Coming up next as we continue the third hour of today in the bay. Thanks so much for joining us on this tuesday morning. Im kris sanchez in for laura garcia. And im marcus washington. Mike is taking a look at the commute. You can do it all but well leave the forecast up to meteorologist kari hall who has been tracking that for us. Hes multitalented. Kari, how is it looking . It looks pretty good today. It will be a touch warmer in a few spots, but really nothing huge here as we look at our live view in walnut creek this morning. Whats been a bigger issue has been the drifts of smoke and the fires weve seen recently. It is making for a colorful sunrise across parts of the bay area as our temperatures go from the mid50s this morning, well be in the upper 70s by early in the afternoon. So well talk more about the air quality and our temperatures around the bay area coming up. Mike, any issues popping up for the roads . First of all, the issue is i would be able to do the weather, kari, but not accurately. Thats the caveat. Were looking at fremont. We still have the crash blocking a number of lanes. Northbound 680. A great drive and your commute direction unexpectedly slow northbound 680 from mission south, heading to the auto mall parkway. Your right lanes are blocked by crash activity and debris so thats unexpectedly slow heading into sunol out of fremont. Monitoring the traffic, were okay to the bay bridge. Back to you. All right, thank you, mike. This morning the question a lot of us are talking about over our cereal bowls and at the dinner table, when are students going back to school and what is that going to look like . We have Team Coverage morning. Today in the bays roz with new details about bay area schools. First to alice barr in washington where President Trump is holding an event just days after he said schools must open in the fall. Good morning, alice. Reporter good morning, laura. Thats right. And this is a serious challenge for School Districts all over the country, when and how to reopen. President trump has made it clear he thinks they do need to be back open this fall and there is good reason for that. In one instance you have to look at the fact its difficult for parents to go back to work without their kids being able to be in school and then the American Academy of pediatrics has come out and recommended that schools reopen with the goal of having students physically present because they are concerned students could fall further behind in their education and even things as simple as being abl many kids rely on school for. So this is the idea were striving for but each district is in the patchwork mode of trying to figure out the safest way to do it for themselves. And its going to depend on what the situation is with the virus wherever the School District is. Health officials are saying that districts that are seeing a surge of cases around where they are are going to have to take extra steps to try and do this safely. Dr. Anthony fauci. Modifying the schedules, separation of desks, Wearing Masks under certain circumstances. Everybody knows we cant get back to normal without going back to school. Reporter and that was the Top Republican in the senate, mitch mcconnell, who is now saying its important to get kids back to school. We know this is going to cost money to try to do classrooms, to have more buses so kids could be spaced out on bus routes, to hand out masks. He is saying he would support including funding for schools specifically to get kids back in the classroom in the next Coronavirus Relief bill that lawmakers are expected to vote on later this month. Laura, back to you. Thank you very much, alice. A lot of local School Districts are looking to see how theyll make the dollar stretch. We do have new numbers from nbc news this morning showing the majority of americans do not like the way the president is handling the pandemic. 55 disapprove of the job the president is doing. 43 approve. But, listen to this. 7 in 10 americans say they trust the governor over the president in deciding when businesses should reopen in their area. Also new for you this morning reality appears to be setting in for some bay area School Districts that wont be ready for students to return to matter of weeks. Today in the bays roz plater is live for us in roz, this is leaving a lot of parents really concerned. Reporter they are indeed because a lot of those plans call for kids to be learning from home, and the parents are saying, listen, that puts us in a bind. We have to work and cant afford to keep our kids at home. The latest plans are for students in east contra costa county. The Brentwood Union elementary School District, were told, would be 100 Distance Learning or online. The Liberty Union high School District would be an every other day format with 100 Distance Learning as an option. And in the oakley union School District 100 Distance Learning with the option to move to a hybrid schedule when it was deemed safe. Last week the palo alto board of education signed off on a plan to bring Elementary Students back to school for facetoface learning with middle and High School Students primarily learning from home. That debate is playing out on social media. Here isntwood dad wondering how theyll live on one paycheck saying either my wife or i will have to leave our career to teach our fifth grader. Another dad defending the School