Rob is outside starting us off with the latest. Good morning, rob. Good morning, robin. A big change from yesterday where temperatures were in the 50s to 60s. Now into the 30s. Feels like 20s with snow and rain falling around new york city. Painesville, ohio, where lakeeffect snow is kicking in, eight inches down the road there. The cold air getting as far south as northern alabama, and snow falling in that part of the snow with temperatures falling from the low 80s yesterday, record high in mobile of 81 into the full 40s this morning, but out of long island, the long island expressway, snow piling up on the roofs and sides of the roads. Very difficult commute this morning, and our will reeve is in Suffolk County to tell us whats going on. Good morning, will. Good morning. Im halfway up this mountain of salt here in Suffolk County. 5,000 tons of this stuff in this location alone being picked up by trucks all night throughout the morning as well being spread around the county. All on the roads to make sure that commuters stay safe. It is going to be a bit of a grind this morning as the snow comes down and sticks on this cold winter wednesday, rob. All right, will. It will begin to pile up there. Thankfully though this is a shortlived event. It is going to stick around. The salt will be important. Cold air is coming behind it. Delineation between the rain and snow and drier air behind it. It will be over in a couple of hours, but look at these windchills this morning in chicago. It feels like zero. Its 4 degrees in detroit, and that arctic air is sliding to the east so pittsburgh will feel like 9 tomorrow, syracuse 2 degrees. It will feel like 12 in new york city and 7 in boston and winter continues to make inroads as we get closer toward the winter solstice. Spring is right around the corner. Michael, not really. Back to you. Not really. We look forward to it being over, rob, as you said. Thank you so mh. Now we go to the latest on that deadly shootout in new jersey that left four innocent people dead. Police exchanging a barrage of bullets with the suspect during the hours long standoff and Adrienne Bankert is in jersey city with the latest. Good morning, adrienne. Reporter good morning to you too, michael. Were in front of this kosher supermarket, a scene of devastation. Now, we did check in with authorities at a press conference this morning and they are saying they believe that this location was targeted because of the way the two suspects slowly drove up to the market, calmly opening the door, armed with long guns. This morning, the first glimpse of the aftermath inside that jewish market, the epicenter of that Deadly Police shootout. The chaos began at this cemetery a little less than a mile away where investigators say detective joseph seals tried to question men who may have been connected to a weekend homicide. They opened fire killing seals and fleeing in a rented moving truck that had been reported stolen. Dressed in black and armed with highpowered rifles they drove to a Hasidic Community where they entered the kosher market and began firing. All units are to maintain cover. Maintain cover at their locations. Reporter the neighborhood turned into a war zone. Local police, s. W. A. T. Teams and atf all responding, taking cover behind vehicles and roaming rooftops. Never before in my life. It was like a war zone. It wasnt just a little pistol. Those were big, big guns. There it goes again. Reporter as the gun gun battle raged on for more than four hours, terrified residents ran to safety with their hands in the air. All you heard was another hail of gunfire. Reporter 46 local schools on lockdown. When someone said get down we all ran to the side of the room. Thats where it all started. We started crying and running. Reporter Police Pulling each other to safety. Finally, the all clear, word that the suspects had been killed. Police stormed the market, discovering three other bodies, either customers or workers. The mayor of jersey city is the first to suggest it may have been a targeted attack against the citys jewish community, but mayor de blasio tweeting that this tragically confirms that a growing pattern of violent antisemitism has now turned into a crisis for our nation. After dark, more than 30,000 of the citys children finally able to leave school, rushing into the arms of their parents. My babies is okay. Reporter seals leaves behind five children and this morning is remembered for his bravery. He removed guns from the street. Reporter Law Enforcement says at least one of the suspects posted antisemitic attacks online. I will tell you this too, mayor de blasio condemning acts of antisemitism, saying they must be defeated aggressively and decisively. George. No question about that. Thanks very much. To washington now and the latest on the impeachment showdown. The House Judiciary Committee will start reviewing the articles of impeachment tonight and heres how the next steps play out. Judiciary committee will then vote to approve them likely tomorrow, then the full house will vote on them. That vote expected to take place before christmas. If the house does indeed vote to impeach, the senate will hold a trial presided over by chief justice john roberts. It takes twothirds vote to convict and remove the president from office. Terry moran is there on capitol hill. Good morning, terry. Reporter good morning, george. This is a fateful step. This isnt just politics as usual, a little bit nastier. Democrats are invoking the most drastic power in the constitution in formal articles of impeachment, ringing with phrases of condemnation for President Trump. At a raucous