Once again, a really busy morning for us. Yeah. The one topic of conversation is the coronavirus and thats where we start. There are now more than 1,000 cases in 38 states in washington, d. C. Among the latest, three tsa workers at a california airport tested positive. In the meantime a mile wide containment zone will be created around a large cluster of cases, the largest in the country, happening in the new york city suburb new rochelle. Do they have staff on hand, enough equipment, enough protective equipment with personnel. What happens if somebody on staff, a nurse or a doctor comes down with the virus. How do they help isolate the person, back fill that person, care for all the patients. Thats what they are involved with here around the clock. Meanwhile on the wall, this is the definitive word the world is using, john hopkins global case by case counter. As you mentioned, 1,000 known cases in the United States right now. Known cases. Importantly, experts believe there are far more than 1,000 cases right now. The vast majority of people who have been sick simply havent presented to a Health Clinic or havent been tested. Meanwhile new york taking a major step towards stopping the spread of the virus. This morning, emergency measures in new york. The states governor deployed the National Guard to new rochelle, a suburb of new york city in an effort to contain a coronaVirus Outbreak there. Residents within a onemile radius required to stay in the area for a twoweek period. It is a dramatic action, but it is the largest cluster in the country. This is literally a matter of life and death. As new cases spread nationwide, Health Officials are warning all americans to be prepared. You have to start taking seriously what you can do now that if and when the infections will come, and they will come, sorry to say, sad to say, they will. Earlier President Trump appeared to contradict that, downplaying the threat. Were prepared and were doing a great job with it, and it will go away. But in Washington State where the most deaths have occurred, the governor is warning without action things could rapidly escalate. In seven or eight weeks, there could be 64,000 people affected in the state of washington if we dont somslow. Meanwhile in california, traveling by plane and by bus to military bases where they will the process expected to take days. On the campaign trail, joe biden and Bernie Sanders both canceled primary night rallies in ohio. This sunday they will square off in the first debate in the 2020 cycle without an audience. On the education front, a growing number of School Districts are closed for several weeks while many major universities are suspending inperson classes. Ben and jerrys postponing their popular free cone day for the first time in 40 years. Vice president pence said all 50 states now have test kits. By the end of the week, he said there will be 4 million tests out there. By the way, a biotech conference, a recent conference in boston, is proving to be the epicenter of the massachusetts outbreak. They have had 70 cases in massachusetts linked to conference, then people left the conference and dispersed to other states. You can see how quickly its spread after a normal every day conference. Clear officials are trying right now. A onemile containment zone in the suburb of new rochelle with the National Guard called in. Were going to talk about it with Governor Cuomo. First Morgan Radford in new rochelle for us. Good morning. Hoda, good morning. Theres a sense of fear and confusion and uncertainty in new rochelpele aops le brace for a virtual lockdown because this has now become the epicenter of the coronaVirus Outbreak. 108 confirmed cases here. Thats more than double the number of cases in new york city and the largest cluster of cases in the entire country. Thats why just a few blocks from where im standing now, they set up a containment zone. Thats an area of onemile radius where any large scale meeting places, schools, churches, synagogues, Community Centers will be shut down two weeks starting tomorrow. The number of these cases stems from interaction with one man, a lawyer in his 50s who became symptomatic last month. Then that virus very quickly spread to his friends, his family members, his colleagues at work, even people who attended his synagogue. Thats why the National Guard has been called in to clean those Surface Areas and schools and deliver food to people in the Quarantine Zone as people here in new rochelle brace for that lockdown starting tomorrow. Hoda, savannah. Morgan, thanks. Lets turn to Governor Cuomo who joins us. Governor, its good to have you with us. Good to be with you. Were talking about this situation in new rochelle. It sounds dramatic. A containment zone. What does it mean in practice . It isnt no one in, no one out, no checkpoints but the National Guard is there. Yeah. Good morning, savannah, hoda. It sounds more dramatic than it is. Lets look at the situation. We have about 108 cases in new rochelle. Just to put it in perspective, we have 36 cases in new york city. New york city is 100 times the size of new rochelle, okay . So new rochelle