Investigating a deadly shooting at a hotel. Citys first homicide of the year. Police got a call about a man suffering from a gun shot wound around midnight. He was in the lobby for an extended stay hotel. That hotel is on the 5,300 block of far well drive. He was taken to a hospital where he died. Detectives found a crime scene in one of the hotel rooms. The city of santa rosa announced that the states largest wildfire cleanup will begin tomorrow involving both state and federal agencies. Also tomorrow, the red cross announced it will be opening a Client Service center in santa rosa. Its a chance for fire victims to meet oneonone with red cross case workers. When i arrived onscene, i observed about 100plus vehicles stopped and 60 or 70 people out of their vehicles on the freeway screaming. The racers moved on to other locations including highway 87. Where some people were even captured on video spray painting the median. It all eventually fizzled out in downtown san jose, and at one point they converged on the old bay highway at the 880 overpass. Street racers shut down the entire road, north and south. The first squad car that arrived was attacked, its rear window shattered and people standing in the street began kicking it. Thats pretty intense. Police noticed the suspicious car on airway boulevard around livermores airport late officers ordered the woman to get out of the car, but they say she hit the gas instead. Speeding towards them and hitting two patrol cars. Officers opened fire, wounding the woman. Shes in the hospital now with non lifethreatening injuries zblfrmgs a deadly crash on 680 this morning. The Highway Patrol says a bigrig drove off the highway, through a fence and hit a tree. It happened on southbound 680. Police say as the truck was veering off the road, it clipped the car on the right shoulder of the interstate. The people in that car were not hurt. No word on what caused the driver of the bigrig to lose control. Tomorrow marks the start of a local murder trial that will be closely watched across the nation. Jose Garcia Zarate is accused of shooting and killing kate steinle on pier 14 back in july of 2014. The case quickly became a National Flash point because zarate is an undocumented immigrant with a criminal record who had been released from custody three weeks before the shooting. Whats more, the gun used in the crime belonged to a federal agent. Zarates defense team is likely to argue the shooting was an accident and that he didnt steal the gun but zarate found it. The nearly 400acre bear fire that has been burning in the Santa Cruz Mountains for nearly a week is now nearly 80 contained. More good news, all remaining evacuation orders still in place are set to be lifted tomorrow at 8 00 a. M. The fire started last monday. It has destroyed four structures. In a once enchanted neighborhood now covered in ash, leroy and donna always had a knack for making them feel loved. They were always there. They brought us cakes and a welcome to the neighborhood. Well, some people left without homes following the north bay wildfires are getting some temporary shelter from an unlikely place. A group is turning housing used for burning man into temporary housing for 75 people in sonoma county. Instead of sitting idle for another ten months, the converted shipping containers are now being sent to wine country. Next week, semi trucks will park at a lot in santa rosa. Theyre already equipped with bathrooms and showers. That is going to be a welcomed site there. We are going it turn our attention now to our meteorologist. Here with that check of forecast. Was allowed within the walls of the monetaries and found the meditation and praying seemed to work. We love the forest and the beauty of this place. Reporter the mountains of redwood valley, a place as spiritual as any cathedral. The silence of this place allows people to hear. Reporter sunday night from the mountain perch of this monastery, father damian heard an unusual sound. I got a very hard knock at the door. I looked out the window. Right below us here, i saw what looked like the sun rising from the earth. Reporter that sun was the rising flames tearing through neighborhoods just down the hill. I rang the biell. We gathered in the church. We prayed a prayer for times of trouble. Reporter so the brothers prayed and waited, and when they could, fled. All the houses has been burned up. Reporter a stones throw away. 23 bronx from this buddhist monastery escaped the flames down a treacherous back road. When we left, we werent sure we were going to have a monastery. Flames all around. Reporter below the two monasteries, fire chewed through 250 homes, killing eight people. For more than a week, no one knew if the two monasteries had survived. I said, well, what is there . Reporter neighborsisted through the ashes of their houses, residents of the two monasteries were allowed to come home. Today, prayers have returned. Different religions, one message of thanks. Were just grateful that we had a home to come home to. I was so sad that our neighbors didnt. Reporter though flames came within 1,000 feet of the monasteries, both were untouched. Quiet and still.
