80, facing a division rival, an archrival in the seattle seahawks. And this is a situation, frankly, that is new for this team. This is a team kind of like the 1112 team that came out of nowhere in peoples minds, but was building a great locker room. This locker room is pretty good. Theyve got good leadership and they work well together. Theyve been tested through a couple of tough seasons. I think its like that 1112 team that wow, these guys are really good. I think they are good, and i think theyre going to transition to being the hunted pretty seamlessly in my mind. I dont think there is a big fear of that in my head that theyre not ready for prime time, that kind of thing. You mentioed garoppolo. Even just a couple of weeks ago, i had people asking me and maybe they were asking you. Was it really worth all that money . Is he the franchise quarterback . If you had to rate his performance this season on a 1 to 10, where would you put him . A solid. A solid 7. A solid grade. And they have not asked him to go a little built last week, but it hasnt been on his shoulders. Were not rushing the passer today and our running game is not working, go win us the game. They havent asked him to do that. So he has been doing his job and doing it really well. We cant complain when things are working, and youre running the football and playing great defense there will be a time at some point where hes going have to go do that, that magic stuff that russell does all the time, Aaron Rodgers does. And people will always leave a stratus for people who cant do that who can play great football, but cant do that magical stuff. And as we watch for that, people are complaining. Your complaints are falling on deaf ears today. It could get a lot worse. You could be a jets fan or a giants fan or a lot of other teams that need quarterbacks. Monday night, honestly, as long as i live, it will be recreating those moments and that feeling in candlestick on a monday night. We tell people now because the stadium is gone. People who never got to experience that, when we played l. A. , beat l. A. They would be stomping on it. Wed be underneath the old stadium and you could hear. The thing would be moving, and you could feel the stadium move with the adrenaline and the energy. And so monday night games at home through those years, holy cow. I mean, just a rush of memories. Jerry rice, the raiders taking the record. Oh, my gosh, i i wish i was back there. Good times. Hopefully this place rocks tonight like candlestick did years ago. It needs it. It needs kind of a definitive game to anchor all the fans and everybody. Were all human nature, and we need those collective moments together where we go oh, my gosh, were you there, you know. And tonights one of those times that could happen like that. Hopefully well have one of those moments tonight. And jimmy g will have one of those defining plays where we look back years from now and say we were here the night they beat the seahawks. One concern for jimmy g, will not have his star tight end George Kittle ribble to him. He is nursing knee and ankle injuries. Talking with him a few weeks ago its got to be killing him, just killing him not to be able to play in a game of this magnitude tonight. And robbie gould, the niners kicker is out as well with an injury, a quad i believe. The niners will have a new kicker tonight. Well talk more than as we continue counting down to kick off here live at levis stadium at the top of the hour. For now, lets go back to the studio, dan and ama. Larry, thank you. Sky 7 flew over levis stadium earlier today. You see the espn crews setting up the broadcast booth for tonights game. We talked to fans of both teams, including one who is a veteran. I trust veterans day months and months ago because it had to be seattle. It had to be 49ers. It had to be in San Francisco. Everyone lined up. It was like the stars aligned. Its going to be a great game. I think the seahawks are definitely going to win. Its going to be a close game, but its going to be good. All fans in attendance will be given a salute to service rally towel, and there will be a veterans day tribute before the game. Espns monday night football coverage begins at 5 00 right here on abc7. Here is a live picture of levis stadium where its all going to happen here pretty soon. The undefeated 49ers getting ready for the huge game against the seahawks. Still not that many people in the stands. Kickoff is still a little while away, but its going to be packed, obviously. This is undoubtedly the biggest game for the 49ers at levis stadium since they played the seahawks on thanksgiving in 2014. The year the stadium opened. Both teams had 74 records heading into that game, which seattle ended up winning thanks to then seahawk turned 49er richard sherman, who intercepted two Colin Kaepernick passes. The loss prompted the beginning of a tough stretch for