is the hottest spot, if you will, in the country, the most dense cluster. And as you hear from all the experts now, we have to take action. We have to do something. This is not going to stop spreading on its own. It never has. Not in china, not in korea, not in hong kong. We are going to determine our fate, and were going to have to take actions. Our action in new rochelle is just no large gatherings. People can come, people can go, theres no limitation on movement but no large gatherings because the large gatherings is where it spreads. We know that. If you have a high concentration of people, no large gatherings. Beyond new rochelle, and i know in particular new rochelle youve set up facilities to test for the virus right there, but to the larger issue of testing, this has been a persistent source of concern, are there enough tests and is there an ability in the state of new york and more broadly, if you can speak to it, to get the results of the test to labs and back in a timely manner . That is the issue. When they do the retrospective on this one, they are going to say, why did it take the United States so long to bring up the testing capacity. We knew this was happening in november and december. We watched china. China did Something Like 200,000 tests per day. South korea did about 15,000 tests per day. The United States has only done about 5,000 tests to date. The way these other countries have gotten ahead of it was you do the testing, a lot of testing, you identify the positives, isolate the positive. Im a governor, its about today, its about tomorrow. Thats just where im going. Real quickly before we have to wrap up, what is the situation now . Is it improved . Well, the federal government, i think, in large measure now is leaving it up to the states. Just take the handcuffs off me and let new york state do what new york state can do. Let the other states take their own path forward. Were going to ramp up as quickly as possible now that the federal government is giving us some leeway. Governor cuomo, i know its a busy time for you. I appreciate your time with us this morning. Were going to have a lot more ahead, including the importance and the impact of a Public Health strategy they are calling social distancing. More on that just ahead. Craig joins the table talking politics, democratic primary. Indeed. Good morning to you savannah, hoda as well. Joe biden took wins over sanders including a critical state of michigan, a state sanders won four years ago. Peter alexander has the very latest. Peter, good morning to you. Hey, craig, good morning to you. It was another dominant night for joe biden, the former Vice President extending his delegate lead with victories in four of the six states that voted tuesday. The highlight as you note is michigan that Bernie Sanders needed to blunt bidens momentum, a state sanders won by two points in 2016 but last night lost by double digits. This morning joe biden in the democratic drivers seat. Looks like were going to have another big night. Posting wins from idaho to missouri but none bigger than the top delegate prize, michigan. Were a step closer to restoring decency, dignity and honor to the white house. Thats our ultimate goal. Reporter michigan a crucial background where Bernie Sanders upset Hillary Clinton four years ago, in a state donald trump ultimately won by fewer than 11,000 votes. Biden again demonstrating his dominance among africanamerican voters. In mississippi, more than eight in ten backing him over sanders. The clear priority for democrats, defeating President Trump. A majority of voters saying its more important to pick a candidate they believe can win this fall over one that agrees with their opinions on major issues. Sanders pulling out victory in in other words, biden with his eye on the general election appealing to sanders and his supporters. I want to thank bernie but sanders and his supporters for their Tireless Energy and their passion. We share a common goal. And together well defeat donald trump. Biden also picking up an endorsement from andrew yang overnight adding to a string of endorsement from his former rivals. The math says joe is our prohibitive nominee. We need to bring the party together. We need to start working on defeating donald trump in the fall. Last nights results coming hours after this Heated Exchange went viral. Biden facetoface with a detroit auto worker on the issue of guns. Reporter the former vp, who supports banning socalled assault weapons not holding back. Take your ar 14s away. As for last night, sanders did not speak like biden cancelling a rally amid coronavirus concerns. The map just gets better for biden with voters next tuesday casting ballots in cases crucial this fall like arizona, florida, ohio as well and this morning pressure among top democratic voices is building for sanders to bow out. Savannah and hoda. Joined by former democratic senator claire mccaskill. Good morning to you. Good morning. We see what happened last night. This is a crushing disappointment for the Sanders Campaign. Is there that pressure for him to concede . Are democratic voters saying its time to wrap