Two miles west of highway 29. There you can see his water tender. It lost control and went over the edge of the road there. This happened around 6 50 this marking. This is one of the steepest roads in napa county. The driver came around this bend, his rig and empty tender rolled sideways, and landed upside down on the side of a very, very steep hill. There are skid marks on the road, but chp isnt sure that indicates he applied his breaks before the accident. They will perform a mechanical inspection to see if his equipment failed. They will investigate whether he was driving too fast and the also see if fatigue played a factor. Cal fire points out this is the eighth day of this fire fight here in wine country. Everyone is getting tired. There have been no breaks for the firefighters since the fires erupted last sunday evening. And so, yes, people are getting tired and that is a factor that we are aware of. We consider it in our daily activities and we work to sbat against that. Whether that had anything to do with this particular incident or not is unknown at this time. Reporter the coroner has arrived. So has chps major accident investigation team. It could be some time before the wreckers are able to pull the tender off the side of the hill. I dont know if you can see that chopper, but the nuns fire fight continues a couple of miles north of where were stand pentagon you might be able to see the smoke as well. Weve seen these helicopters ferrying back and forth. Burned just under 49,000 acres is now 50 contained. Cal fires optimistic because they dont have the winds that would be driving the fire out of control like we saw over a week ago in santa rosa. Theyre actually able to do back fires. The wineries below were talking about Robert Mondavi and a few others, those are still under advisory evacuations. Reporting live here in napa, bob redell, nbc bay area news. One of the fires still burning at this hour. Hard to see anything out there. So you know that there is still a lot of work going on down there right now. Well, its not just the flames that can be deadly, its also the air and the smoke, as you saw. Weve got news today of a family who say a 27yearold father died of breathing problems related to the smoke from the north bay fires. Nbc bay area reporter live with how this unfolded in such a short time. Reporter thats right, laura. You can see the thick layer of smoke sitting over santa rosa behind me. Thats pretty much how its been all over the bay area this past week. Now, one family says a young father who struggled with as tha in the past died yesterday after complaining of problems after breathing in that smoke. He sent a little video of the fire. Reporter sierra lopez is still wearing her boyfriends jacket and scrolling through his texts. 27yearold joshua died yesterday. It was wednesday night that he started complaining that he couldnt breathe because of the smoke. Reporter he used his inhaler, but thursday night his medicine wasnt enough. I looked over and he was purple and he was clenching and he just at that point, his head went back. His eyes opened. I looked at his fingertips and they wur blue. Reporter their 5yearold son nathan saw his mom who called 911 tried to do cpr on his son. He remembered everything. One, two, three, four, mommy. You always try to help your daddy. Most of them had respiratory illnesses. They have been admitted into the hospitals. Reporting live in santa rosa. Nbc bay area news. Just a sad story. Thank you, sharon. Well, she mentioned the dangers there. Air conditions that are floating around the bay area. Weve had that unhealthy, now even deadly air quality for the last week. Lets go to meteorologist kari hall who has been tracking all of this. Kari, hopefully the rain later in the week could help . Yeah, but its not coming soon enough. We have been dealing with this very dangerous air quality for about a week now. Even as we look out over San Francisco, some drifts of smoke moving by. Its another clear the air alert day. Unhealthy air quality for the north bay and even for the valleys, its unhealthy because the smoke we are seeing today with the calm winds are just kind of settling into the valley. Locally dense smoke, especially in the north bay with our winds blowing offshore. It does take some of the thickest smoke out of the bay area, south of marin county. As we go through the rest of the day, our winds stay nice and calm, but that does help keep that unhealthy air quality in the valleys as we go into tonight as well. Then well start to see a shift in our winds as we go into the day tomorrow. A s. O. A slight change in the wind direction makes all the difference in the air quality and we are going to have more shifts in the wind. Thats going to bring in more humidity and also tracking that chance of rain coming up in just a few minutes. Well, this is new video into our newsroom showing the destruction and people leaving the fountaingrove neighborhood in santa rosa, saw as they were being evacuated. The death toll stands at 41 people, that ins that water tender driver that bob redell told us about at the top of the newscast. The fires across the state have burned more than 213,000 acres, about 332 square miles. We did the math, thats more than two cities of san jose. More than 5700 homes and businesses have burned down. You can do it. The men made it out okay but they lost everything in the fire. A big sense of relief this morning in calistoga. It was a ghost town last week when the entire community faced a mandatory evacuation. Yesterday a bumpertobumper stream of cars lined highway 29 packed with families and their belongings, all relieved their town was mostly spared from the worst of the firestorm after an evacuation that left them fearing the worst. It was scary. 