And meeted the mom taking care of business. She brought her triplets and 5yearold to jury duty when she couldnt get a babysitter. Good morning america. Thanks for being with us. Welcome to both of you. Maui is just weighing heavily on our hearts and minds and we want to get straight to that story. Those devastating wild fires. Overnight the death toll rising to at least 55 people. Officials are warning that number could climb as crews race to search for survivors. Ill speak with the mayor of maui in a moment. Images are heart break. Look at this drone video of mauis historic front street. Absolutely scorched. One person saying it looks like a bomb went off. This is breath taking this before and after image showing the extent of the damage to the coast line from these unprecedented wild fires. We have Team Coverage this morning. We begin with whit johnson. Good morning to you, whit. Reporter rebecca, good morning to you. You can just see the devastation right here. Were in the coola neighborhood, one of many areas ravaged by the historic wild fires. This home burned to the ground. Across the island, hundreds of structures have been destroyed, dozens of people have been killed in these historic wild fires. Sadly, that toll is only expected to climb. This morning widespread devastation from the largest Natural Disaster in hawaiis history. One of the biggest fires in the country. The downtown area is significantly damaged. Reporter the wild fires claiming the lives of at least 55 people. Officials expecting the count to grow even higher over the coming days. The police chief saying they are still trying to locate as many as 1,000 people. Doesnt mean thats how much we have, that have passed. Im not saying that number at all. But because we cant contact them and because they cant necessarily come into the greater valley as quickly or as much as wed like because theyre actually in shelter, until we get some of those basic things set up, were not going to have that number. Reporter President Biden approving a disaster declaration for hawaii. Anyone whos lost a loved one, whose home has been damaged or destroyed is gonna get help immediately. Reporter Hawaii National guard activating 134 troops including 99 army National Guard and 35 air National Guard personnel to aid in response efforts. Helicopters flying over the island once covered in lush greenery. Areas now resembling a smoldering desert. Many homes and businesses in lahaina, the one time capital which holds deep cultural and historical significance, now reduced to ash. We have a scar on the face of maui that will be here for a long time. Reporter one man forced to jump into the ocean to save himself after battling the flames for three hours. I ran into the ocean. I gave in. Everything gone. Reporter and Police OfficerMichael Meredith going back into danger to find his stranded aunt at a gas station. She just grabbed me and pulled me close. I told her, were gonna get you home. I brought uncle brian. To see them embrace was, you know, you cant replace that. Reporter displaced residents encouraged to stay in shelters. The west side of maui without power or water. Were talking months to get everything fully restored. Reporter overnight we spoke to an emergency doctor, telling us he rushed into lahaina with his mobile clinic and began treating patients. People were stuck in the fire zone . Yeah. It literally felt like an atomic bomb went off and survivors were coming out. Reporter the thing we keep hearing from people over and over is just how fast it all happened. Witnesses describing flaming embers raining down from the sky, igniting buildings all arpb them. Some people having only seconds to try to flee to safety. This morning hundreds are still unaccounted for. Eva . Thank you, whit. Joining us now is the mayor of maui to tell us about the latest in the rescue efforts. Good morning, mayor. Good morning to you. I understand that you were able to go to lahaina today. What did you see on the ground when you walked there . Yeah. I traveled out there with our governor and our u. S. Senator as well as our state senator and assistant general to see first hand. You know, the closest thing i can compare it to is perhaps a war zone where maybe a bomb went off. It was cars in the street, doors open, melted to the ground. Most structures no longer exist for blocks and blocks of this. Im familiar with what it looked like growing up here on maui, especially with my mom working at one of the restaurants here for 17 years. It doesnt resemble anything that it looked like when i was growing up. You mentioned the search and rescue efforts. How are those going . Where do they stand . Thats being done by my Police Department offices, the National Guard. Weve gotten some assistance from the coast guard in the water as well. And we have some cadaver dogs that have come in to maui today. So we will be, you know, increasing our area that we can search. But its been going on two days. They recovered 53 bodies. Thinking about maui. Such a special place for so many people. How do you think the island is going to be able to