There are concerns they may need more Evacuation Centers. As they open, we will let you know about that. Tom is in santa rosa. What is going on where you are right now. Reporter look, this is how crazy it is. Theres a fire kicking up next to the hospital where we are right now, right where the bus was going to go. It swung around with all those patients to the other side of the parking lot here, heading out to the north now. They were trying to go out to the south. A fire has started here next to kaiser perm. The fire is extremely dangerous. We were in town and another spot fire kicked upright here. This situation is changing so quickly, this is, i have been on a lot of fires and i have never seen anything like this before. This bus, the one bus we showed you earlier is full of patients and heading out, as i said, trying to find an evacuation location. Finley Community Center is full. I dont know if you heard that, but there was another explosion just not too far from us. We dont know what these explosions are coming from, whether they are cars or possibly a fuel tank, a gas, you know, some sort of gas line. You can see the flames kicking up behind these vehicle that is are driving into the hospital parking lot right now. Look at that. People are actually running for their lives. We have people in wheelchairs getting pushed out of here. We have people with res praters. This is a situation like pardon . We are looking at them bring a person on a bed. Do you know where they were coming from . Reporter they have a patient on a bed, right. They have a patient on a bed with i. V. S hooked up that they are bringing out right now. This is an extremely volatile situation. As i said, nothing i was on the yellowstone fire. I havent seen anything like this as far as being close to structures and close to a Large Population of people. Nothing like this before, but fires kicking up in town. We have heard of them blowing up all over the forest, but this is a situation like emergency crews here probably have never seen before. They are just scrambling in every direction. I can imagine how hard it is to keep on top of this. I cant imagine. This is heart breaking to see, this hospital. You can see the fire burning so close. To get the people out, do they take defensive mode to protect the hospital . Can they get all the people out . Are there firefighters around that you see . Reporter we do not see another bus coming in right now. I dont know how quickly they are able to get them out. I see a man in a wheelchair to my right. They are going to load him into a car. I dont know if they are putting that person in the bed in the back of a truck, but they are trying to get people out here as quickly as they can. Any vehicle it looks like they can get them in. That tells you how extremely dangerous the situation is. The fire moving closer to where we are. We feel relatively safe right here because there is so much parking lot between us and the fire. But, we dont know whats on the other side of that fire, what kind of structures are there, how many people might be over there. This is this is just a crazy situation. A nurse or doctor just ran by me, getting to their vehicle now and getting out. A lot of people reporter im seeing medical personnel running to their vehicles and getting out of here. I was going to say, i see a lot of people running to their cars. Are they told to leave in their cars or are they just deciding to do this on their own . Reporter okay. She looks like shes pulling up to get patients out. Bringing her own car over. Okay. Reporter yeah, pardon me on that. She is not evacuating. She is helping get patients out in her own vehicle, it looks like. Wow you see the desperate need there. Reporter its situation unlike is that, where that spot fire is that we can see in the distance, is that an sbreentran . Are they coming from the parking lot . Im trying to get a gauge of where that is. Reporter im going to walk to another position to see if i can see what that is. It looks like it is just at the end of the parking lot. You know, off the highway. Just east of the highway here and it looks like it is burning in some trees right now. Trees and brush. I do not see structures involved from my location here. The smoke is so thick, you cant see through it. On the other side of those trees, through the trees, i can see that fire is not just a small fire burning back there. It looks like it is actually spreading farther to the west from the location where you are seeing the flames right there. I dont know how far to the west it goes because the trees are so thick. People are upset. We have had people yelling at us as they are trying to get one man bringing his pregnant wife out of here a few minutes ago. He actually started yelling at us. You can imagine, people are really upset, trying to get their loved ones out of here. He told us his house already burned. I talked to an elderly gentleman when i first arrived on the scene. He is afraid his house is burned down because it was so close. This man is yelling at us, i guess. I know. I know. Obviously reporter people are really upset. Of course. The tensions are