State of the Union Address last night. And i have to say, he did all white. [ laughter ] i mean, look at em. I havent seen old white guys that happy since the last tom clancy book signing. [ laughter ] yup, President Trump gave his state of the Union Address last night. And Bernie Sanders hasnt looked this unhappy since since the last time we saw Bernie Sanders. [ light laughter ] after the state of the union, President Trump was caught on a hot mic yesterday saying he plans to release a controversial memo about fbi surveillance. Incidentally, hot mic is something this man has never been called. [ laughter ] you mean hot mike . No, not him. Following the state of the Union Address last night, eric trump said in a new interview that he was focused on the democrats during the event. As opposed to melania, who was focused as always on an imaginary spot 1,000 yards away. [ laughter ] [ laughter and applause ] [ cheers and applause ] the Fact Checking site politifact crashed last night when users logged on to check the validity of President Trumps claims during the state of the Union Address. Fortunately, they set up a helpful error message. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] in a new interview, White House Press secretary Sarah Huckabee sanders said that House Minority leader nancy pelosi should quote, smile a lot more often. And that senator ted cruz should smile never. [ laughter ] police in philadelphia have announced they will not grease light poles ahead of the super bowl. Because the grease did not deter people from climbing poles following the nfc championship game. In fact, all it did was made them impossible to arrest. [ laughter ] get him. I cant. Hes too slippery. [ light laughter ] and finally, puppy bowl 14 will air this weekend on animal planet. [ cheers and applause ] all right. [ light laughter ] thats right, puppy bowl 14 will air this weekend on animal planet. And this is exciting. It includes a half time performance by pitbull. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] ladies and gentlemen, we have a fantastic show for you tonight. Shes starring in Fifty Shades Freed. Shes one of our favorites. Dakota johnson is back on the show. [ cheers and applause ] so happy to have her here. From the new miniseries waco on the paramount network, Taylor Kitsch joins us tonight. [ cheers and applause ] and she is the White House Correspondent for the New York Times. Maggie haberman is here. Im so excited about that. [ cheers and applause ] before we get to all that, President Trump delivered his first state of the Union Address last night. As he and his gop allies forge ahead with their attempts to discredit the russia investigation. For more on this, its time for a closer look. [ cheers and applause ] giving trump credit for getting through the state of the union speech is like giving a dog credit for wearing a sweater. [ light laughter ] he didnt pick that sweater out. And he certainly didnt put it on. [ light laughter ] so he might look like a Perfect Little gentleman. But all he wants is to get that sweater off and get back to licking his balls. [ laughter ] remember, whatever trump says, when he is reading from a script, is inevitably undercut once the teleprompter is off. Remember this from his joint address to Congress Last year. The time for small thinking is over. The time for trivial fights is behind us. Seth trump reads the teleprompter in a way that lets you know it is the first time hes seen those words. [ light laughter ] hes like a grandmother reading the throw pillow you got her for her birthday. We only regret the chances we do not take. So true. [ laughter ] thats right, no more small thinking, no more trivial fights. So how has trump behaved in the year since he said that . President trump firing back at rapper jayz. Retweeting a video edited to show him knocking over former rival Hillary Clinton with a golf ball. [ light laughter ] tweeting out this doctored video himself pummeling a man with an edited cnn logo over his face. New nickname from President Trump, dickey durbin. Calling the california democrat sneaky diane. Crying chuck schumer. Little bob corker. Sloppy steve. It appears to show him pushing a nato leader out of the way. Why would kim jongun insult me by calling me old when i would never call him short and fat . [ laughter ] seth the only way trump could get more trivial fights is if he somehow managed to get involved in the taylor swift Kim Kardashian feud. Kanye and taytay are both wrong. Im the one who made her famous. But she will never give me credit. Sad theolddonaldisdead. [ laughter ] the trump speech last night was a list of conventional republican platitudes married with his usual cultural war on demagoguery and antiimmigrant bigotry. And while republicans leapt to their feet after every other sentence, the reaction from democrats is obviously much more muted. Like this reaction from nancy pelosi who remained mostly stone faced throughout the night. She looks like the principal who just found out a bunch of students moved her car to the roof. [ laughter ] everyone in the gymnasium now but no reaction was better than Bernie Sanders grumpy slow clapping. [ applause ] [ laughter ] seth thats how your grandfather claps when you tell him you just started doing your own podcast. Oh, bravo. When i was your age, i built a house with my bare hands with wood i chopped from a tree i planted. But you go ahead and cast your pod. [ light laughter ] trump was annoyed by the lack of enthusiasm from democrats. Because every time he said something he thought democrats should stand applaud for, he gestured to them to make sure they heard him and gave them a standing ovation. Over the next few weeks, the house and senate will be voting on an Immigration Reform package for 1. 