this up. I think the voters are saying that. This is a dominant performance. Joe biden won every county in michigan. He won back a lot of white voters in states like mine, missouri he won every county in michigan, mississippi, and missouri, every county. Sanders poured resources, won ther in 2016 and very close in missouri when you peer inside those numbers, what do the demographics tell us about the numbers . It says joe biden is really consolidating the Democratic Party right now. Listen, i dont think anybody should tell bernie to quit running but the math is unforgivable and bernie is going to have to do a gut check at some point, maybe next week and say if the goal is to defeat donald trump, its time to consolidate the Democratic Party. Is there a path for bernie after last nights results what people dont understand about the way it works, margins matter if you dominate a state, you get rewarded for it. Thats how you gain delegates. For example, in Washington State where bernie needs to pull out a victory, they are tied right now. Even if he wins, hes not going to get a lot of delegates out of it in terms of biden getting the same number of delegates. You have mississippi where biden absolutely crushed it. Those are the states coming for biden, georgia and florida, where hes going to run up the numbers and therefore even gain on bernie in terms of delegate count. But if weve learned anything in this case, senator mccaskill, things can change on a dime in politics now we have a specter of debate, a faceoff, finally a oneonone meeting sunday night between sanders and biden. I think most democrats know how the debate is going to go. Sanders is a good debater. Weve seen sanders debate over and over again. Weve seen biden debate. Thats not his strength. The other thing thats entering this race now is coronavirus voters want safety they really want somebody right now who is reassuring. I thought last night what biden did in his speech is demonstrate to the country i can be that stable, reassuring voice at a time when youre worried. Well continue to watch senator mccaskill, we appreciate it back to you guys. Lots to get to. More on coronavirus and drastic measures taken to slow its spread cities coasttocoast turning to strategy of whats called social distancing youll hear that term a lot. A desperate attempt to prevent a crisis. Its the new term on everyones mind. Social distancing. Social distancing. Social distancing. With many experts say keeping your distance could be the key to slowing down the coronavirus. If youre over the age of 60 or any age with significant underlying medical problems, its not a bad idea to reconsider going out into those crowded places the advice simple, avoid people and places where either it possible to come in contact with germs by droplets, direct contact, or on any potentially contaminated surfaces, whether it means avoiding conferences, postponing events big and small and in more and more cases closing schools. A little nervous, at least i am i think columbia is handling it in a way thats protective of all students. Feel like its best for safety of the players, safety of the franchise, safety of the league to mandate that, we all listen to it. Lets bring in nbc medical correspondent dr. John torres, good morning social distancing, unless in your line of work we probably havent heard this term before why does it work as i understand, its not about stopping the coronavirus from getting here but rather slowing it down so it doesnt get here at once. Slowing the spread so we dont get peaks at the beginning. We talk about this being respiratory illness it can go 3 to 5 feet is what you need thats hard to do with a business meeting, school, events social distancing means shutting those things down so people get a chance to get away from each other. Not a long time, a few weeks a slow growth, not rapid. If youre wondering if it works, you look back 100 years, there were two cities when the flu went around. One practiced social distancing, one did not. Tell us about the dramatic results there. The two cities, philadelphia and st. Louis. This is a definite contrast here philadelphia started getting spanish flu. Eleven days later a big parade and a week later they started practicing social distancing, a huge peak, twice as many as st. Louis. Once it started they said lets separate everybody, close down schools and events and keep away from each other. Social distancing works. Its interrupts peoples lives but its good. You have been following this closer than anyone a lot of people freaking out classes canceled, schools shutting down for ooh awhile. On any level are we overreacting at all, or is this a matter of good Public Health policy. I think were not overreacting at all. At most the overreaction on social media you hear misinformation. Its good Public Health policies we know from past histories, if we get it under control its going to come to your community, like dr. Fauci said, its going to come to your communities but make sure it comes slow. Wuhan, a lot of issues because it came early. Lets drill down on this. I read an article and its striking if your whole