This is near lawrence expressway. No word on the condition of the victims or the suspect description. Of course we will bring you updates throughout the morning. The white house is downplaying dire predictions that the daily desk could double by june of this year. Today in the bays tracie potts joins us with more on that and President Trump on the road for the first time in a month, tracie . Reporter just over a month, actually, laura. Hes heading to arizona to see a mask production facility. Last in the state he said we could be fine by april and now its may and there are some dire numbers to report this morning. The New York Times cites a report predicting 200,000 cases and nearly 300,000 deaths a day by june 1st, nearly doubling what were seeing now. A separate university of washington model shows deaths skyrocketing to 135,000 by august. Theres certainly going to be more transmission, more cases and, unfortunately, more deaths. Reporter as much of the country starts to reopen theres open defiance of social distancing. Police are cracking down in some areas. Dont make us treat you like a criminal. Reporter as other states back off. We dont want to make criminals out of innocent people. Reporter unemployment expected to explode. I expect a number between 16 and 20 unemployment. Were going to need a phase four deal. Reporter instead of working on coronavirus funding the senate is back in washington approving a backlog of judges. I dont think anybody could seriously argue that filling Critical National security posts is not essential senate business. Judicial nominees, legal immunity for big corporations, in all due respect, republican leader, these are not the nations most urgent priorities right now. So this is very good news for local businesses. Under Governor Newsoms order florists and bookstores can reopen along with other nonessential Stores Starting this friday. They have to use social distancing measures and do curbside pickup. So perhaps take mom out for a stroll and shopping this mothers day, all local governments are looking at ways to reopen businesses safely. Mayor london breed says shes open to ideas and so are store owners. And the goal is to do it and do it responsibly whenever the opportunity presents itself to open anything in the city. For us, it is essential for us to stay and keep that connection with our customers and that were at the top of mind for when somebody is making a book purchase, theyre coming to us. The hospital says new protocols are now in place including daily screening of employees and patients when they arrive at the clinic. San francisco county excuse me, San Francisco continues to push and provide more for those who are working on the front lines of the crisis. Today supervisors will debate adding incentive pay and hazard pay for employees and homeless shelters and other high occupancy essential job sites. The city this week also finalized a Free Testing Program for all essential workers whether or not they show symptoms. Happening today Santa Clara County is hoping to vote on a plan aimed at trying to maintain the current drop in all the congestion we see on the roads even during even when the pandemic ends. A proposal calls for commute free commitment from Silicon Valley companies. It would encourage extending telecommuting to cut down on air pollution. A look at how clear it is. The spare the air season began yesterday and of course a record low number of cars on the road. They have dropped 20 or more on the pandemic and that is good news. Its been clear the past few days. That very nice weather and some fresh air but we have started to see a few more cars out on the roads recently so well see how that goes with our air quality as we start out this morning its a chilly start in the north bay down to 41 degrees in napa and in santa rosa but compare that to concord where we have 56 degrees and were in the low 50s in san jose. It does, though, bring up the question how many Smaller Companies will choose to stay here if and when the pandemic ends. San francisco has some of the highest rents in the world and up until now the justification many had was this is where the best talent is. You have to come to the bay area. But this whole idea of working from home may change that as both employees and bosses realize it is possible to conduct business from your home and it kind of doesnt working receiving jobless benefits, california, its costing enough money california has become the very first state to borrow money from the federal government to pay for jobless benefits. The journal says california asks the u. S. Treasury for 348 million. Nearly 4 million californians are out of work and on unemployment benefits. Speaking of numbers, new numbers reinforce what weve been talking about with houses. Not only are prices nationwide not going down, theyre going up. Far fewer people buying homes, of course, but demand is down but so, too, are supplies. Far too few people selling. The latest numbers from the National Association of realtors show, and, again, nationwide, home p this month compared to last year when life was normal. Meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that, starting out nice and cool this morning, kari. Yeah, and weve also seen a lot of clear skies around the bay area. Here is a look at that view as youre heading through dublin. We can see a lot of the headlights there on our camera. More people getting up and out the door. If youre still at home and thinking of something nice to do outside in the north bay around petaluma, we are going to see temperatures in the middle of the afternoon at about 80 degrees. The wind at about 10 to 15. So if youre grilling, its going to blow the smoke away from the patio area. Also warm temperatures going into the afternoon. Enjoy dinner outside with all of that sunshine. It wont be as hot as the weather were getting ready for. As we look at our high temperatures for the day, low 80s for the north bay. Coastal areas will stay in the 60s. I dont think well see much of a warmup even by the end of the weekend. A wide range in temperatures across the bay area. As we check out our forecast we are going to see High Pressure continuing to build here and that will keep it very warm especially as it moves right over the bay. That gives us that sinking air and as it sinks it compresses and warms up. The good news is we do have some relief coming our way by the end of the weekend and we may even see some rain in the forecast next week. Here is a look at our sevenday forecast showing the temperatures that will be in the low 80s, upper 80s tomorrow and then some 90s for a couple of days. And saturday is also pretty warm but then by sunday its feeling much better and, of course, thats mothers day. The majority of the cases and all of Santa Clara County and new data shows that latinos are