District said theyre doing the best they can do to take care of bay ers and sts likely just a f area tell their plans for going back to school. Im roz plater for today in the bay. We are all ears. Thank you very much, roz. San mateo county supervisors are trying to figure out a way to nudge people who still refuse to wear their mask when they are out in public. They want the state to start helping with the crackdown. They will meet today to debate a new resolution. And according to the chronicle one supervisor sent a letter to the Governors Office urging the state to get serious about enforcing the mask order with escalating fines for those caught in public without one. It is not clear how todays proposed resolution might echo that recent letter. Happening today a free testing site opens in one of San Franciscos most economically challenged neighborhoods. Developing right now we are learning details about a senseless and really sad killing that happened over the weekend. It was the killing of an east bay doctor. A family spokesperson tells us that 46yearold ari ger shman was offroading with his son northeast of sacramento. The family says a man on an allterrain vehicle, an atv, drove up behind them and for no apparent reason opened fire. The doctor was shot in the chest. His son ran into the woods and hid. It took 24 rescuers to find him. He is safe, though. The suspect is now in custody. That person is also a suspect in at least one other shooting that happened earlier that day. A go fund me page has already raised more than 100,000. And now we want to take a look outside. Kari, we were wondering whether or not the smoke is going to continue to clear or maybe well see more of it. We have a light wind but a slight shift in the wind direction makes a huge difference so were starting out with cool temperatures. Santa rosa is at 48 degrees. We have some mid50s for oakland, palo alto and in san jose. Well be in the upper 50s to start and low 80s as we go into this afternoon. Well talk more about the air quality. Mike, any issues for drivers . That one we continue to follow. Well look at the maps. I circled san jose where we have your typical slowing breaking up about now. North 101 no longer a problem. 680 north is a problem still coming through fremont. North of 680 and auto mall parkway is a problem. Backed up to mission boulevard. Once you pass that youre okay. Right now at 6 14 as the sun rises over the hills in the south bay right now, air quality is pretty good, and well at times still have some drifts of smoke coming in as our temperatures heat up. Were looking at some low 80s by 2 00, which is about where we are for our normal High Temperature this time of year. A slight warmup in the forecast coming up. And we have an upgrade, kari, as chp now issues the sig alert. The Traffic Alert means it will take at least half an hour. A couple lanes get by but theres the slowing. Well talk about it more coming up. Good morning. A very happy tuesday to you. United Airlines Just sent a warning to tens of thousands of employees saying they could be laid off this fall. San mateo county, one of the largest employers is United Airlines. A closer look at tiktok. America could ban the app. India already has. It is used to make short videos. Its a Chinese Company and some worry its collecting data about americans for the chinese government. Tiktok insists its independent with an american ceo. Facebook and twitter and google and even tiktok are saying they are going to adjust their user policies so theyre not assisting police in hong kong. Hong kong used to be considered a separate part. You could use google in hong kong but not mainland china. That has changed as china has put its rules on top of hong kongs government. Facebook, our own bob redell is looking into how the facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is meeting with ad execs over the boycott. I spoke about Mark Zuckerberg. Well run the interview this weekend. They say facebook might be better served if zuckerberg were not the ceo. Thats not going to happen considering zuckerberg has the majority of Facebook Stock and can do whatever he wants. Facebook has faced so much controversy the apology it always gives in each trophy has been abbreviated. It was the New York Times who first came up with this idea of abbreviating it. Im going to have to brush up on my harry stiles. Lets get a look at the forecast this morning. Meteorologist kari hall tracking that and the beautiful scenery behind you. Where is that . Looking at the berkeley hills, a beautiful start to this tuesday morning. If you are going to be out, just a heads up there may be still some drifts of smoke coming through. The air quality is pretty good. Early in the day is best to get outside. This is looking at particulate matter and does show for wildfire smoke weve seen the smoke drifting to the east and away from much of the bay area. A slight shift could really change that. Its been coming in from the west which pushes the smoke to the east. As the winds increase and becomes a little bit more gusty, it could bring in some of the hazy conditions and that smoke. New wildfires would change those conditions as well. Were in the 60s near the coast. Our inland temperatures will warm slightly over the next few days but we will still have some 60s near the coast and in San Francisco and some 90s for the inland valleys. Besides that one big Traffic Alert you have. Were looking at fremont. As you come up past mission, it doesnt stand out. A pretty good session here if youre traveling from fremont its critical. Right lanes are blocked. We dont have an eto when lanes are expected to open. Probably not great. Use caution. No metering lights registered but slowing in the middle lanes will turn on in the next few minutes. Back to you. Coming up nbc bay area responds. Reporter a local company says they can help prevent coronavirus. Uncle sam says thats bogus. Im investigator chris chmura, nbc bay area responds next. Menutaur make it a double, yeah nice mane try my 5. 