family is going to get the flu, you definitely dont want them to all get it at the same time where mom and dad both have it and cant take care of the kids. Is it about not having this huge spike and overwhelming hospitals and hospital equipment and all that at once. It is, about getting the huge spike, overwhelming the systems. When you get the huge spike other people get infected as well that couldnt get social distancing if you get it, using the analogy in the house, if mom and dad gets it, you can make arrangements to get the kids taken care of by somebody else so they might not get it. You have that opportunity. Whereas if you dont do that and everybody gets it at once, theres no way to take care of everybody. What constitutes social gathering. A 6 foot zone if youre going to a gathering and you cant get a 6 foot distance, especially a gathering where people might go if they are sick, they paid for something, business, concert, things you cant trust people to stay home if they are sick, thats something to avoid. One of our correspondents said they went to lunch and the waiter asked them all to separate around the table to give them that kind of distance. I think youll see more of that. I dont know how to feel about this 1 foot distance. Depends how much you trust them. I trust them. This is like family actually doctor torres, thank you so much. Up next, a today exclusive. We are back, 7 41 now with a today live exclusive. It has been less than a month since nascar driver ryan newman survived this frightening wreck on the final lap of the daytona 500. We are so happy, you guys, because we have ryan right here at our stable for his first at our table for his firs interview with that crash. First, lets take a look back at how we got here. Here comes hamlin up the outside. Crash into the wall, into the air goes newman. Its the terrifying crash that had a nation of racing fans holding its breath. Newman got turned, went up in the air. Another car slamming into ryan newman sending him flying back into the air at 190 miles an hour wrecking his number 6 car at the finish of daytona 500. Miraculously ryan escaped with a head injury but otherwise unharmed he showed this emotional photo and video just two days after the wreck of him walking out of the Medical Center Holding Hands with his young daughters since leaving the hospital, hes been fishing, or as he calls it, a little therapy. Hey, guys, i just want to thank you for all of your support and encouragement over the last couple of weeks it has been quite a challenge. He was back in racing team garage as well as visiting a racetrack over the weekend as a spectator. Feel fine. It is a remarkable recovery for newman, who as a young driver spoke to us about newly implemented safety precautions for drivers. I really feel about 50 to 70 safer than i was last year. An unbelievable three weeks for newman but now hes back on track. Ryan, were so happy that youre here. Were so happy youre sitting at that table after watching that video, i dont know how many times youve seen it, but how are you feeling this morning how do you feel today . Its still humbling to watch it and know im sitting here without a headache, which is amazing. Just a miracle on so many levels and thankful for so many people for prayers, for all the things that went into me being safer in that situation. No broken bones, nothing like that. No. There were some reports of head injuries. What did the doctors have to say about that. A bruised brain it takes time for it to heal i was knocked out. There was a point where i dont remember part of the race. Realistically i just feel so lucky. On so many levels i feel so lucky. You look at the crash, you think thats spectacular in a bad way. You look at the car afterwards, you think about all the things of what happened right for me to be sitting here. The race itself, for folks who dont follow nascar, its the super bowl of racing, the daytona 500. Here you are 190 miles per hour, last lap youre that close to winning this thing whats the last thing you remember this is my i should have won interview. I mean, its emotional, no doubt. I think about the fact that i was that close but really in the end, im really humbled by the opportunity to experience and continue my life, to be blessed by so many peoples prayers to be sitting here and hopefully making something of it enjoy life with my daughters. Youre here and so are your Guardian Angels which are clearly watching over you. Safety is something youve been working on and talking about and been a leader on on and off the track and now here you are the beneficiary of that. Its not just me. Theres a whole group at nascar thats done a great job from the tracks to safety personnel the drivers inside the cars, the cockpit, containment seats we have so many levels of things that happened in the last 20 years ive been a part of this sport that help me be able to sit here today. You were saying a minute ago when you look at the crash and think oh, my gosh, how did i walk away. When you look closer and look inside the car, what went right. What did you mean . What did go right . Where i was hit, so