8 million Illegal Immigrants who were brought here by their parents at a young age. That covers almost three times more people than the Previous Administration covered. It is also time to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure. [ applause ] [ laughter ] one of my greatest priorities is to reduce the price of prescription drugs. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] seth youve been criticizing democrats all year. They are not going to give you a standing ovation just because you told them to. Youre like a conductor trying to get the horn section to play a piece you wrote called trombones suck. [ laughter ] trump was so desperate for the praise he apparently was not getting from democrats, that throughout the speech he resorted to clapping for himself. The state of our union is strong. Because our people are strong. [ applause ] the motto is in god we trust. [ cheers and applause ] [ light laughter ] and we are serving our brave veterans, including giving our veterans choice in their health care decisions. [ applause ] [ light laughter ] seth wow. That is the sound of two very soft hands. [ light laughter ] sounds like someone slapping two raw chicken breasts together. [ light laughter ] so while trump managed to read off the teleprompter for 80 minutes, his white house and republicans in congress forged ahead with their attempt to discredit the russia investigation and the Law Enforcement agencies conducting the investigation. Now, if it sounds to you like trump is an urgent threat to the constitution, you are not alone. Even trumps epa administrator scott pruitt used to agree with you. As we found out when old audio from a 2016 interview surfaced for the first time yesterday. I believe that donald trump in the white house would be more abusive of the constitution than barack obama. And thats saying a lot. Seth now pruitt just happened to have a hearing in the senate yesterday where he was grilled on those comments in 2016. And tried to claim he didnt remember saying them, which give democrats an opening for an easy slam dunk. All they had to do was play the audio back for pruitt and watch him squirm. Fortunately, when senator Sheldon Whitehouse tried to do that, he fumbled it. You told mr. Campbell, i believe that donald trump in the white house would be more abusive to the constitution than barack obama. And thats saying a lot. Do you recall saying that . I dont, senator. Would you and i dont echo that today at all. I guess not. Given your comments about hubris afraid i lost it. [ light laughter ] we have im having technical difficulties. Seth oh, my god, democrats youre not even good at being nerds. [ light laughter ] you use an iphone like dads trying to take a prom photo. How does this thing work . Oh, no, i accidentally snapchatted myself. [ laughter ] nonetheless, pruitts evolution from trump critic to lackey very much captures the modern gop in a microcosm as trump has become more authoritarian, more unhinged, more lawless. The gop has only gotten more protective of him. Just take the secret memo House Republicans voted to release claiming to expose wrongdoing by the fbi in its investigation of the trump campaign. The memo is reportedly four pages. Selectively cherry picked for the purpose of discrediting the fbi. In fact, today the fbi even released a statement saying we have grave concerns about material admissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memos accuracy. And a former cia director put it this way. This is from former acting cia director john mclaughlin. Where he says, fisa warrants typically are big thick documents. 50, 60 pages. If the nunes memo is like four pages, you can bet it is carefully picked from a bowl of cherries. Seth and you cant just cherry pick what you like. It wouldnt be fair for me to say that this was from last nights state of the union. Over the past year i have committed many crimes, so many crimes. [ laughter ] seth thats cherry picking. And it is not fair. [ cheers and applause ] now, to be clear, to be very clear, you do not have to revere the fbi to be concerned about what trump and the gop are doing. It is absolutely true that the fbi has abused its power many times throughout its history. But you could believe that and also be worried about trump and the gop attempted to purge Law Enforcement agencies for their own political ends. Because they are not actually worried about the real abuses of power. If anything, what theyre doing will make abuses of power much more likely. But hey, dont worry. Because the democrats are on the case. Oh, afraid ive lost it. [ laughter ] seth this has been a closer look. [ cheers and applause ] seth well be right back with dakota johnson, everybody. [ cheers and applause ] for more of seths closer looks, be sure to subscribe to late night on youtube. Smoky mountain barbecue Fried Chicken so crispy and sweet that crispy Fried Chicken. [ cheers and applause ] seth