rally in pennsylvania overnight President Trump attacked democrats for the charges leveled against him. They are impeaching me and there are no crimes. This has to be a first in history. Theyre impeaching me. You know why . They want to win an election. Thats the only way they can do it. Reporter but democrats insist trump committed high crimes and misdemeanors. Its only the fourth time in American History it has come to this. We must be clear, no one, even the president , is above the law. Reporter House Judiciary Committee chairman Jerrold Nadler unveiled two articles of impeachment, the first, abuse of power, trump solicited interference of a foreign government, ukraine, to influence the 2020 United States president ial election to his advantage. The second charge, obstruction of congress, the unprecedented, categorical and indiscriminate defiance of subpoenas and testimony without lawful cause or excuse. Our president holds the ultimate public trust. When he betrays that trust and puts himself before country, he endangers the constitution, he endangers our democracy and he endangers our national security. Reporter republicans defending trump to the hilt. The democrats called those who supported donald trump deplorables. And now theyre trying to disqualify their votes. Democrats still cannot get over the fact that the president won the election and they lost. Reporter but democrats say if they dont act now, they allow trump to jeopardize the integrity of the next election. If we did not hold him accountable he would continue to undermine our election. Nothing less is at stake than the Central Point of our democracy, a free and fair election. Reporter so, terry, Speaker Pelosi almost certainly has the votes to impeach the president next week in the house. A lot of eyes turning to the senate. Theres really a threeway negotiation between the white house, Senate Republicans and Senate Democrats over what that trial will look like, how long it will go. Reporter that is the battleground right now. Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell is the key person on capitol hill looking for what seems like a limited, very orderly trial. The senators sit as jurors. Mcconnell wants opening arguments from managers, advocates from the impeachment from the house, facing off against the white house lawyers and then he might call a vote of all the senators and end it right there. President trump has indicated he wants a much bigger trial calling witnesses, perhaps live into the senate as well. So who wins that remains to be seen. Several weeks of association there. This impeachment debate is so bitter, yet the speaker, Speaker Pelosi and the white house were able to come to an agreement an a major piece of legislation, the u. S. Mexico Canada Free trade agreement. Reporter it was a headspinning day. You have the articles of impeachment, the democrats trying to remove the president from office, and at the same time theyre giving him one of his major victories. He said he would do away with nafta and replace it, and the democrat haves to negotiate new enforceable labor and environmental protections, signing on, trying to show that they can walk and chew gum at the same time. Impeach the president and work with him. Terry moran, thanks very much. Robin. Now we move overseas to an attack overnight on the biggest u. S. Military base in afghanistan. A powerful suicide bomb going off there, followed by gunfire. James longman has the latest from there. Good morning, james. Reporter good morning, robin. This was a powerful suicide bomb targeting a medical building near to the bagram air base. Six afghans wounded on the attack on this facility which is being built to help local people. There were no u. S. Casualties and the base remains secure. Theres not yet been a claim of responsibility but both the taliban and isis staged attacks on a near daily basis in kabul and other parts of the country, and this bomb was so big, big homes nearby were destroyed and a large mosque damaged, all this just days after u. S. afghan peace talks resumed. There are around 12,000 troops in afghanistan which President Trump has long said he wants to bring home but stabilizing this country has been a long and costly struggle and its unclear if that will happen any time soon, michael. Thank you so much, james. Now to the latest fallout from that deadly shooting at a Florida Naval base. The pentagon is taking action, grounding more than 300 saudi aviation students at u. S. Bases as they review vetting procedures. Our chief Global Affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz has more. Good morning, martha. Reporter good morning, michael. The pentagon has trained 28,000 members of the saudi military over the past several decades but they have never grounded them like this before. But the pentagon has also never had one of the trainees attack fellow classmates on u. S. Soil. This morning, under orders of the secretary of defense, the pentagon now taking immediate steps to strengthen personnel vetting for International Military trainees as well as heightened security with the spotlight clearly on the saudis. More than 300 saudi flight students now forbidden from flying indefinitely. The saudi flight trainees are spread between three Florida Naval bases, pensacola, the scene of the deadly shooting, nearby Whiting Field and Mayport Naval air station. The flight students among the more than 800 saudi military trainees who will now be restricted to only classroom instruction although the secretary has stressed the importance of the saudi partnership. I asked we begin a review of what our screening procedures