to speak. The cage was compromised all those welds held together. So the guys in the shop did an amazing job. All the things that happened that get me here i got hit from behind by a car going 190 miles an hour. It pushed me back but he pushed me forward his car actually hit my seat lots of things that happened that aligned the angels aligned held a really good grip with their hands. Youve been humble. Youve been such an advocate for safety theres a bar in the car called the newman bar that protects drivers specifically for folks that might be watching and wondering, why in the world after surviving Something Like this, cheating death, why would you get back in the car . Why not just retire at 42. I love it im just 42, right i love it. Its been a little painful to be out of the race car and not be doing what ive done for years i started racing at 4 1 2yearsold. Lastly, what did you tell your girls i know that must have been scary because they were at the track when it happened. Daddy is all right. Really thats i dont they seem to be completely fine with the fact that im still daddy. I think it would be totally different if Something Else woul divot if Something Else would have happened. But im 100 who i was, which they were good with, so im fine. When are you back in that car . I dont know. Were working on it. As soon as i possibly can. Thank you for coming to see us. Thank you for having me. Were glad to have you here thank you so much. Well send it over to al to get a check of the weather hey, guys, thank you so much. The World Meteorological organization, u. N. , see our climate continuing to change last year temperatures, second warmest year ever on record. The last five years are the warmest five years on record our oceans, global sea levels reached their highest levels on record warmest oceans in recorded history. That means stronger storms, more storms, heavier rains and sea ice for the arctic record antarctic warmth that means all that ice melting goes into higher sea level records. That has had global impacts not just around the world but around our country as well. Arctic heat and fires, above average fire activity for alaska, siberia. Extreme rainfall, wettest 12month period on record. Dorian slowest moving cat 5 storm. Record european heat, seven countries. Of course australias wildfires hottest and driest on record our climate is changing. Good morning. Im meteorologist kari hall. Were seeing the storm system thats been over Southern California still bringing parts of the south bay unsettled weather so we will still have a slight chance of rain mostly south from san jose on southward today. The heavier rain across Southern California and parts of the central coast, so were still going to have a slight chance of rain for the south bay. Today we see a chance of a spot shower right over morgan hill at about 5 00 this afternoon into the evening and then most of the rest of the bay area enjoying a mostly sunny sky and some warm weather. Were reaching up to 72 degrees today. Even warmer tomorrow as we reach the peak of our temperatures and also the sunshine. Going into the weekend a cold front will be moving in bringing our high temperatures into the low 50s as we get rounds of rain coming in. This may taper off to light snow across bay area peaks and highs only reaching the mid50s. Now lets head over to mike for an update on the commute. The Speed Sensors are improving. New york state called out the National Guard to slow the coronaVirus Outbreak tom costello is on top of that the other three things to watch from baltimore inside the Incident Command Center at Johns Hopkins hospital tom, good morning. Reporter good morning to you. They are tracking every days not only around the world but in the United States and providing all that data to Health Officials nationwide but new york right now really is the focal point of attention on the east coast and efforts to contain the virus after the governor called in the National Guard into new rochelle to contain that area. They have 108 cases of coronavirus in new rochelle, a cluster they now say they need to contain the governor calls that a matter of life and death. Also, were watching the situation in california where that princess cruise ship is now slowly, slowly disembarking. Passengers, the grand princess cruise ship, coming off and being taken by bus and plane to military bases across the country where they will be quarantined up to 14 days. Just getting off the ship itself is a matter of days. Back here live at Johns Hopkins university, they track every single case around the world and their data is used by Health Experts around the world at this very minute they have 1,039 known cases in the United States and 29 deaths however, these experts are quick to point out, there is probably a far higher number at play here, 1,000 cases simply represents the number of people who have gone in and gotten tested it doesnt count all the people who stayed at home maybe they werent tested when they went to the Doctors Office and the experts believe the number is far, far higher and they simply dont know how many real cases are out there