4 00 in the morning getting a knock on the door is very terrifying. And telling you that you have to leave and trying to get my kids up is very hard. And some of the calistogas major stores are already up and running. Other businesses will likely close for a few more days. So far, the nfl is not responding publicly to the collusion grievance filed by former San Francisco 49er quarterback colin kaepernick. He filed the grievance yesterday. It accuses nfl owners of depriving him of his Employment Rights and retaliating for advocating social justice. He opted out of his final contract to become a free agent. Since then, hes gone unsigned. He sparked controversy when he chose not to stand during the National Anthem in protest against police brutality. Kaepernicks attorney issued a statement, saying in part, Colin Kaepernicks goal has always been and remains to simply be treated by the league he performed at the highest level for and to return to the football playing field. An arbitrator will now decide whether to initiative proceedings. The president wants the nfl to force players to stand, and that demand may actually work against him. Scott mcgrew, the president may have actually turned this into a free speech issue. Reporter yeah, thats right. Good morning. Remember how the First Amendment works. Private companies like, say, professional football league, can forbid employees from saying something. So the nfl is likely well within its rights if it demands players stand up for the anthem. However, trump tweeted, why is the nfl getting massive tax breaks while at the same time disrespecting our anthem, flag and country . Change tax law. He brought the threat of Government Action into this and that totally changes how a court might see this issue if it went to court. Lawyers for players could reasonably argue the president s threat changes this from a private matter between an employer and employees to a First Amendment issue. Now, the nfl has not decided one way or the other what to do. On sunday, the raiders Marshawn Lynch sat during the anthem but stood up during a moment of silence for fire victims. Seven members of the 49ers kneeled, compared to 20 for last week. Back to you. As weve been tracking the weather right now. Its definitely a nice day in the area. Still, the concern is focus the on the north bay. Anyone who has breathing problems or a sensitivity to respiratory issues should still limit time outdoors. As weve seen at times some fresh breezes coming in, but also the still dangerous air quality for the north bay. As we take a live look outside in san rafael. At times we are seeing some clear blue skies, but also you have a hard time seeing the hills in the distance. Thats an indication that there is some smoke drifting by and some dangerous conditions as well. As we go through the rest of the day, temperatures feel nice and comfortable. Well, now were in the low 70s in the south bay. San jose and in livermore, were at 72 degrees. Oakland now at 68 degrees, and 67 degrees in napa. It was a very chilly start. But it warms up quickly over the next couple of hours. Well see those high temperatures in cupertino up to 86 degrees. 88 degrees in gilroy today. East bay will also have temperatures much warmer this afternoon. Reaching into the upper 80s, danville there, 87, oakland, 83 degrees for the peninsula will be into the low 80s and San Francisco also reaching into the low 80s in the mission district. Outer sunset at 76 degrees in mill valley today. Expect a high of 85. Santa rosa will be up to 88 degrees. As we look at that temperature trend for Sonoma County, once again reaching up to 88 and just look at how quickly we do warm up by 1 00. Be in the upper 70s and upper 80s just a couple of hours after that. It does make it difficult for everyone out there workingand, of course, for the firefighters wearing all of that equipment out there battling those wildfires. In napa county, more of the same. Will be in the upper 80s this afternoon. The good thing is that we do have the very light wind so its not really forceful wind moving through and fanning those flames. But then as we go into the day tomorrow, more humidity, our winds shift direction and it brings in an onshore flow, which transport in a lot of that humid ocean air over the bay area and cools down our temperatures. By thursday, well be watching out for that chance of rain. Moves in late thursday night, into early friday, and that is definitely some positive news that we had in the weather front. Here looking at that chance of rain that we hadnt seen all month long. And some of the models putting down some decent amounts, not as much as we need, but, hey, we do have something here. Up to 0. 3 of an inch, and then lesser amounts as you head farther to the south. On the average in the month of october. Over an inch and a half of rain in santa rosa. Doesnt look like well see that much, at least not in the near term, but will start to see the showers moving in by the end of the week. Also some cooler temperatures on the way and for the inland areas, expect it to dip down for the high, 67 degrees. Before it gradually warms up for the weekend. From what we understand, they were cleaning some type of chemicals on the platform, but obviously the victims of this fire are in the hospital right now. And simply put, were talking about a neighborhood destroyed. And the neighborhood were in right now is the area in santa rosa where they have lifted up the evacuation orders. Lets take you over here. Were in someones driveway. Youre seeing the damage here, the rubble, the structure of what was once a home now completely gone. As i mentioned, the evacuation orders have been lifted in certain parts of santa rosa, including where were standing right here in this area of santa rosa and our camera crews were actually in place yesterday when these residents saw their homes for the first time, really arriving in a neighborhood they no longer recognized. Theyre all gone. They look just like the house across the street, just leveled. Reporter now that was dan, who was there to comfort his girlfriend valerie, who was just learning that she was about one of the few dozen homeowners on the street that were standing on on Carriage Lane in santa rosa who lost her home as a result of these fires. Now, the areas in santa rosa have had the evacuation orders lifted. Folks are going to be coming back to their homes or whats left of their homes if there is any left this morning. Residents like valerie saw that damage facetoface for the first time. Seeing it in the darkness of the night. She said amidst all of this, shes feeling a sense of relief. Its encouraging. Its still going to be a warm day but we did start out with such Cool Temperatures that we are gradually working our way into the upper 80s for the inland areas. Still have a lot of 60s here and our temperatures have been on the cool side, but we are right on par with where we were yesterday at this time. Even a couple of degrees warmer in a few spots, while cooler, specially along the coastline. So it is going to be a day well above average, reaching into the upper 80s in santa rosa, oakland up to 82 degrees and some mid80s for the south bay. Today, once again, the last day of the very warm air before we have a shift in the winds and thats going to help transport a lot more humidity and cooler air all across the bay area.
