Man did not let go. And he is safe tonight. Thanks to the heroism and expertise of the Sonoma County sheriffs office, they pulled the man from the cliff overlooking the pacific near the battery alexander trail in the golden gate. National recreation area, near rodeo beach. As abc seven News Reporter ryan curry explains, rescuers say this was one of the most precarious rescues theyve ever done. They dont let go, man. Dont let go, okay . Clinging to life. If this man lets go, it could be devastating. Why is your left hand in here, brother . Unfortunately, we lose. Probably 1 to 2 people per year falling off these cliffs. Rescuers coming from a helicopter, lifting this man to safety battalion chief jason golden says his crew at the Southern Marin Fire Department got a call around 745 sunday night about a man who had fallen off a cliff near the battery alexander trail, southern marin fire called the Sonoma County sheriffs department, asking them to bring their helicopter. When they found the man. He was 120ft down the cliff, clinging to the side. The victim was about 40ft off the water line. The tide was coming in and was stuck on the cliff. It was dark and they had to use night vision to locate him. Once the straps were secured, they were able to lift him out. I got you brother. A rescue that took over a half hour. The rescuer afterwards speaking with him, said that that was one of the most precarious rescues because of how how the victim was grabbing on and how quickly they were to let him go. This trail is full of steep cliffs with far drops leading directly to the ocean. The Fire Department knew there was no way they could rescue this man without using a helicopter. It was just a much, much faster operation in to use the helicopter, and the individual was starting to lose their grip. Luckily, golden says the man is doing okay. They took him to the hospital after the rescue, but says when they got off the cliff he only had a few scrapes and bruises. Golden says these trails are popular when the weather gets nice, as they offer gorgeous views of the ocean. But he wants people to know these cliffs can be dangerous. Please, please be very careful when you get to the cliffs. Dont go up close to the edge. And please dont try and climb up in the north bay. Ryan curry, abc seven news. What a close call. Trouble along another section of our coastline this weekend. A section of highway one gave way along highway one south of carmel on saturday, stranding locals and visitors alike. Abc seven News Reporter zach fuentes shows you the effort underway now to try to get the tourists out and the residents home. Frightening images continue to come from Monterey County. Caltrans calls it a slip out. This portion is on highway one, just south of the rocky creek bridge. The southbound lane that takes people into big sur slid down a cliff saturday afternoon. No one was hurt, but at one point, more than 1600 tourists and locals were trapped. But help wasnt far away. It was a holiday weekend. We had a lot of day trippers that were stuck and isolated. Colin, two, haig and Ben Perlmutter run Big Sur River inn. No strangers to natural disasters in the area. The business was one of many that worked to help those impacted, opening their restaurant rooms and providing wifi in the area that has limited cell service as a community. The businesses together were able to take care of everyone that was down here. While people were initially stranded, convoys supervised by engineers took visitors through the closure one convoy in the morning and one in the afternoon have gotten residents and essential workers back and forth since then. Still, Monterey County said the regularity of that isnt guaranteed. Forecasts are a little bit uncertain right now, so the weather could have an impact on our ability to convoy people out the roads. Slip out is led to the closure of all state parks in the big sur area until further notice. And this closure is just another hit to the big sur community. Work is still being done on slides that have also closed part of highway one further south. The closures now on both sides have crushed the hopes of local businesses. We felt the inklings of a promising Summer Season in front of us, and rather than have that promising Summer Season, what it looks like now is we might have a very quiet summer. Typically, summer is our opportunity to make back the losses that we experienced throughout every single winter. Right now, they are hopeful that engineers can determine that the northbound lane is stable enough to allow one way traffic in with a temporary traffic light. If that becomes a reality and becomes a possibility, all of the businesses down here will probably will want to do everything we can to not discourage people from visiting, but to encourage folks to come to big sur to help support our community and all of our all of our people, in this community that depend on the hospitality businesses for their livelihood right now, the cause of the slip out is still being determined. Caltrans says crews are working on next steps to stabilize the edge of the roadway and design a permanent repair plan. Right now in the south bay bureau, zach fuentes, abc seven news. Rideshare drivers are pushing back against issues they claim are affecting their earnings and job security. Dozens