please welcome back dakota johnson, everyone. [ cheers and applause ] seth welcome back. Thank you. Seth im always so happy to have you here. Congrats on the film. Thank you. Seth very exciting. This film has, unlike the first few, had some actual action sequences. Yes. Seth fight scenes. Yes. Seth car chases. Yeah. Seth i assume you have a stunt double. You werent chasing your own cars in the film. Well, i did some of the driving. Seth you did . I did. Seth are you a good driver . Im a really, really good driver. Seth oh wow. Yeah. Seth and this is always true of you . Well i think that as my acting career fails, that i will either be a florist or i could be a professional race car driver. Seth really . [ light laughter ] those are two very different paths. [ light laughter ] i feel like there are no race car drivers currently who are theyre both so relaxing. Seth currently who were like, it was either this or florist. [ laughter ] you dont know them. Seth i dont know them. Thats true. I hope to talk to none of them. You dont know what they like. Seth you know what, i apologize to everyone in the race car industry. Now, you have you have a pickup truck. Yes. Seth that is your real life car. Yes, i have a its a 95 f150. Seth how did you come about having a 95 f150. It was my grandfathers truck. And before he passed away, my dad got him a new truck, so he gave me the old one. So i had it brought out in l. A. And it just is kind of a nightmare. [ laughter ] seth what part is a nightmare . Just that its really old . Well, its really big and slow. Its like a beater truck. You cruise around in it seth do you use it for hauling . Are you someone who does their own hauling . Yes. I haul so many stuff. [ laughter ] seth i will say, yeah because theres i always see like, stars are just like us. And its like, dakotas hauling again. [ light laughter ] there she is hauling old george out of the ditch again. [ light laughter ] seth oh, you haul people you drive around l. A. And just pull people out of ditches. Yeah, i tow people. Seth ive heard that about you. Youre like a johnny appleseed, but of towing people out of holes. Yeah, yeah. Or if you need me to move your furniture. [ light laughter ] seth so, this is you guys filmed the second and third movies at the same time. Yeah. Seth and was that more fun, more interesting or more difficult . It was tricky, because we had to go back and forth between i mean, obviously, both movies cause some locations would be the same. And then we kind of did all the sex scenes at the same time. Seth okay. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] i will although, i dont know why people are cheering. If i think about all the sex ive ever had at the same time, im like, oh thats not i dont want that. [ laughter ] i want a long nice break. But it also took a minute. They were like [ clapping ] [ laughter ] seth they were like, i dont know how i feel about it what to do . She said sex. Oh my god. [ light laughter ] but we do them all like, back to back, pretty much because theyre in the same locations. So then seth bedrooms and stuff . Yeah. [ laughter ] and so, we you want to try to like, mix it up and not have them all be the same. You know . Seth yeah. Well, yeah. I mean, it would like ruin the whole idea of fifty shades if it was the same kind of sex. [ laughter ] one shade. Seth one shade. [ light laughter ] well, you guys are married in the final. So nowadays, its one shade from here on out. [ light laughter ] yeah. Seth fifty shades she is bored. She is resigned. Seth fifty shades the partys over. [ light laughter ] yeah. Fifty shades of [ laughter ] seth you filmed in a home that is it true it was Sarah Mclachlans actual home . We shot in Sarah Mclachlans house and she came to visit. And she sang a song on the piano, which was so, so funny to me. Only because i got really uncomfortable because it was a very serious moment and seth yeah. Im the person that laughs in the serious moment. [ laughter ] so i was just in a complete giggle attack. And then, when that happens, i cry. [ laughter ] seth okay, gotcha. So then it just looked like i was really emotional about in the arms of an angel. Seth oh, you came full circle . The aspca commercial. Seth yeah. It was already a sad song and then we married it to images of really upset animals. Yes. Seth its like, yeah to the nth degree sad. Yes. Seth it would be a terrible song to laugh through. Right, which is what i did. Seth okay. [ light laughter ] but she never knew, until this moment. Until right now, and im so sorry. [ light laughter ] seth you grew up in aspen. Are you a skier . Wait, i have to make it clear, though, that i wasnt laughing at her. Because i do think shes brilliant. I was laughing because it was like, my crew. And were filming Fifty Shades Freed. [ light laughter ] and then Sarah Mclachlan is on the piano. And so the whole thing is was really weird. Seth yeah, i know. I mean, thats a decent cover story. [ laughter ] okay. Seth you grew up in aspen. Are you a skier . No, i hate skiing. So yes, i did grow up there. Seth but i grew up in New Hampshire and was very ski friendly too and i hate skiing as well. Why do you hate it . Well, why do you hate it . Seth i hate it because, one, i think its worse in New Hampshire because its colder. I was cold all the time. And i just was always bored. Every time i was