Downloaded a ventilator manual and taught employees overnight how to repair ventilators. They then set up an Assembly Line and went to work. A week ago none of us knew anything about ventilators other than we knew what it was being used for, okay . But at the end of the day, here is what we knew. Manufacturing is in our dna. Innovation is in our dna. One treatment that we know works are ventilators. So we need more of them. Reporter the ventilators theyre working on are expired or out of warranty. A company has already delivered 80 ventilators to the state to be dispersed at hospitals, and today alone employees are inside working to prepare 120 more. And the companys facility back east is also working to refurbish ventilators. So this really is Silicon Valley innovation at its best during a real time of need. Terry . Thanks so much. The demand for ventilators continuing to rise. Governor newsom saying icu and hospitalization skyrocketed overnight. Newsom says icu numbers spiked 105 overnight in california. Hospitalizations up about 38 . The governor says cases increased 22 from yesterday. About 90,000 people have been test sod far in california. Even on a rainy day, the coast and bay area parks can draw a lot of people, but today very little activity as parks and beaches close parking lots trying to keep people at home and healthy. Nbc bay areas Christie Smith joins us live from San Franciscos marina green to explain. You got the place to yourself, christie. Reporter yeah, thats right. Were starting to get some sprinkles out here again, so its not really the kind of weather that a lot of folks want to run out in anyway. But we did see some people out here earlier, and boy, i tell you, some of these popular outdoor areas like this, people are finding that the parking lots are closed and its very clear whats not available. At the marina green in San Francisco, people are still getting in a run or bundling up for a walk. But the parking lot is closed. Same story at ocean beach and the beach chalet. The idea is to get people not to drive in for their exercise under the shelter at home order and slow the spread of covid19 as cases in the city rise. But last weekend people flocked to coastal towns, trails, and beaches. It did. It made it very challenging to keep people distanced and to really run this in a safe manner. Reporter at sams chowder house near half moon bay, theyre doing takeout and say changes theyve seen in recent days are making a big difference. People are getting it, and they appreciate the support. Each day its gotten progressively better, and today by far, as you can see, you know, people are really doing the right thing. Theyre staying in their cars. Theyre placing an order. If they have to come periodically someone needs to use the restroom, thats happening. But for the most part, people have done a great job of adjusting pretty quickly. Reporter near montara state beach, the parking lot is closed and so are other coastal access lots. Still some people parked along highway 1. San mateo county parks decided to close parks and parking lots after seeing a big jump in people using trails last weekend. I think the rain is our friend this weekend in terms of, you know, people tend to want to stick more indoors rather than go out in the rain. So obviously were going to be looking at all that data. Reporter now, as you can see, there are still a few people out here walking and getting a little exercise and also of course those signs that they have up around San Francisco reminding people to maintain that minimum sixfoot social distance. Now, one of the things the city was talking about is when they close these lots, kind of keeping an eye on the neighborhood and making sure that those streets and parking areas dont get clogged up. But i spoke with neighbors, and they say theyre not seeing that today. Reporting live in San Francisco, Christie Smith, nbc bay area news. Christie, thanks very much. A free testing site in the east bay continues to see long lines. This is the covid19 testing site in hayward on huntwood avenue. Hundreds of people have been showing up every day this week, and today is no different. You can see the long line of drivers but not everyone is getting tested. The site is limited to people with fever over 100 degrees and other symptoms of covid19. More relief on the way for the south bay homeless population. Santa clara county says it has secured the use of 172 motel rooms in san jose, santa clara, and gilroy. Its also prepping the county fairgrounds to be used as a temporary shelter. And all current shelters are now operating around the clock. Stop overbuying. That is the message on the peninsula as one supervisor says if things dont change, there could be a new law aimed at shoppers. Nbc bay areas Sergio Quintana live in daly city with the details on that. Sergio . Reporter as im sure youve seen, there are now long lines outside of supermarkets. Thats due in part because some of those supermarkets are limiting the number of customers theyre allowing into the store so that they can try to enforce that proper social