of drivers held a series of socalled no fools rallies today in front of uber and lyft headquarters in San Francisco. They say theyve noticed a decline in pay due to high company fees, delayed stipends and sudden ride cancellations. They are also fighting for better methods to appeal deactivations and protect drivers against false claims from riders. There is no process in place by these companies to fast track drivers and put them back on the platform. Uber tells abc seven news that they have made significant improvements, allowing drivers to appeal false allegations. Lyft also responded, saying its drivers will always make at least 70 of weekly rider fares after fees. Starting today, fast food workers across california got a big pay raise. A more than half a million employees are now earning at least 20 an hour. Abc seven News Reporter lena howland looks at the impact on this wage increase for employees. Business owners and you as well. April 1st marks a fresh start for fast food workers across the golden state, with a new minimum wage of 20 an hour. Thats 4 higher than californias general 16 an hour minimum wage. Pero even though we are the engine of 1 billion industry, too many of us struggle to keep up with rent, our bills, and the rising cost of living. Angelica hernandez, a mcdonalds worker, has been in the fast Food Industry for the past 19 years, and she says this will make a big difference in her personal life. This raise gives us more of a chance to make ends meet, a chance to breathe a little easy, a chance to buy a coffee, or maybe take our family to the movies. The state doubled its minimum wage for most workers over the past decade, despite concerns that it would lead to job loss due to higher expenses. Instead a new Study Released by the Roosevelt Institute says wages went up and employment didnt change. We have a group that raised this minimum wage or had minimum wages that were higher and another group that did not, and theyre very comparable before the minimum wages in california start to increase. And we found substantial wage increases. We did not find employment declines. Tia kuntz, a legal and policy Research Manager at the ucla labor center, says companies can afford to share the wealth, with 80 of California Fast Food Workers being people of color. I would argue that surely instead of layoffs, they can share some of those profits with the poorest workers in california. The women of color work in two minimum wage jobs, get their three kids to school on the bus. Surely instead of layoffs, those folks could share their profit. But at the same time, Business Owners still worry theyll have to raise prices to offset the costs. But this bill, ab 1228, has really hit our operations hard. Were no longer hiring. Were not back filling positions. Were not growing in the state anymore. Were not expanding more locations. And im ultimately thinking about selling or closing my business. And there are some exceptions to this law, including bakeries and those Smaller Stores found in airports and grocery stores. Lena howland, abc seven news. In the north bay, sonoma could become the first us county to ban some controversial animal feeding operations. The board of supervisors is considering a ballot measure to end factory farming, also known as concentrates and animal feeding operations. Critics say those kinds of farms exceed animal population limits and contribute dramatically to pollution and other health and safety concerns. It is estimated there are about 24 factory farms in Sonoma County. Its a very small fraction compared to the total number of farms in the county, and yet across these two dozen facilities, there are approximately 2. 9 million animals confined. The Sonoma County farm bureau is fighting the ordinance. The Organization Says it would have catastrophic impacts on our local economy and set a dangerous precedent for other Animal Agriculture producers. Tomorrow is exactly four weeks since california voters went to the polls and were still waiting for the final results on a key race. The candidate who will challenge former san jose mayor sam liccardo for the 16th Congressional District seat is still all this time later, too close to call the latest numbers show Santa Clara County supervisor joe simitian leading assemblyman evan low by just five votes. It is that close now. It is important to remember here there are hundreds of ballots that have been challenged. Most of the time, its because a signature doesnt match whats on file. Voters have until tomorrow to resolve the challenged ballots. The election will be certified one week from friday. Well, drivers of clean air vehicles. Beware. Next while your days cruising through californias carpool lanes could be numbered if something dramatic doesnt happen, and later, the proposed change for Oakland International airport and why the folks at sfo those days may soon be ending without federal and state intervention, those stickers wont be renewed come 2025. Abc seven News ReporterLeslie Brinkley explains the repercussions. September 30th, 2025. Thats when the California Clean Air Vehicle Program is set to expire for everyone. So all owners of electric plug in or natural gas vehicles with a rainbow of stickers on their car, allowing them access to the carpool lane, would no longer have access. Really, a