for tuesday. and wednesday and thursday, promising right now to be a little bit cleaner. here is a look at what is going on in the north bay. you see napa and vacaville, pretty unhealthy air there. but in the south bay, we'reg go. have you have some out door activities, now is the cleanest that the air will be all day as it will get unhealthy again. you can see that it will be warmer with 60 at the coast and near 90 inland. california just reached a troubling milestone, we have now hit 700,000 covid-19 cases. california has 706,000 cases and there are more than 84,000 right here in the bay area. the u.s. has the most confirmed infections of any nation in the world. we are approaching 6 million cases according to johns hopkins. as these numbers come in, many bay area businesses are getting ready to reopen because of the governor's new tiered systems. you can see the key on the left. yellow is as good as you will get. orange is moderate. and red is substantial. purple is widespread. and nearly every bay area county is purple except napa and san francisco. the new system means that hair salons and malls can do with some restrictions. and now students schools are applying for waivers to do in-person learning. >> reporter: and it feels like the schools are asking the principal for permission to reopen. in this case we know of 21 elementary schools here in contra costa county that have applied for waivers. they are all private schools. one rirpts that is tough for public schools to meet is the ability to test for virus abtsd ha and have the results in 72 hours. and waivers to reopen in-person classes have been glanglantglan not many in the bay area. only two so far. most in southern california. this private school, san ramon christian academy, this school has applied for a waiver and should find out 24 week if it will be allowed to reopen. because this county has said that it will aim to get those approved within three days. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. and dr. deborah birx is urging the public to, quote, do the right thing to stop the spread of covid-19. jobina fortson has what that means. >> yes, for dr. birx, doing the right thing means wearing a mask in public. she says wearing a mask can help keep our freedom by keeping the economy and schools open. >> don't wait for the vaccine to do the right thing. did the right thing today because if we do the right thing today, we go into the fall with much fewer cases. yes, i'm hopeful for a vaccine, but i'm also very convinced right now a that we can stop community spread by wearing masks, social distancing and avoiding crowds. >> close to 6 million people in the u.s. have tested positive for coronavirus since the start of the pandemic. and happening today, state lawmakers are and all the fires to the east of us are now pushing their smoke back towards us. we gave them all of our smoke last week, now they are burning the favor thanks to the high pressure from our knot anorth a to the south. and so that is why we have the wide spread smoke this morning. and look what happens as we head into the afternoon, sure it bends a bit, but still going to be tough to breathe in many neighborhoods. tomorrow morning, it will be more in the north bay and we'll have hot spots instead of widespread poor air quality. and wednesday looking like the spots will be even smaller. we'll keep our fingers crossed. good morning, everyone. i'm looking at two pretty big backups right now. we'll start with the maps and a crash i'm following in sunol that is blocking at least one lane. and it will be a sluggish ride. we're looking at 19 and 29 miles per hour, this is southbound 680 passing the andrade road off-ra. and in oakland, it is slow on 880 due to the road construction. you can certainly see all of those brake lights and the backup there. it is due to road construction that actually picked up at 6:00 and that was between 23rd and 29th avenues. but then there was also a hit and run around high street. so it has continued to backup. new at 6:00, an israeli plane has made an historic landing in abu dhabi. this was the first direct commercial flight that touched down earlier this morning. and it is a key step in what is expected to be normalized relations between the two nations. president trump's son-in-law jared kushner was on the flight and he says the stage is now set for other arab countries to follow the uae. and just ahead, many people still mourning over the loss of chadwick boseman. but people are sharing how much of a mark he has left on them. plus investigation. again, a thorough and fair investigation is what is deserved by all those involved. >> for months, he has faced pressure from activists to file charges in taylor's death. taylor died when officers served a no-knock search warrant at her home. and tributes continue to come in for chadwick boseman. >> we truly lost a super hero. a role like that is fate, but he really left his legacy, he left his legacy for us to see and learn from and that touches me the most. >> boseman died last week after a private four year