Right there where the white tents are. But we wanted to give you this Vantage Point to show you whats around it. A park full of families and neighborhoods. From the signs to keep your windows closed to the masked staff attending to drivers, its yet another bizarre scene in our new coronavirus reality. Youre looking at day four at one of the few drivethrough covid19 testing sites in the country, and the line getting longer by the day. Having this test center in San Mateo County be in the especially sterp of the region, this could be a potential model for others to replicate. This locate at the San Mateo Event Center is an invitation only testing site, one of two in the bay area operated by verily life sciences, a subsidiary of alphabet, googles parent company. The other in San Mateo County. Everyone here had to answer an online questionnaire about their symptoms and travel history before driving in. About 130 people have been tested since the sites launched. 350 more are scheduled for the rest of the week. 12,000 have completed the online screener test. On social media platforms, some in the community expressing concerns that theyre not getting enough information about their new neighbor. Make no mistake about it. The county is trying to do its best. Remember, if anyone says that they have this all figured out, theyre lying to you. Were trying to figure it out as we go. Another point of confusion, these rvs. San mateo Public Health has confirmed that they moved 20 of them to the event center to help with temporary housing, especially those who cannot socially distance on their own. They also confirmed that two people are being housed in the rvs who needed shelter but not hospitalization. Then this newsletter went out to the Fiesta Gardens community, a neighborhood near the site. The headline, the rvs will be housing covid19 cases, that two people are in the rvs. All right. Those rvs are over there by the way. You can imagine the frustration. If covid19 cases are being housed in your neighborhood you want to know. San mateo county Public Health telling us they cannot reveal that information because of privacy reasons. In san mateo, kris reyes for abc7 news. Kris, thank you. San francisco is beginning to isolate Homeless People and some could end up in luxury hotels. The citys Human Services agency has moved four Homeless People who were tested for coronavirus into hotel rooms. Its now working on leasing hundreds of rooms over the next weeks for the homeless and first responders. Most of the citys hotels are either closed or nearly empty. The bay areas shelter in place orders all have exceptions so people can get outside and exercise with proper social distancing, of course. But in the east bay, there have been some conflicting signs. Abc7 News Reporter Laura Anthony is live in lafayette with an update on where its okay, laura, to be outside. Well, hi, dan. Its a beautiful day, the first day of spring. Im at the brionis regional park. There is a number of people out here as we speak. This is operated by east Bay Regional Parks. East bay mud also operating a number of parks and trails on this side of the bay. The trails have been open all along, but many of the parks did close initially. Some of them are now reopening, but with strict limitations. It says welcome. And i know they want to welcome us. And yet i am kept outside. For so many people sheltering at home, the ability to get out and exercise, enjoy the fresh air is key. Thats why seeing signs like these at the Lafayette Reservoir is especially disturbing. I wanted to go to the reservoir and get outside. How does it look . It looks closed. East bay mud has closed both its lafayette and san pablo recreation areas. The fear is those two facilities may become an attractive nuisance at a time when people are supposed to be keeping their distance. We with finding that with the schools closed and people working from home, we saw a huge uptick in the number of people at those locations, and we could not meet our safe social distancing guidelines. Its a pretty nice trail to hike on. But east bay mud is keeping most of its 90 trails of hiking open and available to the public, seeking an outdoor alternative, perhaps a place to reconnect with nature. You kind of have to focus on what youre seeing and what is right in front of you. And it really does clear your head i think. Earlier this week, the east Bay Regional Park District closed all of its parks. But now the district is reopening at least some of them, like oaklands robert sibley, to allow access to trails and open space, but no buildings or bathrooms. For cyclists, though, its not about whats open or closed. You need to decompress in these tough times. And yeah, this is my sanctuary. Now these are the signs that they put out here at this park. Again, this one run by east Bay Regional Parks telling you to maintain that sixfoot social distancing to cover the coughs and the colds. Now the east Bay Regional Parks district does not require trail permits. However, east bay mud does. I can tell you east bay waif iving those permits for th foreseeable future. Thats good to hear. Laura, thanks very much. Restaurants across the country are trying to find new ways just to survive. For many, that means leaning on one another. Abc7 News Reporter chris nguyen is live in the south bay with some of the efforts under way in that regard. Chris . Thats right. Downtown campbell is normally packed with many people enjoying the night life. But as you can see, thats simply not the case right now. However, there are signs of life. This wine bar, for example, is open for business. So is the sushi spot across the street. Restaurants working together to weather the storm. Many of us have been using the word tough as of late. Tough times, tough everything as the bay area deals with the Novel Coronavirus crisis. But for businesses in downtown campbell just kind of figuring out ways we can partner tomorrow to make sure that none of us goes under in this very trying time. Thinking outside the box could make all the difference. We need to be very creative in how were going get through. This we cant just sit on the couch and wonder or hope. Atsushi confidential, chef randy muster is now offering beer and dessert to go along with sushi take out, giving local vendors like frost brewing and the cupcake factory a chance to sell their products. Everyone is in the same boat. Were all scared. So knowing that having a friend just reach out, it helps all of us. Just thinking of other people and not just yourself is huge. And here you get the sense that businesses are really coming together. Trying to let people see that there is going to be a light at the end of the tunnel. Well get through this together and were doing our part to try to help out the local businesses. And Community Members are taking notice, offering whatever support they can, no takeout order too small. A bunch of Little Things add up to something substantial. It keeps people in their jobs. An emotional ride for many, who are now striving to maintain a sense of normalcy. You know, i make cupcakes. I want to bring some happiness and make people smile through this and do some celebrating at home. A tough journey ahead, but one that will hopefully be marked with milestones of strain. Ive laughed. Ive cried about 20 times a day over the last few days seeing how much support