Taking a look at where california stands right now with the coronavirus, the number of confirmed cases in the state is down significantly with more than 8200 cases over there were over 10,000 cases yesterday. The seven day Positivity Rate went down to 7. 8 which is under the states threshold of 8. Santa cruz county was added saturday to the states watch list. That means in cases dont drop in three days it will have to roll back its reopening. Tonight bart board dufty. They said they failed to comply with the health orders. The pandemic including the economy, a big part of that is record numbers of unemployment. Tomorrow Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell be is expected to unveil a new stimulus package with a change to unemployment aid. Some senators, though, think continuing existing benefits could incentivize people to not go back to work. Heres abc7 News Reporter luz pena to explain. Reporter Senate LeaderMitch Mcconnell calling it cares 2, the new stimulus check that includes a 1,200 stimulus check, an Eviction Moratorium and reduced unemployment aid. Stanford economics professor nicolas bloom says its time to act fast. Unemployment is at an alltime high. We havent seen it this bad since the great depression. Reporter the current unemployment aid of 600 a week runs out at the end of this week. The new proposal calls for giving workers 70 of prepandemic wages. Democrats want to spend on it. Republicans want to spend some of it, but they dont want to go up to 600 because theyre nervous about increasing the debt. They are also worried that its so much money its actually going to prevent people from going back to work. Reporter speaker of the house nancy pelosi was on cbss face the nation sunday saying the reason they had 600 was for simplicity. That delay is causing suffering for americas families. So we have been ready for two months and ten days. Reporter San Francisco beauty salon owner Tracy Stanwick says she welcomes the relief package but she wants to get back to work. We dont want unemployment. We want to open our doors and take clients. Reporter the last four months shes been doing her best to survive. But her p. P. P. Loan is running out. We need the city to step up. We need the state to step up and make a decision on what theyre going to do with the beauty industry. Reporter how much longer can the u. S. Afford to give out this Financial Aid . The americans can keep printing debt. They can do that a long time. In the short run were fine. The big problem is if we get hit by another pandemic five on ten years from now. We already have a lot of debt. Reporter both parties agree there should be extra unemployment money given out but they havent agreed on how much. That proposal and decision is expected to be revealed smiechl monday. There were clashes with Oakland Police and there was a fire set at the Alameda County courthouse. Abc7 News ReporterCornell Barnard has images and reaction. Reporter police say demonstrators set fire inside the Alameda County courthouse in oakland saturday night. Sky 7 captured another fire set outside the building. The Fire Department put both fires out quickly. Windows were broken here, and at a nearby apartment building. At Oakland Police headquarters, a group kicked down a barricade surrounding the police department. I saw a lot of intensity, you know, people are very upset. Reporter vanessa dove joined hundreds on the street. It began as a peaceful protest through downtown oakland in support of black lives matter and police reform. And against federal agents being deployed to portland, oregon, to disperse demonstrators. My grandma and grandpa are veterans. And it was just everybody who is all out and they are all so sick of this, you know, Political Police repression. Reporter later, some broke from the larger group, smashing windows and spray painting graffiti, and pointed lasers at police officers. Oakland Police Declared it an unlawful assembly, tweeting, we are asking agitators to stop throwing items and pointing lasers at offices at 7th and broadway. Mayor libby schaffe said in a statement, vandalizing our downtown gives donald trump the images he wants and the justification he seeks to send federal troops into american cities. We celebrate passion and protest, but oaklanders need to know that when they attend protests after dark, they might be providing cover for agitators who are more intent on stoking civil unrest than advancing Racial Justice. Twotime oscar winner Olivia De Havilland best known as melanie in gone with the wind. She died peacefully at her home in paris at the age of 104. And were seeing mid 60s from concord and livermore, and livermore was at 92 earlier today. And heres a look at the forecast animation so you see the widespread low clouds. It will spill in overnight once again and around 5 00 to 7 00 in the morning is when well see the thickest fog and it will pull back by midmorning for most areas. Then plenty of afternoon sunshine once again with partly cloudy conditions continuing at the coast. Overnight lows, tomorrow it will be similar to what we saw today, mid 50s around the bay. Now, our warm est spots in the inland areas will be antioch 94 degrees. And then look for a comfortable weather in the north bay as well. Low 80s for santa rosa and also napa. Really comfortable weather around the bay in the mid 70s. And then hanging onto the 90s for the inland areas. Now, a trough moves in on wednesday, but it will be very short lived, and this will bring us cooler and breezier weather. Well notice the temperature change in most inland areas. That might drop by about 6 degrees or so, but around the bay and the coast well just notice a minimal change with a slight cool down. An inmate on san quentin has died from what appears to be complications related to covid19. 62yearold johnny avila, jr. , was pronounced dead at an outside hospital. Avila was sentenced to death in Fresno County in 1996 for two counts of first degree murder. All together, 19 san quentin inmates have died of coronavirus examine more than 2400 inmates and staff have tested positive. A Southern California woman with terminal cancer is back with her family after being released from prison early because of covid19. The hurricane warning for maui has been canceled, but it is still in effect for oahu and kawhi. If it passes over it will be the first named storm to make landfall on the island. The mayor is urging them to take the thrift of the storm seriously. Meantime hurricane hannah has weakened to a tropical depression after making landfall along the southern texas coast last night. It lashed the area with high winds and drenching rains that destroyed boats, flooded streets and knocked out power. It also brought severe flooding to northern mexico. Hannah was the first hurricane of the season in the atlantic and sustained winds of 90 miles an hour. Frances joining us now with a look at both storms. Frances. Yeah, dion, in fact, hurricane douglas right now is only 16 miles north of honolulu. So it doesnt look like its going to make landfall right in honolulu, but it is going to pass very close by. And the Hurricane Force winds extend about 40 miles from the center of the hurricane. Its going so stay at category level 1 as it passes buy kawhi over the next few hours. So this is going to bring dangerous storm surge up to 2 feet and rainfall 3 to 6 inches which could cause flash flooding and even some landslides. And then a quick update on tropical depression hannah. Even though winds have dropped down to 30 Miles Per Hour right now, storm totals could reach up to 16 inches by the end of tomorrow. So this is still very dangerous for south texas and northern mexico because it could cause some lifethreatening flash flooding. Eric . Frances, thank you. 30 years ago a major turning point in opening large parts of society, the people with disabilities. The americans with disabilities act was signed into law in 1990. Deborah cook, an alumni board member of guide dogs for the blind in san rafael is visually impaired and assisted by her guide dog praline. Cook says it is important to remember ada is civil rights legislation. To change the relationship of people with disabilities to being someone who the public needs to, you know, is maybe the most important piece of the ada. Cook says before the ada she had to fight just to be able to rent an apartment when the landlord felt it might not be safe for her to live by herself. A group of ada advocates known as the encouraging people in San Francisco to take pictures of the sidewalks in their neighborhoods. They claim theyre uneven and cracked and make it difficult for seniors and people with disabilities to get around. The duck squad wants to show the pictures to city officials in the hope theyll make improvements. Coming up on abc7 news at 11 00, one of San Franciscos oldest restaurants is back open for business. The Saint Francis fountain started serving outdoor and take out yesterday at 24th can and york streets in the mission district. We opened up last week during the pandemic. Were just utilizing the outdoor space as required by law. Its been a bit of a slow opening, but weve got a lot of positive reviews from people who come by and say, were glad youre opening up. Saint francis fountain opened in 1918 and endured the spanish flu epidemic at the end of world war i. The diners owner said hell try offering limited service first, but he may have to close the historic restaurant if things dont work out. This story is excellent.
