The final home that was standing on the eroding Pacifica Cliff is being demolished as you see here right now. Theyre taking it all down. Represents a new beginning for folks in the community but also an emotional end for homeowners. How are homeowners holding up . Are any of them out there, pete . Reporter yeah, good morning, emotional time for that homeowner. Theyre just finishing up here on the 500 block of the avenue. Now that home was yellow tagged, that it would be an uphill battle. It wouldnt make this morning any easier for them. We literally, from the ground up rebuilt the inside, except we took it down to the studs and we left the studs. Reporter melissa and her husband bought this hom nearl a decade ago, and until toda it was the last remaining home on the 500 block of the avenue. It sits on a cliff side reset by erosion. Caused by heavy storms and king tides over the years with dozens falling on the beach or eventually getting bulldozed. They tried to save the home last april, even sliding it 20 feet away from the cliff, but that didnt help. They eventually sold the property to the city of pacifica last year and after todays demolition, its going to be incorporated into a new trail. We researched before we bought the house. We thought wed have longer here. Reporter residents feel the demolition is in the best interest of the community. It needed to come down. Its dangerous. I dont want to see anything going sliding down into the ocean. Reporter and now melissa and her husband are left to figure out whats next. A future that wont include this home in pacifica. Its the memories that are happy even though this is sad. Itll be different tonight when it gets dark. And im thinking about it. Reporter taking you guys back out here live at that demolition, boy, just standing here, you could see how close that home was to the cliffside, of course it has been demolished as were seeing right now. But those homeowners are going to revive them, they understand with this expensive Housing Market, its not going to be easy finding their next home. Live in pacifica, nbc bay area news. Yeah, i mean, its part of the bay area history story now. Thank you, pete. Back now to our developing story in Southern California. Search and rescue efforts continue this morning after weeks devastating mudslides. This week it happened, and heres the latest information we have. 17 people are confirmed dead. Eight other people are still missing. Now 28 people are hurt and nearly 500 homes have been destroyed or damaged. 1500 are still being threatened right now. Nbc bay areas reporter is in month see toe right now, shes been covering the extensive damage thats going on there. Just heart breaking for these people. Reporter incredibly heart breaking. Laura and marcus, we have noticed that so far, it looks like crews are making a lot of progress clearing the debris for many of the major roadways in the neighborhoods here. So it was easier for us to get around this morning through the roads that were impassable yesterday. Weve also seen many more workers out here and Utility Companies taking down the power lines. Socal gas is here repairing what smells like a gas leak just up the road. So thats good news with that situation, but, the bad news is in terms of the major damage to the infrastructure, thats still a big problem. Over here, if you walk here, you can see that this home is completely unrecognizable. You cant even tell the rest. And it was wiped off its foundation. This is all the damage. This isnt something that youre going to be able to deal with in a few days. And then down this way, you can see these trees that were just pushed forward, looks like this is how the mudslide came through. So, this is the damage that were seeing in many parts of month see toe, particularly the glenn oaks neighborhood which is this neighborhood right here. And then, of course, you have the giant bolders that are along the sides of the street, off lot of the trees that are down, the power lines again, a big problem, and then down the way right there, you can see that big piece of equipment thats working hard to remove a lot of the debris and just put it to the side so that crews can continue their work here. You cant see the street because its covered in mud. And then, of course, there are these search and rescue efforts that are continuing in this area. As you mentioned, there are still eight people missing, more than a dozen people killed. Many out there still hopeful that their loved ones will be found. And yesterday, when we talked to Santa Barbara county Fire Department, the spokesperson told me that they are still hopeful they are going to be searching as long as they can for survivors, but of course, we do know that the longer it takes, the more difficult that path becomes. Thats what were seeing here. We are going to continue to stay on the ground here, bring you any latest developments if and when we get them. For now reporting live in month see toe, nbc bay area news. Thank you. The streams of mud just pushing over the street. See the damage left behind. Live look at fremont right now and kari hall told us it was going to warm up today, and its looking good out there. Looking good in parts of the bay area. Heres a look right now in San Francisco where its still cloudy and misty and drizzling right now, and they probably dont know that if you just drive a few miles, youll get into some sunshine. And im also going to be watching for a slight chance of rain in the north bay from santa rosa all the way up to ukiya through this afternoon and this evening while the rest of the bay area does stay dry. Well have a few more days to dry out before two more systems move in as we go into next week. So well detail that and how much rain we could see as well as sierra snow. Thats coming up in the full microclimate forecast. Look forward to that, thank you very much. Continuing coverage now to a story our Investigative Unit has been looking into for more than two years. New this morning, the San Jose Police department has signed an mou or memorandum of understanding with School Districts within the city. This changes the role of Police Officers who work on school campuses. Called resource officers. The new agreement means officers will be on campus solely for security purposes to keep the schools safe. In the past, those resource officers were also called in to handle disciplinary actions of a student. And that action sometimes leads to the arrest of the students. The chief of police says hes been planning to address the issue for some time. The Police Department will hold a News Conference this morning to make the official announcement. Our Investigative Unit has been looking into the impact that this has had on bay area students. Our team in fact has been honored with two prestigious ate wards for their series. The peabody award and the dupont award. It happened again, another near miss at sfo between two planes and now an investigation has been launched. Faaays on Tuesday Morning, a flight wasbout to land on the wrong runway. At the same time, sitting on that runway, a Virgin America flight about to take off. Aeromexico flight was only