It took my wife has been on the computer for the past three weeks trying to get on. Were hearing so many of those stories, americans and the trouble they face trying to get an appointment to get the vaccination. Lets get to whit johnson tonight. Hes at Yankee Stadium. Whit, you reported on active Duty Service Members who will soon be helping to get americans vaccinated. How soon will we begin to see this . Reporter david, its one of the first big moves from the new defense secretary lloyd austin, approving femas request to help speed up vaccinations. That first wave of more than 200 troops will arrive in california in the next ten days with more missions to come. David . Whit johnson, live tonight at Yankee Stadium. Whit, thank you. With the news of this third vaccine, the potential new weapon, and of course also that concern over the variants already being seen in this country. We know a lot of you at home have questions, so lets bring in dr. Ashish jha. The dean of Brown University school of public health. Dr. Jha, as always, great to have you. We know the fda is set to meet February 26th right now to discuss Johnson Johnsons emergency use authorization. You have said right here on this broadcast that this single dose vaccine will be really significant. 85 at preventing severe disease, 100 effective at preventing hospitalizations and deaths. You believe a true gamechanger if approved . I do, david, and thank you for having me on. This is going to be really important. We have got to see the full set of data. The fda is going to do a careful review. Once this vaccine becomes widely available its easy to store, a single shot i think its going make a big difference. Also, there is concern about what could be on the horizon dr. Fauci and others warned for some time now that the uk variant could become the dominant variant right here in the u. S. And within weeks. We know that variant and others already detected in more than 30 states now. Are we essentially in a race against time to get the first shot in the arms of americans to try to slow down the spread and keep these variants from evolving even more and perhaps get around the vaccine at some point . Absolutely, we are definitely in a race. Im confident these vaccines will hold up to the variants. But im deeply worried that if the variants take off and end up infecting a lot of people we could see the hospitals strained again. So we have got to push hard to get these vaccines out to especially high risk people. The number of new cases is down, which is encouraging this week. We heard the Acting Commissioner of the fda say the existing vaccines will work against these variants, as you have just said, but that now is time to prepare for a future when they might not, saying, we must prepare for all eventualities. Do you agree . And is enough being done right now to prepare our vaccines to be stronger should we need that to be the case . Yeah, i do agree we have to prepare for that. We have not had the best of luck with this pandemic. We shouldnt expect that our vaccines will always work well. And that means building new vaccines that can work. All of that has got to get going right now so were ready if that eventuality comes to be. Dr. Jha, thank you. Of course theres the economic fallout from this pandemic. Millions of americans struggling to get by, week to week. And the new numbers tonight. Just 49,000 new jobs added last month. This graph shows the plunge in jobs from the peak last february. That plan advancing overnight in the senate after an allnight session. Vice president harris using her tiebreaking power for the first time. And so where does it stand tonight . Heres our senior White House Correspondent mary bruce. Reporter with Job Growth Sputtering and millions of americans suffering, President Biden today calling for swift action on his covid relief plan, with or without republicans. Im going to act, and im going to act fast. Id like to be doing it with the support of republicans, but theyre just not willing to go as far as i think we have to go. Reporter the house today voting to advance bidens blueprint after the Senate Approved it overnight, with Vice President Harris Casting her first tiebreaking vote. The senate being equally divided, the Vice President votes in the affirmative. Reporter the nearly 2 trillion proposal includes 160 billion for vaccinations and testing, help for small business, and for most americans, 1,400 direct payments. And on that, biden today made clear he will not budge. Im not cutting the size of the checks. Theyre going to be 1,400, period. Reporter he is willing to reduce the number of americans who qualify for those checks, but republicans are pushing back at the overall steep price tag. And they say the president isnt interested in real negotiations. It looks like youre pushing your agenda with the disguise of wanting to interact and then doing it 100 the direction you want to go. Reporter nearly 18 million americans are now claiming some form of unemployment. And more than 50 million people, including 1 in 4 children, are going hungry. What republicans have proposed is either to do nothing or not enough. This approach will come with a cost. More pain for more people for longer than it has to be. Mary, as you pointed out, the president has said repeatedly he wants republican support for this, but hes signaling hes willing to get it done without them. The president knows the latest polling shows he has large support from the American People on this. Reporter david, that polling shows that 68 of americans support the president s plan, including 37 of republicans. The white house today citing those numbers when i pressed them on why they think they may get republican support. But with very Little Movement in these talks and the president holding firm on the size of this bill, it seems unlikely that republicans are going to come around here. Mary bruce rounding out another week at the white house. Mary, thank you. We also have new reporting tonight on the investigation into the capital riot. With President Trumps second Impeachment Trial just days away. What happened earlier that day . As abc news obtains new video that shows roger stone flanked by members of a Militia Group the day of the deadly siege. And jon karl on what else weve learned about the hours before the riots. Reporter abc news has learned that as House Prosecutors prepare to make the case that donald trump is guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors, they are reviewing videos of Trump Associates in the hours before the riot, including this video from that morning, first brought to light today by abc news. It shows longtime Trump Confidant Roger Stone, who was pardoned by trump, flanked by members of a Militia Group. So hopefully we have this today, right . We shall see. We shall see. Reporter we dont know what the men were referring to, and stone has maintained that he played no role whatsoever in the january 6th events and said, quote, i had no advance knowledge of the riot at the capitol. These men near stone, clearly wearing the insignia of the oath keepers, an Extremist Group known to have been involved in the capitol siege. The same men are later seen in News Photographs at the capitol confronting Capitol Police officers. The House Prosecutors will attempt to convince senators that the president incited the riot with his words and actions. And if you dont fight like hell, youre not going to have a country anymore. Reporter in this video shot by new yorker reporter luke mogelson, some of the rioters make it clear they believe they are carrying out ep a [ep ] million of us out there, and we are listening to trump your boss reporter jacob chansley, the arizona man who wore face paint and horns and who allegedly left a note on the Vice President s desk its only a matter of time. Justice is coming. Reporter says that he was there because President Trump wanted him there. He walked down Constitution Avenue and entered the capitol. He was there at the invitation of and request of our president. Reporter of the 182 accused rioters facing federal charges for their involvement at the capitol riot, abc news has identified more than a dozen who have said they were just doing what President Trump wanted them to do. Like jenna ryan of texas, who told station ktvt i thought i was following my president. I thought i was following what we were called to do. Reporter another alleged rioter, Garrett Miller seen here on Surveillance Video inside the capitol said in a Statement Released by his lawyer, quote, i believed i was following the instructions of former President Trump. His Attorney Says miller now regrets his actions on january 6th and that they were a misguided effort to show support for trump. Jon, we know this trial is set to get under way in just days now. Theres still the question of witnesses. So where does that stand tonight . I know both parties agree on one thing neither side wants this trial to be a long one. Reporter david, the House Managers would like to call witnesses, but that seems unlikely to happen for exactly the reason you cite. If the House Managers call witnesses, that means the Trump Defense will likely be able to call witnesses. The trial will drag on. Democrats dont want that. Republicans dont want that, and the Biden White House doesnt want it either. Every day spent on this trial is a day that the senate is not spending on the biden agenda. Jonathan karl on this news tonight. Jon, thank you. Were going to turn next to that major Security Breach at Joint Base Andrews, home to air force one. An intruder making it onto a plane at the base.
