Lets begin with the latest on the coronavirus pandemic the fergusderal government s to get widespread testeding up and running and hospitals brace for the hospital and 327 million americans adjust to a new way of life Morgan Radford is here with the late night developments. Governments try to make changes and keep up with containing that spread overnight, there really wasnt much social distancing as thousands of americans who had been in europe came back home only to be faced with massive crowds when they went through customs. Reporter another task briefing today at 5 00 p. M. But no word when the senate will vote on that relief measure. The president was definitive yesterday in the surprise press conference it woud pass Vice President expects bipartisan like in the white house. Almost everyone at yesterdays briefing was clear we are in the early stages of this crisis. The Surgeon General was explicit this will get worse before it gets better. From a financial perspective, treasury depth said negotiations with pelosi on more economic stimulus are ongoing only in the second inning of this in his words more stimulus will be needed now among the medical challenges getting more tests out the door and to those drivethru locations, Vice President pence is promising they will have more details today at 5 00 p. Mr. Pence has not been tested yet he said but they are establishing new protocols for anybody in close proximity to the president and Vice President and includes testing everyones temperatures and it happened to reporters yesterday inside and outside the briefing room. One reporter was turned away hans nichols, thank you very much lets bring . Joseph fair who what worked on pandemics around the world youve been a good barometer we have talked a lot the last week or so where we are in this crisis as we wake up on sunday morning, where are we as you heard over 3,000 cases. We know this virus can in fact, 2 to 3 people per confirmed case if you extrapolate even two times 3000 take us to number to 2 to 4 in the list of countries how many cases we have ourselves. We talked a lot about social distancing the last couple of weeks which i think some people have taken seriously and others not. Bars restaurant in new york and cities across the country packed and france last night closed its cafes and restaurants. Italy and spain on complete lockdown is the United States headed toward that where the country says we are closed for business . To be perfectly honestly, this is not meant to invoke panic i think we are heading toward that state. Half the people arent taking it seriously and half of the people are panicking. There is a middle ground we need to be in that middle ground and we hope that everyone would take it seriously but as you can see its not happening so france and italy and spain have all had to take those somewhat draconian measures to get people to take it seriously. St. Patricks day is two days and bars should be packed and should the bars be closed . Ideally, yes. I wouldnt recommend it any other time and personally love st. Patricks day and love to be in a bar at st. Patricks but this is not the time for that. This is a time to keep the measures in place and social distancing. We heard flatteningening the curve. Keep the spike down with the number of cases but we cant begin to know how many cases there are until widespread testing. What is the Progress Report to that will we have enough tests as dr. Anthony fauci the people who need a test can get one readily . We have heard a million tests in a week and its revised again and again. I think we are finally on the path to getting that testing in place but without it, we really dont know where to guide our intervention the only way to flatten that curve is identifying who is positive and who is negative, who is the most critical to get into care, who should selfisolate and take care of themselves at home because overwhelming message still is 80 are going to be fine, they will experience mild to moderate cold symptoms and just like you would handle any other cold, you can handle that usually by yourself at home but that 15 to 20 in the high risk categories which we lead the world in those high categories we need to isolate them and get into care as soon as possible to save lives. I know with will be talking to you more in the coming days and weeks. Thank you. Chuck todd is moderator of meet the press. Extraordinary week, chuck. Good morning we expected to be talking about a president ial debate do that later. Lets talk about the blwhite ho fergusons response. The president said days and weeks this would go away and remain call and not worry about it and he thought it was a democratic and media hoax covered so much. He snapped to attention this week with oval office address. What changed his posture toward a coronavirus . I think the facts on the ground have had to change his posture. I think the fact he has seen franklin the governors take the lead on this because i think the federal government feels as if its been a step behind or a week too late on some of these pronouncements and clearly the testing issue, i think, really has cost the federal government some credibility points, perhaps not just with the public but with some of their statement local partners also. A poll coming out today. The president has had an impact on how seriously people are taking this. It is amazing the partisan split that we see. Democrats are more likely to abide by the rules of social distancing and cancelling travel than the republicans by 20, 30 points its fascinating to see the the president s approach to this has an impact. We know he came into contact last week with maralago with bristlian who later tested positive for coronavirus yet he is still at that event on friday shaking hands with people