are with regard to foreign nationals coming to the United States. Overall these types of programs exchanges are very important to our national security. Reporter the saudis are eager to cooperate. The Defense Attache visiting the pensacola base, the site of the deadly rampage, where Mohammed Alshamrani opened fire killing cameron walters, Mohammed Haitham and Joshua Kaleb Watson who is being hailed as a hero for alerting First Responders to the gunmans location, helping save lives. We all heard shots again, several shots inside the building and he walked out on the steps and he collapsed. Reporter cheryl, a civilian and instructor at the naval base, says if it wasnt for watson, she may have become a victim as well. If he had not come through that doorway at that moment, i would be dead. Reporter the navy is now posthumously awarding watson and the other sailors killed the coveted gold navy wings. George . What a tragedy, martha, thanks very much. We turn to the search for the military plane that went down on a flight from chile to antarctica with 38 people on board. Officials are leading an international operation, and matt gutman has the latest. Reporter this morning, the search intensifying for 38 passengers and crew members after a chilean military plane mysteriously disappeared halfway into a threehour flight monday evening. The c130 Hercules Aircraft similar to the plane seen here was en route to a research station in antarctica from the southern chilean city and officials are now considering the flight lost at sea, water frigid and waves ferocious. The chances of survival are believed to be very slim. The chilean military deploying a fleet of ships and aircraft, and to aid in the search, two u. S. Satellites are capturing images from orbit. There are really no overt indications of what might have brought this airplane down. If, for instance, there was sudden structural failure which would be very, very unusual in this kind of bird. Reporter the missing include two private contractors and one university student. The rest are members of the chilean military. And at the air base in santiago, relatives of those believed missing, comforting each other. Now, investigators are searching for a reason for this crash. The weather was good. The contestant who married ashley after meeting on the seventh season of the show has been diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder and, amy, are you going to tell us about it . Good morning. The father of two has just been released from the hospital but he says theres a lot of work ahead, and he could be facing a long road to recovery. Hey, handsome. Wow. Reporter he was the last man standing in season seven of the bachelorette. Im so in love with you. Youre the one. Youre it. Reporter the construction manager winning the heart of dental student ashley heb bert. Ashley, will you marry me . Yes. Reporter but now j. P. Rosenbaums story has taken a serious turn announcing on his instagram this weekend that hes been diagnosed with guillainbarre syndrome, a neurological disorder where the immune system attacks nerves usually in your arms and leg muscles. Rosenbaum speaking out from his hospital bed on a series of Instagram Story clips. So guillainbarre syndrome, still not sure thats how you pronounce it. Im working on it but very surreal and humbling and crazy things you do every day like picking up this phone or buttoning buttons, tying shoelaces, putting on deodorant, you cant do it. Reporter guillainbarre is a very rare disorder. Symptoms can range from mild weakness to extreme paralysis. While he didnt go into detail on his exact symptoms, he says he will need physical therapy. Hopefully plateaued and not gotten any worse and hopefully im on the road to recovery. Ive heard from a lot of people and i know that things can get a lot, lot worse, and so knock wood, hopefully that is not the case for me. Reporter on tuesday he said he was being discharged from the hospital and posting this from home. His daughter helping him with recovery and smiles. Am i okay . Youre done. Im done . Rosenbaum also says hes, quote, fortunate enough where we caught it early enough to start treatment early enough where we can start recovery and wish him the best. We do. Thank you. Dr. Jennifer ashton is here. Tell us more about gbs. First of all, it is rare. Six cases per million and most of the time we think of it as whats call ascending paralysis so paralysis or weakness that starts in the lower extremity and works its way up and most but not all cases of guillainbarre involve kg called demyelination. If you look at this graphic, it gets inflamed. Our immune system attacks it and it can suffer damage. So, again, the good news is that its rare. The bad news this, is very scary. Can it be confused with other conditions . Yes, something we work in clinical medicine on a differential diagnosis so a host of other conditions that can cause weakness and paralysis. If you look at this list, afm which has been in the news a lot, botulism poisoning, myasthenia gravis, lyme disease. Some metabolic problems. Ms. We have to go through each of these, exclude them most of the time, the diagnosis is made with a spinal tap or lumbar puncture. What is the prognosis and treatment . Most will get a return of their function. In fact, by six months 80 can walk independently. It can be fatal. To be clear, physical therapy, rehab is the mainstay and it can take months to get a full return to function. Normally we treat it with ivig which is kind of dampens the immune systems attack on the nerves but again great opportunity to learn about something. Good for him to speak