Our Investigative Team looks at a former pg e employee hired to look for problems who then was shown the door after he found some problems. Plus the reason that toll cheaters are rapidly fading away on bay area bridges and the dramatic amount of money thats being saved. Im chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. Rain, its off to the south. Well show what you this brings our forecast tomorrow. My new update in about 8 minutes. More trouble for pg e. We have uncovered documents that show pg e did not act to prevent a disaster. Disaster that one of its own officials predicted the same year that the san bruno gas line exploded. Investigative reporter Jaxon Van Derbeken has the exclusive story. Almost everything is broken, overbroad, assessment, need to triage. Reporter in this civil deposition, ed describes what he found when he joined pg e as an outsider from the telecommunications industry. He was soon tasked to find where the utility was most vulnerable to a catastrophe. One nightmare scenario he told top executives about was an aged gas line exploding in a highly populated area. Just two months later, in september 2010, one of those old pipelines blew up in san bruno. Killing eight people and leveling a neighborhood. Salas soon left the company telling top executives he was being scapegoated for identifying threats and for making strong recommendations on how they can and should be addressed. Were you a disgruntled employee when you wrote this letter . I was a frustrated employee when i wrote that letter. Reporter but those executives soon also left, leaving others to inherit a second nightmare scenario salas had warned of. Old high voltage transmission wires sparking wildfires. The danger, he said in this document, was from aged equipment that pg e had not taken timely action to replace. Eight years later, a worn hook snapped on a tower the company said it hadnt climbed to inspect in at least a decade. Starting the worst wildfire in date history, the camp fire. It was a terrible risk. Reporter robert kagan is a retired regulatory attorney for the state Public Utilities commission. They should have heeded their own warning and they did not. Reporter one executive there at the time of salass warning, geisha williams stayed on. It was one of our biggest risks. Reporter that was her assessment of the wildfire i. During her continue youre as head of the company, documents show it only called for minimum required maintenance and didnt beef up inspections for its oldest, most atrisk electrical towers. Kagan says hes convinced the camp fire could have been avoided if pg e had heeded all the warning bells about safety. And their failure to hear those bells . It cost the people of paradise 85 lives. Reporter if pg e recently told the federal judge that despite age, its transmission lines accounted for just a tiny fraction of wildfires in the years before the camp fire disaster. And although it did do some climbing inspections of its towers before the fire, the checks did not include the structure blamed for the calamity. Jaxon van derbeken, nbc bay area news. Now, just minutes ago, pg e sent us a written statement. It says, in part, the age of equipment is just one factor pg e uses to prioritize to repair and replacement of transmission assets. While there has been a dramatic drop in toll evaders over bay area bridges in the past decade, a Million Dollars was reportedly lost a month to drivers not paying tolls on local bridges. That number reduced by 75 . In fact, in may, 250,000 was lost. The main reason for the drop, new cars now have temporary plates, so drivers can be identified. Tolls will increase, by the way, by another dollar in 2022, and then again in 2025. Its an attempt to prevent a disastrous situation. A major Fire Prevention project began near los gatos today. Cal fire is working on a 6 1 2 mile fire break along highway 17 from los gatos to the summit. The idea is to create an escape route in the event of fire evacuations and to stop any potential fire from reaching the roadway. Its especially needed after the 2016 loma fire. That scorched more than 4,000 acres and destroyed 12 homes. Look at paradise and what happened up there, and really and truly, at the end of the day, their problem is because nobody has cleared the woods upped there in 50, 75 years. And we have the same problem here. The evacuation routes are paramount. The project will take several months in sections of highway 17 may have to be shutdown while some of the work is being done. The world is protesting as the amazon rain forest continues to burn. Outrage growing over brazils reaction, this is whats left in one of the areas that burned. The fire set for the purpose of clearing out the land for farming. It is a primary source of renewing oxygen for the entire planet. Without that lush plant life, weather patterns will be impacted across the globe including here in the u. S. Sat to see that. Jeff ranieri is here to talk about our hot weather that could lead to fire concern around here as well. Fire danger will be up as we continue through tomorrow with some of these hot temperatures. Were going to pinpoint that here coming up later on this hour. But i do want to focus in on the temperatures as we hit tomorrow. Still going to be hot back here for the inland valleys. Up to 98 in antioch, 97 in concord. Morgan hill 95. San jose 