One Pharmaceutical Company says the phase three trials of its Coronavirus Vaccine appears to be working in monkeys. It comes as another interesting study is released involving teachers in classrooms. I spoke earlier with dr. Alok patel. Lets begin with that new research from the university of minnesota on how teachers can protect students from the virus in the classroom. The researchers say if a teacher stands directly under an air vent, the coronavirus aerosols wont spread nearly as far, and they released a video showing this. What is your take on this research . I think its a pretty elegant way to look at air flow. We know that coronavirus can be aerosolized. That was one concern about reopening of schools. Are crowded classrooms going to be properly ventilated . What these researchers did is kind of looking at Different Air flow patterns to see what was going to be the most optimal. It gives schools another tool, another option to make sure theyre protecting teachers. So if schools cant be outdoors, if they cant open a window, maybe they can point a vent down and reduce aerosolized spread. As reported this week, moderna has begun the phase three trial for its vaccine candidate. Now the company is saying the vaccine appears to be working in monkeys. How significant is this . Its a great preliminary finding, right . Obviously a nonhuman primate is not going to have the same effect as a human. We want human data. But if you think about what a phase three trial is, youre comparing the effects of the vaccine versus people who dont have the vaccine and how they fare against coronavirus. In these monkeys, the monkeys who were vaccinated, the coronavirus replicated less in their bodies, they had less of it than the unvaccinated ones. Even though we need human data, its a good sign moving forward. It would be a lot better than if the monkeys had no effect moving forward. So i think theres optimism here. President trump is once again touting hydroxychloroquine in treating covid19 in the early stages. Despite what studies have shown, we want to ask you once again, what is the latest on the research into this drug . The latest is what weve been saying for a couple of months. There is no definitive proof that hydroxychloroquine can prevent or treat coronavirus. The nih stopped Clinical Trials in june. The fda removed the emergency use authorization in july, but still there is a population in this country who wants to downplay the virus and say its not that big a deal and hydroxychloroquine is a cure or you dont need to wear masks. Weve seen this misinformation play out time and time again. There are even doctors calling for hydroxychloroquine be made available over the counter. Or saying theyve cured patients.