99 southwest cheddar cheeseburger combo and make it a double for a buck more. Order now with no contact delivery. 6 24 this morning. Welcome back to you. A new debate about the spread of the coronavirus is really prompting a stern warning this morning. Doctors from 32 countries are urging the World Health Organization to change its guidelines and acknowledge the virus can spread and linger in the air longer. Right now w. H. O. Guidelines say the virus is spread from large respiratory droplets and they usually fall to the ground quickly. Smaller virus particles can actually float in the air much longer and can be inhaled. W. H. O. Has argued that theres still not enough evidence to support that claim. One bay area companys ad meant to attract customers has caught the federal governments eye. That company said that its products stops coronavirus, so uncle sam told it to stop. Lets turn to consumer investigator chris chmura. He has cautioned us about companies that are claiming to help us prevent or treat covid19. Reporter good morning. We have. The federal government has warned us all, too, because at this time there is no known prevention, treatment, or cure for covid19. That takes us to revival hydration in San Francisco. It sells vitamininfused iv drips for things like hangovers and jet lag resilience and cold and flu recovery. The federal trade Commission Says it recently added coronavirus to its sales pitch saying things like keep corona out with our immunity treatment. Immunity strong, covid out. And stop the coronavirus and flatten the curve with one of their products. The ftc sent revival hydration a warning letter saying it was unlawfully advertising that certain products or services treat or prevent covid19. We asked them to talk with us for the story. It did not respond. The ftc ordered revival to remove all covid19 claims. We checked. We checked its website, social media accounts and saw no remaining references to coronavirus. If you suspect an ad of overselling covid19 you can tell the ftc. We posted a link to our website, nbcbayarea. Com responds. Thank you, chris. Im happy to report this next story. The perfect summer body is out and the post quarantine bodies are now in. A recent nutrisystem said poem gained more than 15 pounds during selfisolation. Dont beat yourself up. People say theyre eating more comfort food at home. And while were at home comfy clothes dominate. None of the waist bands that keep us in check. The survey Shows Nearly Half of us are only wearing sweatpants or yoga pants at home. Many say they cant even remember the last time they wore pants. That may not be fully appropriate. You have to put your jeans on once in a while and go, maybe. A lot of people wear the shorts and up here is a button down and a jacket. If you can do it from home, do it. Yeah, but you have to keep yourself in check somehow, right . You do. Once in a while put them on. The doors will open, well be allowed back outside and youre going to need to tighten up the tummy. I know. Its going to be like last call at the bar. Oh, my goodness. What is happening . Coming up next we have more bay area counties that are looking at scaling back some of their reopenings as cases of coronavirus spike. Next, a live report from twocounties no doubt watching the case very closely this morning. Plus, Restaurant Owners and customers look confused over the rules for Outdoor Dining in the south bay. Well, it began weeks ago but turns out without the states blessing. Coming up for you when that confusion may be cleared up. Youre watching today in the bay. Today in the bay continues right now. Thanks so much for joining us on this tuesday morning. Im kris sanchez in for laura garcia. And im marcus washington. Mike is keeping his eye on the commute this morning. First to meteorologist kari hall with a look at the forecast for today. Kari, were expected to have a better day today when it comes to air quality . Well, as of right now it starts out with some better air quality but a slight shift in the wind could change that very quickly. Lets head over to concord where we are looking at temperatures starting out nice and cool. We are in the mid50s, but as we go through the day you can see that its going to heat up and by 1 00 will be in the low 80s. Checking out High Temperatures upper 80s for the inland valleys while the coastal areas will stay in the 60s and also much more of an ocean breeze picking up as our winds increase, also. So, too, will the fire danger. Well talk more coming up in a few minutes. Mike, that Traffic Alert still happening in the east bay . Continuing in fremont in to sunol. Counsel counter commute. It slows as you approach south. Youre jammed up with two of the next exits auto mall parkway and loosening up