Sheriffs deputies are pressuring their boss the union has just filed an official grievance against sheriff ross carimi. This stems from the kate steinle murder. Mark matthews is at city hall this evening. Mark, this sheriff is well accustomed to controversy. Reporter he is. And hes been under fire and apparently, according to the timing of this grievance from his sheriffs deputies they want to keep him on the hot seat. Critics have been hammering a point for two weeks now that the shooting on pier 14 that took the live of kate steinle would have never happened if the suspected shooter had been deported to mexico rather than being released from county jail. The sheriff has been defending the release for days saying it was required by the citys sanctuary city policy. And for that he has come under considerable fire. The latest blast from his own sheriffs deputies who say in this grievance, the sheriffs refusal to cooperate compromises the safety sworn personnel, citizens and those who merely come to visit San Francisco. In march, forbid deputies from calling i. C. E. When a jail inmate was to be released. The deputies grievance demands the department rescind that sheriff directive. The sheriff told reporters today, he expected it. I think theyre trying to capitalize on the fact this is an Election Year and they support one of their own, my opponent in the sheriffs race so a purely predictable move frankly. Reporter this week the sheriff and San Franciscos mayor have been going back and forth over the policy of refusing i. C. E. Requests to hold inmates for deportation. The mayor critical of the refusal to pick up the phone and advise i. C. E. When an undocumented inmate was going to be released. The sheriff insisting that is both within the letter and the spirit of the citys sanctuary ordinance. I actually invite the mayor, encourage him to come with me and the City Attorney before the board of supervisors, so that we can have an open and transparent discussion. Reporter today, the mayor said hes standing by criticism of the sheriff. We wanted the Sheriffs Deputies Association to speak out on this publicly, and its a bit of a headscratcher that on the day that they make this grievance public, there was nobody from the Sheriffs Union to talk to us about it. Nbc bay areas Christie Smith is live in San Francisco with more on this battle. Christie. Reporter yeah thats right. And bike advocates, what they think is too many Police Resources are being channelled in an unusual direction around the park station. That far too much emphasis is being put on enforcement that targets cyclists. Routes like the San FranciscoBicycle Coalition where we checked in today, and they believe the focus needs to be on what has been identified as some of the deadliest traffic behaviors, things like unsafe speed among drivers. The city has a goal known as vision zero to reduce deaths in traffic collisions and cyclists say that cracking down on that most dangerous behavior is critical to achieve that. But police say they are still focusing on it. But this is a campaign to also find cyclists who are violating rules of the road and that it is not at odds with vision zero. We spoke with cyclists and a police spokesperson. Once in a while you get the right turns without a signal and you have to very be on edge and kind of be like you know like what the heck you know. Like youre not signalling, youre not giving you know distracted drivers contribute to that. A lot of it is also complaintdriven. We have a lot of people that are on their bikes, a lot of numbers have increased in the city. Which is great. But we want people to also abide by the rules. Reporter according to police if they do see a violation right now theyre giving cyclists a warning, at least for now. Then citations may come down the road during the enforcement period. The Bike Coalition is circulating an online petition to try and steer enforcement back toward datadriven enforcement and away from what they see as a misguided use of Police Resources.
