So far, no arrests, though santa clara deputies are keeping an eye on the encampment. Hi everybody. Thanks for joining us. Im dionne lim. The protesters at stanford and colleges across the country are demanding their universities end their investments in Companies Involved in the israelhamas war. Abc seven News Reporter lena howland dives into that demand. And what companies protesters are targeting. Reporter a cardboard cutout of Stanford University president Richard Sackler with blood on his hands and signs calling for divestment are greeting newly admitted students at stanfords spring admit weekend. We want Stanford University to pull all of its funding from companies that are helping facilitate israeli war crimes. Its unclear how many students slept here friday night, but more than two dozen tents are still set up on the campuss white plaza. Theyve been here since thursday for what demonstrators are calling a Peoples University for palestine. This demonstration, drawing support from this parent of an incoming Political Science student here visiting from georgia. So it appealed me. Lets go. I have a couple of hours and offer them whatever help they i can do for them being a parent. Adrianna a stanford junior and spokesperson for the group, says there aligned in solidarity with other schools nationwide. Theyre demanding stanford separate itself from any companies or organizations advancing military efforts in the israelhamas war. And theyre calling out three wellknown companies stanford has ties with lockheed martin, stanford has ties with chevron with hp, and all three of those companies, are hurting the palestinian people. In a statement, the university said. In 2015, the board declined a proposal to divest of Certain Companies doing business in israel. They say that decision has remained in place ever since. They also say it doesnt impact stanfords endowment, which the University Website shows is 36. 5 billion as of last august. Stanfords statement continues to say the universitys endowment has no direct holdings in Israeli Companies or direct holdings in defense contractors, beyond small exposures resulting from passive funds that track broad indexes, such as the s p 500. But students say they want more transparency. Stanford refuses to disclose its, investments like where it puts its money, and thats another thing we would like the school to do in palo alto. Lena howland, abc seven news. A similar encampment continues at uc berkeley. A group of cyclists rode by today as part of their propalestinian demonstration through the streets of the east bay. Organizers tell us theyre riding in solidarity with a para cycling team out of gaza. That stopped competing during the israelhamas war up in far Northern California, cal poly, humboldt is going remote for the rest of the school year, as student protesters occupy buildings on campus. The University Set a deadline last night for them to leave or face arrest. Some of the demonstrators left peacefully, but others are still barricaded. The University Says vandalism and theft are happening across campus with millions of dollars worth of damage. Cal poly humboldt has also found at least two locations with antisemitic graffiti. Are you in riot gear . I dont see no right here. Some universities arent waiting for students to leave on their own. Today, police at Northeastern University in boston detained about 100 people as they cleared the protest. There northeastern Officials Say the protesters were using anti semitic slurs and they will not tolerate hate on campus. The University Says anyone with a student id that was detained would be released and face discipline from the college instead of criminal charges. New Yorks Columbia University is at the center of this College Protest movement. The situation there is calmer today after a tense standoff where campus demonstrators earlier had this week unite. City administrators are still negotiating with students, trying to get them to close the encampment. Protesters say they are not expecting an update until monday, and we do have continuing coverage of the campus protests across the country and here in the bay area. Citizens from one oakland neighborhood plagued by sex trafficking are calling for more help from city hall, mayor shengtao and Alameda County District Attorney pam price were there for todays rally today at 13th avenue in international boulevard. Neighbors and Community Groups say the area is seeing an increase in prostitution, often involving underage girls. They asked city leaders to do more than just make arrests. Will you lead a multijurisdiction effort to fund, design and launch Regional Human Trafficking Awareness Campaign to increase Public Awareness of the impact of sex trafficking on victims and consequences for those who buy sex . Todays press conference took place just a few blocks from Saint Anthonys k8 school, where more than a year ago, the abc7 news iteam shot video of women who appeared to be sex workers soliciting right outside the school in the middle of the day. The city says when they put up barriers near Saint Anthonys, the prostitution and trafficking just moved down the street. His death sparked protests and vigils, but no criminal charges. Today marks one year since a Security Guard shot and killed blanco brown at a walgreens in San Francisco. The guard suspected 24 year old brown of shoplifting, and in the scuffle, the guard shot brown. He later said his life felt threatened. The San Francisco District Attorneys office didnt charge the guard, with browns killing, saying there was clear evidence it was selfdefense. The young womens freedom center, where brown worked as an intern, is honoring him today. Executive director julia arroyo shared a statement saying in part, quote, blancos life was worth so much more than what it was taken for in the face of adversity. He was resilient and courageous. He fearlessly fought for the rights and dignity of trans people, and left an ever lasting mark on y wdfc and the movement as a whole. The people hardest hit by californias Home Insurance crisis could be facing a new blow. The head of californias Insurance Plan of last resort says rates are probably about to skyrocket for many homeowners. The states fair plan is their only option. It is pricey, though thousands of dollars a year more than other plans for people in high wildfire risk areas, the head of the fair plan told a state committee this week. That problem is going to get worse. Our rates are going to go up, no question about it. If we can put that cost of reinsurance in there, if we can put use catastrophe modeling, just like the voluntary market, our rates are going to go up. The head of the fair plan wants those same options, so the plan can have enough money to cover losses in a bad fire. Happening now, two major road closures impacting drivers as caltrans tries to make repairs. Nine miles of 680 southbound are closed through pleasanton between 580 connector and koopman road. That closure is scheduled to last until monday. Caltrans is working on road repairs in the area. Anybody who is familiar with that part of the road knows that theres potholes and all kinds of problems, and so right now, im happy to say we are on track to reopen on time, on schedule. All right. That is optimistic. News 680 is rescheduled to reopen at 4 a. M. On monday in the northbound. Westbound highway 37 is also closed all weekend. Caltrans is repairing the pavement from vallejo to sears point this is the second weekend in a row that road is shut down. There were brutal delays on the detour route last week. You may remember with some people waiting 90 minutes to go 13 miles, the closures are expected to be lifted by 4 a. M. Monday. The Chinese Government signed an agreement to send two more bears to the san diego zoo. That deal, you may remember, was originally announced in february. These are pictures of the male and female pandas themselves. Their names are yun chuan and chen bao. San diego last had pandas five years ago. The zoo will now begin to upgrade enclosures so the animals have a larger living space once everything is approved. The two bears could arrive by the end of the summer. The pandas coming to San Francisco are expected to arrive in 2025. Three new ones in San Francisco, joined officials together in the japantown Community Today to break ground on the peace plaza renovation project. Japantown having to go through the internment, having to go through world war one that decimated this community was such a huge hit on this community, but it rose again also rose when i had a chance. It was challenged by redevelopment and it rose again. And to me, this community is so special to me. The project sets out to transform the historic plaza to hold its place in the city as a community hub. It will have new paving plants, seating and maintenance.