right now. Theyre clearing debris but right lane blocked there. The rest of your directions are fine. The other highlight, the metering light is turned on just before 6 30. The backup filling in all lanes, gradually filling it in but there is your wait. Back with other transportation news, marcus. Breaking news for you this morning. Thousands of layoffs may soon be coming to United Airlines as soon as october 1st. So the company telling workers that they received socalled notices. Airlines cannot lay off anyone until then. It gives a 60day warning, something united is required to do. A live look at sfo which is, of course, a major united hub. Air travel has been down at times more than 90 during the signs of rebounding during thew. Well, happening now there are concerns thaty area right n up later today. Th5,400 acres since starting sunday afternoon. Right now it is about 20 contained. Dozens of evacuation orders, however, are still in effect. Firefighters say it started as a structure fire that quickly got out of control. And new details right now about firefighters at the scene of a grass fire that forced evacuations yesterday in fairfield. That one burned about 75 acres near Mountain Meadows road. Not too big but the flames got dangerously close to about 30 homes and a church making people there very nervous. The fire, thankfully, was going upwards because the wind was going all of that way. All of a sudden it turned this way and went up to the hills there. Firefighters also spent a long night knocking down a fire that burned more than 200 acres east of rodeo in the hills between interstate 80 and highway 4. As of 7 00 last night, which was the last update from firefighters it was 50 contained. Well, california set a new record here for the most new cases of coronavirus in one day. Counties reported more than 8,200 cases just yesterday breaking the record set last we. The new numbers in the bay area show there are now more than 28,000 cases with Solano County reporting the most cases following the Holiday Weekend. More than 600 bay area patients have died. And with no letup in site more bay area counties say they have no choice but to dial back on the reopenings. Today in the bays Cierra Johnson is live to explain the issue north bay leaders are really struggling with. Cierra . Reporter according to the state of california counties that remain on the monitoring list for three consecutive days are required by the state to make changes to businesses that are already in operation. One of the biggest is ending Indoor Dining. Leaders in napa and Sonoma County fear their numbers have already reached that point and they may be forced this week to dial back on Indoor Dining. Now according to the press democrat and napa county we should know whether we have met that threshold in napa and sonoma. Numbers for the counties are delayed today because of the Holiday Weekend but Health Experts in both counties are seeing their numbers rise and per the governors orders they are preparing for inservice, Family Entertainment centers like bowling alleys. The closures are expected to be in place for three weeks. Now this has already Indoor Dining last week. Marin halted the Carryout Service or rather Indoor Dining service. Carryout and outdoor seating was still allowed. The latest setback has been a tough pill for businesses to swallow but its not just Business Owners in the north bay that are having trouble. Across the state businesses are being penalized. Statewide 52 businesses received citations from the state. So you can see the state really taking the outbreak and the uptick very seriously in the state of california. Were live near the golden gate bridge, Cierra Johnson for today in the bay. All right, cierra, thank you. We know there is a lot of confusion in the south bay. State agents cracked down on Outdoor Dining over the weekend in Santa Clara County. Some of it has to do with the countys application to further move into the reopening process. The county never had that application approved by the state. So now theyre updating the application while maintaining contact with state health leaders. It doesnt make sense, i dont think, in the sense preventing Outdoor Dining in morgan hill while allowing Indoor Dining in san mateo is sort of nonsense. It really is confusing. Santa clara county arguing Outdoor Dining was not prohibited in the states order. Later today organizers of a Facebook Advertising boycott will come facetoface with Mark Zuckerberg. The social media giant is under fire over how it handles hate speech. Today in the bays bob redell joins us live. Bob, what are the organizers demanding . Reporter well, kris, the organizers of th the Stophateforprofit Campaign have ten demands they plan on stressing during the meeting today with Mark Zuckerberg, oth dedicated to civil rights, refund advertisers whose ads were shown next to hateful content, and submit the Third Party Audits of hate speech and misinformation on the site. A coalition of civil rights want to pressure advertisers to stop spending on facebooks platform and they wanted to do this in revolt to the social media giants handling of hate speech. Hundreds of businesses have pulled ads, recent additions include walgreens, best buy, ford and adidas. Now in response Mark Zuckerberg announced policy changes in a recent virtual town hall meeting. To crack down on Voter Suppression and