recover . We are going to rebuild, number one. Theres so much support. Again, i really want to thank the president , President Biden. In very short time, i think in six hours from the request, when the request was first made he signed the declaration, obviously, declaring us as an emergency. Our governor also issued an emergency proclamation declaring an emergency. So did i. For the county. But what this has done, its opened up the ability for us to seek federal assets, federal money. Thats what we intend to do. But right now our focus is on fighting the fires, saving lives where we can or preventing further harm. Of course, property as well. Well get to the investigative stage when thats appropriate. But right now our goal is to call on the community. They need to know we are working together. Theres been an outpouring of so many donations and offers of help. So were coordinating all of that right now. And making good use. Were very thankful for all the folks that are offering their expertise and their help to us. Were taking full advantage of that by accepting that help. And we are continuing, again, to get the message to our community that we will rebuild. I just do want to mention while we have shut down the west side of the island, the rest of the island remains open. We have not shut down the island of maui, but certainly for safety reasons, the lahaina, or the west side. Mayor, we are thinking of your community and well be continuing to think of your community. Thank you very much for being with us this morning. Thank you very much. Take care, please. Thank you. Demarco . Now to the race to evacuate and the chaos at the airport as people try to leave the island. Will carr is there with more. Good morning, will. Reporter good morning, demarco. This airport has turned into a make shift shelter. So many people sleeping here, i had to keep my voice down. Two nights ago 1,400 people slept on the floor here. This morning there are several hundred more. They are left with some supplies. They have water and food here. But they are being brought by waves of buses because hotels have been evacuated. I spoke to one mom who decided to rent a car. She and her two kids are sleeping in that car until they can catch a flight sometime this weekend. But she did tell me with a tear in her eye that that is nothing compared to the people who lost so much on this island. The airlines are trying to help. Hawaiian airlines has dropped some tickets to 19. They got 6,000 people off this island yesterday. Trying to get a lot more today. Demarco . Will, thank you very much. Lets bring in ginger now for a look at the forecast for the fire zones. Good morning to you, ginger. Good morning, demarco. While they could see a few showers overnight, they will be light. This is their dry season. Remember it was that High Pressure system to the north and trade winds in the middle that squeezed together a tight pressure gradient. It wasnt doras winds because it was 700 miles away. Today you can anticipate still 20 to 30 mile per hour gusts. Thats the problem when youre fighting a fire. They are in an updated drought monitor. Slight pmoderate on the western side of the island. Rebecca . Thank you. We turn now to new details about the five americans released from the notorious prison in iran. One step closer to coming home this morning. Our chief Global Affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz is there with details. Good morning, martha. Reporter good morning. All five americans remain in iran under house arrest but with hopes that within a matter of weeks they will be back on u. S. Soil. This morning after months of secret negotiations, five americans, the last known american prisoners held by iran, finally freed from tehrans notorious prison after years of incarceration. An oil executive, the longest held, detained and charged with espionage in 2015. Another charged with espionage, a conservationist arrested in 2018. And a man traveling with his wife in iran in 2018 when he was arrested and later charged with espionage. All of the americans deny those charges. The fourth and fifth americans want to keep their identities private. This is an important day and a big step forward. But at the same time, the proof is in the outcome not in the discussion, not in the commitments. Hes not going to believe its over until the plane has left iranian air space. Reporter while the families are grateful, this sopbl an intermediate step. Under the terms of the agreement between iran and the u. S. , some 6 billion in oil revenue from south korea will be released once the americans are freed from the country. The money has up until now been frozen by u. S. Sanctions. Secretary of state Antony Blinken saying the money must be used for humanitarian purposes only. My belief is that this is the beginning of the end of their nightmare. We want to make sure that we complete this process. Reporter it will likely take at least four or five weeks for that money to come through and the prisoners brought back to the u. S. The white house saying the negotiations remain delicate. Eva . Martha