This is a very popular place for people to come hiking or horse back riding. You see the stables over my shoulder. Today was the backdrop for a tragedy. Here is what we know. Here at thornton state beach there was a man, a 67yearold man, according to the National Park service, who was out walking with his dog. At some point along the way, this is an offleash area, that dog got away from the man and got onto a cliff. Well show you, im not quite sure what portion of the video youre seeing, but there is a steep ravine. Beyond the ra veechb is where the cliff is that leads you to the ocean. Thats where the man lost control of his dog and went to try to save him. According to the National Park service, he fell about 500 feet at that point when he tried to save the dog and landed on the beach. Eventually a chp helicopter came in. They were assisting the recovery here with north county Fire Protection district. They located man, brought him back on the helicopter. He was transported to the San Mateo County coroners van. This is a tricky place to conduct this sort of recovery. We spoke with a woman who works next door at the horse stable. She was describing the fact this is the intersection of many different counties and jurisdictions. Jus the difficulty of getting down there. Here she is. This place is not maintenance. We do not have atvs, people who can come on quads, things like that. Lots of people come to the facility. We need to cover more ground to help these people. Again, there were multiple agencies here. The chp, daly city fire, daly city police, pacifica. There was also the state and National Park services here. Its tricky jurisdiction. All of them involved. You can see as we start off tomorrow morning likely frost down in the south bay with 31 degrees. 34 for the average in the peninsula, 29 in the trivalleys for the average. Certainly scraping some ice on the windshield here. Also looking at 20s to start in the north bay with my average at 27. And watch out usually youre good with a lighter jacket, but youll need a heavier jacket tomorrow morning. As we get the cold weather moving in, it often doesnt get this chilly in the bay area. Dress in layers. It helps to trap heat right next to your body. These heat pockets when you dress in layers. It works. Dont forget the hat as well. Bring the peps inside. Any kind of exposed pipes, go to the Hardware Store and get insulation to wrap around that. And cover up the sensitive plants. Coldest time tomorrow morning will be at 6 57 in the morning. Once we get over the chill, temperatures will warm up, but it wont get overly mild like we had last week. In San Francisco, low 50s into the marina. Winds at times 15 to 20 Miles Per Hour will help to gives a bit of a windchill, but rebounding to 50s in the north bay under sunny skies. On the extended forecast, the big things to watch out for will be not only the cold temperatures to start the morning but the possibility of some showers, a chance wednesday and thursday, also on sunday and monday in the forecast.