to fight hate speech. We need concrete measurable change and we need it now. Clearly advertisers dont want reporter the boycotts Financial Impact on facebooks bottom line is questionable. Facebooks top 100 advertisers account for only 6 of its ad revenue. Tech journalist cara swisher points out facebook has 8 million advertisers. In her opinion thats just a drop in the bucket to them. Reporting live, bob redell, today in the bay. Thank you, bob. All right, lets get a look at our temperature trend in pleasanton as we get ready for today. Were looking at a start in the low 50s and as we go into the rest of the day were starting to warm up. Were at 80 degrees at 1 00 this afternoon. As we check out our High Temperatures for today, were going to see a wide range from the low 60s near the coast, upper 60s in San Francisco, and some upper 80s in parts of the inland east bay and north bay. Mike, whats happening with the Traffic Alert . Kari, we still have it in fremont. A big look at the bay, first of all, and will show you that your commute directions are great. Typically a counter commute, basically opposite what it was before the quarantine. Northbound 680 is slowing from mission boulevard south up to auto mall parkway. For a few minutes it saw speeds improving a bit but then they clamped back down again. Chp has not budged from seeing crash and debris. A little bit of slowing. The bay bridge toll plaza, where the metering lights are on, the backup is there. The middle lanes still showing some movement. Of course carpooling is your big advantage if you can do so. Back to you. All right. Thank you, mike. Up next, covid cases at the state capitol. Who is testing positive and the Immediate Impact on government business in sacramento. Reporter backtoschool plans are shaping up and some students are being asked to learn from home. Just ahead why parents say that puts them at a disadvantage. And it is now time for those graduates to take a bow. Job well done. This is our moment where we really like to congratulate all of our 2020 graduates who made it through the school year but, of course, the pandemic forced them to not have their official ceremony. So these are six High School Graduates we want to congratulate this morning and say, hey, job well done. Again, we want to congratulate all of our graduates out there, job well done. Good morning. Right now at 6 44 we take a live look outside in walnut creek. Well see our temperatures warming up, and we may also have some drifts of smoke coming in. Im tracking the wildfire near gilroy. Well talk more about that and the forecast coming up in a few minutes. And im still tracking a Traffic Alert. This is the only real issue going on in the bay right now. North 680 jammed up into sunol but clearing by the time you get to auto mall parkway. A look at our top stories now and a reality that seems to be sinking in that our schools will not be ready for students in just more than a months time on what is supposed to be backtoschool time. Roz plater is live in palo alto with details leaving some parents alarmed and frazzled, roz. Reporter yeah, because a lot of plans call for students to learn from home and the parents say that really puts them in a bind. They have to work and really cant afford to keep their kids at home. The latest plans were learning about are in east contra costa county. The Brentwood Union elementary School District, for example, would be 100 Distance Learning online. The Liberty Union high School District would be an every other day format with 100 Distance Learning as an option. In the oakley Union ElementarySchool District 100 Distance Learning with the option to move to a hybrid schedule when it was deemed safe. Last week the palo alto board of education signed off on a plan to bring Elementary Students back to school for facetoface learning with middle and High School Students primarily learning from home. That debate is playing out online with parents on social media. Here is a brentwood dad wondering how theyll live on only one paycheck. He says for my family either my wife or i will have to leave our career to teach our fifth grader. But some parents are defending it. Here is a dad saying they did the best they could to take care of students and teachers. Dont forget teachers are also parents. This is likely a preview of what we will see in other districts around the bay area announce their plans coming up for the fall. Live in palo alto, im roz plater for today in the bay. Such a difficult time and a hot topic around the dinner table and the breakfast table, too. Thank you, roz. The state assembly will remain in recess after being postponed indefinitely. Speaker Anthony Rendon says five people who work in the assembly have tested positive for covid19. He says the decision is to protect lawmakers, staff and the public. Meanwhile the president has demanded that school kids return to school in the fall. But, scott mcgrew, he really doesnt have the power to do that. He does not have any power to do that. Schools are still managed on the local level. The president of the United States cannot order schools to be open. He had a simple tweet. Schools must reopen in the fall. The president and first lady will attend a meeting will reopening schools. Video of them leaving air force one over the weekend after their trip to south dakota. The governor was on the flight on air force one. We know