the niners that saw them lose 51 of the next 69 games through last season. So theyve been really on a tough streak. Thats all history now with San Francisco being the nfls alone unbeaten team. What a turnaround and story it is this season, right . Absolutely. Its been incredible. So lets get a quick check on the gametime weather. Spencer christian tracking that for us at kickoff. Spencer . [ audio difficulties ] we want to be able to hear you, spencer, so well get back to you in a bit. For now, we want to hear you about a family that is outraged after a father of six was shot and killed by an offduty Richmond Police officer. It happened at a vallejo gas station last night not far from six flags discovery kingdom. Abc7 news Laura Anthony is live at the scene. Laura, have Police Released any new details about what led to the shooting . No, really very few details. This is where this shooting happened less than 24 hours ago in this parking lot behind me at this valero gas station. Witnesses say it actually started with a dispute between two men over a parking spot. This is so devastating. Were not doing good enough. Reporter stephanie bass says her son eric reason didnt deserve what happened to him in the parking lot of a vallejo gas station sunday night. Reason was shot and killed by an offduty Richmond Police officer. I just want justice. I want to find out what happened, you know, what happened that he deserved to be shot down like that. Reporter shown here in a facebook photo, the 38yearold reason reportedly had some kind of confrontation with the offduty officer, identified by the east bay times as Sergeant Virgil thomas, a dispute that ended in gunfire. And there was a tall African American gentleman standing there with a gun in his hand and another African American gentleman on the ground, on the street. And i was like what the hell is going on . Because this guy is Still Standing there with a gun, and he is im an officer. Im offduty. Reporter Police Reportedly found at least two guns at the scene. According to court documents, thomas was the object of a federal civil rights complaint, accused of using Excessive Force and depriving a man of medical care during a 2005 incident at a richmond gas station. The case was later settled. Bind this community together. Dont let his death be in vain, oh god. Reporter today family and friends of reason gathered at the shooting season. Reason is the father of six children, a local rapper who works in local construction. Stephanie bass believes her son must not have known thomas was a Police Officer. But i really believe if he would have said that he was a Police Officer, that my son would have not been arguing back or something. Reporter now the owner of the food shop here did tell me that they did catch this incident on their surveillance system, but that that video has been turned over to investigators. Richmond police did determine it was their officer offduty that was involved, that there would be an internal review. The Vallejo Police are giving out very few details except to say they are investigating along with the Solano CountyDistrict Attorneys office. Live in vallejo, Laura Anthony, abc7 news. Okay, laura, thank you. We learn too a body found on a San Francisco golf course is that of an infant. Police released new information on the case today. They say theyre concerned about the health of the childs mother, and police are asking anyone with information to give them a call. The body was discovered on a saturday on lincoln park golf course. Police considered the death of course suspicious. Drivers in the south bay can expect a major crimp in the evening commute along the stretch of 101. Here is why. Sky 7 shows us an overturned tanker truck thats leaking fuel on southbound 101 at maston avenue in gilroy. All southbound lanes are closed and theyre not expected to reopen until 7 00 tonight. Theyre stabilizing the tanker and will have to remove all the fuel before the lanes can reopen. Bart has apologized to the man who was detained last week for eating a breakfast sandwich on the platform at Pleasant HillContra Costa Center station. We showed you the video. The man involved spoke today with abc7 News ReporterLyanne Melendez and told her the Police Officer could have hand. Ed it differently. Just about everyone has seen this video taken last week at the bart Pleasant Hill station. Steve foster of concord was stopped by a bart officer identified as d. Mccormick for eating on the platform. Bart says its not allowed because it wants to keep the system safe and clean. It would have been simple if he went up to me and hey, you cant eat on bart, nor on the platform, and i would have been informed. I didnt the platform. A statement written by bart general manager bob powers points out the officer did warn him. Quote, when the officer walked by again and still saw him eating, he moved forward with