Sunnyvale. The officer in this officerinvolved shooting did fear for his life when he had a gi gunpointed at him and thats why he had to fire several rounds. They say one of them dropped a highcapacity magazine during the chase and one of the suspects got away and officers cornered the other behind a commercial complex and thats when the officers shot and killed him. Just before 7 00 and people feeling it all over the bay area. Stephanie trong is live. Very light shaking and not enough for any structural damage and the u. S. Geological departme department, everything is fine and everything intact, and the message is to be reprayered. You felt it, nick, huh . Yes, i did. Coffee talk centered on one thing all morning, the 4. 0 magnitude quake struck at 6 49 recorded by the seismograph. I was deep asleep and boom, woke me up and i looked over to my left and my mirror was just shaking violently like that, and i have to make a move quick if this continues past this ten seconds. Relatively shallow, about five kilometers. Most earthquakes are deeper than that. So that means that people in the proximity near this earthquake probably felt more intense shaking than would be felt for a magnitude 4. 0. There were no reports of damage, just minor to moderate, and amy showed us these photos of a map and model train cars that fell to the ground. More people reported everything stayed put which had them more confused than anything. I thought it was a quake. And one of my customers came in and i said oh, that was an earthquake . When i got to bart and saw the delay and the lines then i knew. The last time there was a significant earthquake was a. 0 in 1968, 147 years ago. We see it produces earthquakes about every 150 years. That means the next big one is due at any given moments. We have these as reminders that we live in earthquake country and should do everything we need to do to be prepared. Im from michigan and ive been here three years and its not real to me. Maybe ill move out of here before that happens. Reporter so theres that or the usgs says have a Communications Plan ready and on that note, the usgs says have a plan in place, know the seismic resilience of your Childs School and other buildings like your house and office, of course, as well. Live in oakland, nbc bay area. Thanks, steph. From earthquakes and fires, developing news in the Pacific Northwest where firefighters in oregon and washington battling wildfires on all sides. Thousands of people have forced to leave their homes. More than 100 large fires are burning out of control in those two states. A level 5 fire alert is in effect. That means all federal firefighters are on call. The National Guardsmen called in to make water drops, as well. Here in the bay area were also feeling the effects of dozens of wildfires burning throughout california in a different way. If you were outside at all this weekend you probably did more than feel the extreme heat and you probably noticed hazy skies as well and that has prompted a spare the air alert today. Thats what it looked like over San Francisco and this is what it looks like live over san jossy and tonight is another hot one. Meteorologist carrie hall joins us with the microclimate forecast. When i walked to my car this morning it was 70 degrees. And i walked out with a jacket on and i thought i dont even need this. It is warm outside and the temperatures continue to go up and we also have poor air quality because of this High Pressure and these very hot temperatures, and the High Pressure kind of produces the sinking air. It produces a high amount of pressure on the earth and thats why we call it that. And the pollutants build up. So for us right now its smoke and being carried from a northerly wind from those wildfires that are coming from the north and every day it gets worse, meaning that we have more of a milky white sky. We dont have much of a blue sky and that wont happen until we get a nice, onshore flow to help carry the smoke away from the bay area. So we do still once again have the spare the air alert today, and it will improve by tomorrow, but until then, if youre outside, if you have breathing problems you want to limit the Time Outdoors and try to get things done either early in the morning or later in the evening. It is still hot out there. We have to deal with the highs over 100 degrees and the High Pressure will be weakening as we go through the week and the onshore flow will push the smoke to the east and were looking forward to that and it happens on wednesday and ill talk more about that coming up in the forecast. As you wait for that get a personalized forecast on nbc bay areas app, free for iphone and android devices. Happening right now, crews are laying down new sod at levi stadium again. As we take a look from tiburon, you see the visibility is low, looking across the bait and its because of all of that smoke that weve had to deal with and look at these high temperatures from yesterday. In santa rosa it was 104 degrees, new records set across the bay and it was 90 degrees in San Francisco and oakland, 93, livermore, 106 degrees and a look at even more records and there