raddatz for us. Thank you. New allegations for Supreme CourtJustice Clarence thomas. A new report says hes accepted more gifts from a billionaire than previously thought. Elizabeth schulze has the latest. Good morning to you, elizabeth. Reporter good morning, eva. This latest report about Justice Thomas is fuelling a debate around ethics and transparency at the nations highest court. This morning Supreme CourtJustice Clarence thomas is facing new allegations he accepted luxurious vacations and gifts from wealthy individuals and didnt properly disclose them. Propublica reports those gifts include at least 38 destination vacations, two stays at luxury resorts, 26 flights on private jets and eight on helicopters and a dozen vip passes to sporting events. The publication said it found no evidence the donors had legal cases in front of the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has rules they voluntarily adhere to. At the same time, they can be quite broad and also quite vague. Even if something is violating an ethical code, there is something unseemly gross maybe even about flying around on private jets with billionaires. Reporter abc news has not independently verified pro publicas claims and the Supreme Court hasnt responded to requests for comment. After propublica reported thomas failed to disclose high end vacation and private jet travel paid by billionaire donor harlan crowe. The conservative justice said it was his understanding he wasnt required to report this sort of personal hospitality from close personal friends. You hear from folks on the left is maybe he hasnt violated the letter of these regulations, but he has certainly bringing disrepute on the Supreme Court. Reporter Justice Alito defended himself after he didnt report a luxury trip to alaska and private jet flight and Justice Sotomayor used tax funded staff at the Supreme Court to help sell her books. They are the most powerful judges in america and yet they are not required to file even the most basic ethical standards. Reporter Senate Democrats are pushing to pass law that would require Supreme Court justices to adopt a binding code of ethics but it faces an up hill battle in a divided congress. All nine justices have suggested they oppose that move. Demarco . Thank you very much. Now to the race for 2024 and the republican president ial hopefuls heading to the iowa state fair. A key stop on the campaign trail. Our senior Congressional Correspondent rachel scott is at the fair this morning with the latest. Rachel, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, demarco. Consider the iowa state fair the biggest stage yet for this crowded republican field. Nearly every single republican candidate will be crossing paths here at the state fair in the coming days making their pitch to voters testing out their debate message, flipping pork and of course eating plenty of fried food. Were five months from the Iowa Caucuses and former President Trump still holds a commanding lead in this race. Even in a state that hes barely visited. The former president has only traveled to iowa seven times since launching his third bid for the white house. Compare that to ron desantis, his next closest rival, who has six stops alone in the state today. Still struggling to close the gap with trump. As for the former president , hes expected to be at the state fair tomorrow. But campaigning in the coming months is only expected to get a lot harder. This morning were learning special counsel jack smith is pushing for the trial date to start in the january 6th case as early as january 2nd of next year. Thats just two weeks before the Iowa Caucuses. This is shaping up to be a very unprecedented election cycle, guys. That is one word for it. Rachel, thank you very much. Coming up, we go back to hawaii for the latest on those wild fires with gio on the search and rescue efforts, and our own becky worley, who was raised on maui, with how the neighbors are helping other neighbors. The new dramatic body cam footage and 911 calls in the race to save a 6yearold boy who fell off a roller coaster as he now reportedly recovers at home. But first back to ginger. Hey, ginger. Town, businesses, communities reduced to rubble. Lets go back to whit johnson on the ground with the latest. Good morning again to you, whit. Reporter eva, good morning to you. Were just starting to get access to some of these neighborhoods and see the devastation firsthand up close and personal for the very first time. We can smell the smoke. Some areas are still smoldering. To give you a sense how hot these fires are, in is glass just melted down into a ball. Officials now saying that this is the most devastating disaster theyve seen in the States History here in hawaii. At least 55 people have been killed by these fires. That number, sadly, is expected to grow. Hundreds of structures destroyed including many homes and businesses. In lahaina, the one ti which holds deep cultural and historic significance now reduced to piles of ash. The police chief saying they are still trying to locate as many as 1,000 people. Its