high. You have sick people being brought out. We want to tell people, stay with me, thom. This is the Kaiser Hospital in santa rosa off 101 and bicentennial way. The hospital is being evacuated. You can see the glow of the fire in the distance there. That is how close the fire is to this hospital. We have literally seen them pull people out on gurneys, rolling them through with ivs, people in walkers, people in wheelchairs loaded into ordinary personnel cars to get them out of the hospital. Like you said, people pulling up in their own cars to get people to safety as well. The spot fire was actually the area one of those evacuation buses was going to travel, but they had to find another way to get out of that hospital, as you can see there. People just trying to get patients into what looks like the Health Care Personnel cars. Whatever they can do to get people out. To get them out of the hospital. It is a threat right now because of that fire, as it spreads. The spot fire there in the parking lot. This is one of many fires burning in sonoma and napa county. Look at them run in with wheelchairs to escort them out. We dont know the capacity of how many are in the hospital. Icu, babies, a pregnant woman. These are the people they have been able to take out and put in personal cars. Its heart breaking. The first set of people we saw, they were able to walk out, some with walkers. They were able to walk out and we saw someone pulling someone out on a bed with ivs, trying to get them to safety, the best way they can. This is a scene we are likely seeing at other hospitals in the area. Thom, tell us what you are seeing now. Seems like a lot more activity going on where you are right now. Reporter there is. We are seeing all kinds of cars pulling up. It looks like a lot of Hospital Personnel are bringing their personal vehicles up here and getting people out. A lot of people getting heated. You can imagine why. You really have to feel for these people. They have loved ones in here, the Hospital Personnel are caring for these people. They have that connection with them. They are very concerned about the health and safety of these people. A lot of them, you know, already with respiratory issues where the smoke can just weaken their system or, you know, effect their lungs if they have respiratory issues, heart conditions. This is an extremely, extremely tense and as i said before, volatile situation here with the fire kicking up so close to us. All around us, really. There are fires burning in this area. As you said earlier, at least, you know, a dozen or more fires. We dont know where they are taking these evacuees, but we see more police vehicles, more sheriff vehicles coming in here to assist and get the patients out. People are just scrambling everywhere. We have patients and medical personnel, we see an rn coming by us now, doing what they can to get these patients out of here. This is a volatile situation, as i said, but also you can see how this community is already coming together to help each other out. Earlier, we were talking to one of our stringer photographers who live up here. He said he saw people and he was participating in this going doortodoor, knocking on doors and telling people to get out of their homes because a lot of people were sleeping when these fires started. So, this situation is changing every second now, you guys. I cant imagine for people watch thag may have loved ones in that hospital right now, we are trying to gather information as to how you can find out their safety as well as their evacuating Kaiser Hospital. This is up in santa rosa. 101 and bicentennial way this morning. Thom, we are going to keep you there. It is a busy situation there as you continue to gather more information now. It is heart breaking to see this. I have never seen anything like it. The spot fire that happened there in the hospital parking lot. Its something caused by the strong winds in the area. We want to go to meteorologist kari hall. You have been tracking the strong winds in the area. That has actually forced a lot of embers to spread to many areas. Yeah tharks is exactly what we feared on friday when the high Wind Warnings went up and ike. High fire warnings went upstarting for sunday and exactly what we expected, unfortunately, happened. This is really bad. You see the wind gusts at 30, 40, 50 miles an hour and we have very warm temperatures. Right now, 69 degrees. We are going to stay in the mid60s and a lot of smoke. I want to get you oriented to what we are seeing here on the satellite imagery with all the smoke that drips across much of napa and sonoma counties. We get a closer look of where that fire started on highway 29 at 128, north of calistoga. The smoke is drifting to the south. The winds are blowing north to south. You can see by the gray shaded area, a lot of rugged terrain. If you have been through the silverado trail and vineyards, you can see trees on the road. The smoke is drifting from that other wildfire south of atlas into downtown napa as well as parts of the delta. The winds are going to stay strong through at least the next five or six hours, creating very dangerous