and said he was tested and came back negative what kind of message are the president and federal government project that its not projecting right now . I think that is it. It feels like not a unified message out there how seriously this needs to be taken you were talking to the doctor about bars and restaurants there is clearly a concern that the guidelines that the federal government is offering are basically being consumed as, all right, things that you should try to do, if its not too much of an inconvenience. So they are definitely, i think, with the lack of the federal government sort of all hands on deck, you know, imagine what a previous president would be doing when it comes to getting celebrities it help out, famous people to help out i notice the governor of louisiana has coach o doing a psa to say follow the protocol, do this. This is i think is a problem with the federal government response right now. This was supposed to be a big debate in arizona with an awed y audience with Bernie Sanders and joe biden and that has been cancelled. Primaries being postponed across the country. What is the future of this nominating process and this entire election look like. Its about as clear as the future of the nba season you know i think the fact is its in suspended animation. I dont know how Bernie Sanders can effectively go after joe biden tonight in a debate in a normal circumstance is what he would have to do being in a position hes in i dont know how he does that. I dont think the democratic primary electorate, our poll much more concerned about coronavirus than anything else so i dont know if you can accomplish much as a candidate right now any way. So i think the best way to describe the campaign is in suspended animation. Like the rest of the country. Chuck, thanks so much. Important show for you on meet the press. Chuck will be joined by a man who has become a familiar face to the response to the and we have some interesting weather to talk about for your sunday waking up to snow showers above 3,500 feet. We normally bring you the highs and lows of the week in this space. This morning we thought wed answer some of the questions many of you still have about coronavirus and what all of this dizzying news means for you and your family. Im joined by nbc news medical contributor dr. Natalie azar, a rheumatologist at Nyu Langone Medical Center here in new york. Good morning. Good morning. Im going to start with one of my own questions and that is this idea of social distancing. Weve been talking about keeping me safe and i. Now were talking about we. What are the implications of that . This changed in the last week or so, willie. The guidance has been do i go out, do i go here and it was really talking about if youre an older individual with underlying medical problems, is that safe for you. And that was because primarily we were thinking of this as this is a virus that will be transmitted if you are symptomatic and so it would be easy to tell people to stay away from someone whos coughing or sneezing if you have those susceptibilities. I think were shifting now. The idea of social distancing applies to everybody. It is a Public Health strategy to try to limit the transmission of a pathogen. In this case the coronavirus. I think youve answered the first question but ill read it to you. Katie from kansas wants to know if i dont have any symptoms, do i still need to practice social distancing . The answer is yes. Here is where i would like to hear dr. Faucis take on this now. He and experts have maintained for some time that asymptomatic transmission is typically not the driver of epidemics, which is reassuring, that if you dont have symptoms, youre not going to be spreading disease. But weve had studies that have suggested the alternate and we know from just case series that people are transmitting this when they are asymptomatic, so this social distancing, yes, willie, applies to pretty much everybody. For example, dont crowd into a bar on a saturday night . Correct. Thank you. The question from terry on instagram. He asks can i safely order takeout food during coronavirus outbreaks . So the answer to that is yes. And in fact many Public Health experts would say maybe its preferable to do takeout or delivery at this time than necessarily going to a crowded restaurant. Theres no evidence that it has affected our food supply. Weve talked about that 60plus age group quite a bit. Eileen tobin asks can people over 60 safely go to small restaurants . I think the short answer is yes, but consider your underlying medical issues, right. If you have underlying medical problems, that might not be advisable and maybe not to go when its most crowded. You go at not peak times that people would be going to restaurants. Heres a question ive heard from a lot of parents in the last couple of days. Sarah in brooklyn asks if my 3yearolds day care is closed, should i still go to the park or the playground . Experts have been advising parents to limit the numbers in the play groups to a smaller amount. To definitely encourage Outdoor Activity as opposed to playing inside where kids are touching surfaces and touching each other. Maybe the poles and not playing so much on those but doing things that involve more with kicking a ball or just sort of that kind of activity as opposed to do jungle gyms. Another one ive heard from the other end of the Demographic Group which is grandparents. Beverly asks we are in the highrisk group, older people with underlying risk factors. Should we continue to keep 3 and 5yearold great grandchildren one day a week . A fantastic question weve literally heard dozens of times. Heres the answer. Kids, while thankfully they are not the ones suffering the more severe illness when they get infected or when they get sick, we know