The staff says nearly every day they have to stop more people from getting into line and the wait times can now take up to four hours to get a test. As a result the site on the cal state east bay campus is moving locations. In two weeks it will be held at the golf course and appointments will be required. For the roughly 4 million californians currently receiving Unemployment Benefits this is a pivotal week. Aid from the federal government giving an additional 600 a week in jobless payments is coming to an end. Twh while some are calling for an extension others say the money is preventing people from going back to work. Reporter for nearly five months now millions of californians out of a job because of the coronavirus pandemic have been given a life line from the federal government, an additional 600 in unemployment aid. One of those people mark kaplan who works at a kaising room in sonoma. He was happy to see the money when he stopped working in march but also surprised. It turned out i was making more on unemployment than i was working. And thats why i kind of looked at, well, should i go back to work . Reporter mark did go back to work. You have to do the right thing. Reporter but hes not alone in that dilemma. A study from the university of chicago shows nearly 70 of unemployed workers eligible for benefits receive more in jobless payments than their lost earnings. Its a number that hits at the heart of one of the thorniest debates in congress. Should the aid be extended when it expires this month . Is it helping or preventing people from going back to work . Yes, that is a concern. It should keep the overall environment in line in which this is playing out. Reporter an economist with the policy lab which has been studying the impact the additional 600 in federal aid has had on unemployed californians. What they found is that without that money about half of those currently receiving benefits, 1. 7 million californians, would be below the Poverty Level for a single person. So basically youre saying this 600 a week is pretty important to a lot of californians . It is very important especially because many of them come from sectors that are still hurting because the virus has not been defeated. Reporter theres now less that be than the week before the final checks are sent out. Republicans, including treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin have reservations. I think theres definitely more land out there and potential for really good schools especially in the higher grades. I like the trails there, and i like to bike ride. The weather is hotter there. And in San Francisco the weather is good, but usually im kind of cold. Reporter ultimately the goal is to attract a seller that is yet to put their home on the market. And let them know we have an easy process for them and a ready buyer. We can take away the fear about having too many people in the house or the process of staging and painting and doing that stuff and offer them a simple sale. Reporter twhil thwhile theyy following up on leads generated by their post card they have a message for prospective sellers who might be meeting them for the first time. If you want somebody to move into your house thats going to love your house and community the same way that you do, well be that family to fill that void. And you can visit anytime post covid. Reporter in lafayette, Laura Anthony, abc 7 news. That is really creative. You see the realtors sending out the mailers all the time but never the individual prospective buyers.