were so many i couldnt put them all along one board and it was 101 in napa, concord, 104 and some of these records were broken by almost 10 degrees in some spots, so were going well above where we should be for this time of year and right now were at 82 degrees in the south bay and temperatures are heating up and fast. It is 77 degrees now in the peninsula and the east bay is at 83 degrees. San francisco, 69, expect a high of 82 this afternoon and in the east bay it will be 90 degrees and peninsula 87 and 100 degrees in the south bay and as you can see, this heat is not yet letting up and it is 62 degrees in ocean beach and there are some spots where you can still go to cool off, but compare that to san jose where it is now, 86 degrees and as temperatures continue to go up and looking at the win forecast coming in from the northwest, fairly light wind speeds and here we are at noon and we have wind at 10 miles an hour and it does become an onshore flow and you can tell by the arrows that the winds will be picking up by 15 to 20 miles an hour and a fairly weak onshore flow and that allow for the temperatures to heat up into the 90s and even 100 degrees in spots and High Pressure will be weakening and the sea breeze will be strengthening as we go through the weekend that will help this heat to back off just a little bit and looking at the trend for los gatos today reaching 100 degrees and 93 tomorrow. You can see the improvement as we go through the week and also well see that also in San Francisco from 82, today to 68 degrees by wednesday well be returning to some weather thats about normal for this time of year and slightly warmer air in time for the weekend and nothing like we had to deal with this past weekend. So much welcome news after dealing with those sizzling temperatures and some people didnt even have airconditioning or power for that matter. So something a little bit more manageable. Courtney reagan says the fashion trend is picking up steam just in time for back to school shopping. Part of targets back to school messaging insists denim is a School Supply and this year the retailer might be right. While the backtoschool season is historically one of the most important for denim, last year sales of jeanswear dropped dramatically as athleticwear sales soared, leading many to declare the death of denim, but now there are signs that denim isnt so dead after all. Investment bank fbr conducted an Online Search survey and found the number of consumers searching for denim online increased 5 compared to a drop last year and analysts say its because manufacturers have reinvented the back to school staple. This is denims way of fighting back. Theyre adding more Synthetic Fibers to the denim not just cotton. Its particularly good news for retailers betting on back to school. Millennials represent the largest dollar segment of jean sales and the group is showing renewed interest in denim after years of skinny jeans being the it denim trend, retailers like American Eagle and abercrombie are turning to a new style. But unlike the athleisure Clothing Market which more think is a lifestyle switch than just the fad, the denim resurgence may be more short lived. You all felt it this morning and berkeley, as well and we even had reports up to the north bay. It was just a 4. 0. We didnt have any major reports of damage there, and it was on to hayward and weve had about seven aftershocks since then and now as we take a look at sunol and it is hot and dry. It is now 90 degrees in the east bay and we havent even made it to noon yet. Check out these numbers and it is 92 degrees in pleasanton, danville, 91 degrees and Discovery Bay 89 degrees and oakland right now is at 74 degrees and a look at the Bigger Picture and you see these temperatures in the 70s, 80s and yes, 90s there and we have the smoke drifting in from those wildfires in the north and High Pressure which is also causing this heat is producing a cap and pushing that smoke down to the ground. So the pollutants build up each day with this northerly wind and it will continue to get worse until tomorrow when we get an onshore flow to help carry some of the smoke farther out to the east and it will be much better by wednesday. We do still have that spare the air alert especially in areas where the where you see the red here. A hot start to the week and still seeing those 90s and highs over 100 degrees across the bay and by the middle of the week youll get the return of the onshore flow as High Pressure weakens and it will be cooler especially inland and that smoke will be pushed off to the east. So a look at the trend were expecting through the rest of the week. 93 today in san jose and look at wednesday, 84 degrees when the average is 83 and its looking much better by the end of the week. By friday at about 83 degrees and also in the trivalley after hitting 103 degrees today. Youll have more seasonable weather starting wednesday and thursday and it looks like it was a warm weekend and it was not like dealing with the last couple of days and in the trivalley, you can expect a high of 87 degrees on saturday in the south bay and about 90 degrees.