the process of issuing him a citation. Foster says thats not what happened. He never walked past me. I was at the end of the platform, so it was impossible for him to walk past me. He came straight to me from the escalator from me here. I watched him come up the escalator and make a beeline to me. When foster refused to show him his idea, foster grabbed his bag and would not let go. He admitted he said alleged homophobic slurs. I said everything i said and dont regret none of it. Fosters girlfriend was the person who took the cell phone video. When he was grabbing him and four or six officers came running up about a sandwich, i was nervous. When they turned around and grabbed him and put him in handcuffs, i was nervous. Granted, i dont take bart that often, but if i were coming through here in a hurry, i would probably miss this sign that says among so many other things, no eating, no drinking. But during the time we were there, we saw many infractions like people taking their bicycles on the escalator, going past the fare gates without paying, and yes, drinking on the platform. None of them were stopped or cited. Bart issued an apology today. Im disappointed how the situation unfolded. I apologize to mr. Foster. Our riders, employees, and the public who have had an emotional reaction to the video. Foster says he doesnt accept barts apology and is considering taking legal action against the transit agency. And we just got this statement from the bart Police Officers association. It reads in part fosters activity caused the situation to escalate and his refusal to simply stop his illegal conduct was the root cause of this entire situation. The desire by some to focus on the race of the parties and not the conduct of foster is disappointing. Now they go on to say on behalf of the members of the bart Police Officers association, i make no apologies for our officers conduct in the matter. In the newsroom, Lyanne Melendez, abc7 news. All right, lyanne, thank you. Refusing to stay silent. A terrible attack in San Franciscos chinatown has some people speaking out for the very first time. Also, pg es bankruptcy plan. It could see some big changes. And honoring our heroes. Its veterans day, and it takes a village to raise to build a bridge. To throw a baseball. To throw yourself into the unknown. To lose fear, to create hope. We believe that it takes a village of over 200thousand dedicated, passionate, driven medical and nonmedical professionals to deliver on our belief in total health for all. We are kaiser permanente. Thrive. A new lawsuit could dramatically impact pg es bankruptcy case. According to bloomberg news, a group of wildfire victims have filed suit, argui under California Law they must be fully repaid for their losses before fire insurers. The case takes aim at an 11 billion Settlement Agreement between the utility, shareholders and Insurance Companies that would pay fire victims less. Pg e filed for bankruptcy last january. The brutal attack on three elderly men in San Franciscos chinatown is prompting Community Members to speak out, some for the very first time. Abc7 news anchor dion lim explains that the effort to make change goes far beyond the city limits. Seeing it happen to someone else, you know, really made me realize how much we need to shed light on it and speak up. The video is hard to watch. Seniors in chinatowns portsmouth square are beaten and knock odd to the ground over an attempted robbery over the weekend. Its disgusting. Its the kind of attack that seems to be happening all too often. Just this past summer two seniors were viciously assaulted while crossing a street in broad daylight. Community leaders Whose Organization offered up a 25,000 reward in that case say there needs to be more Law Enforcement presence and the installation of emergency call box stations. Its not only in chinatown. Reporter in a community not known for speaking out, this woman, who doesnt want to reveal her name or identity is coming forward with what happened to her father just weeks earlier. He had a gun pointed at him, pistolwhipped, told him im going to shoot you. The one in the blue holding him down, yanking him. They punched him. Her father, who lives in San Francisco, decided to open up his parking lot business in the Central Valley to escape the crimes of the big city. You see there is a trend. Back at portsmouth square, another speaking out with no words. A silent protest led by the granddaughter of a nearly 90yearold woman who was brutally beaten and left for dead in Visitacion Valley earlier this year. Both have a strong message with or without words. It could be anybodys dad, you know . Speak up. We reached out to sfpd, but have not heard back. In San Francisco, dion lim, abc7 news. Awful. Tough to watch that. All right. Lets turn our attention to the start of another week. Its still a little hazy out there, spencer. Just a tad. There are still fires burning to our north, and some of that smoke and particulate matter continue to push down into the bay area, and weve got fog that is slow to burn off. Still a little hazy. Live doppler 7 we have high clouds moving in right now. This is the view from sutro tower looking over San Francisco. And temperature readings are rather uniform. Low to mid70s right now in San Francisco, oakland and redwood city. 59 at half moon bay. Check out the soon to be setting sun. What a beautiful view from emeryville. The sun will set in about 40 minutes from. Now 77 right now in santa rosa. 78 in petaluma. 