important to point out though cell service and other communications have been down in many areas. In some cases those people may be okay but havent been able to be reached just yet. President biden approving a disaster declaration for the state of hawaii. The Hawaii National guard activating 134 troops to aid in efforts. Guys just on a personal note, you know that my wife andrea was born and raised in hawaii. We have many friends and family across all of the islands. Many of us have special connection to maui, specifically lahaina. Hawaii is a place where there has historically been tension between old and new. But lahaina was such a special place, where they were able to preserve these historical, Cultural Land marks. I remember as a kid i used to come visit family and friends and would play around that 150yearold tree. Just hearing their extended family in these places are impacted by this devastation has just been incredibly difficult. Still a long way to go before we even have a sense of how bad it is. Demarco . Our hearts go out to everyone impacted. Were glad your family is okay, whit. Thank you. Theres an urgent search for survivors this morning. Gio benitez is on the ground with the latest on the rescue efforts under way right now. Good morning, gio. Reporter demarco, good morning to you. Yeah. We made our way into that devastated town of lahaina yesterday. What we saw was nothing short of apocalyptic. It is still smoldering there. This morning that search and rescue effort is still very much under way. These are the most striking images from the heart of the search and rescue effort. Lahaina, home after home, business after business destroyed. We boarded a boat thursday to see it for ourselves, to tell the story of the countless people who have lost everyone. Hawaiian history in ashes. Right now we are in front of that famous front street in lahaina. You can just see it is completely destroyed. Home to so many historical landmarks, businesses, shops, restaurants and, of course, right there is that 150yearold banyon tree, beloved by so many here. When we walk through the streets, total devastation. This is as far as we can get because theyre still working on that search and rescue effort. You can just see, these were once amazing homes right here on the water on front street. Theyre just gone. And the remnants tell the story. This video taken by david ono. Cars abannoned in the middle of the street by the water. People clearly leaving those cars behind and running for their lives, some even jumping into the water for safety. The coast guard rescuing 17 people from the water and 40 survivors who were found ashore. Right now the coast guard said there are no reports of people missing in the water, but the search continues. One person who was missing steven scotts wife, telling us this on wednesday. Im trying to find my wife. I know shes safe. I think shes safe. But i havent found her yet. Reporter on thursday, we found him again. This time with his wife, finding her with the help of a good samaritan. You just happened to find someone you said with 6 battery left on their phone. He said enough to make one call. I asked him, please, let me try. So i called her and she answered. Unbelievable. Reporter but this morning theyve lost everything and are sitting here wondering what to do next. We dont know what to do now. I mean, were gonna go back and look at some ashes and then what . I mean, theres no housing available. Reporter and that is the sad reality for so many people. What happens now . Its going to take year, in doubt, to rebuild everything here. Its going to cost an enormous amount of money. Rebecca . You are so right about that, gio. It is such a relief to see that husband and wife reunited. In a moment, we will have ways everyone can help from wherever they are. Now take a look at that Historic Town of lahaina. It was once capital of the kingdom of hawaii. Now its in ashes. We have deep ties to that town at gma. Becky worley was raised on maui and shes live with more on how communities are coming together. Good morning, becky. Reporter rebecca, good morning. Maui is home. I went to grade school in lahaina. I also spent a lot of time up country in koola. Thats where we are now. There was a totally separate fire up the mountain on the slope raging at the same time. Friends and family telling me how it terrorized them as these insane winds blew across the mountain. When i came up, i found hundreds, maybe thousands of acres of burned land and forest. Pockets and neighborhoods with homes totally decimated. Even some evacuees from the lahaina fire. The people of maui starting to dig out. Its an unthinkable reality. For shalina, who with her husband and two small children, literally ran for their lives from the lahaina fire. I think the thing that sticks out the most is probably when we were sitting on the rocks and were just hoping for a shift in the wind or something to change. It was a lot. It was a lot. But, you know, everyones safe. Reporter she evacuated the upcountry area of koola which simultaneously experienced a different fire. The