After what happened on this street in san jose. A pedestrian hit and killed by a car. It happened in East San Jose this weekend. The victims now the citys 25th Pedestrian Fatality and the 56th trafficrelated fatal. Two statistics that are key to part of our effort to build a better bay area, transportation and safety. Good evening. Thank you for joining us. Im dan ashley. And im kristen sze. Part of the solution to the problems is to realize everyone has to take responsibility, including both drivers and pedestrians. Chris nguyen explains that this challenge could get worse before it gets better. A tragedy in san jose that could have been avoided. Saturday night a man walking in traffic on story road near carl street was killed after being struck by a vehicle. In this case, the driver stayed and cooperated with police, who say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors. The incident marked san joses 25th Pedestrian Fatality of the year, an alltime high. When you have more people using the same amount of infrastructure, the split changes. Urban planning expert kelly snyder says the high fatality rate isnt a surprise given the citys overall growth and dependency on automobiles. We have more people. We have more pedestrians. We have more drivers. That means statistically there is going to be a greater chance of conflict. Our challenge is to fix the environment so that everybody is equally safe. San joses Vision Zero Program aims to eliminate all traffic deaths in the city, but city officials will be the first to admit they have a long way the go. Big infrastructure changes take a lot of time. Changing the way that roads were built is a long process. As the nights get longer and the roads get wetter, the city expects vehicle fatalities to go up through the end of the winter season. To fight the spike, san jose has deployed signs like these as part of an Outreach Campaign asking drivers to be mindful. To be on their best behavior, to look out for others and not let their bad decision become somebodys fatal incident. Residents thinking twice before they hit the roads. There is always going to be some drivers that are a bit reckless. You always got to keep your guard. In san jose, chris nguyen, abc7 news. Three boys ages 11, 12, and 13 are still in a santa rosa hospital two days after they were passengers in a fatal crash on highway 101 that killed a 23yearold man behind the wheel. Witnesses say the man was driving erratically in the rain near todd road around 11 00 on saturday night. He was pronounced dead at the scene. And we have new figures tonight showing more pedestrians are being injured in San Francisco. It is the most common traffic injury in the city. A new vision zero San Francisco report set to be released tomorrow found that in 2018, there were 183 severe injuries, and 55 critical injuries there havent been that many in five years. The group walk sf says there has been at least 17 pedestrians skill killed in the city so far. In emeryville, a lab test has led to a Hazardous Materials situation. You can see all the first responders. We were told by the Alameda County Fire Department just before 3 00 p. M. Someone in a lab placed a chemical in the tub of water. It created a react and sparked a small fire, and the room got very hot. Firefighters were called in and evacuated. Everyone from the building got out safely. No one was hurt. A cal Football Player is accused of trying to carjack a Police Officer. Berkeley police say they arrested 19yearold joseph agubaju at 1 00 a. M. On saturday. He flagged an officer down and started asking about his handgun and if he could drive the officers car. At one point the officer and ogunbanjo got into a struggle. They were able to handcuff and arrest him. He is charged with carjacking and battery on a Police Officer tonight among other charges. A happy ending to a story that started in the middle of the night. A van full of mostly rescue dogs stolen. They were taken outside a Fremont Motel and recovered early this morning in an oakland neighborhood. Theyre now at the Oakland Animal Service center, and thats where abc7 News Reporter Laura Anthony joins us live. Laura, how are the dogs doing . Well, hi, theyre being checked out here at Animal Services as we speak. The owner of the van, Julie Bingham told us she routinely travels across the country transporting animals. She says normally shell sleep at rest stops so she doesnt have to leave the van. But last night she left the fateful decision to stop at a fremont hotel. I dont know if i can give him back to you. Thank you. Well call and see if you can adopt her. They were a bit agitated and some were shaking, but the more than two dozen dogs stolen overnight in fremont appeared to be in good shape as they were recovered in oakland. I gave the officer a big hug, yeah. Are you relieved . I will be when i see the dogs and i know that theyre all there. I just dont know if theyre all there yet. Oakland Police Say Investigators tracked the vans movements with its builtin gps as the alleged thief was driving in the area of 81st avenue and olive street. We were able to ping the van and the location of the van. So officers were searching the area to rescue these dogs. Oakland Police Arrested the alleged thief and recovered 24 dogs along with the van, which was dirty and dishevelled, but otherwise intact. I came down at about 1 30 or so in the morning and checked on them. Julie bingham told us she travels all over the country for her dog transport business, and that the van was left locked but with the Engine Running so the animals hat proper ventilation, food and water. Oakland police say it appears the suspect was actually driving the stolen van around town, trying to sell the dogs out of the back. The second man detained by police told us he was just trying to buy one. Tried to sell a dog from me. I tried to buy a dog from him. The next thing i know, the police came. Now its unclear at this point if any of the dogs were actually sold before police arrive. Oakland police are trying to figure that out. Theyre circulating on social media pictures of the van. Theyre asking people if they purchased an an animal this morning from the man in the white van that they need to Contact Oakland police. Some of the confusion is around the paperwork that goes with some of these dogs. That was missing when the van was recovered. So theyre still trying to figure out how many dogs she had to begin with, versus how many are here at the shelter. Live in oakland, Laura Anthony, abc7 news. Okay, laura, thanks.
