, tied to reform and defunding, believed to be the first idea of its kind anywhere. Unarmed public works agents would enforce traffic instead. Renters trying to make it in the bay might have some luck at finding some lower priced apartments in San Francisco. According to the rental website rent in San Francisco hit its largest decline. A man whose long battle with coronavirus nearly ended in death is leaving the hospital today. That is good to hear. He spent more than 100 days. For 86 of those days he was on a ventilator. His son says his father was a triathlete for the last 20 years but suffered several organ failures, collapsed lung, and even paralyzed. Hes now able to move his arms and legs again and is able to breathe on his own. Boy, he looks so different there after having coronavirus versus the pictures you see with his family. And to know he was such an athlete and it hit him that hard is scary. People need to see those images. We go out and about and everything looks fine. We cant see whats happening inside the hospitals. Family members called for further investigation, but authorities determined the person in this case did buy the rope himself the month before and had previously tried to commit suicide. The former usc gynecologist accused is facing new charges. Prosecutors filed six new felony counts against george tindal. He pleaded not guilty to the original charges last year.
