Ashley. Thanks for joining us. The cameras are part of a state Pilot Program from Governor Newsom signed into law last year. Oakland and san jose are also included. The proposal, released today by sfmta, is for each of San Franciscos 11 districts to get at least two cameras. Most will be concentrated in the northeast part of the city on some of the most dangerous streets. Tonight, abc seven News Reporter jared stone has the strong reaction from drivers and pedestrians. This camera is already up along San Franciscos embarcadero, but if youre a driver in the city, youll want to be aware of 33 new cameras that will be going up scattered across San Franciscos 49mi■ s. Theyre called speed Safety Cameras that will automatically ticket you for speeding. Im totally down for the speed cameras. I think the drivers are a little psycho on this street. Hes referring to an area on bay street near van ness avenue its one of the proposed spots for a new speed camera. I think the drivers in the city in general just feel like theyve kind of owned the place and have gotten a little too uh a little too over their skis when it comes to following the rules, you know, people gunning it from one block to the other, they still hit a light and they slow down. But i mean, theres really no reason to be going that fast in the city. Yes, it seems that a lot of pedestrians we spoke with love. The plan. Some people go way too fast and it just leads to people cutting other people off and just kind of general stress. You wont be ticketed until you go 11mph over the speed limit. That will cost you 50. 16 over will cost you 100 bucks and at least 26mph over. Will cost you 200. Were really excited about it. We think that this can save lives. Were locating cameras outside of school sites, outside of parks, outside of senior centers, places where there are very vulnerable uh san franciscans that we absolutely want to protect. But not everybody is fully into the idea. I think itd be a lot nicer if more resources went to like, more, bigger problems. Personally, when i walk outside, i dont think, man, i really wish that guy got a ticket for speeding. Like i understand it. But you know, the citys already expensive. Its just. And you feel like this is just milking us for money . Yeah, milking us for money. Andrea sparrok believes there are lots of city issues that need to be addressed. Foremost like crime and potholes. She wants to know where this fine money is going to go. Any fines associated with the program would go to pay for additional traffic calming improvements throughout the city , but at this point, Officials Say they still have to buy the cameras from a vendor. So there is still work to be done. The goal here is to have these cameras installed by early 2025. The first 60 days of the program would involve warnings only in San Francisco. J. R.