skiing, i was just thinking about other stuff. Which i dont think is safe. [ light laughter ] probably not. Seth yeah. Yeah, i dont trust my body. Seth oh . [ light laughter ] but did you ever even try . To ski . Seth yeah. Yeah, i skied until i was 15 and then one day i was like, wait, this sucks. [ light laughter ] seth isnt it great when you realize something that you have been doing as a family, you actually have the power to be like, i dont like this anymore. Yeah. Seth yeah. Its great. Also, i would do this really weird thing where i would dress up like i was gonna go skiing or snowboarding. And id have, like really cute outfits and put my hair in little braids and things. And then i would just go into town and like, walk around like i just came off the mountain. [ laughter ] but i didnt. Seth okay, gotcha. Yeah. People make fun of me for that, still. Like, kids i grew up with. Seth as long as you didnt the thing that would be unforgivable is if you also wore ski boots to that and were just like, that heavy boot going into stores. [ light laughter ] you didnt do that, right . Thats the other thing thats so silly. Its like, people look so funny walking in ski boots. Seth walking in ski boots. And they take it so seriously. And theyre walking down the street, but their legs are like this. [ laughter ] seth theres no yeah. Nothing would be worse than something happening where you have to run in ski boots. I think id rather like if an avalanche came, i think id be like, im just gonna let it take me. [ laughter ] i could try to run away from it, but i think i would never forget how dumb i looked in those ski boots. [ light laughter ] yeah, just give in. Seth you come from a family of actors. Your parents, your grandmother. You auditioned for julliard. I did not realize this. Seems like you should have been a slam dunk. No . No. [ laughter ] seth so what happened with your julliard audition . Well, a lot of things went wrong. But i they ask you to choose two monologues. And i choose they choose one classic, one contemporary. And i chose one that was written by steve martin. [ light laughter ] seth okay. And one that was a juliet monologue. And they didnt understand the steve martin seth yeah. But i think hes the best. Seth i would say he qualifies as the classic. Yeah. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] yeah. Me too, actually. And then they ask you sometimes to sing. Like very, very randomly theyll ask you. Itd be like, oh, maybe youd be good in the theater department. Seth oh, so while youre up there, you dont know ahead of time you have to sing. They just say sing now. No, no. And maybe it was in very, very fine print. But i didnt see that part. Seth okay, gotcha. So anyway, it was around the time that radioheads album in rainbows came out. And im a really big seth a great singalong album. [ laughter ] clearly a really big radiohead fan. Seth yeah. And they ask me to sing, naturally, after my steve martin monologue. Seth yeah. I fell very flat. Seth they were like, we loved wild and crazy guys. But [ light laughter ] they were like, that was okay. Can you sing . And i was like yeah. And they were like, okay just whatever song you chose. So then i started singing, oh god, a radiohead song. [ light laughter ] which they also didnt understand. [ laughter ] seth oh wow. I was just far too indie for julliard. Seth yeah. And was it one of those things when you walked, did you think to yourself, well, i dont know. Its a coin flip. Or were you like, that did not go well. Im pretty sure we mutually agreed that it wasnt gonna work out. [ laughter ] seth thats good. You were like, i have bad news for you, julliard. I also do not choose you. [ light laughter ] yeah. They were like, we dont get you. And i was like, you dont get me. [ light laughter ] seth well im glad it all worked out. Thank you for being here. Thank you. Seth its always such a pleasure to see you. Dakota johnson, everybody. [ cheers and applause ] Fifty Shades Freed is in theaters february 9th. Well be right back with Taylor Kitsch. [ cheers and applause ] seth our next guest is an actor you know best as tim riggins from tvs critically acclaimed friday night lights he is currently starring as david koresh in paramount networks six part miniseries waco. Lets take a look. Hello. Hello, who am i speaking with . This is david. The notorious. Hi, david. This is gary, fbi. Hey, gary. How are you doing . You know, i suppose weve both had better days. Yeah. Youre telling me. Seth please welcome to the show Taylor Kitsch, everyone. [ cheers and applause ] seth welcome. Very happy to have you here. First time. Seth first time here. First time, yeah. [ cheers and applause ] seth and this i watched the First Episode of this. I found it really engaging. Do you remember where you were when this all happened, because, of course, when you watch stories like these, you go, oh, 1993, i remember this being on the news all the time. I was 12 years old. Seth i was also 12. [ light laughter ] i think i remember just that last terrible shot of the compound in flames, to be honest. And i dont even know if i really remember that part at that age. But obviously growing up or learning some history being from canada or what not, so, the one other one. [ cheers ] seth yeah, yeah. Yeah, thats my mom, by the way. [ light laughter ] seth yeah. Yes, so that is really