78 also upper 70s, i should say, at fairfield, concord and livermore. And the view at the golden gate is fairly bright, but again, high clouds are passing through with that pattern and the pattern will continue overnight. Well see some fog developing along the coast overnight or near the bay as well with high clouds passing over. Another mild day is coming our way tomorrow. And it will be cooler and cloudier beginning around the middle of the week and continuing through friday, as a matter of fact. Lets talk about the all important weather down at levis stadium this evening for the niners big game against the seattle seahawks. Game time 5 15. It will be about 72 degrees on their clear skies. But later in the evening as the sun sets, it will get relatively cool, not that anyone cares because the game will be exciting enough to warm you up. Here is our forecast animation starting 9 00 tonight. Youll see fog near the coast. Maybe a patch or two over the bay. And again, waves of high clouds will pass over. But generally, we expect a clear day tomorrow. Mainly sunny skies. The fog will probably linger near the coast a little bit into the midday hours and burn away. On we go. Tonights overnight conditions, low temperatures mainly in the upper 40s to low 50s. It will be relatively mild. Again, foggy at the coast and high clouds inland and over the bay. Tomorrows highs will range from mid60s, lower mid60s at the coast to low and mid70s around the but shoreline. Mainly upper 70s inland. Possible one were to locations will top out at 80 degrees. Were talking about air quality earlier. Well have just moderate air quality in most bay area locations tomorrow. There is particulate matter still in the atmosphere, but not enough to move it into the unhealthful range. On we go to wednesday. Pretty much the same temperature range as tomorrow in our inland areas. Probably slightly cooler, though, near the coast and bay. Cooler everywhere on thursday as the clouds thicken and a hint, just a hint of some light rain to our north. Its not likely to make into it our bay area. Here we go. The accuweather sevenday forecast. Bright skies tomorrow and wednesday under relatively mild conditions. Although some cooling will begin on wednesda. It will be much cooler on thursday or friday as the clouds are thicker, and then it will start to warm up again over the weekend with temperatures warming back into the low to mid70s around the bay and inland. But thursday, thats a day well probably see some rain to our north up in the pacific northwest, Washington State and oregon. Its possible that fall in the north part. A whole 100th. The giants get a new gm. He is only 32, but he says he is ready to turn the team around. Plus, raising the roof in petaluma. An ordinary project takes on a lot of significance for the People Living inside. Hey, dan, hey, ama. Russell wilson just came out. He is behind a couple of cameramen there. But a chorus of boos as he took the field for warmups. How is this for a stat . The 49ers have 49 wins on monday night football. Thats the most in nfl history. 50 would give them a 90 record this season and a threegame lead over the seahawks. I happened to catch Jimmy Garoppolo as he was warming up a few minutes ago. Fans started screaming jimmy g, jimmy g. He kind of sheepishly grinned. He was embarrassed. He smiled and acknowledged the fans. The niners hope he is smiling in about four hours from now. Moreboos as the shouldnt mean a change in standards. Thats why thanks to you were rated number one in Customer Satisfaction by j. D. Power. A salute to Service Today at the south bay. Abc7 news was in san jose as the city held its annual parade downtown. People lined santa clara street to watch a colorful display of patriotism. There were motorcycles, groups wearing vintage military gear and classic vehicles as well. The parade is one of the citys oldest traditions, and it is also one of the largest in northern california. We saw veterans day tradition today in el cerrito. A couple of dozen youth groups got up early to place flags on graves at el cerrito lions club. Businesses in Sonoma County teamed up to honor veterans in a very practical way. The group led by rebuilding together petaluma came together to put a new roof on the rocca house. The home