whole generation of drivers have come up uh with carpool access as an incentive for buying a clean air vehicle, and that access is uh in relatively short order. Will be disappearing. The problem is, first, the federal government has to allow states to extend their programs for clean air vehicles. Then california would be able to extend carpool access. But that scenario seems highly unlikely given the stalemate in congress. To the best of my knowledge, theres there isnt even a bill introduced yet uh on this. And so time is running out. There are over 400,000 drivers in california who currently have decals. Many of them bought their clean air vehicle to speed up their commute, so losing that privilege is a big deal. Its frustrating because, you know, like i said, the main reason for the frustration is driving in the bay area traffic. Theres another side to this. It could greatly benefit even incentivize, casual carpooling greatly decreasing the number of cars passing through that carpool lane at rush hour. Mtc says there are many possible outcomes, but the clock is ticking. Its unknown how that 2025 Expiration Date for decals could affect the sales of new clean air vehicles in california. In the east bay, im leslie brinkly. Abc seven news. From the east bay to the south bay, a new state of the art genomics lab is now open at Kaiser Permanente san jose. The new lab is also highly automated, which kaiser Officials Say will help reduce the workload for the Hospitals Lab technicians. Pgandes is tired of people digging up their equipment on accident, a problem they say is expensive and dangerous. You are supposed to call 811 before digging for construction or landscaping to make sure there are no pgandes lines in the area, but the utility says that is not happening. Pgandes counts nearly 140 damaged lines in Santa Clara County last year. The company says the county is already up to 16 so far this year, and even Small Projects could become big problems. They go, im going to only dig a couple of inches. Well, some utility lines can be very shallow, so it is important to call every time. Pgandes says damaging a line can be expensive for the people responsible. The average repair bill tops 3,500, just not worth the risk. Better safe than sorry. Yeah, lets talk about the weather forecast. A gorgeous spring like day today. But there are some changes. Yeah, but lets not think about that. Weve got a few days. Right, lisa . Yeah. Lets not. Because tomorrow, almost as nice as today. 77 today, santa rosa, sonoma, san rafael. Thats about ten degrees above average. It was 69 in San Francisco and 71 in oakland. We should be in the low 60s downtown and 67 san jose and santa rosa. So well above average. Big ridge of High Pressure protecting us today and tomorrow. No, it doesnt last. Youve probably heard about it in fact, were going to get a big whiplash by the end of the workweek. With temperatures struggling to make it out of the 50s with cold rain headed our way. 64 in San Francisco, it is 66, in oakland, 68 in hayward, 70. San jose 67. San mateo. Nobody there except right in the corner back there, a few sea lions, 73 in fairfield, 70 santa rosa. So really nice out there for the next few hours. And in fact, tonight well get into patchy low clouds and fog. And another just as mild day for most of us. For your tuesday, you can see the onshore flow allowing for a bit of a breeze. San francisco was significantly cooler than the rest of the bay, but still delightful out there. Tomorrow. Sunny, mild to warm again and that High Pressure begins to break down. We are cooler on wednesday, a mix of clouds and sun and then by thursday were looking at showers. Chance of a thunderstorm as we get into thursday and friday. I know its the giants home opener and those thunderstorms are that unsettled. Weather looks to sink pretty far south on friday, so still an early call on that. Well try to fine tune it. We will fine tune it. But as you look at the forecast highs for tomorrow in this column, you can see all the average high temperatures in the 60s. So we will be anywhere from 2 to 11 degrees warmer tomorrow for your tuesday. So a gorgeous day out there seems like weve been deprived right of the warmer weather. It has been wetter, it has been cooler than average. And that trend, it looks like its going to come back into play as we get towards the middle of the week. Low clouds and fog for the north bay by the delta for your tuesday morning. Then look at the push for wednesday. Weve got high clouds and low clouds set up for a much cooler afternoon. And then by thursday morning theres the rain. And in fact, more unstable air for the chance of thunderstorms as we get into your thursday later day and friday. So 60s 70s tomorrow. Beautiful afternoon. Look at the cooldown for wednesday. Were in the low 60s. Only 60 in oakland. Thats below average. And then by thursday. Yeah, it is so cold that we could see a rain snow mix, mount diablo, mount hamilton, but were not going to have a whole lot of moisture with this next system. Highs tomorrow 70, oakland 75 and concord 78. In san jose 74. Santa rosa 65, San Francisco. Enjoy it. Soak it up the accuweather seven day forecast. Beautiful for your tuesday wednesday youre going to feel that cool down. Partly cloudy thursday. Level one system friday morning