the governor was in close contact with kimberly guilfoyle. Coronavirus is getting very close to the president is the concern. The governor was cleared to fly by the secret service. The use of confederate battle flags at nascar races where theyve been banned. She says the president actually has no opinion about the confederate battle flag even though he has tweeted about it more than once. The president was also asked why he asked for an apology from race car driver Bubba Wallace over what the president says was a hoax about a noose. Now, setting the record straight, it was not Bubba Wallace who found the rope. It was not Bubba Wallace who reported it to nascar. The fbi determined the rope was there before wallace was assigned the garage in talladega. It did lead to a heartwarming moment of unity among nascar drivers. The president tweeted a demand from wallace to apologize. Here is the press secretary. Its important that we point out the fact that there was no hate crime, the fbi concluded that. President trump was merely saying mr. Wallace should agree with the consensus. No, hes asking wallace to apologize and she was never able to explain why. You can find me on twitter. Im scottmcgrew. The warriors care from one their star players. We should take care when we are out and about. We try to find some sense of normal, these masks are super important. Continue to wear them, look out for yourself and for others around you. A lot of Golden State Warrior masks out there. Steph says that he is ready to move forward with basketball soon but that is not going to happen until next season. We can probably all agree that this year was pretty much snake bitten from the start. It was a rough end of last season for sure. I was talking to a friend yesterday planning to celebrate the big 40 this year. Suck it up for next year. Fog like celebrating your 41st. Thats the deal. Theres all kinds of Party Supplies for that. We are celebrating another great day for us out there. I just love that sunrise. Its beautiful. We know a lot of times we have a lot of colors in the sky because of a bad reason, this is looking from the Santa Cruz Mountains over towards the crews fire over just to the east of gilroy. So this is a lot of smokes settling in santa clara fire. Ats we look at the Current Conditions there the temperature is at 50 degrees and the humidity is high. So hopefully were not seeing it spread as rapidly as yesterday afternoon when the winds started to pick up. We are still expecting some of the drifts of smoke to come no parts of the bay. But right now with the light wind pushing it off to the east our air quality is pretty good. If you have breathing problems the smoke has bothered you, now is a good time to get outside. A slight shift in the wind could bring in that smoke especially into parts of the south county and into parts of the south bay. Our wind direction makes all the difference. And with a northwesterly wind its blowing the smoke away from us. That would make it really smoky but were also going to see the winds increasing as we go throughout the day up to about 15 to 25 miles per hour. Our temperatures reach into the upper 60s near the coast, we have some low 70s for the bay and then some upper 80s for parts of the inland east bay. Were going to get slightly hotter over the next couple of days. The warmest spots are looking at low 90s while San Francisco will stay in the 60s over the next several days. Mike, whats the update on the Traffic Alert . The update is no new news. We do have more slowing. Northbound 680 through fremont. Weve been tracking this as you head up in towards sunol. The backup because your right lanes are blocked. You travel north from mission boulevard. Weve seen fluctuations in the speeds when your right lanes are blocked, two left lanes are open. Folks familiar with the area want to use mission boulevard as an alternate but a lot of signals. I say counter commute because it comes in out of the altamont and there is not really a commute there this morning. No other real slowdowns except for the Traffic Alert in fremont and the bay bridge toll plaza because the metering lights are on. The span moves well. Back to you. Thanks, mike. Happening now for you chinas flood Defense Network is being put to the test. Heavy rainfall in southern and eastern parts of the country triggering the floods and mud slides. So far flooding destroyed 17,000 homes costing about 6 billion in economic loss. 121 people dead or missing. Next, a quick look at our top stories as california breaks records wit coronavirus cases surging all up and down the state. Ave the latest numbers and what it could mean for upcoming reopenings. Youre watching today in the bay. Welcome back. It is 6 56. Here are the top stories were following. This is something we really dont want to hear. Thousands of layoffs could be coming s the company sent workers what they say is a warn notice. They have to do that legally. Airlines cannot lay off any workers until october because of a stimulus agreement. And a live look at sfo which is a major united hub. And happening now a live look at a park in gilroy, the station area where firefighters are really getting the chance to rest after working those front lines of the crews fires. Its a tough one. This is easily the largest fire now burning in the bay area, having burned about 5,400 acres since it started sunday afternoon.