conditions not only for the residents there, but the people fighting the fire into the rest of the afternoon. Very low humidity as well. As we have seen, the relative humidity only at 13 to 17 across much of the north bay. Very dry, very windy. You will see the winds calming down, i give it around noon, later on today. Mike, you are tracking what is happening in the north bay. I want to stick to the traffic and weather is linked together. You talk about the high winds. You showed where the smoke was around 128 and 129. Oss s here, here and over here. Look over here, the road weather index registering a big change. Theres a lot of gusty wind going on right here. Napa and fairfield. One of the fires is over here, affecting 121. Highway 12 has closures. Heard about lakeville highway for highway 37 and the big fire that was going on right by the freeway, 101 at bicentennial. Thats where thom jenson is. We have closures at hopper and by centennial. The hopper fire jumped over the trees. Thom is reporting there. Be very careful through the area. Chp said if you dont need to go through the area for evacuation, avoid it completely. As far as the big roadways, getting through the fire, we need to let the equipment get through. Everything is moving well on the freeways, as long as you abide by the traffic control. Sunlight is coming up. If you dont have to travel through the north bay, south of the Golden Gate Bridge is fine. Its up here, napa, sonoma, calistoga, we are looking at the areas with traffic control. Avoid these areas if you can today. Clear the way when you see those trucks coming through. They are going to have a lot of aide headed that way. Thank you, mike. Lets check in with bob redell right now. We have been showing the pictures from sonoma county. Bob is in napa county, an evacuation sent at the crosswalk church. Reporter just off 1st street and highway 29 in napa. We have the chaplain fir the napa city and county. How many people do you have here . About 350 people. Reporter they have all been told to evacuate, they must evacuate . Yes, absolutely. Reporter the fire started in the atlas area. You have been listening to the twoway. We have heard 1015 fires, we dont have a confirmation. I couldnt confirm that, no. Reporter what vibe are you getting . First of all, Law Enforcement guys, police department, Napa Fire Department guys, both county and city are doing a great job and its a real battle out there for them. I know they are putting themselves in dangerous positions, evacuating all the families. There are family that is dont want to evacuate. Its a big deal and dispatchers are doing a great job. Reporter if someone is home and sitting in an area that should be evacuated, your message is what . Get out of there. If they need to be evacuated, they need to get out of there for their own safety. It may be difficult for some people, particularly elderly people. Pay attention to Law Enforcement and get out of there. Reporter i talked to some people off camera. It surprised them and me, too, is how fast this is happening. Yes. Reporter how it jumped. Im not sure how the fires got started. Its possible because of the sparks, the wind. High winds right now. So, thats going to impact the fire. I just hope we dont have it as bad as oakland hills. Reporter as far as the support, you have cops set up in the gymnasium, what else . We have water, of course. Food. We are taking care of their animals, things of that sort. So, excuse me, just about everything they need, at this point, for immediate care, we are doing that for them. Through red cross, the red cross staff is doing a great job. Reporter your main role as chaplain . Support the individuals that are here. Theres several of us here that are chaplains, but the main role is to take care of this whole facility with red cross and take care of the people. Napa Police Called us out. Take care of the individuals who come here. We didnt know if theres injured people. There are people here crying. They dont know if they are going back to a home or not. Reporter right. We can help stabilize them for the officers and deputies to take care of the families, drop them off and get back online. Reporter 350 people. We have a little bit here. We probably need to start moving people toward napa city college. Thats the next Evacuation Center. Officially, i havent heard, but some people thought that. I believe the next one is napa city college. Reporter okay. Best of luck. Im glad you are safe. Thanks for speaking with us. You bet. Reporter chaplain lee shaw is with napa city and county. To give you a sense of what it looks like around here. I was talking to one lady over here, who was evacuated last night. When she first saw the fire was 10 00. She lives up in the hills. Its another wildfire. Then, as she was going to bed or going down for the night, she couldnt see the flames. Maybe they have it contained. A couple hours later, she received a phone call saying, hey, you have to get out of here. This is getting pretty serious. Let me hey there. Can we talk to you real quick . Im bob. We didnt meet earlier. Whats your name . Maggie. Reporter i was telling them, you