Developing for you this morning a new Homeland Security report claims china deliberately hid the severity of the coronavirus in the early months of the outbreak. Live for us in washington, tracie, is this true, the report is saying china used the extra months to stockpile the muchneeded medical supplies. Reporter marcus, an Associated Press report, nbc has not confirmed it. We have not seen the document theyre reporting about. According to ap its a fourpage intelligence reports that says china knew about this virus and that they delayed reporting in order to stockpile, that there was evidence they were bringing in more protective gear and supplies than they were exporting because they knew how bad the virus was going to be. We have yet to confirm that. But what we are finding is that the u. S. , the Trump Administration is reacting to it. Secretary of state mike pompeo saying that he has seen convincing evidence that china knew about this virus long before they reported it. Now what we know is that it was first reported december 31st, reported to the u. S. In early january. One of those doctors is now back home in menlo park. Today in the bays kris sanchez is joining us live now with what that doctor experienced. Reporter hi there, marcus. Weve heard a lot of stories about what its like for the Health Care Workers on the front lines in the hardest hit wards in new york city. And now were hearing from one of our very own bay area doctors about this, someone who volunteered to go and try to help give their colleagues a little bit of a breather. A doctor is a surgeon at stanford who is back home in menlo park but says working with the sickest covid19 patients in new york felt like bringing a knife to a gunfight, her words. One night it took four doctors to stabilize a patient, but even then the situation, she says, felt hopeless. By the way, the doctor used Vacation Days to go to new york as soon as it was clear the bay area situation was stable. I felt a lot of guilt for not being on the frontline and not able to help patients. At first i stayed in california and wondered if i might be needed there. When it became clear things were mostly going to be okay there because we sheltered in place so early, i looked at what happens happening in new york and pretty quickly decided i wanted to come and help. Reporter you have to love that shes wearing her San Francisco giants ppe. She is back here at home but this morning on the today show she and three other doctors will talk more about that experience. You hear a lot of people saying its not that bad. I dont even know anybody who has gotten it. I think the issue is we cant see whats happening inside the covid units because its not safe. Live to hayward this morning where firefighters are at the scene of a fire. Bob redell arrived just now. Bob, whats going on there . Reporter no rescues as far as we know. That i think is what was being heard on the scanner. We spoke with a firefighter who indicated everyone got out on their own according to other conversations i had with residents. This is a 51 unit condo complex here in hayward. And if you look the fire ladder is up. Thats where the fire was located further into the building on the third floor unit, confined to that unit. A lot of smoke coming out of the window. People did have to evacuate and speaking with the hoa president of this condo and also with the fire captain or battalion chief, they did indicate everyone was able to get out on their own and no injuries. The big concern the firefighter said to me even though it was confined to one unit they would have to do a lot of water damage because they did pour a lot of water into this fire. If you look here and see the balcony you can see the water water falling down. It was not involved, it gives you a sense how much water was poured up there and how it spread to the other units. There will be some displacement of the people who live in this condo complex. The good news is no one was hurt, no one was killed in this fire. Reporting live, bob redell, today in the bay.