about 500 feet from landing when it had to pull up to go around to make a correct landing. Aviation expert explains how much time that Virgin America plane had to get out of the way if the aeromexico flight had landed on its runway. Youre looking at maybe 20 seconds, 15, 20 seconds to cover a miles distance. It was close, but there was more than enough time. The faa is now looking into what happened. There have been two similar incidents in the past nine months at sfo. So whats the best job in america . Coming up, well tell you about that occupation and why is reigned supreme. Plus they push to recall the south bay judge who proceeded over the rape case. What happened just a few hours ago that could throw that judge off the bench. And congress confused this morning as the president criticized a bill he wanted them to pass. When the midday news continues. Clara county judge just produced a petition with nearly double the signatures well the campaign to recall a santa clara judge just produced a petition with nearly double the signatures needed to qualify for the june ballot. Judge aaron persky has been under fire to a sentence that was less than a tenth of what prosecutors were asking for six months versus 72 months. Nbc bay area sanchez was there as those signatures were handed over. Chri what happens now . Reporter i can tell you laura and marcus, there were those brown card board boxes they use for files at the office, tlerp 11 of those full of almost 100,000 signatures, theyre now in the hands of the Santa Clara County registrar of voters offense. All of this part of that effort to recall judge persky. Just about two hours ago, volunteers walked those 11 boxes into the Registrars Office where they were formerly received and stamped. Now the volunteers gathered the signatures over the last four months at stanford, farmers market, san Jose Christmas in the park, other community events, any place where they thought large groups of people were going to gather. Before handing the signatures over, michelle who chairs that committee to recall the judge says the volume of the signatures speaks to the outrage of the troubling pattern of decisions in cases regarding women. The voters of Santa Clara County are saying loud and clear that they will hold judge persky accountable for his favor of athletes and other privileged offenders who commit sex crimes and violence against women. Reporter so heres what happens next, 58,000 signatures are required to qualify for the ballot. The santa clara registrar of voters has 30 days to verify those signatures if its qualified the measure then goes on to the june ballot. Recall persky, the Committee Plans to continue voter outreach up until the election they say. If voters recall him, he would only be the third judge in california history to be recalled since it became an option, that was only in the early 1900s. Without referencing the turner case, with the judge submitted his own 198word statement to the registrar that reads in part, as a prosecutor, i fought vigorously for victims, as a judge, my role is to consider both sides. California law requires every judge to consider rehabilitation and probation for first time offenders. Its not always popular, but it is the law and i took an oath to follow it without regard to Public Opinion or my opinions as a former prosecutor. Now if you would like to see the full press conference that happened here, just about two hours ago, you can watch that on my facebook page, kris sanchez nbc bay area. House just passed a bill extending special Courts Authority to spy on americans. Trump would later clarify his position. As you can see the house voted to reauthorize the fisa courts power for six more years. Right now, were tracking whats going on weather wise and kari, it started out nice, foggy day, but now a nice sunny day. We are still seeing the fog and clouds holding nonparts of the north bay. Live look outside right now in san rafael, still dealing with that low visibility aentd mist and drizzle as of now. And i think the clouds in parts of the north bay will stay around for much of the day while we are getting some clearing just label the further south. If youre doing well with your new years resolution, sticking to that jogging and going out there and being active, its going to be a Beautiful Day in pleasanton. We are going to see a mix of sun and clouds, temperatures once again reaching up to about 60 degrees and then even for the evening, it will be cooling off nicely, but we will still have a few more clouds in the mix. And thats because we do have a very weak disturbance passing just to the north of us and thats the reason why we do have a chance of rain from santa rosa up through yew chi ya and extending further to the north. Once that clears out, we will get to mostly clear skies and take it through next week with the approaching of the next storm system set to move in here early on Tuesday Morning. That i think Tuesday Morning commute will be a sloppy one. Well see se rain off and on throughout the day on tuesday. We will have a slight chance of rain from santa rosa further northward and far northwestern california. As we look at the rest of the bay area, it does stay dry tomorrow, a lot more sunshine once that system passes. And then by early next week, we will have some more rain moving in. This one on tuesday, moves in very early in the morning, and it will be moving through here fairly quickly with a shot of some light rain and some light sierra snow, but there will be an even bigger system right behind that that looks like it could cover more of the state and bring in some heavier snow showers where the sierra as we go into the end of next week. So we are going to enjoy a dry weekend, warmer temperatures, monterrey its going to be up to 68 degrees on both saturday and sunday. And then going hiking in the woods, upper 50s in the forecast for friday and saturday. Sunday there will be a few more clouds, but were still going to hold on to those mild temperatures, and then thats a look at the sierra, looking at yosemite, you can see it there covered with snow, and its going to be in the low 50s for the weekend. Also a nice weekend to take family on a nice little trip. Over the next several days, we are going to see our temperatures Holding Steady in the upper 50s for our highs, morning temperatures in the upper 40s, and then once again, that rain moving in early on tuesday, continuing into wednesday and then a more significant storm system for the end of next week, but in the near term, we are looking at some temperatures that will be warmer than where we should be and for the beginning of january, up to 64 degrees on sunday and even warmer on monday, out ahead of that system, it looks like fwl breezy and continue to track that as well. How much snow well see in the sierra, for now, looks like we could have a significant rain in that last round of rain that we had, did a lot to help catch us up to normal as far as our rainfall totals for the water year. So well talk more about that and also have another quick look at the forecast coming up in just a few minutes. Yeah, a lot of sunshine and 60 degrees temperatures.