provides a sober Living Environment for previously homeless vets in the petaluma area, but it was badly in need of repairs. It provides us with a safe, Clean Environment to get on with our lives that weve struggled with, with ptsd. Most of us are combat vets, bring us back into the community, bring us back into life. So we pulled together my supplier from abc santa rosa and gaffe corporation and got them to donate the material, and we paid for the labor, and we put the roof on at no charge. It was a tremendous gift. We absolutely could not do what we do without the support of the community. Rebuilding together petaluma estimates nearly half a dozen businesses, including painters and Flooring Contractors jumped in, joining a small army of volunteers to complete the upgrades. The giants say they expect to finalize their search for a manager this week as they introduce their new general manager. Its a homecoming for 32yearold scott harris, who grew up in redwood city. He spent the past seven years with the chicago cubs, including the last two as assistant general manager. While he was there, the cubs went from a sub. 500 team to winning the world series in 2016. Harris says a turnaround for the giants can happen just as fast. Thats certainly the goal for us, and were going to try to compete as much as possible on and off the field to put us in a position to transform like we did in chicago. On the manager front, the giants have reportedly narrowed it down to a final two three to replace bruce bochy. Gabe kapler, astros bench coach joe espada and rays bench coach matt potrero. San francisco has a new District Attorney. Chesa boudin declared victory saturday night after four days of ballot counting determined he was ahead of suzy loftus. Kate larsen spoke to boudin today about his plans to overhaul the citys criminal justice system. Ive compassion for everybody caught up in the criminal justice system. San franciscos newly elected District AttorneyChesa Boudin Says that compassion extends to those arrested, charged with, and convicted of crimes. 75 of the people entering San Francisco county jail are drug addicted, mentally ill, or both. Until we make it easier to get help than it is to get high in San Francisco, it doesnt matter how tough we are. Were going have the same problems. As top prosecutor, he wants to institute a program similar to the one he did at the San FranciscoProsecutors Office where they interview people as soon as they get arrested. Get better information before we file charges that informs whether we file charges, what charges we file, and what kind of supervision we think someone needs to avoid getting arrested again. As for the quality of life crimes that plague city streets, boudin wants sfpd to use more sophisticated policing to make arrests and take down car burglary rings. Theyre not going to just get tourists or back packs. They might get a police tracking twice. Can you tell what folks might expect from your d. A. s office . Absolutely. My Victim Services unit will call and reach out to every victim of every crime within 48 hours of filing a new case. Boudin would like to reduce the prison population and spend more time prosecuting serious and Violent Crimes rather than misdemeanors, but he needs to start by working with the powers that be. Mayor london breed endorsed his opponent suzy loftus and the sfpd union has called his ideas dangerous. Everyone wants it to be a safer city, wants it to be a more livable city. And we have disagreements about how we get there. My idea is to identify common ground, bring people together around common solutions. Aut transition, which could take place when his term begins in january or sooner if mayor breed appoints an interim d. A. Kate larsen, abc7 n well see if that happens. Joining us now is longtime San Francisco chronicle columnist phil matier. Great to have you with us. What do you think boudins victory could mean for San Francisco ultimately . He has a lot of big talk about reform partying the system ultimately. He does. He is a child of the radical 60s. His parents were in fact members of the Weather Underground who participated in a bank robbery in 1981 that wound up putting them in prison. As a matter of fact, his father is still in prison, and he was there in prison with his father back in new York Saturday when the election returns came in showing that he was ahead. Its fascinating, because he didnt come from a law and order background on this. At all. And he was a public defender most recently. So he is sort of the complete opposite of what you usually find sitting in that job. But the challenges of that job remain. And as you just said in that piece, id like to play it again, when asked about one of the Biggest Challenges facing San Francisco. Lets take a listen. 