im getting from my friends. Loyal customers as well as other people in the business community. The chamber has put together a list of businesses and restaurants that remain open during the shelter in place. Well link to it on our website, abc7news. Com. Were live in downtown campbell tonight, im chris nguyen, abc7 news. All right, chris, thank you so much. Were going take a short break. Before we do that, lets give you a live look from droneview7 over the embarcadero in san francisco. The bay area under a shelter in place order so you can see very equality all along the embarcadero, right . Just a few joggers. There are of course continued allout efforts to find effective coronavirus treatments. Today South San Francisco based genentech announced the beginning of clinical trials. Theyre for an arthritis drug for patients with advanced pneumonia caused by covid19. David louie is live with the story. David . And the kristen, what genentech is doing is one example of the race to find existing drugs to treat covid19. At ucsf scientists are sharing with others about which human cells and proteins the coronavirus targets. Never have the stakes been higher. Researchers and labs at ucsfs Mission Bay Campus have been working around the clock to identify which human cells covid19 invades and hijacks in order to survive and spread. Its estimated there are 30 trillion cells in the human body. The process is to pinpoint proteins that succumb to covid19. By that theyll identify existing drugs that can interrupt that process. We sent out i think ten drugs so far, and theyre testing them in the lab as we speak. This is the director of the qualitative biosciences institute. While his lab doesnt have examples of the coronavirus, his results are being shared with labs in new york and paris that do. Some of the existing drugs being tested are fda approved to tr. T with infections rising globally, the need to identify effective treatment has disrupted the way scientists work, traditionally operating simply in silos. Thinking crisis in my opinion has brought out the best of many different scientists. They have ignored the credit that i think theyve all come together in a way ive never seen before. Collaboration will prevent duplicating efforts while accelerating the discovery of effective treatments. The technology at ucsf was developed several years ago and has been used on hiv, ebola and west nile virus. The race by this team to help covid19 patients is narrowly focused. This is the chair of the department of cellular and molecular pharmacology at ucsf. Everybody else is looking at a list of 20,000 proteins. We can look at a list of 200. So to pick the 200 out of 20,000 and to focus on those for these last two weeks and for the coming months. The food and Drug Administration today is also considering the use of plasma, blood from covid19 patients who have recovered to treat other patients. The antibodies in that plasma might help with the other patients recoveries. Live at home, david louie, abc7 news. Thank you, david. Now, if you owe more taxes to the irs, we actually have some good news for you tonight. 7 on your sides Michael Finney joins us now from his home as well with the very latest. Michael . Yeah, its a little bit of a silver lining. A bit of good news. And we hope there is going to be even better news to come in just a couple of days. Heres whats happening. The Treasury Department has extended the deadline to pay your federal taxes to july 15th. Now thats a 90day exstefnlgts however, norman golden of the golden gate society says there is a big catch. But theyre still saying you have to file your return by april 15th or file an extension by april 15th, or else the deal is off. If you dont file or return an extension, then theyre going to assess penalties and interest. Filing an extension would give you an additional six months to turn in your taxes. Many taxpayers may choose to do that since some tax preparers have shut down their offices due to the coronavirus. Now there is something you need to know, though. That was by their own choice and is not mandated by the shelter in place order here in the bay area since tax preparers are exempt. The Treasury Department may decide to push the april 15th deadline back a few more months. There has been pressure just today to get the treasury to extend the filing, not just of payments. And so the people dont have to file the extensions. Now california already took the action. You have until july 14th. Let me doublecheck that. June 15th. I wanted to get that right, to file your taxes. The actual paperwork and to pay them. June 15th is the new date for your state taxes here in california. All right, michael, thank you very much. Great information. More time is nice. Thank you, michael. All right. Lets turn our attention to the weather forecast. First day of spring, and it felt like it today, sandhya. Right be nice. For the widespread rain. Get outside countless people are pitching in now to help fight the coronavirus pandemic. But here in the bay area, one tech innovator is hoping to be a force multiplier. How he is doing it. For medical professionals on the front line, fighting covid19 is one challenge. Finding the right armor for battle is another. Some hospitals across the country are already facing shortages of critical protective gear. Right now i have people from all over the country calling me and saying there are nurses in seattle cutting bits of plastic in Conference Room with scissors and duct taping them to rubber bands because they dont have face shields. Thats when bay area robot builder and tech entrepreneur decided to jump into the fray, raising a flash army of engineer, makers and medical sterrets. In less than a week, hes recruited 15,000 volunteers charged with a single goal, producing open source designs for those in demand items. All of the open source designs anybody has ever come up with, grab them, pull down plan, have medical professionals vet them as quickly as possible. A how to on making everything from masks to surgical gloves to hand sanitizer. And once they have those designs in hand, the idea is to distribute them free of charge to micromanufacturers everywhere. Potentially unleashing a second wave of makers to knock out these items, using everything from 3d printers to laser cutting machines. Everybody from a guy with his garage to the table saw and a sawing machine and a printer to the factories in the u. S. Who are retooling. Other high profile tech movers like elon musk are already considering their own plans, but with supply lines from china possibly down for months or years, a Grassroots Army could fill in the gap. Because we need this. There may not be material coming from china to save the day. In san francisco, dion lim, abc7 news. All right. Here is another look from droneview7 live along the embarcadero in san francisco. Kristen, as we have seen all around the city and all around the bay area, things have really slowed down, thankfully. Yeah, thats a trickle of cars, but do you recall, not long ago we would walk on the sidewalk all around the wind blows we would only hold on to let go blow a kiss into the sun we need someone to lean on blow a kiss into the sun all we needed somebody to lean on all we need is someone to lean on a salute to educators doing everything they can to help their students adjust to learning from home.
