For years the hazard signs posted along the beach warned of rip currents and drownings but they didnt issue any advisory to stay out of the water. Thats now changed. The new signs at San Franciscos ocean beach say wading swimming and surfing is not advised. Its a much stronger message than the old signs. The park service does not advise you go in the water in any condition. This sign brings better messages to the park visitors we want them to decide based on their experience and skill level they should go in the water. Its very dangerous. Reporter locals and champion open water swimmer kim chambers know about the powerful rip currents. But out of towners dont. Last year a group of teens walked into the water. The waves overtook two of them and took them out to sea. Their teacher shared this video to celebrate two lives cut short. Seven people have died in the water in the past two years. The park service saved 75 others in risk of drowning. We pointed out that the 55 signs along the waters edge didnt reflect the message it was not a swimming beach until now. They were able to get a wider audience, it was really important to get this messaging to people coming to visit for the first time.
