Gesture. Mom and daughter live in the chicago area. Their rabbi was overjoyed. They were released. It brings us a tremendous amount of gratitude to the almighty, to god, for this incredible miracle. And we were really excited, looking forward to see them. There are nuns were kidnaped along with 200 other people, two weeks ago, secretary of state Anthony Blinken said. Ten other americans captured should be released immediately. Good evening. Im ahmed daetz. And im dana ashley. Thanks for joining us. This comes as Governor Newsom made a visit to israel today before continuing on to china. The governor hostage. And tonight, were also from a Lieutenant Colonel in the Israel Defense force who is in charge of protecting dozens of tiny communities along the gaza border. Reporter josh hennigar from our sister station in new york city met up with Lieutenant Colonel in one town where an unthinkable massacre took place two weeks ago near ose was a place of peace and light. A tiny Kibbutz Community all but wiped out. Now after a bloodbath of hate that started a war, they slaughtered us. They slaughtered. Theres no other word to what happened here. Keith isaacson is the idfs Lieutenant Colonel in charge of protecting 32 kibbutzim along the sprawling gaza border, 16 of which were attacked. Similar taneously that sleepy saturday morning by teams of fighters with a Singular Mission to kill men, women and children as they cowered in their safe rooms after they ransacked this houses living room. And then this room, which looks like it was perhaps a bedroom they got to the familys safe room. Now, a safe room is designed to withstand rockets from above, not bullets from outside the door. They shot through the door inside. Whoever was in here was killed. They lit the houses. You can see you can see here. And most of the houses are on fire because they try to get to the to the kids and the women. In the bombshell out. Eventually they had to open the window and thats where they they were killed. Just over 400 people live in neros at least 160 of them wound up either killed or kidnaped, stowed away with the other hostages somewhere in gaza, which is so close to the kibbutz. You can hear continued israeli strikes in the distance. The upcoming war all but inevitable. And for people in this heartbroken land, it means setting aside their shock and steeling themselves for hard days ahead. I lost six of my officers and tens of my response teams. I dont even know how many of my First Response team have been killed. I have no other choice just to really put that aside and try. I have a lot of people looking up to me and that was josh einiger. Locally, activists gathered at the San Francisco Federal Building for one of Many National protests today in solidarity with the palestinian people. This ones called stop the gaza genocide. Its organized by the us campaign for palestinian rights. Theyre working on a road mural and calling on people to contact their members of congress to demand a cease fire and deescalate. Asian protests will also take place across dozens of states over the weekend at stanford university, a couple hundred people showed up for a rally in support of the palestinian people. Theyre calling for specialized resources for palestinian american students, developed alongside student organizations. They are also demanding that stanford divest from companies or organizations that support israel. As the war rages on, bay area residents are trying to keep up with family members in israel and in gaza. For palestinian americans, its becoming increasingly harder because power is cut to all of the gaza strip. Abc7 News Reporter anser hassan spoke to some locals who say theyre trying to remain optimistic that their family members will stay alive into. Rami sultan recorded the last phone call he had with his cousin who lives in gaza right now. The people of gaza have no spokespeople. They have no witnesses. Its a situation where you have to choose between what way youre going to die. Rami, who works in high tech in silicon valley, says 500 of his family members had to walk almost 20 miles, fleeing israeli airstrikes in northern gaza, taking refuge in unrun schools who, ramis cousin tells him they dont have food, they dont have water, they dont have money. My cousin explained to me that its not safe. Its just somewhat less dangerous. Theyre trying their best to live. Theyre trying their best to live. Rami recorded the conversation in to have an eyewitness account of whats happening on the ground and to serve as the family archive. If they dont survive. My cousin conveyed that they had given up on human rights and the concept of human rights with respect to them being applied to their situation and i want the world to know is that were human. Our lives, my familys lives are just as valuable as israeli lives. So it is very important for us to remember our humanity that this is not a political issue and that this is a humanitarian issue. Colette ghonim is a filmmaker who lives in San Francisco. Her first feature length film traces of home, traces her palestinian