We turn to the gma cover story on good cholesterol. A new study finds a potential live between your hdl and increased risk of dementia developing. Our medical correspondent dr. Darien sutton is here to break it down. Nice to see you, dr. Sutton. Good morning. This strikes my attention. My family has high cholesterol and issues with that. So many are like this. Whats the study and whats the data showing . Well, the result of the study are likely going to be the source of a lot of confusing headlines. Just to break it down, they followed over 180,000 older adults. They followed them for 13 years. They tracked their cholesterol and identified those who developed dementia. They found those who had the lowest levels of hdl, that good cholesterol, had increased risk of dementia. Also those who had the highest levels of hdl all had an increased risk of dementia. Its important to be said, this is an association, not a cause and effect. It doesnt change the current recommendations. It likely will lead to more research, asking the question, is there an upper limit that we should hold for that good cholesterol, that hdl . When you are having conversations with your doctor about your hdl, what kinds of things should you be asking . I think first, know your numbers. Ldl should be below 100. Hdl if youre a man should be above 40. Hdl if youre a woman should be above 50. Also, if you are limited risk or low risk and relatively healthy, you only need to check those numbers every few years. Every few years. And what do you do to manage it . Diet. Diet is the most important. Limiting saturated fats. Lower that ldl as much as possible, increasing fiber. Starting your day with Something Like an oat cereal is helpful. Many people dont know, physical activity activates hdl so it can do its job. Get physically active. You know, like, when i was a kid, i would say, i hate green beans, but if they were grown out of the ground and i have sitting there, i would pick them an eat them as fast as i could, as i told you i hated them. What was it like for you, davian to achieve this dream . You started at 4 years old. What made you want to go to this level at your age . Is i mean, i think what really separated me from the other kids was, around 10 years old, like during covid, i went to home school, so i started training in the morning and at night. I feel like that helped me push my game to a different level. I should point out, oh by the way, they won the game. Your team won. How did you celebrate . Im sure the old r players were popping champagne. How about you . I celebrated by going to our familys golf course, taking pictures. Then also i went over to the fans at the end to take pictures. It just must have been, you must have looked around the stadium and felt like it was a dream. Im so very happy for you. I can relate to your dad. Dom, you and your wife were college athletes. I mean, to have an athletic kid like this, its such a pinch me moment. What advice did you have for davian about getting to this level . Just stick to the course and just keep working. Its going to be a lot of noise. As long as you focus on what you want and you continue to work at it and work hard, you know, whatever you ask and whatever you want can happen, but you have to be willing to put in the work. Im excited every day to come to school because of mariachi. When i play phaouic, i feel happiness. That music is touching the lives of so many students across the country. Its all thanks to a recent explosion of school music programs. One two three, one two three. I get students who come up to me and say, youre the director of mariachi, how can i join . Reporter john bridges has guided springfield highs Mariachi Program for seven years seeing firsthand the growth of his classmates. Especially post pandemic, they have come in and struggled to engage with others. By the time they leave this program, they walk around with a different sense of purpose and strength. Reporter and in East Los Angeles one Mariachi Program is so coveted middle School Students must enter a lottery to get selected, with more than 150 names on the wait list. They dont call it the music room, they call it home. Reporter the director said the music has been instrumental in helping her students connect with their culture. My lead singer does not speak spanish. Her grandpa played music. To see their bond grow stronger every time, it reminds me of my bond with my grandpa. Reporter this is a Mariachi Program at Davis Elementary in tucson, arizona. For one family, the after School Program is four generations in the making. Mariachi is such a wonderful inspiring type of music. Reporter creating the program more than 30 years ago, his son is now the current director. You see a lot of adult mariachis. You dont see youth mariachis. Its very rare. Reporter jaime now passing the legacy on to his son, 11yearold jj. Growing up in a mariachis family comes a lot of pressure and responsibility.