that they are in fact carrying the virus and they can transmit to their grandparents. And this is i get this, this is very disruptive. I live in a multigenerational home. Thousands if not millions of folks in this country live in multigenerational homes and cant necessarily upend their lives. I think experts are saying step back from those facetoface visits maybe for a few weeks or months. Skyping, stay in contact, reassure the children that this is a temporary thing and keep contact with grandma and grandpa but maybe not physical contact for some time. Weve talked about prevention. Now people who actually have coronavirus. Britney asks whats the best way to treat this at home . Any fluids or overthecounter meds that can help . The recommendation for mild illness if youre selfisolating is to use fever reducers, stay rested and stay hydrated. Those are the most important things. Trouble breathing, chest pain, persistent vomiting, diarrhea, high fever, you should seek medical attention. And dont rush into the e. R. If youre feeling those early symptoms. Absolutely. Reach out to your health care provider, doctors via telephone, online. You dont want to expose other Health Care Workers and patients. Dr. Azar, great information. Thanks for being here today, appreciate it. Coming up next on sunday today we will take what we hope is a bit of a Welcome Break from our coronavirus coverage and turn to a sunday sitdown with emmy and globewinning actor sterling k. Nailed it good sunday morning. It is 6 26. We have a live look outside at s. A. P. Center. Slick roads out there in downtown san jose as the rain is coming down for the second morning in a row. Good morning, im kira klapper. Thank you for joining us. Meteorologist rob mayeda is in for vianey with a look at the micro climate forecast. We are under this weather alert. Weve seen two to three inches of rain in the mountains and san jose half an inch. The most since january and more coming down now. Well take a view on the radar. You can see the scattered showers around a cold area of low pressure. It will drop down the coast today and that will give us a band of showers like were seeing move through right now. With the cooler air aloft that is a good recipe for isolated thunder and hail at times and the air, by the way, is cold enough we have snow on mt. Hamilton near diablo. The snow levels will be dropping. Highs today in the low to mid50s and well see more showers as we get into monday and tuesday midweek. Well see things dry out a little bit. Unlike last month now quite a bit of rain and sierra snow. And just as we approach spring. Well see you at 7 00 for more. There are more coronavirus cases across the bay area now. One east bay company is playing a Critical Role in ramping up testing. Take a look, this is a commercial lab in pleasanton. The Company Received emergency approval by the u. S. Government so it will be the first to introduce commercial tests for coronavirus. The company showed us its testing machine yesterday. These instruments are very efficient, highly automated and basically you put a sample in and get the results out the other end. Theres no manual intervention, no messing with the sample once its loaded on the instrument. It can process more than 1,000 samples and results in less than 12 hours. They say they have 400,000 tests available. Small businesses across the bay area are facing uncertainty as the coronavirus has so many people staying home. Now businesses think they need help. We were in oakland yesterday and spoke with business owners. They told us its been tough as more and more people work from home and avoid going out to slow the spread of the virus. Its good for Public Health but bad for business. City and state leaders gathered yesterday to discuss options. We are hard at work. We are putting our heads together. We are rolling up our sleeves and identifying solutions. For Small Businesses we put some tax benefits into the bill last night, which we are still sorting through. As we told you yesterday morning and overnight friday house of representatives passed a coronavirus package. The senate will vote on it as early as tomorrow or tuesday. And at 6 29, come up this morning on today in the bay a possible new way to keep you safe while on b. A. R. T. The new idea so that you wont need to touch so many surfaces. I like the way that sounds. Well have that and weather coming up at 7 00. Danafarber Cancer Institute discovered the pdl1 pathway. Pdl1. They changed how the world fights cancer. What we do here at danafaber, changes lives everywhere. Everywhere. Everywhere. Everywhere. Everywhere. Get up here. If i do, i cant be responsible for what happens. Uhhuh. People going to find out who the real star is. I got a gal whos always late any time we have a date but i love her yes, i love her that is sterling k. Brown showing off the pipes as reggie from the latest season of the awardwinning Amazon Prime Video series the marvelous mrs. Maisel, a show some of you may be Binge Watching while staying in this weekend. That role is the latest in a year for brown that has included a part in the highest grossing animated movie of all time, frozen 2. The lead in the acclaimed film ways and the Fourth Season of the hit nbc series this is us where he plays the beloved randall pearson. Since it launched, this is us has been among the highest rated shows in all of television, turning brown into an emmy and golden globewinning star. But what may appear to be overnight success actually was a 13year acting grind for brown. Beginning in grad school at New York University and continuing through a series of small tv roles. Sterling and i got together here in new york last fall near his old nyu stomping grounds for a sunday sitdown. This is a good moment because years ago when