community here still on edge. Im here every day til they throw me out. Tree fell over, hit the power lines. Thats what started the fire. Reporter russ, who lived in his home for 40 years, said he and neighbors fought all day to keep the fire from spreading. We had a hard time holding it back. We were winning the game. Then the water turned off. Then there wasnt anything we could do. The sparks were blowing up out of the coast. Reporter a Community Left to pick up the pieces, like nancy garnett. Its too much. I have lost friends. I have been here 48 years and i have never seen anything like this in my entire life. Reporter i look around at the hundreds, if not thousands, of acres burned. Its a place where i attended high school, hiked through these hills. And while not everywhere, in places its unrecognizable, scorched, smoking. People bringing food for all of the Emergency Responders and the folks working on homes. On kolani street where six homes burned to their foundations, i see this dad looking for the wedding ring that he and his wife had in a jewelry box. Any luck with the ring . You found it . Can we see . At least one. Still looking for another one. Probably doesnt look like much now. But its here. You can even see the engraving. Were good. Its the small things, right . Reporter im reminded of this communitys resilience. We look out for each other. I dont know these people, but they were angels yesterday. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. Thank you so much. Reporter so many people asking how they can help, how they can donate. We have a qr code on our screen. Scan that with your phone and it will take you to a list of charities that are approved. Its also on our website. The maui united way and hawaii strong foundations being mentioned here on the island. I have to tell you, rebecca, its just so other worldly to be here amidst a disaster of the scale its just insane. I think of all the people in that beautiful town. When my mom and i were on the phone speaking of the town destroyed, we just cried. It felt like a piece of my childhood in ashes. And now as we think about all those people, its beyond anything that my mind can wrap around. It is beyond words, becky. We have been thinking about you and all of those people. We are back now with the Opioid Crisis and what the Supreme Court just decided about a controversial settlement meant to help those impacted. Aaron katersky has the story. Reporter the Opioid Crisis in this country has resulted in millions of addictions and hundreds of thousands of deaths. Purdue pharmas role was dramatized in dope sick. If we continue as projected i believe oxycontin could become purdues first billion dollar drug. Reporter as part of its bankruptcy settlement, they negotiated a deal to provide billions of dollars to cities and states dealing with an unyielding rash of opioid overdoses and overdose deaths. But the plan is controversial since it spares descendants of the companys founder, the sacklers, from future lawsuits. When we reach a settlement, it was a good day because it would save lives. Thats the most important thing. Was it a hard pill to swallow because it would have absolved the sacklers of civil liability . It was a hard pill to swallow. Reporter the Supreme Court agreed to consider whether the sackler families can be shielded from liability even though its their company not individual family members seeking bankruptcy protection. In a statement Purdue Pharma said its confident the Supreme Court will agree the plan is legal but admitted disappointment in the delay giving out billions of dollars communities could use to fight the Opioid Crisis. What the parents decided to do, what the brothers decided to do, was come up with a plan to abate the Opioid Crisis. Thats what they did. They got 6 billion that will go exclusively to that and go quickly to that, to saving lives, to providing narcan. Thats what the government should have done. Reporter the Supreme Court is going to hear oral arguments this december as the nation is still grappling with an opioid addiction problem. It started with pills like Purdue Pharmas oxycontin. Its great to be here with our gma3 anchors eva and demarco. Nice to see both of you. Weigh heavily on our minds and hearts is the situation in maui. And we want to get straight to those devastating wild fires. At least 55 people are dead and that number is expected to climb. Crews are urgency searching for survivors. The images are heart breaking. So many homes, businesses and beloved land marks of hawaiian history now just piles of ash. We want to get right to whit johnson, who is live in hawaii. Nice to see you again, whit. Good morning. Reporter rebecca, good morning. Conditions are improving. Firefighters are making progress. But that also means were now getting an up close look at the devastation left behind. Homes like this one, reduced to rubble and ashes. You can see the charred skeletons of appliances left behind. An oven, a stove. Of course, as you noted, the staggering death toll. Dozens of lives lost in these historic wild fires. Those numbers