saw the fire earlier, didnt think it was going to be a big deal, then what happened . Yesterday, i came home and saw the fire at the resort. My house is at the top of the hill. I did see the flames. An hour later, the flames kind of, i couldnt see them anymore. They contained it, right . Then i went to bed. I got a call at 3 00 a. M. Reporter from your sister . Yeah. She said i think you are going to get evacuated. It take as minute to, you know, hit. Yeah, really . Then the electricity was down in the house. Reporter do you think your house will be okay . Do you know . You know, its hard to know right now. The fire was less than a mile away. Reporter okay. It was red. Smoke. Reporter thank you for talking to us. Best of luck. 1 of 350 people here. If you need to get somewhere, come here off first street and highway 29. Laura . Do you know what the capacity is . They said 350 people and talking about an additional Evacuation Center. Reporter we havent thought about that, yet. We dont know what the capacity is. Whether its another 50. As you heard the chaplain saying, they are looking at opening up napa city college is what he was hearing. It appears they have room here. Well obviously get the situation out if they open napa city college. Thanks for that update. Of patt to give an update of the map showing the evacuation area. This is from the citys website. We also have, you can see that area, wide range area thats being affected by these fires. We have seen so many things affected from buildings to hospitals. Oh, exactly. We are talking about the Kaiser Hospital. Look at the map there, to the right of 101 off bicentennial way, that is where the Kaiser Hospital is being evacuated. I wanted to show these heart breaking pictures coming out. These are people that were in the icu, inside the hospital. They are still on their gurneys, connected to ivs with the staff from the hospital wheeling the people out. They are taking them to waiting ambulances. We have seen other people in walkers, in wheelchairs. Seeing them boarded into buses. Not only that, the people literally were being put into cars. Some of the personnel staff at Kaiser Hospital. They were wheeling them and putting them in their cars to get them away because of the glow. Thats the fire that is burning so close. One of the fires in the area, they were reporting, went to where the fire started. Thats where the fire was, as you saw there in the parking lot. That was actually one of the evacuation routes they were going to take one of the buses filled with people through that. Right now, we are joined back by thom. Thom, update us on whats going on there, now. Reporter well, i can tell you, we know where these people are going now. They are going to Veterans Memorial center on maple in santa rosa. That Evacuation Center is becoming a pseudohospital, itself. Obviously, filling up quickly. They are bringing hundreds of people out, patients out of this hospital and of course, sutter hospital, as we said earlier, being evacuated as well. We see people standing around with walkers and res praters waiting for a ride, loading the stretcher up on to an ambulance to take them to the Veterans Memorial where they are going to be treated by nurses. Ivs hooked up to this person. Several people having to get that person loaded. Excuse me, the smoke is heavy out here. Getting that person loaded up into the ambulance. We have seen ambulances from all over coming in. Sonoma raceway had a ambulance come in and pick up somebody in a stretcher or bed just a short time ago and they took off. That bus that we saw loaded before, as i said, was filled to capacity and it is now going to Veterans Memorial and we already had evacuees going there from around the city. They are looking to open up more Evacuation Centers. We do not know where all of those are, yet. Well try to get those centers for people as soon as we can. That is, of course, Vital Information for these people who are trying to get somewhere. We have heard from a couple people out here already. One man telling us that not only was he trying to get his wife out of here, he was afraid that his house had already burned down. Another man, extremely angry. You know, rightfully so, upset about his home burning as hes getting his pregnant wife and child out of the hospital. This situation is just incredibly sad, incredibly volatile. As i said so many times this morning. People just dont know where they are going, dont know, you know, whats happening to their home. Some of these people live in the area. They dont know whats happened to their home. Of course, with 15 maybe fires burning around the area, you have to feel for these people. All of them, already having Health Conditions and this cannot help. You know, they need their rest, et cetera and now they are being rushed out of the hospital. It is heart breaking to see, est alone the smoke in the area as well. We wish the best for all these people. Thank you, thom. We know you can stay there as long as you can because there is a need to evacuate as well. Coverage continues online. We have an update of the list of Evacuation Centers. Head to www. Nbcbayarea.