fathers journey back to his childhood home in what is now israel, which he was forced to flee. My father is definitely a refugee. He was removed in 1948 with the catastrophe, the nakba. Her family is safe, but her concerns remain around the deteriorating conditions on the ground in gaza. As a filmmaker, she is encouraged by the role of social media having people that are not palestinian get to create their own opinions and be informed of what is happening. Um, really feels like it is. It is shifting the narrative to understand what is actually transpiring because israel cut power to the gaza strip. Cell phones dont work. So rami doesnt know if his family is still alive, but he remains faithful in our small strip of land that we live in, we wont give up. We show that we will continue to resist it just by living anser hassan. Abc seven news. And we will continue to keep you updated on whats happening in israel, gaza and here at home on this story. Civil rights attorney jim shannon has been replaced on the Oakland Police Commission Selection panel by his max five year term. Ended a year and a half ago. But City Council President Nikki Fortunato bass asked him to stay on until a replacement could be named bass appointed east Bay Asian Youth Center director david kishiba to the seat yesterday day. Some former commissioners say they forced bass to remove shannon. They filed a lawsuit to get shannon replaced based on what they believe are financial and ethical conflicts of interest. Bass told the news site oaklandside that the lawsuit played no role in her decision on a tentative agreement. Tonight between teachers and the San Francisco Unified School District will avert a possible strike. The two sides have been negotiating since march. Abc seven News Reporter loose pena with a look at the deal. After more than 12 hours, San Francisco teachers and the School District reached. We have a deal. A tentative deal. But to get here, both sides began bargaining sessions at 5 p. M. Thursday. That extended all the way into friday morning. Jeffrey finger, a math teacher at balboa high school, was part of the Bargaining Committee when we met him. He had only gotten 30 minutes of sleep. Were proud of what we were able to accomplish with this tentative agreement. Were hoping that the union rallies around it. Among the proposal was an economic package that includes a 9,000 Salary Increase for teachers in the 2023 to 2024 school year. Teachers will also receive an additional 5 raise for the 2024, 2025 school year, which will be in full effect by january of 2025. Initially the united educators of San Francisco were asking for more. We came in initially asking for 12,000 for the first year and 8. And again, that those might sound like large numbers, but those numbers are very much in par with, frankly, what has been 20 inflation over the last three years. The tentative agreement includes Worker Protections and higher compensation for parents, educators. They have been paid history, horrifically low amounts in some in many cases, amounts that that would frankly lead them to go to other other jobs. This raised the floor from 18 an hour for them all the way up to 30 an hour. Now, whats next . Well, there will be several town halls where teachers will get to ask questions. And in about two weeks or so, teachers will be asked to vote. After that, the board will actually take action and vote on the final agreement. This agreement was vital to prevent the possibility of San Franciscos First Teacher strike since 1979. The big joy for me is that we were able to avoid a strike and we were able to kind of find a middle ground that really prioritized Student Learning and Student Outcomes as ll as what our educators need. According to the sfusd board president , this agreement will also likely help with a proposed 1 billion school bond. It just allows for our whole School Community to come together and be focused on what it will take to make sure were able to successfully get the funds to improve our schools in San Francisco, luis pena, abc seven news. And this line built with the intention of making it easier for people to access chinatown. But with one of the biggest conferences coming to San Francisco in decades, this line wont be running. Sfmta has to make adjustments. Well be able to run High Frequency sea shuttle trains between union square, Market Street station and chinatown. This is very important for us to make sure we maintain strong connectivity to chinatown in addition to that, sfmta will send text messages, emails and Public Notices to let people know of the changes. Lee, with the Chinatown Merchants Association says they need to make sure anyone traveling from apec to chinatown is aware of the alternate routes. She envisions. A lot of people at apec touring the rest of the city, and theyre going to have a cable car over at moscone center, where people can take pictures. So there that can remind them and say, yeah, come on over to visit the rest of the city. She says apec could bring thousands of people to chinatown, a big boost to the local businesses.