distancing. Unfortunately once customers are getting inside, some of them are clearing out the shelves. Were now getting into the end of the second week of bay area shelter at home orders and grocers across the region say some shoppers are continuing to snap up some food and supplies faster than they can restock. Some items like hand sanitizers, masks, disinfectant spray and others continue to be unavailable in stores or even online. Its for that reason that San Mateo County supervisor is urging people to stop panic buying. He may introduce county wide legislation thats modeled after policies some stores are already considering. Theyre saying in some stores you can only purchase two of these items or three of these items. Thats what theyre trying to do, selfregulate. And so theyre trying to create a policy, the grocery association, which i agree with, thats not just for safeway, not just for trader joes. Theyre trying to create a policy that creates uniformity through all stores. Reporter now, according to the california grocers association, the Coronavirus Crisis has not disrupted the food supply chain. There are plenty of groceries and other necessities available, but it just takes some time for trucks to deliver and store workers to restock everything because of the recent high demand. Supervisor canepa says hes going to go ahead and observe how recent policies are going to affect things before he considers moving forward with this legislation. Reporting live in daly city, im Sergio Quintana, nbc bay area news. Sergio, thanks very much. Not heavily, but its been kind of on and off all day long. The wet weather has made a return, not just San Francisco but around the bay area. Meteorologist rob mayeda tracking these weekend showers for us and he joins us live now not from here in the studio but from his athome Weather Center. Its been kind of interesting to watch here from our temporary Weather Center in danville. Well show you as you look outside, we do have those showers. The radar starting to light up as more rain starts to cross the coast. Were seeing it right now in san jose. Kind of a damp saturday evening under way. You see the view there. San francisco, rain drops on the lens, which obviously means the radar is quite green where you are right now. San francisco, some showers again approaching from the west, and were seeing more of this starting to fill in around parts of the south bay around san jose. Youre probably noticing some of that rain into the trivalley and a little more in the north bay. Scattered showers for now but we expect as we head towards tomorrow morning, the rain rates will actually increase just before sunrise tomorrow morning. When we look at the rainfall totals between now and 11 00 tomorrow, some places around the Santa Cruz Mountains could be approaching an inch of rain. Coming up, when we expect the next rain to arrive coming up in our forecast in about ten minutes from now. Still ahead, in the battle against coronavirus, could Artificial Intelligence be a part of the answer . Were going to speak to a stanford professor about that. And a special performance for those in quarantine. How one bay area man is doing something good to cheer up his neighbors. When we face adversity, we find a way through it. Its about taking care of each other. Its the small parts that make a big difference. At chevy, we promise to do ours. Were offering chevy owners complimentary onstar crisis assist services and wifi data. If you need a new chevy, interestfree financing for 84 months with deferred payments for 120 days on many of our most popular models. You may even shop online and take delivat home. Its their first food drivethru. It comes in addition to the popup pantries that opened over the past few weeks. This to support people struggling to buy food during this crisis. Usually the organization in a normal week serves about 144,000 people. Were going to see those numbers go up. Were already seeing more people who i had comments today that im out of work. My whole family is, you know, struggling right now. Were already seeing people who are going to be new in the line, so we see the need for food as going up. Today they prepared enough boxes for about 500 families. Each box has Fresh Produce and frozen meat. So much talk about combating the virus, flattening the curve, social distancing. One part of the solution, treatment. Could High Tech Solutions be part of it too . Joining me now is a stanford professor, russ altman. You are presenting a Virtual Conference on Artificial Intelligence this coming week. People watching the show right now and people who are going to be watching that conference, theyre asking what Artificial Intelligence can do to help come up with a treatment or maybe cure for coronavirus. What do you see . Yeah. So, you know, a. I. Is really good at finding patterns. We find patterns in the genome of the organism but also patterns in how patients respond to the disease and patterns in how it spreads and patterns in how society and humans respond to this amazing crisis. This conference is going to be about