92. To oakland and San Francisco, it will be in the 70s. Going to Half Moon Bay a nice cool refreshing 66 degrees. Right now at 6 30, a smashandgrab robbery that set off a panic at the great mall in milpitas last night. Just into our newsroom, these pictures of the suspects. But was this the only Shopping Mall in their sights . The crash of the glass cases in milpitas was so loud, many people thought gunshots, and that sent people scrambling. Heres another look at the suspects all caught on surveillance cameras and a car as well. The smashandgrab may be tied to a similar one just a few hours earlier in modesto. Nbc bay areas Marianne Favro is at the great mall with these details for us. Marianne. Reporter raj, the connection between these two crimes is both stores hit share the same name. Valliani jewelers. Hundreds of People Racing out of the great mall last night, this milpitas mom said she ran for ten minutes with her son. And my son is like hes in shock. He said, i dont want to go to school. And its very horrible experience. Reporter Milpitas Police say they are now looking for three men who went into the jewelers around 7 30, smashed the glass cases, grabbed jewelry and ran out. Some shoppers mistook the sound for gunfire and ran to get away from what they thought was an active shooter. This mom grabbed her two young. Ers and ran to a nearby apartment complex. I see everyone running out the door. I go with them outside. Reporter others hid in the back rooms of stores hours after Police Ordered them to take shelter. Investigators say they are now looking into the possibility the crime is linked to a similar smashandgrab hours earlier at another vallianis jewelers at vintage fair mall in modesto. Today at the great mall, the jeweler is open and you can see the smashed case is covered with a black cloth. While some shoppers returned to the mall, she says shes still too scared to go back. Very horrible. No, i dont want to go there for at least six months. Reporter Milpitas Police tell me that it does not appear that the suspects caught on tape in modesto are the same suspects caught on surveillance tape here in milpitas. But they are still looking into a possible connection between those two crimes. Also, we did receive a statement from the great mall, and they say that they do have proactive security measures, and that includes continuously patrolling inside the mall and here outside in the parking lot. Reporting live in milpitas, Marianne Favro, nbc bay area news. That is a popular mall. Thank you, marianne. Well, the family who lost a loved one in a Traffic Accident is heading to Livermore City Hall for a City Council Meeting this evening asking for change. A driver hit and killed 26yearold her earlier this month. As she was crossing east avenue near jensen street, it was in the evening. Her family says the lighting on the street needs to be improved and theyll make their case during tonights meeting. Livermore police, though, say that the last time that a pedestrian was killed at that intersection was 11 years ago. New information tonight shows some bay area cities dont have proper escape routes for emergencies. You may remember what happened the deadly camp fire in butte county last year. The roads out of paradise and other towns in that area quickly got clogged and part of the reason we told you a few minutes ago about that project along highway 17 in los gatos to clear the roads there. 85 people died last year in butte county. Researchers now say roads throughout our entire highrisk fire areas cant handle evacuations. There just arent enough lanes. The cities mostly at risk, yountville, saint helene a, pin ole, marina city, sausalito and fairfax. They could widen the roads, but that could cost billions of dollars. The optimism heard from President Trump about reopening trade talks with china, the dow closed up by more than 200 points. G7 summit closed with leaders showing a united front following reports of tension, though, behind the scenes over a fragile global economy. After days of escalation in the u. S. china trade war, President Trump is insisting there will be a deal, even after last week when he called chinas president the enemy. The way i negotiate, its done very well for me over the years and its doing even better for the country. When asked about a possible trade deal, Chinas Foreign Ministry said it didnt know what the president was talking about. President trump, though, says he is open to meeting with iran on a new nuclear deal as well, but he says only under the right conditions. Also at the g7 summit, President Trump skipping the Climate Change session. The president says he couldnt make it because he was having discussions with germanys chancellor and indias prime minister. However, both of them were at the meeting. Lets bring in our political analyst, Larry Gersten joins us not just the g7 meeting, Climate Change is a hot topic, no pun intend ed. What role does the u. S. Play right now . What role should the u. S. Be playing . Not a major player even though the United States is a major polluter. Thats part of the irony here wondering why wasnt the president in that chair today. But if you look at the largest polluting nations today, the u. S. Ranks second. Was first for many, many years. Now china is number one at 28 . U. S. Is 15 . The other three together make up about 60 , almost 