only expected to go even higher. This morning widespread devastation from the largest Natural Disaster in hawaiis history. The wild fires claiming the lives of at least 55 people. Officials expecting the count to grow even higher over the coming days. The police chief saying they are still trying to locate as many as 1,000 people. Doesnt mean thats how many that we have, that have passed. Im not saying that number at all. But because we cant contact them and because they cant necessarily come in to the greater valley as quickly or as much as wed like because theyre actually in shelter, until we get some of those basic things set up, were not going to have that number. Reporter mauis mayor spoke to eva earlier this morning. Closest thing i can compare it to is perhaps war zone, or maybe a bomb went off. Reporter Hawaii National guard activating 134 troops, including 99 army National Guard and 35 air National Guard personnel to aid in response efforts. Helicopters flying over the island once covered in lush greenery. Areas now resembling a smoldering desert. Were talking weeks to months in some cases to get everything fully restored. Reporter and when we talk about hundreds of people who are still unaccounted for, its important to point out cell Service Communications have been very bad in parts of the island. Officials say its possible that some of those people could be okay but loved ones havent been able to reach them yet. We were at one of the shelters overnight. They posted a list of names at the door so that people could keep track of the missing. Eva . Whit johnson for us, thank you. A lot of you at home are wondering how to help. For more on that and how communities are coming together, lets go back to becky worley who was raised there on maui. Good morning again, becky. Reporter eva, good morning. This is home for me and the stories that im hearing are absolutely horrendous. Shelly told me yesterday how she, a fourth generation lahaina resident, fled from her home. She had her husband, her 6 and 8yearold kids. They started in the car. They got stuck in all of the traffic trying to evacuate. They were forced to run to the water. They were looking for boogie boards that they could put the kids on if they had to swim into lahaina harbor. They were able at the last minute to get down the reach and run to safety. It is just horrific when i hear about both stories and i think of those that havent made it. But i do know that this island, maui, is so strong. Already people coming out to help everywhere. So many at home asking how they can help, how they can donate. We have a qr code on our screen for some of the legitimate charities that have already been established. The maui united way, the hawaii strong fund. So, you know, from all of us here on maui, thank you to anybody who can help. I just appreciate everyone is so concerned. It is awful to think about the loss of life, the loss of just a jewel in hawaii, historic lahaina town. Feels like a piece of our hearts, of our childhood, has gone up in ashes, eva. Becky worley. You say that qr code on everyones screen right now if you want to help, you can scan that qr code on your screen to give to that community that has been so up ended. So many lives hit there. Thank you, becky worley. We turn to the newly released body cam footage and 911 calls detailing the heroic work to save a 6yearold boy who fell off a florida roller coaster. The child fell off the ride. We have him on the floor. We are telling them not to move him. Are they breathing . Yes, hes bleeding from his lip, top left corner of his head is very swollen. Do not move him unless he is in danger. Reporter it happened at fun spot in kissimmee last week. He was on the galaxy spin roller coaster. The Police Report states he could have fallen from as high as 30 feet and fell underneath the tracks. Fun spot said theyve inspected the ride and they didnt find any issues. That ride is now closed while authorities investigate the cause of the accident. That boy is now reportedly out of the hospital and recovering at home. Guys . Our party in the park celebrating the 50th anniversary of the birth of hip hop is just getting started. Everyone there is all the way up. We cant wait for that eva . Time for our gma cover story and how some moms are using small amounts of psychedelic mushrooms to help with anxiety, depression, even wellness. Its called microdosing. I spoke with one mom whos made it part of her routine. This is it. Reporter this morning one colorado mom is sharing her experience microdosing with magic mushrooms, also known as shrooms. I get frustrated when people say to me, mushrooms, mommys new little helper. That is not what microdosing is. Microdosing is mommy is present and aware and showing up maybe for the first time ever. Reporter normally not the type to dabble in recreational drugs, it wasnt until a friend invited tracy to a mommy camping trip where she tried her first mushroom, at 44 years old. It was like the most beautiful confirming joyful experience i really ever had. Reporter do you feel anything . I guess relief might