battle with cancer. he spoke at the university's graduation in 2018 and howard's president says that the school was planning a project with boseman that would have brought him back to campus soon. and the message posted announcing his death friday is now the most liked tweet of all-time. this is according to twitter. and the post has well over 7 mill i don't thiion likes. i can't really even talk about it because i get really sad. and i know it is weird the south bay. in san jose, it is mostly cloudy and 61. it will be warmer across the board with unhealthy air. we have warm to hot weather this weekend, warm at the coast to hot inland where there will be a moderate risk of heat illness. so we need to be careful. and a look at the cloud cover, with a light offshore breeze, you can see some blue developing along the coast today, that will help push you into the mid to upper 60s. and in the south bay, we start 79, 83 at san jose to 89 at gilr gilroy. you were the peninsula, 77 to 80, the spread there. 64 to 67 on the oceanside of the peninsula. downtown san francisco, about 68. we have mid to upper 60s along the north bay coast to sausalito. and low to mid 80s through most of the north bay valleys. east bay shore, 80 in union city and fremont. low to upper 70s elsewhere. and as you med you head into th bay valley, 88 to 92. and so you will want the air conditioner to filter out some of the smoke in the air. tonight mid-50s to low 60s. tomorrow will be a lot like today. we'll try to bring in cooler and cleaner air for wednesday and thursday, but look at those temperatures take off friday, saturday and sunday, already thing in the morning. let's talk about what is going on weather-wise. we're on top of this also. we have spare the air. and you know that the air quality management district put out this forecast last night for today and tomorrow. unhealthy air once again. wednesday and thursday, maybe not as the winds will shift just a little bit. let's take a look at our neighborhoods right now. pap that and vacaville, sensitive to unhealthy for all of us. we have moderate around the bay to east bay and even some clean air into the south bay and just some moderate air quality in the santa cruz mountains right now. we do have a warmer afternoon on the way with mid to upper 60s coast and into san francisco. 70s to 80s around the bay. and you can see mid-80s in the south bay and north bay and the return of 90s for the east bay. but we won't stop there. got some 100s in the forecast this weekend, i'll have that coming up in the seven day forecast. the struggle of small businesses to survive amid this pandemic affects all of us this one way or another. so helping them meet the challenge is a major part of building a better bay area. a new color coding system will go into effect today giving some businesses the go-ahead to reopen. and the counties you see in yellow, they mean coronavirus spread is minimal. orange is moderate. and red is substantial. and purple is widespread. now, every county in the bay area is purple except for napa and san francisco. julian glover is live with what all of this means. good morning, julian. >> reporter: good morning. we all know how much a good haircut can make us feel good, look good and we know people are expected to get that done today. many businesses will be scrambling to try to get their r business today as they can thousand do so inside across much of the bay area. under the new guidelines, businesses like hair salons, barber shop, retail store, even shopping malls can brats operat 25% capacity. but the counties could be more restrictive than the state. and they are excited to move from outside back inside. and customers and stylists though, they must keep with social distancing guidelines and also keep those face masks on. >> clients called me and i googled it and that is how i found out. partially indoor, but i still get confusing. they say 25% of what, i don't know. >> reporter: and you can see that that stylist is just happy to reopens. and we're hearing that they will also be doing so with 25 brand new stores and restaurants. and we do want to stress that this differs county to county. for example, pretty much everybody in the bay area will be allowing the salons a barber shops to reopen. but san francisco and alameda counties are on hold for now and they will roll out the further reopening plans. so again excitement finally for business owners who hopefully will be seeing a lot more business. julian glover, abc 7 news. as julian mentioned, starting tomorrow san francisco will allow some businesses like hair and nail salons to start operating outdoors. gyms can also reopen outdoor, but they will have to wait until september 9. the city will require all employees and patrons to wear masks. state guidelines do allow more businesses to open indoors in places like san francisco, but local officials have the final say. and we know a lot of you are looking for information about where these reopenings are especially where you live and that is why we've updated our website so you can see which tier your county is in and the businesses allowed to open. you can find the new guidelines on our website abc7news.com. and firefighters are about it get more help from washington state. 