60 of the polluting nations. So yes, the United States is a major player in pollution, but not a major player in dealing with it, especially since we pulled out of the paris climate accords a couple years ago. Pibknow, the president keeps insisting we have the cleanest water, we have the cleanest air in the world. Is that accurate . No, its not. Okay. The u. S. Is one of the dirty est nations in the world it tons out. In this country, per se, we have a lot of issues relating to these issues. If you look at some things like air pollution, need i tell you, air pollution here, california ranks 50th, 50th in air pollution. As a matter of fact, of the ten largest polluting areas in this state, guess what, seven excuse me, in the country, seven are in california. In california . By the way, the bay area ranks 8th of all the polluting areas in the country, 8 lgts. I think thats surprising to a lot of people thats right. There are other areas as well. Land not so bad. When it comes to toxicity in lantd were 21st. When it comes to water, we rank 9th as the worst water state in the country. As a matter of fact, we have 20 excuse me, 2 1 2 million californians right now drinking unsafe water according to federal laws. Okay, do we really care and i ask that preface with the 2020 election coming up. With all the candidates, especially the democrats trying to maximize this topic, do we care enough to make a difference at the ballot box . Raj, thats a good question. So many of us around here consider Climate Change really important. Take a step back. The pew Research Center, just a couple months ago, asked questions about the 18 leading issues in this country. Climate Climate Change ranked 17th. 17th out of the 18. So, when you think about the president calling Climate Change a hoax and saying, we dont care about it, you know, yeah, we have issues, but theyre not important. You know what, maybe the president is more in sync with more americans than wed like to think. Sure, questions Like Health Care number two, the economy always number one. Climate change 17th out of those 18th issues. Good story. All right. Thank you very much, larry. Thank you, larry. Landmark ruling in oklahoma today, Johnson Johnson is ordered to pay more than half a billion dollars. So i do think over the next three to four hours well begin to see that ocean breeze moving in and helping your temperatures to drop off. But if youre headed to San Francisco tonight, just be ready for those cool temps. Right now 62 degrees and were dropping down to the. 50 with that fog staying put all the way into tomorrow morning. There has also been Something Else working in the weather today. You may have noticed a little humidity. I think were going to keep humidity the next two days. What we have happening is remnant moisture of what was once Tropical Storm ivo to the south, so the primary things for us is some humidity, little bit of cloud cover, temperatures will stay warm. Lets show you the satellite radar picture. Its very interesting. Youll see right now we do have some rainfall right there off to the west. Most of this is staying out to the pacific, but there is the possibility some of this cloud cover moving into the bay area, and also a slight chance here of am rainfall. I dont see a big possibility for bay area. For california itself there will be a chance of showers by wednesday over the sierra and also through the central valley. So well watch it very close on wednesday. But right now once again, it looks like just a little bit of humidity moving on in. So as we get you ready for the Tuesday Morning forecast, the thing we want you to know if youre doing commuting near the bay or the coast, that fog is back. Well start you off with a chilly 62 in the peninsula. Mostly clear in the trivalley and 72 over to the south bay. 69, fog in San Francisco with 61 for the morning commute. Similar clouds in the north bay. And for the east bay, anywhere from 66 near the water to 74 for those inland valleys. So kind of a mild start there for those inland valleys for the afternoon. Tomorrow it stays warm to hot right here in the south bay. Some of the hottest morgan hill at 95. Los gatos 94. The east bay right back here in those inland valleys, get all that heat trapped. 98 in antioch, u90spper in livermore, danville, also walnut creek. Closer to the bay breeze will have you at 79 in oakland. Through the peninsula cool 66 in Half Moon Bay. To redwood city at 84. San francisco 60s, right along the ocean with that stronger ocean breeze. And you had head to the mission or emrcero and i have you in the 70s. As you move thrgh tomorrow, a little milder there. More off to the north away from any ocean influence, were in the low 100s through ukiah and clearlake and back down to sonoma 89. Mill valley 82. My extended forecast in San Francisco has morning fog, afternoon sunshine and not too hot right into the weekend with plenty of low to mid 70s. And even next week on labor day starting off good. For the inland valleys, one more day, hang on, of the hot weather with 98. Wednesday were down to 89. 80s into friday. Little bit hotter there for the weekend, but no 100s. Well in the low 90s. So a nice start, thamidity good for the skin, maybe bad for your hair. Make it a little big. Poofy. I think youre feeling the effects of that. Its a little miamiish. I like the volume in your hair.