right now across the country guys, back to you. Big issue tom costello, thank you very much. To politics and joe bidens decisive primary victories last night in michigan and several other states as well nbc correspondent Peter Alexander joins us with three things to watch in politics. Hey, peter. Announcer this is an nbc news special report. Heres chris jansing. Good day, everyone. Were coming on the air with breaking news. Harvey weinstein, once one of the most powerful men in hollywood to face sentencing on charges of rape and criminal sexual act in the first firstdegree. Lets go to the courthouse where stephanie is standing by. The big question today was how stiff would this sentence be and there was a powerful message today sent by the judge, stephanie. There certainly was. This is a very severe sentence thrown at Harvey Weinstein. Hes now facing 20 years in prison for the first degree sexual act charge and another three years in prison for the thirddegree rape. Theyre to be served consecutively which is a surprise here. Often these charges are served concurrently. Now hes saying consecutively which means he is facing 23 years in prison. He will also be put on the sex registry. The judge telling saying this may be his first conviction, but its not Harvey Weinsteins first offense. We heard from Harvey Weinstein who stood up and showed very little remorse in the comments he made. He said he had remorse for the women who accused him of these crimes but he went on to say he was the first in the me too movement and he fears it led to thousands of men in his words not getting due process, saying that he basically making the leap that he did not get due process himself in this situation. The judge showing no mercy here. This is a to have sentence. More than many people had predicted chris. Ari melber joins us on the phone. We knew this judge was tough. We knew there was a possibility of a tough sentence, but as stephanie just said, not a lot of people thought it would come this close to the maximum. Chris, this is an extraordinarily hard sentence. One could call it unusual by the traditional and many would say antiquated standards on how quote, unquote first time offenders are dealt with. This is a complete rebuke obviously of mr. Weinstein as a convicted felony and an embrace of the prosecutors arguments that this was a very serious case that should get nearly the maximum. Thank you so much. Harvey weinstein sentenced to 23 years. Well continue to have coverage on msnbc. Now back to our programming. But of course thousands of people, according to the union, have come into contact with those three tsa employees who have the coronavirus so perhaps the best advice now is if you travel through san jose in the last week or two to call your state Health Department to find out what you should do. Cancel a trip they h already booked, should they guys. Kerry, for folks out there who might be worried about traveling, possibly even having to cancel a trip they have already booked, should they buy travel insurance you can buy travel insurance but its a little tricky congress is pointing out here that if you guy travel insurance and you recognize that that travel insurance is for a situation that developed that you were unknowingly going to run into then youd be covered coronavirus has been out there for a while, so you have to look very closely and get a policy that says cancel at any cost cancel for any reason. The problem is its really hard to get that insurance because of coronavirus. So again, cancel for any reason. Thats the fine print you have to look at. Kerry sanders at Orlando International airport. A quick look at whats going on around the country. Heavy rain through the southwest, warmth through the country, severe storms firing up in the western Mississippi River valley sunshine up and down the east good morning, weve been wanting a lot of the rainfall to our south, but we will have a slight chance of rain. Some of the models have rain an morgan hill this afternoon. Were looking at highs in the low 70s today. It will also be in the low 70s into the end of the week, but the weekend is when the rain arrives and our temperatures drop off with highs only in the lower 50s. And thais your latest weather. Craig. All right this is National Sleep Awareness Week and were marketing it with sleep better today. This morning the battle over the bedroom thermostat youre recused from this because it involves you is there science to support the ideal sleeping temperature asking for a friend, craig and his wife lindsay they slept on it were not doing an interview like this. Uhuh. Im glad were doing the story because its something couples need to talk about, because its too damn hot. Its too damn hot. Every bedroom in america, especially mine. Its true. You can use that that was good stuff. My wife lindsay and i have been married for nine blissful years, but theres an unspoken tension, and its time to put it to rest. We dont really discuss it. I get up and turn the fan off. Theres not a lot of talking about the temperature. Passiveaggressive. Its not passive aggressive its not im executing. Its intentional. For