A man was killed after he chased two people who stole his laptop from an oakland starbucks in the montclair neighborhood. The court case against the two suspects are just beginning, as are attempts to help the family heal from the victims loss. Reporter theres a phrase we use in tv news a lot, probably overuse it, to describe flours, candles, and notes left at the scene of an accident or a crime. Makeshift memorial. Makeshift meaning its temporary. But for two women in montclair, what they saw outside their local starbucks, they didnt want that to be temporary. The signs of trauma, at least the visible ones, are gone from montclair now. No crime scene tape on the street. Business as usual at the starbucks on mountain boulevard. Its the pain you cant see, though, that still lingers. This really uncomfortable sadness that was overwhelming. Heartfelt messages. Reporter in the end, the book sue handed to the parents was more than 70 pages. We didnt say anything. I just presented it to them. And they opened the ribbon and just touched the photo of their son on the first page. And then started looking at some of the pictures. Reporter so what sue and joanne hope, obviously, for this family is that they take this back home with them and can open it and realize, although many of these people, most of these people, didnt know their son, the community is intensely sorry about what happened and hopefully it gives them some comfort. Very nice gesture. Very comforting for the family. Thanks, garvin. Lets turn our attention to chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. What didnt we have, jeff . She was asked whether big tech executives like Mark Zuckerberg have too much power.