out. Absolutely and most people have never heard of this. Most will never have to deal with it but great opportunity to increase awareness. As always, jen, thanks so much. Michael. All right, thank you. Now to that vegan influencer whose decision to try a 30day all meat diet is leading to backlash from her some of her 1 million followers and paula faris is back again. Good morning, again. Good morning, michael. Alyse parker has been known to try new things and push herself. Recently she was having Health Difficulties and decided to try the carnivore diet after several friends, former vegans told her of the alleged benefits. Hey, guys, my name is alyse and i love making video. To her millions of followers alyse parker has always represented authenticity preaching selflove and empowerment while also sharing her life like this intimate tour of her new home or her latest fitness routine. Along the way she also cultivated a rabid vegan fan base following a vegan diet for 4 1 2 years, but this morning many of those same fans are crying foul. Ive done a lot of crazy things in my life, but i havent eaten only meat for 25 days. Reporter she shared this video of herself taking part in a 30day carnivore diet. I did notice enough benefits from eating this way to make me want to continue eating mostly animal foods. Reporter on her Instagram Post where she shared about the carnivore diet, she said she was hearing stories from fellow vegan friends jumping ship testing out the carnivore diet and experiencing Amazing Health transformations. The reaction from her fan base was swift and furious. Im definitely bummed out by it. Reporter parker was shocked, she says, after being hit with so much outrage. This video was intentionally about so much more than diet so were all human and we have the desire to connect with each other and to build community and i just wanted this video to help break down the walls that we kind of put up and divide ourselves with. Reporter because she built her Online Community by offering vegan content, she was really conflicted to try this in the first place, but she decided that she needs to start making decisions based on whats in the best interest of her health and at first, speicher, she thought this sounded totally ridiculous. The carnivore diet, only meat and animal products but said she was willing to try anything to function properly. And she is feeling better. For her its health reasons. For others its more reasons that they dont of course we have a lot of friends who do it for moral reasons. Have you ever tried the carnivore diet . Im a carnivore. Yes, ive been doing it for 44 years. Oh. I got you beat. Ive been doing it for 48. All right. Rob, what you got . Somebody keep the bacon away from paula faris. Thats all i can say. A lot of people want animals for christmas. This reaction from these sisters that begged santa for a puppy who delivered early. Take a look. What . Aaaghhh thats a freakin a puppy. Bring him in. Theres the puppy. Shes so happy. How about that . So happy. Theyre going to take care of that. By the way, make all right, were just two weeks away from christmas and this morning, were showing you simple ways to go green for the holidays. Becky worley is back with tips for your Christmas Tree and your decorations. A lot of people think a real tree is the right way to go. What do you say to that . This is a little bit of a trick question. So, yes, a real tree is the Gold Standard for the environmental choice, so heres the best one which is actually a potted tree. You can rent these. Great for apartments. Or you can buy one. You can rent them . You can rent them in cities or you can even buy them. Get under this. Im all right. Its just a little snow. Lets talk about the green tree. The green tree is the Gold Standard if you recycle it. So many municipalities have tree cycling. If you dont know what to do call your Waste Management company and ask if they have Curbside Pickup for your tree. No tinsel, though, because that turns it into garbage straightaway. Oh, i didnt know that artificial, thats when things get confusing. It can be environment if you keep it for 7 to 20 years, and heres a tip for promise yourself youll do that. If you get a classic then you are doing the right thing or what works for you. Yeah, less transportation, but heres the thing, dont get the prelit ones because the lights burn out, and then you replace it sooner, so bring your own string of lights if youre going to go artificial. Great pieces of advice. Moving from trees to lighting lets talk about how to do that in the greenest way possible. So you know that pulling the plug is what you should do, but getting your arm in there and finding the thing, and then your arm is all scratched and things come off. You know, it happens to all of us so we leave it on all night long, so the first thing you think about a power strip with a remote. Thats what i have. Genius, right. The tree here and put the remote by the door. I click it, the lights go off. I walk in, the lights go on. Click off on, off on. The clacker. Available online. 