you were in school, youd walk here and watch other people. Absolutely. And now everybody in this park is watching you. Isnt that a weird thing for you . Its kinda crazy. Its been kinda crazy for sterling k. Brown since the premiere three and a half years ago of the hit nbc show this is us, whose viewers watch with a box of tissues handy. Ill get can i hug you . Im like yeah, im down for the hug and we just squeeze it. Sometimes they hold on. All right. Were good. Like were good. All right. And then they let go. We are perfectly imperfect. What do you think it is about this is us that has so connected with people . I think it has because were disconnected. And now folks just feel sort of like collectively they get to enjoy the experience of this pearson family. We deal with so many different topics that people see themselves in one or all of us in varying degrees. In 2018, the 43yearold made history for his role as randall pearson, becoming the first africanamerican actor to win a golden globe for best performance in a drama series. What i appreciate so much about this thing is that i am being seen for who i am and being appreciated for who i am. Do you stop and think about that as part of your legacy or is that just too much right now . Its way too much and its way too surreal. Firsts were supposed to happen a long time ago, right . Right. Im not the dude whos at the forefront of movements, per se. Im a guy who deeply loves everything that he does. I feel ill equipped to be the first. Brown grew up in st. Louis, playing football and performing in high school plays. He studied drama at Stanford University and in 2001 earned his masters from nyu. I said, god, we spent a lot of money on this degree, right . I know theres no guarantees on things working out in any particular way. Can i please pay my bills by doing what it is that i love. If i can do that, i call it a wash. Brown paid the bills for more than a decade with guest roles on television, stints in offbroadway plays, and a seasonseason run on lifetimes army wives. Was there ever a point in those 13 years where you said to yourself, i dont know if im going to end up where i thought i was going to end up . I did. My first series regular was on an fx show called starved. I played a bulimic new york city cop who would pull over people on traffic charges, steal their food as compensation and then binge and purge. And so my mom my mom watched the pilot. I said, mom, i appreciate you watching the pilot. If you dont want to watch any more, i understand. And my mother touched my knee and she said, thank you. Like she taps out as quickly as she could. 2016 was the breakthrough year for brown. He played reallife prosecutor Christopher Darden in the series the people versus o. J. Simpson earning an emmy award for his performance. This case is a circus and the defense has made it into a circus. After o. J. It was like people saying what do you want to do . How can we be in partnership with you . And youre like me . After like just waiting for people like please, sir, may i have some more. To be able to work at what you love, thats success. This is just gravy. Like delicious gravy. I had a great biscuit, now im just sopping, im sopping and its just stupid good. And brown continues to sop. With a part in the animated blockbuster frozen 2. Soldiers, we may be getting on in years, but were still strong. A recurring role in the current season of the amazon prime hit the marvelous mrs. Maisel. They will love you or hate you and let you know their verdict immediately. And an acclaimed starring performance in last years ways in which he plays a dominating father in a family navigating heartbreak and loss. We are not afforded the luxury of being average. For brown, the themes in the film are personal. He was just a young boy when he lost his father. The day is seared into his memory. I think the whole dynamic of fathers and sons is one that resonates with me and is resonating really strong right now. My dad was 45 when he passed away, and i was 10. I remember like really specific things. Waking up that morning and going into the kitchen, and my mom being on the phone calling the paramedics and asking me to put clothes on my dad because he was naked in the bed and his body was stiff. As theyre carrying him out in the stretcher, he looks at me over the railing and he winks, just winks. They carry him out the door, last time i saw him. But i will say this about sterling brown jr. He filled me up with so much love, willie. So while the time was short, it was everything that i could have hoped for for ten years. Brown is passing on that love to his own sons, andrew and amari, with wife and fellow actor Ryan Michelle bethae. I had ten good years and i want to make sure my kids have more. My kids are 8 and 4, so just two years away. So i feel like the template for fatherhood, ive got it for the next two years, and after that im in whole new territory, right . We never had the sex talks or anything like that, so those things are going to be coming down. All right, ill just be making it up as i go along. Such a truly great guy. This is us airs tuesday nights at 9 00 8 00 central on abc with a Season Finale on march 24th. Our thanks again to the library at the Public Theater for hosting our conversation. Dont forget to subscribe to the sunday sitdown podcast to hear the fulllength interview with sterling k. Brown. You can find it on Apple Podcast or wherever you get yours. Up in marin county and the north bay the showers are coming through. It will be these bands of showers accompanied with the cool air aloft that will be a good recipe for a slight chance of isolated thunder and hail with some of the stronger showers. Highs in the low 50s. Tomorrow well see showers to start the day drier to midweek. Next on