be one word that everyone could like universally understand. Your mood might change to a place where you feel more stable and more in a place of space. Reporter there are small studies that suggest there may be some improvement in mood. There may be, from a psychiatric standpoint, some benefits to microdosing and psychedelics but it needs to be further studied. Reporter for some, psychedelics may trigger severe psychiatric episodes. Other risks include increased heart rate, nausea, vomiting and anxiety. While microdosing is illegal in most of the country, colorado and oregon are currently the only states that have fully decriminalized the use of magic mushrooms while four other states decriminalized the drug at the local level. Tracy runs a private Community Based platform moms on mushrooms to promote the safe use of psychedelics. There is a lot of fear, and there should be a lot of fear. What i have come to realize is its the intention and the why and understanding why you do it. Reporter whats the reaction been when people find out what you do for a living and because im a mom on mushrooms . Reporter yeah, that youre a mom on mushrooms. I would say its been 98 positive and i am constantly surprised. I actually think, generally speaking, as a society, were ready for a change. Very important to tell your doctor if you plan to microdose so that you have an accurate understanding of the risks and benefits for your specific situation. For new moms, ask while shrooms are safe to use while breastfeeding. I asked tracy, are you high while youre watching your kid . She said no. Thats not the point. She compared it to coffee. If you feel it, youve had too much. Im glad you asked the question. That was the first one i was thinking. Like, wait a minute. No, not high. Okay. That is good to know. Turning to a new study about the so called magic number of steps to improve your health. It could be much lower than previously thought. Abc news chief medical correspondent dr. Jennifer ashton is here. Always good to see you, my friend. You, too. So we heard the magic number. 10,000 steps are enough to stay healthy. You say half of that now . Listen, this is the latest in that on going debate about that magic number. I dont think this is going to completely end that question, but according to this study, which looked at other data, over 225,000 people, they found 5,000 steps a day was enough to drop the risk of premature death by 48 if you took that up to 11,000 steps a way, the risk went down even more to 67 of premature death. But i want to emphasize, there have been a lot of studies that weve reported on here that said 4,000, 5,000, 7500. I think that debate will be on going. The bottom line is, in general, more is better, less is worse, just get moving. Just go for a walk. But walking isnt going to make you ripped, right . That isnt going to happen. [ laughter ] sadly, no. I wish it was that easy. Are there other benefits . Look, whats interesting about walking is the benefits truly go head to toe and from the bottom up. When you talk about from the neck up, the risks include a reduction in stress level. It absolutely is a mood booster. It can improve sleep. I think when you talk about cognitive function and brain health, were at a stage right now where that is truly just as important as heart health and musculoskeletal health. Walking is good for you. Youre right, it wont get you completely cut up, but its definitely a good exercise. Lets talk about getting in those steps. I love a call and walk. How does dr. Jen do it . How do you make sure you get it all in . At the end of the day i always think its more than it actually is. So every little bit helps. You dont have to do a 30minute walk altogether. You can do it little by little. You can get a standing desk. You can pace while youre on a call. Just get walking. Im gonna walk off. [ laughter ] bye. See you later. Good luck with that. Lets go to ginger now in central park. Thanks, demarco. It is truly a glorious and now getting loud morning. Good morning, everybody. Look at that crowd. We are so ready to celebrate 50 years of hip hop. So many people to perform. But we have to check in on the weather. As beautiful as it is here, it has been downright baking. All the way up shorty what you want i got what you need take a look at hip hops influence on fashion and culture. 