25 or 30 bucks. And youll use them all year long. I love it. Another way to do this is to go high tech and use a smart plug, so this connects up to the wifi in your house, and then you can either set it on a schedule using an app on your phone so it turns off at bedtime and turns on when you come home from work or you can connect it up to your alexa and say, turn on the Christmas Tree so its pretty cool that you could do that. Be geeky and festive. Finally, outside. What do you say to them . To the Clark Griswolds of the world, you can use all those smart plugs if you run something inside or use one of these mechanical timers. Those are dirt cheap and really work. All right. Weve got more information for you on our website. Becky worley, great ways to stay green this christmas and we will be right back on Good Morning America. We have two clues, two little clues are going to come out right now from that door. Thats aidan. And the books go down. They didnt do it. Aidan and asher are coming out. Hi, you guys. Hi, guys. [ applause ] thank you. Hey, fellas. Thank you very much. You might recognize this little one because thats linsey davis little boy and her nephew. Theres your mom over there. This is a book that linsey davis wrote. Our linsey davis wrote this book. One big heart and i got to tell you, it really youre able to see shes so nervous with her son. Tell us why you wrote this book. Well, i just felt for these young guys growing up and all young people we needed to get a more open heart to diversity and embracing people who are more like than different and realizing were more alike than different. That resonated with my family. Thank you for this. This is your second. Second childrens book. Okay. George is up next. No, michael is up next. Im up next . Okay. Ill go. Ill go. This is a little bit of a clue right here. Chess set but this book came to me completely as a surprise. Its a memoir called all the wrong moves about a young guy who just decided to take up chess and try to become a champion. You dont have to know anything about chess or be good at chess, its funny. Its a heartwarming in some ways and about a journey of a young man. Its a great book. Nice. All right. So you got so you are going to tackle tackle is the clue. Matt, come on out. Come on out, matt. Come on out with my clue. [ laughter ] wow. [ applause ] very proud of how hes doing that. Great job, matt. Matt told me backstage, if i were a little younger he would be taking me on but thats okay. My book is a dream too big and what an inspiring story. Hes gone through so much. I was taken back by the story. He leaned on his faith and football and also an education to get himself out of a pool impro impoverished neighborhood and used his wits to stay out of trouble and excel in life. Rare point of view we rarely get to see and he was on gma a while back and i thought this book needed to be put out there to the forefront because you can never have a dream too big to accomplish. Thats right. [ applause ] all right. The microphone is your clue. The microphone is my clue and apparently something is going to drop. Im like whew. So let us know that. You guy this, is such a good read. Howard stern comes again. I was given this as a gift. I could not put it down. He is master class at interviews. His these are excerpts of his celebrity interviews. He will allow you to see celebrities in a whole new light. He peels back the layers. He is brilliant at his questioning. You know, he used to be called the shock jock. Hes so much more than that. I highly recommend if you like whoop culture and celebrities you will enjoy this book so much. Yeah, whats great about the book, we saw him took all his favorite interviews and wrote new introductioned and learn a lot. The preparation he does for interviews is remarkable. Really a great read. I love the Cross Section of books we have here. But wait, but wait, theres more. Okay. Ive got to do a little modeling. Let me let you out. Because my dress is a clue. My dress is a clue. So you wrote an amazing little coffee book. I love the slit right here. I hope its appropriate for morning. But this is about your tenyear career in fashion. Tell us about it. First of all, thank you for having me. It means a lot to me. The book, the ten years has been a manifestation of an immigrant, my American Dream come true. You know, i started my company in fall 2009 with the goal of creating beautiful fashion with substance and ive had an Incredible Opportunity to dress women like oprah winfrey, michelle obama, Kate Middleton and Sarah Jessica parker and you. I was getting to you. I was getting to you. So just kidding. There is one word to sum it up, gratitude. Two, immense gratitude. You have immense talent. Thank you so much. Okay, so now its 2020, roaring 20s are coming. What is this decade going to be like. From the very beginning i wanted to create a luxury brand with a soul which essentially means, you know, validating someone elses existence through your work that they matter. And so it was important for us to have a conversation about diversity, inclusivity and has been with us from day one so next decade will amplify that and being part of that conversation globally and so thats pretty much it then you know the reason why im doing this is i truly believe youre stronger in color by that it doesnt just apply to the clothes i make. It also means that the world is more powerful, stronger, beautiful and when it is colorful and diverse. So that is what im doing. Thats going to be 2020. 2020 looking forward to it. Better vision in 2020. Colorful diverse inclusiveness and happy. Thats ahead. Looking back what are some of your favorite books. Two book, one is more than enough. It talks about value san diego and selfworth. Elaine wetteroth. What i love from her book, she was a first in a lot of things. She said she didnt want to be the first if she was going to be the last. Think about that. A force of nature and the other one is dear america, show says antonio vargas. Defining who gets to be american and in this time it is so inspiring to read that so, yeah, those are the two books for your audience i chose. We started a book club again at gma which is great.
