The slide closed last night at 5 00. The stretch of roadway is in the southern part of monterey county. Both sides where seen slides in the past. The bay area isnt the only place seeing rough weather. Parts of the San Bernardino mountains are buried in snow. The community of Running Springs saw several feet and roads are closed off to only local residents. Many of them are getting around on foot. The storm also knocked out power to tens of thousands of people, some of them who said they got back after a very chilly night. Take a listen. We were just out with 20 hours of our electricity being off, its pretty cold. It got down to 17 degrees. We were all cuddled up next to the fireplace. It sucked, it was so cold. I feel for them. Breaking news out of san jose, two people are dead and five injured after a crash on highway 101. It happened just after 4 00 this morning on the northbound lanes. The chp says the suspects car was speeding when it rearended a nissan. The driver of the nissan lost control and hid a guard rail. That driver and a passenger died. A second passenger were taken to the hospital. Three passengers in the suspect car were also hurt. The driver was a 21yearold man of san jose. He was taken to the hospital and faces charges including felony dui. And now to more breaking news. Police in new orleans say 11 people have been shot in the citys famed french quarter. This happened around 1 30 this morning our time. This is video of canal street, thats a popular night life area there. Two of the 11 victims are in critical condition. Police say officers were already in place for the bayou classic football game. They confirm they were within feet of the shooting but there were so many people around that it was hard to determine who was firing shots. No arrests have been made but police have dabetained a personf interest. Today is World Aids Day, to support People Living with aids and hiv. Its one of the most devastating pandemics in history. Reporter david and melinda didnt know what was about to hit them. It began when they received this unexpected package in april at their front door. I was really surprised, a laptop computer. Reporter david considers himself computer illiterate and says he would not have ordered it. I know i didnt order it. Thats the truth, okay . I didnt order any damn thing. Reporter the couple said they tried unsuccessfully to contact the shipper, simply mac. After a debt collector demanded payment seven months later, they reached out to 7 on your side. It had been bought online from simply mac. They said someone ordered the computer from an ip address 300 miles away from the couples home. The folks at simply mac suspect fraud and say someone likely stole the couples mo melinda recalls a conversation her husband had over the phone. This is the Collection Agency and we want you to pay 3,336. 70. Reporter her husband refused. So he continued to receive calls from the debt collector three times a week. Thats when melinda called 7 on your side. We contacted a firm, the loan company. It investigated and sent this letter concluding someone fraudulently obtained the loan in the couples name. Affirm told 7 on your side it determined that their information was used by a third party to open an affirm account. Upon receipt of their claim, affirm took immediate action to resolve the matter. Mercury in the fog is poisoning mountain lions in santa cruz. According to researchers, mercury is coming out of the ocean, then goes up into the atmosphere, where the fog absorbs the mercury which then passes over land. The levels of mercury is approaching toxic thresholds for mountain lions in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Another developing story abroad, this morning the suspect in fridays deadly london stabbing claimed in 2008 he was not a terrorist. But he was convicted of terrorism in 2012 and released from jail last september. He was under electronic monitoring when he carried out the attack. Here is nbcs karina mitchell. Police called to reports of multiple stabbings on london bridge. In the east bay, deputies are asking for whoever stole a dog in Castro Valley to turn it in. Castro valley news posted these photos. The Sheriffs Office says the dog can be returned anonymously with no questions asked. Happening today, a memorial concert will be held to honor the 36 people who died in the ghost ship fire. Tomorrow marks the third anniversary of the deadly fire at the oakland warehouse. In september, a judge declared a mistrial after a jury deadlocked on the Involuntary Manslaughter charges. We picked up only a tenth of an inch in the city i should say, a 16th of an inch in the city. Sfo, a tenth of an an an an the Santa Cruz Mountains and san jose getting a decent amount of rain. Its a level 2 on our storm impact scale. Anywhere from a tenth to more than an inch is yet to come, and still the wind advisories and the Wind Warnings and the Flash Flood Watch up in the north bay. So this is all through early monday morning. Here is the golden gate. You can see a bit of a breeze there. And the cloud cover, lets take you into the south bay where it is certainly soggy from morgan hill, picked up about an inch of rain. Mt. Hamilton, wet. Santa cruz looking at several inches. On the peninsula, it is starting to pick up a little bit for you, around san bruno, 280. Burlingame, cross the bay from foster city to hayward, union city, pleasanton, light showers in the north bay. Light rain from petaluma, novato, highway 101, heavier around mt. St. Helena, calistoga. In the east bay, not a lot going on from martinez, highway 4. Wet pavement, breezy winds. High 37, certainly wet up there. The focus is along the Central Coast, around big sur. It shifts northward to around santa cruz today. Thats going to keep much of the south bay into the wet weather. Here is a look at san jose with the raindrops on the lens here. And over into our exploratorium camera, looking at the gray sky. Wind gusts above a thousand feet, mt. Diablo, 40 Miles Per Hour. Temperatures are all in the upper 50s, so pretty mild. We are looking at those gusty winds along the coast. Certainly a wet day out there as we look at light amounts. So far, 24hour totals from livermore, just over a tenth. Look at redwood city. As you head up into the north bay, mill valley over 3 4 inch, over 5 inches in sonoma county, los gatos a half inch. Well add more to these totals today. We certainly are watching those winds. At the coast theyre gusting to near 50 miles an hour. Throughout the afternoon, still looking at the possibility of some very gusty winds. Here is the hour by hour. 12 30 this afternoon, weve got heavier rain along the coast. It is going to be pushing eastward across parts of the bay. We will have also lighter amounts of that rain shadow effect through monday night, looking at about 13 100ths, hayward, fremont, not that much. As you head to the north, the darker shading in the green, over an inch to nearly 2 inches in the north bay, inch. A half inch in the city. Widely varying amounts. Through the west of the week, theyre not going to on that map, were looking at upper 50s throughout the day today. The mild weather stays with us, a 2 on our storm impact scale. Weve got the enhanced rain and higher elevations, looking at gusty winds. Then things settle down by midday tomorrow. More rain is in the forecast for later on monday into tuesday. All very scattered through wednesday. But then its thursday into friday we could see heavier rain. So all in all, we dont have one dry day on the sevenday outlook. Shes taking her own steps online, in the classroom, and the international stage. Abc news anchor eric thomas shows how shes saving lives by conserving water. Shes an abc 7 star. Reporter if you think this is how High School Students spend their time, you havent met this young woman. Twothirds of the population lacks clean Drinking Water for at least one month out of the year. Reporter shes practicing a presentation she wrote on ways to save water to High School Students, Business Leaders and local officials. My project is really based on Water Conservation and trying to find a drought solution. Reporter the junior at American High School in fremont is taking ap classes and thinking about college. But all that takes a back seat to her brainchild, something she calls the gray water project. Gray water is lightly used water from sinks, showers, baths, laundries. Its basically any water that you used once in your home and you can use again. Reporter the average home produces 180 gallons of gray water per day that could be reused, not for drinking, though. You could use gray water for toilet flushing and you can also use gray water for landscape irrigation.