75 of the people entering San Francisco county jail are drug addicted, mentally ill, or both. Until we make it easier to get help than it is to get high in San Francisco, it doesnt matter how tough we are, were going have the same problems. Sure. The idea we dont want to put people in jail for crimes or things that necessarily could be Health Issues like drug use and such, mental health. But whats the alternative . Now he is the Law Enforcement person. He is not the head of director of health. And as much as he would like to be that as the model, the fact is its going to come home and roost on him. Right. And so are property crimes. San francisco number one in the nation of big cities in terms of big cities of auto breakins. 60 to 70 a day. He wants to concentrate on the gangs that are behind it. He wants to put the organizers qst whether it work. He is going to be taking a theory that hes told the voters he can make work, which is less incarceration, more deterrents, and somehow make it reduced crime. And being a candidate is very different than holding the office. Its very easy to talk about the change you want to make. But when you get into a system thats been established and a way of doing things, it becomes much more difficult to actually effect the change youre talking about. Exactly. And when you move from being a candidate to being the office holder, its like going from the bullpen out on to the field. All of the sudden it strikes, it hits, its what matters you. Have to deliver relative humidities. Chesa, i talked with him today. He is looking forward to it, but this is a big, big challenge for him. Its an interesting loss, by the way, after loftus was supported by the mayor, appointed interim d. A. Its a really interesting dynamic. Really interesting dynamic. Im not sure if the mayor had not appointed suzie loftus if chesa boudin would be District Attorney. Part of his support came from people who agreed with him. Some of it, at least anecdotally is they resented the mayor trying to put her thumb on the scale of the election. In San Francisco voters respond to everything in some way. Right now theyre willing to give him a shot. He is in no rush to get into the office. He is not going demand that he gets in now. He is willing to wait. He is going to be busy for the next couple days because he is getting married this week on top of everything else. That will occupy some of his type. We wish him well, both in his job. It might be the last well he has, because once he takes that job, its definitely going to be on the hot seat. Phil, thanks. As always, we appreciate it. Big revelations from former u. N. Ambassador nikki haley about the inner works of the white house. Haley claims in a new book the former secretary of state and chief of staff tried to enlist her to oppose some of the president s policy, arguing they were doing it to interest good of the country. Here is abc reporter. Former u. S. Ambassador nikki haley slamming former secretary of state Rex Tillerson and former white house chief of staff john kelly, both appointed by the president for trying to undermine President Trump. Her new memoir with all due respect haley claims the two asked her during a closed door meeting to join them in resisting some of President Trumps policies. Excerpts released by the Washington Post writes kelly and tillerson confided in me that when they subordinated the president they were trying to save the country. It was their decisions, not the president s that were in the best interests of the america, they said. According to the post, tillerson told her people would die. Did that really happen . It absolutely happened. Instead of saying that to me, they should have been saying that to the president. Not asking me to join them on their sidebar plan. It should have been go tell the president what your differences are and quit if you dont like what hes doing. But to undermine a president is really a very dangerous thing. And it goes against the constitution, and it goes against what the American People want. It was offensive. Rex tillerson was fired by the president and john kelly was ultimately pushed out by him while haley left the administration on good terms with the white house. She is a fantastic person, very importantly, but she also is somebody that gets it. In her tenure, haley sometimes broke with the president , but President Trump is still encouraging his supporters to go out and buy her book. And kelly reacting to the charges told the post that if giving the president the best legal and ethical advice from across the government was working against trump, then guilty as charged. Abc7 was in daly city where congresswoman Jackie Speier used veterans day to remember some forgotten vets. 250,000 filipinos served in world war ii, only to have their benefits taken away in 1946. Speier has introduced legislation to make sure 11,000 or so who are still alive get what was originally promised to them. Their families and widows would also be eligible.