showers. Hopefully theyll get out of town for the giants opener. And then by saturday its dry. Its cool. Its below average on sunday and well recover on monday. Were going to need to recover. Its the heat on the blankets. The jackets again traumatizing. Very confusing. Yeah it is. Youll be okay. Thank i dont know. Thanks, lisa. Well, they are the best of the best. They are next. Oakland international airport. Officials at San Francisco international . Well, they dont like it at all. Welcome back. Officials with the port of oakland want to change the name from metropolitan Oakland International airport to San Francisco bay. Oakland international airport. Now, they believe it would sustain passenger traffic and reaffirm the airports proximity to San Francisco. However sfo officials think the new name could cause some confusion. They say Oakland Airport should consider a different name. Now the port of oaklands commissioners will vote on the name change proposal april 11th. The airport code and visual brand, those things would stay the same. San Francisco Mayor london breed is about to head to china. The mayor will leave on april 13th on a nine day mission to promote tourism. According to our Media Partners at the sf standard, breed wants to strengthen relations with shanghai and hopes to return with good news about pandas potentially coming to the San Francisco zoo. Chinese tourists spent more than one dollars billion a year here prepandemic. A bridge itinerary includes stops in hong kong, shenzhen, guangzhou and shanghai, as well as beijing and abc. Seven news insider phil matier is here to talk more about the mayors upcoming trip. Whos going to pay for this trip . Well, im not , but youre more than welcome to contribute if you want to trips like this are paid for by a group that is basically a Booster Group for chinese and american relationships. And from San Francisco protocol and tourism and such like that. So its not public tax dollars at work here. Is it a junket . Well, partially. Its a good time. People get together and they go and they have cultural exchanges. This one was set up during the recent apec meeting here in San Francisco, where the president of china was in attendance, and they managed to score this. And while shes there, shes looking to attract more tourism, as we pointed out, and possibly maybe an interest of chinese universities to locate a campus, possibly in the downtown area, or as to try to fill that area and thirdly, to get some panda time. Yeah. Okay and thats the goal is to try to get the pandas, which are headed for san diego, to actually make a stop and stay in San Francisco, reroute them a little bit. All right. Talking about rerouting as we just reported, sfo officials there taking issue with oaklands internationals proposed name change, they want to do this rebranding. I mean, where do you see all of this playing out, phil . Well, its interesting because, you know, the oakland is basically saying what San Francisco is saying, that they want to rebrand it in order to attract more people. But San Francisco says, yes, youre going to be attracting more people, but is it going to be a bait and switch . If somebody now somebody from the bay area knows where oakland is, someone from california does, but somebody coming in from, lets say, beijing or buenos aires or london does it necessarily. And they might be a little shocked when they get off the plane. And its on the other side of the bay. Okay. So thats part of it. Now, the stockton tried to do this back in 2017 because they wanted to do it San Francisco, stockton regional airport. They said thats a bit of a stretch. Its 77 miles. San francisco objected then as well. And they backed off. Whether oakland backs off remains to be seen. San francisco, youre going to be hearing from lawmakers and state lawmakers urging a reconsider asian and San Francisco. While it cant stop, it, does hold the copyright, apparently for those words. When it comes to an airport. So there might be a legal challenge and its just defending its turf at the end of the day. All right. Earlier in the newscast, we talked about the starting in september of 2025, next year, californias Clean Air Vehicle Program expires, meaning owners of electric plug in hybrids or natural gas vehicles will not be allowed access to those carpool lanes. Any effort to try to save this . I know theyre popular by a lot of people with evs. They are, but theyre not necessarily popular with the rest of the people. I mean, we have about 411,000 of these stickers out there. Some of them are active, some of them are inactive. But, you know, one of the questions is originally the those lanes were set in to get people out of their cars and share cars. And then it became a way to get clean up the environment with electric. And then it got a little crowded. And so now theyve come up with a solution. Im not sure how effective those stickers really are, because now all those diamond lanes, theyre toll lanes. Yeah. Right. Okay. You and i were just talking about this, so maybe its time electric vehicles have come on their own, and well see what happens from there. All right, phil, thanks very much. Well, starting tomorrow, San FranciscoSchool District employees will be able to apply for the citys first Affordable Housing development, built specifically