how we use these technologies to understand the virus in all these different levels, including how do we search for cures, how do we search for better ways to allocate resources. That sounds exciting. About what using Artificial Intelligence to talk about social distancing . Talk a little bit about that. Well, so, you know, people need to understand the why of social distancing, so well have a little bit of biology. They also have to understand how hard it is because we are physical people. We interact, and so a. I. Systems can be used to educate, also to remind because you can watch people, and you can say, hey, remember, you might not want to get so close. Were not doing that right now but these are the kinds of things people are working on. This is a researchoriented conference where we want to show people where the technologies are heading. And as far as a treatment for the covid19, do you have someone coming to your conference who is going to be im not asking someone to announce a sudden treatment that works for everyone, but are there developments happening that were going to be seeing at your conference . We have some very early work that will be presented in kind of the biology section where theres very preliminary evidence of youve heard about this in the news as well. Youve reported on this. These drugs that may be useful. Well have some mention of those. Well also have some addressing of the vaccine challenges and opportunities. So there wont be any big unveilings of miracle cures, but its going to be a very careful, scholarly discussion of whats really possible and what could happen in the coming months. And these are experts from not just stanford. Theyre from around the country, around the world maybe . Thats right. We made invitations broadly. Its amazing the way the Scientific Community has gathered together. People have put aside their normal projects and focused on this pandemic. I think its appropriate. Its very inspiring to see colleagues just retool their whole Research Effort to see how can they help. And how can someone take part in this or watch whats going on . Its going to be freely streamed by the Stanford Institute for human centered a. I. Its hai. Stanford. Edu. This is a freestanding institute at stanford that is devoted to making sure that a. I. Helps people. All right. Dr. Altman, thank you very much for the time. I find it all so encouraging. Thanks so much. Stay safe. Thanks very much. Rob mayeda is staying safe. Hes at home. Hes putting together a forecast, and no matter what you like, hes got it for you. Hes just in a generous mood today, rob. Yeah, it seems like weve got a little bit of everything outside. Weve got the rain. Weve got cool temperatures, clouds. As you see over my choeld, we do have a pretty active view on the radar. In san jose, the roadways there quite wet as light rain continues. 54 degrees. High today only 58 too, so a little bit chilly and cloudy outside today. Walnut creek, 56 degrees with mostly cloudy skies and clearly you see the rain in San Francisco with the drops on the lens. 55 degrees and winds at 8 miles per hour. Right now the radar shows you the rain moving into San Francisco. As you see there on the radar within the last few minutes, some rain showing up there offshore. San jose seeing the rain there too moving up towards the grade in the trivalley and into the north bay, showers continuing to move across the region as we continue to see a lot of moisture, a lot of clouds spilling in from the west, which hints at where things are headed for tomorrow morning. Slightly heavier rain to start the day. Youll notice this more, i think, for the morning forecast in terms of widespread rain potential. Morning temperatures starting off in the upper 40s. Highs tomorrow about the same we saw today, upper 50s to near 60. As we transition out of morning rain, oscarscattered showers an slight chance of a thundershower. Rain totals impressive when you take into account most of this falling for tomorrow morning. Areas in the Santa Cruz Mountains along the peninsula could see a half inch plus. Around san jose, maybe even close to a half inch of rain. Another locations about a quarter inch to a half inch of rain. Hour by hour, we think the peak is going to be at 6 00 a. M. Through about 10 00 a. M. For the afternoon, notice by 2 00, you see the rainbow like activity, that could indicate heavier showers, isolated showers for the afternoon. Check out the extended forecast here. Not much green on the map. We havent seen that in a while as High Pressure builds in. This is going to lead to warmer temperatures and the highs progressively trending warmer as we go through the week. As warm as upper 60s in San Francisco. A bit of a showery finish to the weekend. Inland locations warming through the 70s. Wednesday, thursday, friday, you see those temperatures starting to climb up. May even see some upper 70s as we approach next weekend. So this weekend ending on a showery note. Rain for tomorrow morning, but then more springlike weather toward the end of the week. Rob, sounds good. Thank you very much.