sunday today the cost of coronavirus. Nbc Senior Business correspondent Stephanie Ruhle has our sunday spotlight. As the virus called covid19 spreads, so does fear and panic, closing businesses, cancelling events and clearing store shelves. Across the United States, cities declaring a state of emergency, encouraging people to keep their distance and prepare for the worst. What would be the end . The end would be when people are getting well and there is very few new cases and life can start to resume normal. I think it could be six months, obviously it could be more. Growing concerns at home threatening americas economic health. Though markets closed up 2,000 points friday, last week a milestone, a massive selloff in stocks, ending 11 years of market gains. Officially hitting a bear market. A 20 dropoff from recent highs. All the up certainty is fueling warnings of economic ripple effects, even recession. Were going to do whatever we need to do to support hardworking americans who are impacted by this, and theres no question theres a shortterm economic issue, but we will get through this. But for some, the road to recovery will be harder than others. As governments and corporations encouraged workers to stay home, a new problem emerged. Within a day of people advising employees to work from home, we recognized that people who are paid by the hour were not going to have as much work. Nearly half of hourly workers dont have paid sick leave, so many companies, including walmart, apple and microsoft have promised to continue paying their workers even if they dont come in. If youre paid by the hour, youre much more likely to be living paycheck to paycheck, so we recognized that we could afford to take this step and we stepped up to do that. A solution that unfortunately is not realistic for many Small Businesses struggling with the same consumer dropoff. It is stressful. We are honestly more worried about whats going to happen to the business than we are about catching the virus. Adding more pressure to some already economically vulnerable populations, School Districts closing their doors. A lot of our families rely on us for not only delivering wonderful instruction but being able to provide resources, meals, counseling and so forth. If the examples of china and italy had seemed far away these last few weeks, coronavirus came home on wednesday night in the space of a single hour, with a solemn president ial address from the oval office. The breaking headline that the nba had suspended its season and news that the beloved tom hanks and his wife, rita wilson, had been diagnosed with the virus. Harry smith has our sunday closer on this moment in america. Heres whats up. We ktnow what we dont know. The person sitting next to yo p probably allergies, or maybe, just maybe they have covid19 and dont even know it. The bus ride, the subway, the taxi. The person in the restaurant who just handed you a menu, do they have it . Its hard not to think about this stuff. For a country of more than 330 million people, the numbers of confirmed cases is pretty small. Of course we dont know the real number because the means of testing is not sufficient. It is a failure, lets admit it. Still, its easy to say oddswise it cant get me. But today thats a suckers bet. In italy, a country that has shut down by the virus, there were just 157 cases on february 23rd. Six days later, there were more than 1,000. Today its more than 15,000. Its like in a movie. Sure, every country is its own petri dish, age, mobility, healthe response. And on that note, a thought. There will be plenty of time for credit or blame later. But until then, doctors, epidemiologists, researchers, you know, science people, let the science people do the talking. Just them. This, dear friends, is a time for unity, but america is that proverbial house divided. People so at odds we cannot agree on whats true. But what is true is this, the virus will not discriminate when it decides to infect you. It doesnt care who you voted for. So lets listen to the scientists, keep our distance, wash our hands. Lots of stuff is being cancelled, postponed. What sounds sometimes like an overabundance of caution will likely save lives. Costly too. Nd is inconvenient but well find the dividend is fewer sick people, fewer deaths. On that, we should all be able to agree. For sunday today, harry smith, new york. Harry, thank you very much. This week we highlight another life well lived. Believe it or not, in the 1950s, it was considered a revolutionary act for a woman to wear glasses on television. Remember, everything is better with blue bonnet on it. One day early in her career as a tv pitchwoman, joyce gordon was having trouble reading her script as she squinted into the camera, so she put on her glasses. Little did she know, theyd make her famous. Gordon was the first woman ever to wear glasses on television while appearing under her own name. She became a star while changing the image of a woman in glasses, both on tv and out in the world. Gordon received bags of fan mail and appeared in tv guide, a 1960 magazine profile dubbed her the tv girl who wears glasses. No other shortening has ch s criscos formula, with special attention against greasy taste. Gordon who grew up in chicago before moving to new york to pursue a career in entertainment appeared on the jack paar show and the price is right. She did voiceover work and dubbed American Films for audiences. She was a trail blazer off camera too. In 1966 she became the first woman ever to lead a local chapter of the Screen Actors Guild union. Gordon was married for more than 50 years to actor bernard grant, a soap opera fixture. They raised two children together. More recently, you may recognize gordons voice from a famous telephone recording she used to deliver.