200 troops are heading for the mendocino national forest to assist in the firefight. and favorable weather is helping the firefighters expand containment of the czu fire. they were able to do water drops over the weekend. the fires have burned more than 84,000 acres since breaking out two weeks ago. and they are now 37% contained. and crews are also expanding containment of the scu lightning fire to 55%. and crews expect that it will take a few weeks to bring those fires under control. officials say a lot of the smoke you've seen and smelled should begin clearing up. new at 6:00, the woodward fire in point reyes has dramatically changed the coastal landscape. the fire may have destroyed a key habitat for the mountain beaver as well as the northern spot the spotted owl. and the fire has also cleared away dense vegetation making way for other plant species crowded out for decades. and you can follow the not canceled the fog advisory for the golden gate bridge. and there is also heavy fog in the robin williams tunnel this morning. so be aware of all that. you can certainly see it. and i know mike has been following the smog and everything else going on. >> yeah, let's talk more about that smog that is out there. i'll show you just how much it has reduced the visibility, a mile around is an msan martin. and so you can see that it is thick. and a lot of this is due to the winds just off the surface that are blowing from east to west bringing smoke from the fires to the east hour way. we were sending all our smoke their wake last week and they a they are returning the fire. and so here is a look at the smoke forecast and you can see it is pretty widespread this morning through the afternoon hours. and as the high pressure starts to take over and low weakens, you can see more of the smoke sticks in the north bay and even less of the smoke will stick around for tuesday afternoon and into wednesday as those winds become a little bit lighter and just our smold esmolder smolder fires near us bring the smoke. and so we'll take a look at the hot forecast coming up, but first let's hot temperatures, some 100s, coming this weekend. i'll have that coming up. every week we see more schools now going to in-person learning. these evolvele ling changes aree of our building a better bay area. and under the newer tier system, any county listed as purple which means widespread transmission has to keep schools online until t oy r reduced transmission tier. but elementary schools can still apply for a waiver to start in-person classroom teaching. so we're seeing that start to happen in places like contra costa county. and amy hollyfield is live for us in san ramon this morning. >> reporter: all of the schools that have applied here are private. like this one, is an are san ra christian academy. this is just one of 21 that have applied. there are a couple requirements tough for the public cools publ meet. one is that they have to be able to test and have results available in 72 hours. and it is also required to have union support. and only two approvals have been granted in the bay area so far, both in santa clara county. sunnyvale christian academy and the moreland school district. about 100 schools and districts across california have been approved, but most are in southern california. governor newsom says that elementary schools can apply for waivers because younger students are less likely to get the virus and have the most difficulty dealing with the distance learning. and san mateo county estimates that it will take them two weeks to decide on approval. here in contra costa county, they are hoping to let schools know within three days. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. president is planning to visit kenosha, wisconsin tomorrow. it is unclear if the president is going to meet with blake or his family. but the governor of wisconsin is asking the president to reconsider his visit saying that he is concerned that his presence could do more harm tha every night since last sunday's shooting. right now blake is paralyzed from the waist down. police did make a few arrests but a rally on the golden gate bridge by supporters of president trump was mostly peaceful. the conservative activist group, walk away, organized that event yesterday. counterprotestors showed up but the chp and bridge patrol kept both sides apart. >> we have sat back and watched an unprecedented summer of violence as we have seen neighborhoods burn, stores being looted, people being street that is right in the downtown business district. and we can see firefighters there, it looks like several fire trucks there trying to get this for fire out. we know that firefighters from alameda county are out there right now trying to get this under control. we'll keep trackinging this and let you know as soon as we get more information. but wanted to share that this fire right now
