Next we go live to washington to talk with chuck todd and get a preview of this weeks meet the press. Plus a mad rush to get Holiday Shopping done and why waiting until the last minute to shop might work in your wallets favor. Mike bloombergs never been afraid of tough fights, the ones that make a true difference in peoples lives. And mikes won them, which is important right this minute, because if he could beat americas biggest gun lobby, helping pass background check laws and defeat nra backed politicians across this country, beat big coal, helping shut down hundreds of polluting plants and beat big tobacco, helping pass laws to save the next generation from addiction. All against big odds you can beat him. Im Mike Bloomberg and i approve this message. The vulnerable members of congress that are looking at vulnerability constantly . I think in the short term it looks like its playing out the way almost all polarized political events play out in our politics, there isnt a special way that people are treating impeachment so far but i would say this, is remember how the politics of iraq changed. The iraq war vote, politics of it was one way when the vote happened, and then it turned quite sharply a few years later. So i do believe these impeachment votes, be them the House Democratic side or the Senate Republican side, are votes that will live a long time, and how they may play in 20 may be different than how they play in 22 and 24. I think its one of those things that as we learn more facts that will influence how impeachment is perceived. Chuck, Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she wont send those two articles to Senate Republican leader mcconnell until he sets the trial rules. How much of the strategy is an effort to get witnesses included and could it backfire on pelosi and the democrats downstream . I think there is some risk to this but what is interesting is every democrat ive talked to about it says no, this is just a temporary thing, helping Chuck Schumer get leverage with mcconnell and the other thing democrats will say, its about making sure people know its mcconnell trying to hold things up and they want to try to make mcconnell being the grim reaper of legislation a little more of a focal point so i think this is somewhat tactical, and thats where theres risk here, larry. I think the longer they hold them, the more it looks like a political tactic. Any time process has been the lead of impeachment, thats been advantage republican and any time the substance has been the lead of impeachment its been advantage democrat. Thats the danger here for pelosi, this is about process and tactics, which sort of moves the spotlight off of what the president actually did. Real quick, chuck, how long do you think its going to go . . Whats your gut . I think this trial will be a little longer than you think. I think once it starts a lot of these decisions will be made by Senate Roll Call votes. The point is, this is an unusual process and it could take weeks. Not days. Changing topics, chuck, historically the Iowa Caucuses have been anything but predictable. From last weeks democratic president ial debate could it be that minnesota senator Amy Klobuchar is emerging as a top tier candidate or for that matter is there anyone else you see gaining traction . Well, i would say this. Iowas clearly fluid. Buttigieg is clearly ahead. You didnt need a poll to tell you that, you have to watch the democratic debate. You see the national numbers, joe bid sanders ahead but all the focus was on buttigieg, hes ahead in iowa. Sanders hit him, warren hit him, klobuchar hit him. Hes the guy theyre chasing and they need iowa in order to boost themselves in the other states. Look, the december leader in the Iowa Caucuses, history shows rarely does win, when the caucuses are held a month later. Could Amy Klobuchar being a neighboring senator, her and cory booker have done, have put a focus on iowa in more so than any other state, so if any of them are going to see all of the seeds they planted come to fruition it would be one of those two. I think that is possible. I think its also possible that all of a sudden joe bidens solid debate performance makes him the viable moderate in this lane and the other thing is, our own nders i think we peril. Not only is he fully recovered politically from the heart attack, some of the swing vote in the 2020 election, those undecided voters find bernie more appealing in some ways than biden. Some democrats have to contemplate. Theyve got the money, too, right . He continues to raise the money. He is a constant money raiser. Yes. All right, chuck. Thank you very much. Be sure to join chuck for this mornings meet the press, with an exclusive interview with mark short, chief of staff to Vice President mike pence and interview with senator cory booker. Meet the press starts at 8 00 a. M. , right after this newscast. Between now and then, larry will be back in about 40 minutes. What are we going to talk about . We have more ahead on today in the bay. Coming up, the case of political gamesmanship, analyst Larry Gerston rejoins us live to break down Speaker Nancy Pelosis strategy, when it comes to those two articles of impeachment. Thats next. This week the house of representatives voted to impeach President Trump. Nancy pelosi is refusing to send articles to the senate until Mitch Mcconnell announces the rules for the trial. Blustering bluff or brilliant stroke . It is political chess so we turn to political analyst Larry Gerston. Please, doctor, decode the game board. You know, beyond this gamesmanship youre talking about, this is really a serious deal. Its about more than a question about the rules of the impeachment trial, which are established as you said by the senate in advance of the event, but the real issue here has to do with witnesses. Speaker pelosi and the democrats want to be able to summon favorable witnesses to explain and to testify under oath. Majority leader mcconnell wants to have a slimmed down version of a trial of witnesses to get past this impeachment mess as soon as possible. By the way if mcconnell allows witnesses to testify, they can be subpoenaed by a simple majority of the senate, not the twothirds needed for conviction. That means as few as four republicans could join the 47 democrats to subpoena witnesses to appear again, mcconnell doesnt want to get to that spot. Two questions quick. In previous impeachment trials, have there been witnesses . Yes. And so in this case, whats wrong with them . Weve only had two trials in the past its not a long history. Every single impeachment trial has its own set of rules. In this case there strategy saying no thanks to the witnesses . Well, it is for the president. Citing executive privilege, President Trump refused to allow mick mulvaney, former National Security adviser john bolton and others to testify, thereby making it difficult for the house to do its job. That barrier is the basis of the second impeachment article, obstruction of congress. Two can play at the same game. Some republicans in the house want mcconnell to call hunter biden and former Vice President joe biden to underscore their claim they participated in the ukrainian corruption that caused President Trump to withhold military aid. That claim to be clear has been debunked by american investigators but the fact is its part of the republican narrative. So we have this struggle in the legislative branch and it involves the executive branch. Where does the chief uo execut sit . Where is President Trump in this legislative branch struggle . Trump is aligned with pelosi. You dont see that often, trust me, when it comes to witnesses. Although his list would be very different than hers. He wants a lengthy trial. He wants to include numerous witnesses such as the bidens, who trump believes would exonerate the president. So for the moment at least, mcconnell is squeezed between pelosi and trump, chainel bedfellows as we might call it. Lets talk about the most important constituent, where does the public stand on this . That say good question and gives us surprise. We know this much, a poll conducted by the Washington Post just last week finds the public overwhelmingly in favor of members of the Trump Administration, the ones that nancy pelosi wants, to testify in the senate trial by a whopping margin of 71 to 22 , and in that same poll, chris, 64 republicans, yes, republicans want Trump Administration witnesses to testify. There have been no polls released on the president s demand for his witnesses and several republican senators in the swing states who feel jeopardized are pushing for an early trial irrespective of whether witnesses are included. Lets get it done. How long have you been doing this . A long time, 40 years, thats all. So your expert prediction, how long is it going to go . What do you think . Theres no doubt over time there will be pressure on nancy pelosi, probably in the next three or four days, to be blunt, and mcconnell for him, too, to reach some kind of compromise, but no mistake, make no mistake about it, no this is not just a simple fight over unimportant details. The senate established rules for the impeachment trial will have a Significant Impact on what comes out of it, and thats the real reason that pelosi is playing this card.