50 years. Can you believe it . Thats a long time. It is. Joining us to break down some of the most influential looks in hip hop history and how we can wear them now is Vice President of fashion at Bustle Digital Group tiffany reid. Hello. [ cheers ] im very excited to be here. Of course. Good to have you here. And fashion expert joe zee. [ cheers ] tiffany, lets talk about how these two things go together, fashion and hip hop. Yes. Hip hop was really the entryway and outlet for the culture to express themselves. So if you think about iconic pioneer rappers like run dmc and their song in my adidas, foxy brown being the poster for dior and cardi b, balenciaga looks like socks. Once its in the music, it moves the needle in the industry. Should we get started . [ cheers ] lets talk about the great Missy Elliott. Joe, what can you tell us about missys influence on fashion . The fashion industry has a love affair from Missy Elliott from the very beginning. If you remember the video the rain from the late 90s. Seeing her in that blowup black trash bag inspired suit. [ cheers ] looking so good in it. Of course, shes gone on to model for marc jacobs and the gap. Shes influenced so much of what we see today. My favorite look is missy in this dior head to toe denim. We wanted to replicate it here. Instead of doing the embroidered jean we did it a cargo pant to make it more modernized. Megan thee stallion. Yes. Shes got good knees. [ laughter ] run dmc. Joe, talk about this one. They were the god fathers of hip hop. They have pioneered using street style and street wear as what we see today. We know it so well. They really started all that. I think theyve really wore every piece of iconic hip hop gear they can think of from hats to adidas track suits to shell towed sneakers and the chains. We wanted to take our model storm and do a more modernized version of it. Not all the gold chains but really focus on the track suit. That is the easiest thing to replicate and wear. So we wanted to make it modern. Storm is wearing more a neutral cream pallette. It has a fresher color pallette to it. These are a big trendy sneaker. Everybody is wearing them. We found ones to go with the track suit. Instead of opting for the heavy gold chain, we went for rings, bracelets. People are still rocking this today. Absolutely. Still looks good. Lets give it up one more time for our models, everybody. [ cheers ] one of my favorites. Lil kim. Any lil kim fans out there . Come on. Everybody. [ cheers ] what makes her fashion stand out . Can we give her credit saying shes the original queen bee . She is the original queen bee. [ cheers ] i have to say, theres so much credit that should go to lil kim because she really championed so much of what we know about hip hop fashion and style today. She was one of the first ones to really do multicolored wigs to match her outfit and logo mania. Sort of part of fashion today. It was her, mary j. Blige that pushed in the late 90s and early 2000s. Karl lagerfeld said he would design entire collection of chanel around lil kim. These are the designers. She wore a wig with the versace logo sprayed on to the wig. Thats how dedicated she is to the world of fashion. Lets bring out our model cheryl. She is wearing the lil kim look. [ cheers ] my favorite lil kim is from crush on you video. That is an iconic video that no ones ever going to forget. The all red monochromatic look was a winner for me specifically. In the video shes wearing it with a fur coat and lingerie. I wanted to make it more modern with a crop top and jeans, so that it is actually wearable. Get ready to play with texture if youre wearing monochromatic. Thats why we pulled out the leather jacket. We have to talk about busta rhymes. 100 . Can i tell you from the very beginning he always said, i dont want to wear something somebody else might have on. He was so, so much about being creative and designing his own things, sometimes making his own things. We talk so much gender fluid today. He was doing that way back when on the carpet. This is og here. At every single award show. Og. [ cheers ] totally og. Og one of my favorite busta rhymes look was the soul train awards with the striped look. Instead of opting for stripes, i went for pleats instead, just to give the illusion of it. Then the jewelry. Men are wearing pearls now that are willing to take risks. One of the biggest thing people taking risks and finding their own identity. Og. Yes, og. You guys ready to see the man who invented that look . Give it up for busta rhymes og, check him out. [ cheers and applause ] busta, did you have to come out like this . He looks good. How do you think we pulled off your look . I am gracefully embracing the receiving of my Botanical Garden of street wear. It looks good. I was telling eva earlier, its impossible to talk about hip hop and not mention busta rhymes. [ cheers ] what does it mean to you that we are here some 50 years later . I mean, its kind of hard to describe it without being emotional, do you know what im saying . I think theres really no amount of words that can describe the impact that this beautiful culture of hip hop has had on us. I think beyond, like when people think of hip hop, i think they think of the rap music. You think of break dancing. You think of, you know, slang talk or whatever the case may be. But i really think yall should really understand, from a very real perspective, that hip hop is like a real deep spirit thing. Its a mentality thing. [ applause ] like, you know, we dont really look at hip hop in the same way as we would look at religion, but its truly a culture. Its not a religion. Its a culture. We live by this. We live it. We breathe it. We sleep it. And its like, this thing saved lives, it has been the most influential culture, globally. And theres so much love here in this crowd for you.
