You can see the flames shooting from the middle of the building at the Gateway Apartments. Now the fire broke out in the East Building on davis and washington and firefighters had to rescue and evacuate several people. Abc7 News Reporter Amy Hollyfield is joining us live there this morning. How many apartments are we talking about . Two dozen apartments damaged here . Yeah. Thats right. 23 apartments with damage. Three had fire damage. The others had smoke and water. They just cannot be lived in. Those people not in their homes. The fire started on the 11th floor. Thats a long way to go when youre trying to evacuate and escape a fire. Also a long way to get up to that fire when you have to fight it. Firefighters had to help people evacuate and haul that equipment up to the 11th floor. This is the east side of the Gateway Apartments off the embarcadero on davis circle. Firefighters say they got the call before 1 30 this morning. One resident described just the franticness of trying to evacuate. The fire alarm went off this morning after 1 00. For my unit, it sounded and then it stopped. I was going to go back to bed. But i could hear people going down the fire escape. The smoke was like a movie. You could not see down the hallway the smoke was so thick. Whats amazing, the majority of people im seeing, they all remembered to grab their masks. Even in an emergency situation everyone thinking about the coronavirus and being, you know, mindful of what our requirements are. Five people suffered from minor injuries. Firefighters have allowed everyone to return home except for those on the 11th floor and then one unit on the 12th floor. 23 units in total have damage and cannot be lived in. And 5 00 a. M. Are banned in counties with high rates of virus transmission. It goes into effect 10 00 tomorrow night until 5 00 a. M. December 21st. In the east bay some Restaurant Owners oppose the curfew because it impacts how late they can stay open. Shut down is not the answer. They need to work. Amy hollyfield has more on the evacuations that took place. On the 11th floor is where this started. Thats a long way to go when trying to evacuate your home. Firefighters say there are not sprinklers in this building so the fire got a little bit of a head start on them. When they arrived just around 1 30 this morning, they worked on the fire of course but also worked on rescuing and helping people evacuate. Several people needed help getting out of here out of this burning building. They say five people did suffer minor injuries. But everyone did get out okay. We came down, we saw some smoke coming out of the buildings, the flames, all the black smoke coming up at the top. We thought it was a false alarm. I came out of my apartment, the smoke was coming down the hallway. And so people were evacuating and were now just trying to figure out what caused the fire. So, yeah, theres smoke and water damage along with fire damage here at the gateway Apartment Building. This is on davis court. We are just right off the embarcadero. And this fire started on the 11th floor in one Apartment Unit and spread to two others. So three with fire damage, but a total of 23 units cant be lived in because of that smoke and water damage. The fire chief was on the scene. She was very proud of her firefighters how they hustled up to that 11th floor. Some of them hauling 100 pounds of equipment with them up those stairs. Resorts like northstar are welcoming guests back. You will have to wear a mayes k Face Covering and maintain interesting. A new reservation system will limit the number of people on the slopes. And most dining will move outdoors because of restrictions on people gathering indoors. Robot dogs will soon be the newest members of the Security Team at floridas Tyndall Air Force base. A camera allows the operators to see whats around the dog and they can use a speaker to talk to anyone who might be trying to intrude. Officials say the robot canines will provide patrolling help allowing humans and military dogs to focus on security actions that require a physical presence.
