Bob redell joins us outside San Jose City hall how this may better protect renters out there. Bob. Reporter laura and scott, later today at city hall behind me, theyre going to decide whether or not to approve new fines for landlords who operate within the city limits much. This is to encourage the Property Owners to follow the law when it comes to how they treat their tenants. Landlords are required to provide a legitimate reason for not renewing a tenants lease. The city is considering a fine of at least 500 for those landlords who dont follow that socalled just cause eviction rule. Thats one of the fines that theyre considering. Some landlords say the new fines under consideration would create a financial burden for them and they believe the city should be focusing on the affordability crisis. Not them. The San Francisco supervisors rules Committee Approved new protections for them. Currently they can evict them without cause unless the building is more than 40 years old. The new law that needs full board approval would extend no cause eviction protection to renters in any building regardless of the buildings age from the moment they sign the lease. Reflect the moment that were in, which is a true affordability crisis. Its not about supply. Its not about what we build, when we build it. Its about can working class people stay here in San Francisco and be able to survive. This is a step in that direction. We have a strong system headed our way by the end of the week. Thursday is really our only completely dry day here. Were going to see the rain approaching going into friday. Raining off and on on saturday and then it will dry out again on sunday. It looks like this could be a significant storm system once again. Thats can great news, too. It looks like the state responded to all those complaints that we heard about, and now new leadership and staffing has really sped up the process at the dmv. The Sacramento Bee reports that the state set a goal of cutting wait times for those without appointments, walkins to 45 minutes and those are appointments to 15 minutes. The bee found that throughout sacramenton large part the dmv met that goal. In the bay area and los angeles, wait times hovered around 20 minutes, at times 58 minutes in the l. A. Area. According to the examiner, San Francisco prosecutors will decide whether to retry the undocumented immigrants who shot and killed kate steinle. Hes due back in court today. Jurors acquitted him on all charges except being a felon in possession of a firearm after his attorneys argued that he shot steinle on accident. The da can either seek to dismiss the case or hold a new trial for illegal gun possession. Garcia zarate is currently in custody awaiting a separate trial in federal court. Investigators say the officer stepped in to help a woman who approached a group of young people to ask for her phone back. She thought they had stolen it. This happened in emeryville. New this morning, four recently fired google workers are suing the tech giant. You may recall the story from last week. The terminated employees are filing an unfair labor practices claim against google. Faulty maintenance by pg e and the failure to inspect transmission lines are reportedly being cited for the deadliest fire in california history. More than 80 people died last year when the camp fire roared through butte county. State regulators issued a new report that says crews last performed close inspections on the power line that failed in 2001. They say they would have spotted a worn hook that would have releasing a new report outlining Sexual Harassment complaints and assaults on campus. It reveals Campus Police responded to nearly 280 incidents throughout the year. Thats up more than 30 from last year. Also according to the report, the university removed several employees and expelled one student due to misconduct. Commuters will be able to sound off on a new hov toll lanes coming to one of the busiest traffic corridors. Thats interstate 880 from oakland to fremont. The new southbound lanes will cover 25 miles between heg en berger and Dixon Landing. Northbound lanes will run between Dixon Landing and lewelling. They take effect next summer. Like other hov lanes, toll costs will be based on traffic levels. All drivers will be required to have fastrak transponders. Theyre looking at scaleddown tolls for twoperson car tolls. Three or more would be free. Also at the hearing tonight, the mtc will discuss updating tolling rules for existing express lanes on 680. This is the first of two Public Meetings before a final vote in january. 6 44 right now. Talk about a brash robbery. Police are expected to say more today about a very bold jewelry heist. It was a smash and grab all caught on camera. Look at that. Thieves yesterday morning smashed a stolen truck into the marcel Jewelry Store on main street in los altos. Yesterday the representative told a San Diego Television station why he will no longer fight the charges. Thats when i looked up and saw that the 50foot ash tree was now on my roof and brought down with it 35,000 blue lights. That was a lot of work lost. The tree fell on top of the display. Volunteers quickly worked to save as many lights as they could. Deacon dave says every light is dedicated as a prayer to finding cures for cancer and als. Still have that pile of blue lights there. Have you ever gotten the lights out of the box and said, you know what, lets get new lights . Light ball. Just plug it in. Hangs there. The decorations are hopefully up. If not, maybe you have a chance today. Today is your day. We will only see a few breaks from the rain. Over the weekend, the decorations were being blown around. We dont have the high winds today. Thats still going to keep it soggy as you head out the door this morning. Looking at the rest of the bay area, still a chance of those showers moving into the north bay. Then partly cloudy skies. But the Atmospheric River and some of the heavier rain has pushed to the south. Lets talk about how much rain that brought over the weekend. Take a look at the rainfall totals. That was just since saturday. The Santa Cruz Mountains had over 8. 5 inches of rain. Then check out kentfield. We have 7. 5 inches of rain. Santa rosa getting 5. 25. We had lesser amounts of rain. A little over half of an inch of rain while the sierra picked up kirkwood, 7. 25 feet of snow in seven days. It was really impressive to see all those snowfall totals and theres more on the way. If youre going there this weekend, plan ahead. Were going to start to see the snow falling on friday, continuing into saturday. Were looking at another 2 to 3 feet there. Were going to see the rain returning back to the bay area by this time tomorrow morning. Starting with the south bay and spreading northward as we go into the afternoon. It doesnt look like much of the areas north of the Golden Gate Bridge. Well see a lot of it before it moves out. This will be a weaker storm system compared to what well see on friday. As it rolls in, its going to tap into once again that deep tropical moisture and bring us higher rainfall totals from friday into saturday. It does look to clear out by sunday. They could consider new penalties, one proposal includes fines for evicting tenants without cause. The fines would start at 500. Some landlords say the new fines would create a financial burden on them. Yesterday in the city, San Franciscos supervisors rules Committee Approved new protections for renters. A new law would extend no cause eviction protection for renters in any building regardless of age from the moment they signed the lease. Right now, President Trump is in london attending a nato summit. Earlier this morning, he met with nato secretary general. Right now hes meeting with french president Emmanuel Macron who he took aim at earlier when he called out the french leader for suggesting nato is experiencing brain death.
