But would you do it for an xray or surgery that a doctor ordered . Well, a bay area mom says she has come up with a way to help you do exactly that. Consumer investigator chris chmura is here to explain. Shopping for xrays. Thats a whole new concept. Got to do it, though. You can see why here. It means money. More families than ever have high deductible Health Insurance. Almost half of americans. 43 according to the cdc. That means you got to spend lots of money out of pocket first before your insurance pays the first penny. If thats you, you might be able to save some cash by leaving that insurance card in your wallet. An unexpectedly high hospital bill gave Joanne Rodriguez craig sticker shock. We got an 800 bill. And i had actually called in to the hospital and they told me oh, yeah, if you had paid cash, it would have been 30 less. Reporter she had no idea she could have paid less. She was frustrated but also motived to spread the word to others. Joanne used her background as a Data Scientist to create a website called clinic price check. It lets you search prices from patients bills, hospital, and the government. If you shop around, its possible that you can get a much better rate than what your insurer is offering you, especially if you consider paying cash. Reporter can you really just sidestep your Health Insurance if you find a lower price . The California Department of managed health care tells us yes, you can. But a rep for the California Hospital Association says while a hospital could technically agree to provide the patient with a socalled cash price for a service, that just doesnt happen very often. In my experience, it happens a lot. Reporter lisa barry blackstock is a patient advocate. She helps people navigate and negotiate billing disputes. Lisa recommends that anyone who is scheduling medical care should check the cash price, particularly if you have a high deductible with your Health Insurance. All you have to do is ask. Who may i speak with that i can explore my cash Payment Options with. They know exactly what youre talking about. They will not deny it. They wont discourage it. Reporter the Hospital Association tells us hospitals are required to give you a good faith estimate. Some hospitals have posted price calculators on our website. So we used one for a Large Hospital Group in the bay area. It took a little digging and several clicks, but eventually we found dozens of procedures where the average price price was 10 less than the price insurance had negotiated. A cardiac stress test was 307 less if you pay yourself. A lower back mri was 168 cheaper without insurance. But its important to remember that if you bypass your Health Insurance, you wont be chipping away at your annual deductible, which could come back the bite you later. So before you decide whether to use your insurance, weigh your medical expenses for the entire year. I want people to shop for health care, and i want people to save money. Reporter as for joanne, she hopes the data from clinic price check drives change in medical billing. I want to get price restriction. I want everybody to pay the same rates. Everyone we spoke with for the story said its essential you do your Price Research before you have a procedure done. That means talking with your Insurance Company and the hospital well in advance. And ideally, get any commitments they make in writing. Always in writing. We never even knew it was possibility to do this. Neither did we, until we found out about this and decided lets check it out. Every procedure that we researched had a cheaper cash price. Not one of the cash prices was higher. The insurance was always more experience. Thank you, chris. If you have a medical billing complaint for chris our investigative team, head to nbcbayarea. And you can see its all about this area of high pressure. Weve been telling you about it for weeks. Its what has kept us so dry now in february. No rainfall recorded on track for the driest february in San Francisco since 1864. So definitely unusual. And weve had a few records. And i think tomorrow is going to be one more day of that before we get the changes in here. So for the morning forecast, its simple. Its easy to go. Make sure you have the sunglasses. Might need a jacket for just the first part of the morning if youre up around 6 00 or 7 00. Well start with 47 in the trivalley. Peninsula 49. South bay at 50. A little milder overall with 47 in the east bay. San francisco 49. And the north bay at 46. So here we go again tomorrow. Numbers up another degree or two. And thats going to put us here with more 80s in the south bay. 81 gilroy. 80 in downtown san jose. 70 at los gatos that continues for the east bay. Notice a lot of the usual suspects here from antioch to concord, in the low 80s. Even over to oakland, 76 degrees. Thats because we have a dryer wind octuplet of the northeast. Its not very strong, but that northeasterly wind is a warming wind. And thats also why hayward will be up to 76. The peninsula has 75 in san mateo down to palo alto. 78 San Francisco. 70s in the embarcadero and the mission. You go closer to the coastline. A little bit of an ocean breeze here will have us at 68. And right across the north bay, 79 in santa rosa. Plenty of 70s here, upper 70s from novato back into napa. So tomorrow the last day like this. Then once we hit friday, well start to see some changes that would continue into the weekend. Now the first change youre going to notice is by fridays forecast we get widespread cloud cover moving in. So not nearly as sunny as we hit your friday forecast. Thats going to be the first thing that once we hit the weekend, the system that is going to bring the loud cover will start to move down closer to the bay area. I think the bigger things well notice out of this is a major temperature drop, down 15 to 20 degrees this weekend, and also that wind picking up. With that wind, if you have had allergies lately, its going to get a lot worse this weekend. I wanted to show you whats blooming right now. Junip juniper, cypress, cedar and pine. It could be a really rough weekend for your if you have asthma, any kind of respiratory problems, and you are allergic. Just kind of start thinking about that. And youll see on my extended forecast, there is that temperature drop. From 72 on thursday to 55 on sunday. Only at 50 chance here of a shower. But winds 20 to about 45 miles per hour. And then sunshine as we move into the early part of next week. Inland valleys from that 80 and records tomorrow down to 59. So there is that change for you. Might even need a jacket all day long on sundays forecast. And well start to warm up as we head through the mid part of next week. Okay. Got you ready on that forecast. Lets take you out to some baseball. Weve heard about our spring training game right here on nbc bay area. At 6 00 p. M. On friday, 70 to start. A little bit of cloud cover. 60s through the game. Giants do well in this kind of weather. We should be in scottsdale watching that game. That would be nice. Thanks, jeff.