all i really remember. Seth its interesting because i think thats true of a lot of us. We remember the tail end of it. Of course, this story takes you back. And one of the things, which, of course makes sense when he was followed by so many people, is there is a charisma and likeability to him. So, youre not playing a mad man as much as you are playing somebody who had this ability to connect with people. Was that a strange way to approach it . I think that is the right way to approach it. I think, obviously, during the siege, it was very sensationalized and one side with the press and what not. The dividians were cut off from the press. So i think what were doing here is basically humanizing not only dave but the dividians and their families, the followers and what he was so good at was giving them purpose. And, i think everyone searches for that at some time in their life, multiple times and what not. But and, he was a messenger, selfproclaimed messenger of god. So, if he had no followers, hes got no purpose as well. So he needed them as much as they needed him. Seth it was based on a couple of books. Yeah. Seth a couple of fbi guys and then a guy who was in the dividians. Yeah, david thibodaux. So we optioned gary noesners book, whos the lead fbi negotiator. Seth thats who Michael Shannon plays . Mike shannon, yeah. Up and coming green actor. Seth yeah, it might work out. It might work out for him. Yeah. Hes amazing. Seth yeah, hes a great actor. Yeah, and then david thibodaux, one of the nine survivors of the final siege. And he was on set every day and i think thats like the ultimate flattery and validation. After day one was a a sermon about joy and being a dividian and that was a big one. So he was there on day one obviously, and that was to have him kind of tip the hat was just let me fly from there on. Seth obviously, you had to do a lot of bible study for this role. Yeah. Seth you also had to lose a lot of weight for this role. 30. Seth you also had to learn how to play guitar and sing a little bit because he was a musician. Was that was the most intimidating part . I think its all encompassing for sure. But i mean, i was learning getting voice lessons in l. A. And it was the second time and i was like nowhere even near of hitting any notes. Seth your second voice lesson . Yeah, second voice lesson. Get in there and walk in and it was you know, theres a gal that was doing broadway or what not in right with the piano and the teacher. And i literally just sat back and she was incredible. And they went like five minutes over and they stopped. And im kind of just sitting there just, you know, listening, loving it. And, shes like, oh, my god, im so sorry, im a big fan. I just ran over and im like, well, im talking to the coach at this point, im like, well, you start at a ten. And then now, were going to start like below zero, and like im gonna make your ears bleed. Seth well, thats the depressing thing when you go and you realize people who are great are also getting voice lessons. You were like, oh, i thought this was all for people who were terrible. [ light laughter ] it is like a picture of celine dion right next to me. Seth yeah, i have a feeling you and celine werent starting from the same its not a level playing field. No. Seth so, i want to ask, friday night lights, fantastic show. Thank you. [ cheers and applause ] seth im assuming you get approached all the time. How do people approach you in that show . Like, is there just an emotional connection constantly . One. They want to get drunk with tim riggins. Seth yeah, that makes sense. Which yeah, tim would do that a lot. [ light laughter ] no, i mean, i live in austin, texas, which is an amazing city. And so its obviously being in texas, you get a bit more of it. But people, you know, are just incredibly flattering and they want to have a drink with you 90 of the time or talk about coach. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] yeah, who still lives in austin as well. Seth that, i feel like, you are making it hard for people by living in the city it was filmed, because you cant say to them, hey, thats not me, and theyd be like, well, then you should have moved. [ light laughter ] im still living in the past i think. Seth so, im going to make a weird leap here, but david koresh was a failed musician to some degree or a musician. Yes. Seth and there was something about music and sermonizing and connecting with an audience in the same way you do as a religious leader. I think we share a great love of bruce springsteen. Yes. [ cheers and applause ] seth and hes on broadway right now. I thought i actually it was very close to a religious experience for me. Yes. Seth you went a couple of nights ago . I did. Seth how was it . Man, he raised me, that guy. Seth yeah. He really did. I was just blown away. I cried. I laughed. It is just as much as hes telling his story, you just he takes you back. And it is just like you remember these beats of your first kiss to, you know, traveling in the car, obviously. Or the first time you went camping. Or all of these kind of beats throughout your life. So it was just incredible. Seth the other thing about it is not the cheapest tickets youll ever going to buy. No. Seth and then i dont during the show, i had this realization, i would have paid ten times. Yeah. Seth this is the biggest deal ive ever