for teachers. Abc seven News Reporter luz pena spoke to the School District superintendent on what this means for the city. The day has come. Applications for the first Affordable Housing building that will prioritize sfusd employees and teachers is set to open on tuesday. Were thrilled that this is coming. Weve been struggling with staffing and recruiting and retaining, and so it means so much to be able to have our educators have an option in the city. San francisco unified School District superintendent doctor matt wayne is hoping Affordable Housing will help the district retain and attract more educators. Theres a big need. About half of our employees live outside the city, and wed love to have as many as possible in the city. And we know one of the Major Barriers is Affordable Housing. The site is still under construction, but once finalized, the 135 unit building will house San Francisco unified School District employees and teachers to qualify, their Household Income needs to be between 42,000 to 160 k, according to the latest School District data. 15 of teachers in San Francisco spend more than 50 of their income on rent. Malcolm x Academy Teacher kareem isom is hoping he will be selected. For myself and my family, it just means a lot, because i do have kids, i am a single father and so just for them to have more space, the building is located in the sunset district and will have 24 studios as well as 43 one bedroom apartments, 58 two bedroom apartments, and nine three bedrooms. The site will also have amenities that will allow teachers to collaborate, a space where teachers can go and study or plan. The process has taken almost a decade. In 2015, the board of supervisors and the board of education passed a resolution supporting the building of educator housing in San Francisco. The city says the project was delayed due to covid 19 and svusd budget cuts. We anticipate there will be a lot of demand which really interesting about this project is that it utilized land that is currently owned by the School District. The site is set to open in the fall of this year, and the School District is already planning to expand it starting next month. Of course, this is a very significant port on the east coast. President biden is set to visit the site on friday recovering from a different kind of disaster. Coming up next, the restaurant leading the way in lahaina effort to rebound from last summers devastating wildfire damage. As a result. However, one popular oceanfront restaurant survived the destruction and recently reopened its doors. And as youll see in this localish report, mala ocean tavern is a beacon of hope for the whole community. While ocean tavern has been here since 2004, it already was a lahaina staple where people came to celebrate special occasions and birthdays. And now theres a little bit of deeper meaning and something more special. Were located on front street, and front street is like one of the most iconic streets in the world. When you have your daily routine completely shook, and when people are able to drop in and see you, its been really joyous to see everyone and be able to hug them and speak to them and just have a bit of what we remember. We feel very blessed that. Mala ocean tavern we are the first to open on front street and were just thrilled to be here. Well, we specialize in hawaii regional cuisine, so the original chef owner was one of the founders of hawaii regional cuisine. This building was built over 100 years ago. It was a pineapple waystation. This area has been special for hundreds of years. Long before we came along. The next day, i came down here with my dirt bike because i wanted to see everything for myself. And i remember walking down the street and i saw the building still standing, and i was just, like, blown away. Its crying like, i cant believe this is really here. Like its still here, it was a miracle. The first thing on our mind is our people. Lets take care of our people first and figure all that out. Then we started focusing on mala and the business and the restaurant, cleaning out everything and getting it ready. We had to get water. That was like our biggest thing, but also the sewers. The power. Its been so many hurdles to overcome, opening back up. Every time i walk in there, im just like, oh, it feels like im like gone back in time and im just like, oh, im in a happy place, you know . And i do feel different when i leave because i am reminded of, of all the destruction. But it does feel like one step in the right direction, like this is a little bit of healing. We really just invite people to come in and enjoy and be here and be present and share the aloha and not feel the need to ask the deep questions. Because literally every single one of our staff members, every Single Person in lahaina, every Single Person who resides on maui, have been impacted by what happened here. Were so happy to see all the Smiling Faces and people have been so beautiful and so respectful and so kind, and our community has come out in full force to support us. And its just really wonderful seeing all those familiar faces. You know, ill come around the corner and ill see a regular sitting at the bar that i havent seen in six months, and ill just kind of have that jolt of what, is this all a dream . Was that a dream . What happened . You know, its just so special seeing people coming here and seeing people eat and the reservations and stuff like that, like it is a it is a sign of relief. Please come and support maui. Please visit the businesses that are in lahaina or on the west side up north from us that have been impacted. I think now its been over six months and a lot of these Small Businesses need the support of tourism, need the support of local people with the support of all the people that have been coming and all the smiles and all the tears, happy tears, you know, there have been lots of happy tears. I cant even describe how how wonderful it is to have the support and just have people coming in and being so grateful. Thats great bit by bit, right . Getting on their feet and something about joining over food and community makes it extra special. Uplifting. All right. Lets talk a little bit about the weather forecast. We were heading right into spring and now we seem to be pulling back a little. Yeah were going to take a nosedive in a little bit. Yeah definitely putting on the brakes after tomorrow. Gorgeous evening out there. Check out San Francisco 64 degrees right now. Look at all the blue sky. And you know, if you have plans out for tonight. Lucky you, because it is still quite mild out there. 70 in san jose looking at low 60s. Half moon bay. And from our sutro tower camera clear just a lovely night. 69 in napa with temperatures in the 70s in our inland valley. So compared to yesterday, we are anywhere from 7 to 12 degrees warmer at this hour. So looking at the trends tomorrow, still 70s. Look what happens in san jose. Upper 60s on wednesday and then 50s. Here we go up in napa 70s tomorrow 60s on wednesday. The breeze kicks up. Weve got a cold rain coming. Chance of a thunderstorm as we get through wednesday and thursday. So enjoy tomorrow the accuweather seven day forecast. Then that level one system coming in on thursday. I know the giants home opener on friday. Hopefully that rain will sink south, but nonetheless its going to be cold, its going to be brisk and then over the weekend get a break from the rain. But we wont warm up until next monday. So two words i was hoping not to hear in a while. Cold and brisk and rain and rain and our storm impact scale. Oh, lets lets move on. And i know for all the talk about Draymond Green losing his cool in orlando, getting thrown out of the game, he was tremendous last night in san antonio when he keeps his cool. Draymond can make a huge impact and is a big part of the dubs. Going four and one on this last road trip. He got the key offensive rebound in the final moments and the assist to Klay Thompson help put the spurs away. His stats amazing 21 points 11 assists, six steals, six rebounds and all the while he was dealing with seven for victor wembanyama. My man draymond was incredible tonight. That was a defensive masterpiece. Draymond is a hes a genius defensively. The way draymond played was unbelievable. Presence felt. He does it. On the defensive end. He does it with his matchups. You know making those extra plays. But even tonight on the offensive end being aggressive taking what the defense gave him gave us a huge boost. You know at this time of year you want to be playing well. You you know you got to win right now. Obviously we all know what the standards are and all of that stuff. So it was a good trip for us. And now we got to go back home and try to build them. Speaking of which, the warriors will play host to luka doncic and the mavericks tomorrow night. Luka, coming off a 47 point game against the rockets, highlighted by this what do i do . Underhanded shot from like 20 something feet with a defender all over him. Like thats a bad shot in a game of horse, right . Right unless your name is luka doncic. Ridiculous nfl news 40 niners quarterback brock purdy not eligible for a huge pay increase until after next season. We got a nice little bump in pay from the nfl. Purdy got what they call a performance based bonus, and i dont know why they havent started doing this in television. But anyway, for taking the niners to the super bowl and making the pro bowl, purdy made 985,000 last season, got over 739 k in bonus pay. So it works out to about like 75 of his salary. I know its not Patrick Mahomes money 45 million a year thatll thatll come, but its a nice check to find in the mail. Right. Little baseball home opener on the north side. Cubs rockies two on for the cubs christopher morel in the sixth base. Hit to left. Runner is going to move up. Oh, no. The rockies are bad. Nolan jones misplayed the ball all the way to the wall. One run in, two runs in. Cue the clown car music. The two uh defenders there. The ball gets away from those two guys. Its a Little League home run and the cubs win five nothing. After splitting four games in san diego, the giants open a series with the dodgers in l. A. Tonight. New Center Fielder jungwoo lee seems to be the real deal. Hit his first home run over the weekend in san diego, and the korean broadcasters loved every second of it. Nam. Suh oh, he. The reason the to make. Oh hes over kbeauty. Good to go into zaga bazzoni. I have no idea what they were saying, but i love it. The giants gave lee a 100 million deal to get him from south korea to come over here, and he is living up to the hype so far.