getting sick at a higher rate accounting for 38 of cases but only 27 of the population n. Anta clara county community a reminder the shelter order says you can only socialize with people in your same household so maybe we do things just a little bit differently. The police chief says hes not going to send his officers into the middle of Something Like that. However, his job is to enforce Public Safety not necessarily the Public Health order. Bay area Law Enforcement agencies are cracking down on people who are violating that shelter at home order. Today in the bays bob redell joins us live now. The mayor of San Francisco is issuing her own warning this morning. Reporter maintain that social distance or one of the citys most popular parks could be shut down. Were talking about delores park. This past weekend a San Francisco police chief bill scott says that a lot of people hung out at the park and did no. Its not okay to gather in large groups. San francisco plans to keep an eye out this coming week. Along the san mateo coastline hundreds of people were in violation of the stayathome order. This according to pacifica police. The Police Department says between friday and sunday they contacted over 1,400 people. Of those they ordered almost 300 to leave the area because they traveled more than ten miles from their home for Recreational Purposes in violation of the order. Eight people were given written citations. And this past saturday santa cruz shut down between 11 00 a. M. And 5 00 p. M. To discourage outoftowners from visiting their area while giving locals an opportunity during the sunset hours. Thanks for the latest there, bob. Two new testing sites are opening in the north bay. Both are opening as part of Governor Newsoms plan tteing s. Similar sites opened yesterday including one in san jose. The sites opening today are in santa rosa and petaluma. Both are by appointment only. New details this morning, a new ucsf study focusing on San Franciscos Mission District finding that lowincome minority men to be more at risk of getting the coronavirus. Researchers tested 3,000 residents and workers finding more than 2 tested positive. The vast majority were men, many of whom were financially impacted from the pandemic and could not work from home. Here are the latest numbers for you here in the bay area. Nearly 8,800 hundred cases. Santa clara county added 13 cases but that is its lowest one day total since march 20th. 312 people have died. Workers at two San FranciscoTrader Joe Stores have tested positive for covid19. According to the chronicle they stopped working there april 10th and coworkers learned of the diagnosis a week ago. Then on sunday an employee at the 9th street location south of market tested positive. Crews did a deep cleaning overnight and reopened yesterday. Despite the pandemic Northern California hospitals on the whole are actually seeing far less emergency room visits and in some cases lowering staff levels. Doctors at uc davis say the emergency room is 50 as busy as it was before the pandemic. Some of it may have to do with many people hunkering down at home. Others may simply fear the risk of being exposed at an e. R. One uc davis doctor says the staff is being encouraged to take time off now this is before a possible surge in the coronavirus patients coming later. We are removing nurses and physicians who are still being paid but were giving them breaks from shifts we dont need them there. When the surge comes they might be working double time. Mid month last month about 1 of those coming through the doors at uc davis were testing positive. Experts are trying to relieve some of the mental stress when they know they have to deliver at a hospital where fr contracting the virus and then even passing it on to their new baby. The president of the march of dimes says there are ways to manage those fears. As much as possible to manage that stress and anxiety with plenty of rest, exercise, breathing, all the things that we know to do but also just do the things all the rest of us all have to do, right, maintaining our social distance, doing proper hand washing, hygiene, wearing a mask. They recommendto find out wh been made and how to prepare. Oakland is launching a new program to help those trying to make it in the bay during the pandemic. They will provide houses to the homeless and those most at risk. And its part of what the city is calling Operation Home base. They provide three meals per day for those residents. Chp telling us a car chase suspect dumped nearly a Million Dollars out the window. Officers telling us this all happened when they tried to pull over a car in merced and that driver just took off. Chp says the driver dumped that money all at once in boxes as you see here so they were able to retrieve all of it. That person eventually surrendered. Officers also arrested two other drivers and say that all were involved in an illegal drug deal. Did you see this . That weaving car. A 5yearold utah boy now in hot water after he got into his family suv. He was planning on driving to california. Probably pretty obvious why troopers became suspicious yesterday. They saw the car going 30 miles an hour moving around the road erratically. They say they found the 5yearold struggling to see over the steering wheel. He told them he was heading to california and wanted to buy a lamborghini. Both parents were at work and a sibling was supposed to be watching that little boy. Did he have the money to buy the lamborghini . 5 48. A Central Valley nursing home is now battling a large outbreak of the coronavirus. This is in Kingston Health care center in bakersfield. At least 40 people infected. More than half the staff have been infected. Its not clear if any have been hospitalized or died. They are dusting off air force one for its first trip in i think over a month. The president is heading to phoenix. Yeah, hes going to visit a manufacturing plant where they we dont know if the president will be wearing a mask. We do know everyone who is going to come into close contact with him during his trip will be tested ahead of time for covid19. He said he would be open to wearing a mask but said, quote, he wasnt it was politically correct. This will be mr. Trumps first trip outside of washington since he went to norfolk in february. The senate is back in session holding its first meeting yesterday. Most senators wore masks but not all. The house is determined its still too dangerous to meet. A Senate Committee will question john ratcliffe, nominated by President Trump to be the next director of national intelligence. This is not actually the first time that he has had his name put forward. It was withdrawn earlier because many in the senate didnt figure he had the experience necessary to be the director of national intelligence. But right now Richard Grinnell is.