nine years ive been living in this quiet misery. Are you serious sure. Thats actually why were doing the story. This is me stabling an intervention theres nothing like going to bed comfortable, like this is nice, 68 you wake up and youre like, oh, im in a jungle. Its 75 degrees. Whats wrong with our thermostat so do experts recommend a sleeping temperature. If i was pushed to choose one or the other, id err going on the colder than warmer. She says your core body temperature needs to drop for you to fall asleep. When our core body temperature drops melatonin increases which is needed for us to drift into sleep as well. But im a good sport and i agree to sleep all night at lindsays temperature. Set the thing. Tonight is my my happy temp so were going to put it on 74 actually i mean, look, thats a little bit warmer. Ill wake you up to see how you like it. Please dont. Feels fine. You just told america about your back sweat. Thats what you want to do no, its not what i want to do i dont know but we digress and turn back to our expert. I would counsel them about finding an appropriate range, happy medium for both of them. Sounds like what im hearing from the expert, 67, 68 is the ideal temperature for a bedroom to get good sleep, thats what im hearing. Im hearing 69 or 70. This has been revealing ive been wondering for the last few years why i havent been getting good sleep its obvious, i have to get a new family. Good luck with that in the meantime well keep it at 70 degrees. Wow im pleased to report since we shot that story weve been sleeping with the temperature around 68, 69. Coming up next, why are more women struggling with alcohol, yet fewer are seeking treatment. Maria shriver is here and shes going to share some of their stories but first this is welcome back we take a look at the number of women in this country reporting binge drinking and trouble with alcohol. Whats behind the trend. Maria shriver is here this morning. Thanks, hoda. Experts are calling this a growing health crisis. We went to the Betty Ford Center in california to speak with women in recovery. A rare and candid look into why this is happening for so many women. They are business executives. I would start my day by filling my coffee cup with chardonnay. High school students. I started drinking heavily when i was 16 years old. Olympic athletes. That was the first time i clearly remember using alcohol to numb and to not feel. Carrie, sharon and sophie are all in recovery for alcohol addiction. Today the number of women drinking too much is skyrocketing one out of ten women report binge drinking three times a month. Alcoholrelated er visits up 87 , alcoholrelated deaths up 85 . Being a woman with an alcohol problem is easy to cover up. Carrie first appeared on our show as a gold medal olympic swimmer. Later she married and became a mom. Drinking was a huge part of our social life, family experience, raising kids with friends. Its become very susceptible, acceptable. Mommy on the hip, wine on the lip. There were times i scared my kids a lot i drank and drove with my kids in the car so one of the reasons for me not asking for help sooner was out of fear. I was afraid to admit what would my life be like without alcohol. How would i socialize, how would i be in these girl groups, hang out with my girlfriends, do my life without drinking. As ceo of a firm, sharon was also terrified to seek treatment. I think its hard for high functioning, high performing women to ask for help. Drinking became a tool for me to alleviate the stress that was associated with this picture perfect facebook life. My drinking progressed to where i would have blackouts constantly i felt like i was all alone. I had no idea there were other women struggling like i was. Sophies struggle began in high school. Everywhere i went, i had a water bottle full of vodka i would take that to school. Nobody knew. I think part of me wanting to fit in and be the popular girl was to keep up with the boys and be known as the girl who could drink more than the other boys were drinking at my school i was always so ashamed to actually put up my hand and say, hey, im struggling. My solution was to go and drink. That really just put me into a downward spiral of shame i think my message today to any woma struggling out there, dont wait for it to get worse and worse and worse. You will get through this. There is light at the end of the tunnel all right with maria lets bring in nbc medical contributor dr. Natalie azar the question, people dont seekt its a crisis or they are afraid to alcohol manifests in women differently of all ages. So many find themselves mothering, taking care of aging parents, working, and they dont even see who would do their job if they were to go into recovery and ask for help theres a problem in asking for help and admitting that you cant have it all and do it all because theres a lot of pride with that and thinking who is going to do all this if i go away. I know a lot of women who say i dont have a problem i like to have drinks after work i like to hang out with friends. I like to have my mommy juice. How do you know if you have a problem.