gotten. I came out of there and i went with my best friend and im like, i wouldve easily paid way more for that. Seth yeah. It was a lifealtering experience. Seth yeah, i threw money on stage at the end. [ light laughter ] oh really . I threw panties. My panties were up there. [ laughter ] seth thanks so much for being here. Thanks for having me. Seth congrats on the show. Really a pleasure. Please welcome to the show maggie haberman, everyone. [ cheers and applause ] seth welcome to the show. Thanks for having me. Seth i feel like i know you. I feel like i know you far better than i know you because i read you all of the time. You have known donald trump for years. You have covered him back in his Real Estate Days. So i want to ask about last night. He talks a lot about unity. And then, at the same time, said very divisive things. Do you think hes aware of the contradictions that exist when he speaks . No, i dont. [ light laughter ] and i could go into depth about that if you like. Look, i mean a. , i dont think he knows and, b. , i dont think he cares. Seth yes. One of the things that he did during the campaign, his particular talent was seeming to take both sides of an issue, sometimes in the same sentence. Seth yeah. And so, last night, you had the soaring rhetoric at the very beginning. A couple of people compared it to like bohemian rhapsody. [ light laughter ] it was like, here is this part and heres that. So, there was the chorus of unity and soaring rhetoric and then we got to immigration and chain migration as he talks about all the time and limiting the number of people that could come to the country. And that is where his administration has rested, is on those policies. And he does not see an issue. Seth you mentioned that thing about not caring, i think it is very unlikely. And maybe you can confirm this. Did he ever finish his speaking anywhere and has a moment of self doubt. Or like, oh, no, those two dont make sense together. He might have a moment of self doubt but they are not about the things you are thinking. [ light laughter ] he has moments of self doubt about the visuals or how the scene looked or whether a particular line sounded good or he will test things out with different people. Hes not thinking of it the way youre thinking of it. Seth got it. Im starting to think he and i dont think the same way about anything. [ light laughter ] no. No. And i feel like we arrived at that a while ago when you were in the same room with him at the white house correspondants dinner. Seth in 2011. Yeah. Sorry, i cant get that out of my head. Seth no, we had a different take on that one too. [ light laughter ] so i want to ask this. Because you covered him for so long, it does seem like he likes you. And at times, and then at other times does not like you. But you certainly have a relationship with him that provides you a decent amount of access. And it is true that he reached out to sort of criticize your work at times and gone so far as to sort of rate it . There was one incident in particular when i was in the Oval Office Last year and he was giving me a very hard time about a number of stories. And he kept saying something to the effect of you never write fairly about me. And i reminded him of a story i had done about maralago that he had thanked me for. Which to be clear, was not the goal of the story. And then he said, that is right. Think that was about an eight or Something Like that. [ light laughter ] and it was not thats not normally what you but no, i mean, look, ive gotten the angry reaction. Ive gotten the sharpy notes that an aide will take a picture of and send you. And then phone calls thanking for a certain story. And from each moment to the next, it is like the other didnt happen. Seth yeah. It just starts all over. Seth because youve cover him for so long in Real Estate Days and know i feel like how he used to behave and versus how he behaves now, it does seem like he thought this job would be easier. Where do you think that comes from . So i think a few things. A. , i dont think he thought much about running what this job would entail other than running for it. Seth yeah. I remember having a conversation with someone close to him during i think it was june, maybe, of 2016. And i said, does he want to win, just win . Is that it . Or does he actually want to be president . And the person stopped and said, you know, thats a really good question. [ light laughter ] and i thought, that is it indeed. And i think that was the answer. And look, he would be candid that he didnt spend a whole lot of time thinking about being superstitious. But i also think that his view of the executive power was formed in the 1980s. And hes got this weird, preserved in amber thing. His cultural references are all about time magazines, and sort of movies and celebrities from a certain period of time. And that was sort of 1980s new york which was a pretty corrupt City Government where he was a real estate developer. Where laws and regulations existed to get around. And these were obstacles that you moved. And thats, i think, what he thought it was going to be like. It was basically going to be like mayor of the country. That is not what it is. [ light laughter ] seth turns out that is not how it is. It is much harder. Seth what do you think would bother him more. Because he talks about the fake news and how hes unfairly treated in the press. What would bother him more . A continuation of that or if no one ever wrote another word about it . That. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] there you go. Not even a close call. Seth and do you think he was aware of that . And do you think he has a fear that a day will go by where hes not the yes, yes, yes. Even as president , i still think he has that fear. I had an exaide say to me at one point that he cant go more than a few days without seeing his name in the news. And you will see you know, there is this thing he does, he loves sitting in the dining room next to the oval office or wherever hes tweeting from. [ laughter ] and hell be watching television and hell tweet. And then hell see the news change. And then he is suddenly on the screen. And he loves that cause and effect. So yeah, he would he cant exist without the media. Seth that you know, again, i also think it would be pretty cool to be able to tweet and make tv change. [ light laughter ] like, i dont begrudge him. No, it takes hours. [ light laughter ] but i so i get the instantaneous feedback of it. I guess i wish it was more controlled. For a different purpose. Seth for a different purpose. Yeah. I want to ask, one of the reasons not only do i feel as though i know you, i feel i i have a connection with a lot of other New York Times reporters, is this wonderful podcast called the daily where Michael Barbaro is the host of it. And this has wonderful its the right length for me. Its like 25 minutes every day. And he usually has a reporter on. Youve been on often to talk about the biggest story of the day. Is this something you like to do . Because, obviously, its on top of being a journalist, you also have to be a guest on a podcast. Its complicated. Its great, though. And michaels an old friend. Weve been friends for a decade. He has this great sonorous voice. Its a very npr kind of voice. And so hes developed this format. And its amazing. I knew him as a reporter who was writing articles and hes excelled at this. But he has a way of drawing people out and getting you to say something. And its so not a New York Times voice platform. Its very different. So you actually have to be careful to remember that you are not hanging out with michael over a dinner and go a little too far. And i think that is the only risk. But its a wonderful three dimensional tell the story that youre working on. And also to tell how you did the story. Seth yeah. I think there is a lot of process that people dont understand about what we do. Especially in the era where somebody fairly prominent is screaming fake news all the time. So its a helpful way to walk through how we got stories. Seth yes. And i think, then connects me to the story when you actually hear the reporter explaining that process. Because otherwise all you know, all stories look the same in the paper. They do. Seth but you approach them all in a different way. We do them a different way. Thats very true. Seth you obviously, people, Trump Supporters criticize you a fair amount. Think you are unfair. Hillary clinton supporters also will criticize you. Yes. Seth last week you wrote a story about how hillary had an adviser on her 08 campaign. Had accusations of Sexual Harassment about him. Some of her advisers then recommend she fire him. She kept him on. There were further incidents recently. So you wrote that story, a story certainly worth writing. Last night she responded to that story. And within her response she accused the New York Times of also not handling situations like that well. Were you surprised at her reaction to it . Or was it in line with what you expected . I think it represented that statement in the way that she has handled the story in general. The problem with her candidacy over many years, which is sort of a delayed response to the initial story. And there have been legit reasons to try to figure out what had happened a long time ago. Then delivering a statement that expressed regret 15 minutes before the state of the union. And then pointing a finger at the times. Look, the New York Times has obviously had issues that it has dealt with in terms of Sexual Harassment of late. The New York Times has done a lot of coverage of this issue. The times has been pretty transparent about its own issue and process and reporter and what took place. It is a perfectly legitimate thing for her to say times were different. Context was different. This is why i made the decision. But it is also legitimate to ask the question. And the story just wasnt about 2007 and 2008. It was that this is somebody who then went on to lead a super pac supporting her. Was fired for the same type of literally, almost a pattern, the same time of Sexual Harassment against two other women. And she continued to stay in contact with him. He was at her book party. She thanked him in her book. These are all legitimate things to talk about in this broader conversation nationally. Seth well, i really appreciate the way you write and things you write about. Because its nice to know you know, again, we live in a very era, you know, split era where people think everyone is out to get someone. And its just nice that you write stories about the news and the way you write it. I really appreciate it. That means a lot. Seth thank you so much for being here. I really appreciate it.
