And i think the first thing they should be doing is running into those dormitories to talk to students and let them know about the drugs and talk about it face the face. Abc7 news anchor kumasi aaron asked john about his splitsecond decision. That train was so close. I was thinking he wasnt going to make it. That was my thought. And just thought i cant watch him die. Yeah, its sorry. Its pretty traumatic. But at the time you know, you dont have time to think. You just do something, you know. Dont reach for your phone. Do something. Really well said. The man john rescued knew just how close of a call it was. I heard the train. I felt the vibration on the rails coming, and i could see the light coming out of the tunnel. As soon as i seen the light, i jumped up and tried to get out of the way. And i missed my jump the first jump. And i did it again. I actually felt like the man grabbed me in the midair and took me out of the way. John and rayshawn shared a hug on the platform and john shared his final thoughts with us on the air. Im not trying to sound like a hero or nothing. But if we in the world spread a little more love and take a little more action and care about our fellow human beings instead of maybe whats on the phone or whatever is going on, certainly be a better place. Smart needs to do some testing for the new novato downtown station. This holiday season, a remarkable organization that helps the underserved needs some help itself. Here at abc7, we highlight those working t make a difference in their community as part of our efforts to build a better bay area. Today i had the privilege of meeting a very special Senior Citizen who has dedicated her life to serving others. In a tiny parking lot, tucked away between san pablo avenue and the freeway, something beautiful started happening. It started in 1985. Knowing too well the feeling of being hungry. There were ten kids of news my family. We knew what it was like to be poor. 82yearold nellie mae hannon founded ecap with her brother bobby and dozens of unpaid volunteers. They do so much for the community. I thank god for them. Theyre amazing. They provide food and services to more than 200,000 people in Alameda County every year. Many who line up down the block. We serve the homeless, the some of the work class people. What they make just dont meet all the needs. I dont have any food. They take so long to give me my check every third wednesday. This year with the holidays quickly approaching, something unexpected is throwing a wrench in their plans. We dont have enough transportation to go pick up everything. Their large box van, already old and broken into countless times suddenly died. Their other two minivans are on their last legs. Its a 1998 ford. Theyve become so run down, nellies brother worries about his sisters safety. We make pickups from all over the bay area, across the bridges and what not. Will she be able to get back . And there has been times she called me, the van has broke down. Already unable to pay their volunteers, most of whom are over 70 years themselves, there is no money for a new truck. There has to be people out there who have love in their hearts that are willing to help out and to donate. Which means these seniors, who already volunteer 12 hours a day, seven days a week dont have time to fund raise. Nellies determination to serve just means working harder to serve the community she loves. God gave me this work to do or else i wouldnt be doing it. So when he tells me to quit, ill quit. She is great. She is really an angel for that community. She sure is. If you would lick to help by providing a new vehicle or perhaps volunteering, nellie and bobby would certainly love to hear from you. Got to our website, abc7news. Com. Visit takeactionpv. Com california lawmakers are planning to draft a Major Overhaul of the states 33yearold bottling recycling law. Thats right. They spurred to action after all 284 replanet recycling centers suddenly shut down, leaving customers with very few ways to redeem bottles. Lawmakers, they will consider changes in january. But for now a stopgap measure is in place. 7 on your sides Michael Finney is here to explain exactly whats changed here. We reported on it a bunch of times. Recycling centers were closing one at a time. It seems like neighborhood after neighborhood was slowly losing their centers. Then the major loss when replanet shut down overnight. It became even harder to get refund for our bottle deposits. And hundreds of grocers were suddenly legally on the hook to recycle our bottles and cans. Well, now a new state law tries to give relief to the grocers and their customers, but Officials Say its just a bandaid. I was told that i could bring back my bottles to your store, and you would give me my redemption value. You may recall barbara of pacifica trying to find a store that would refund her bottle deposits. If i brought my bottles back, then you could not give me my money back . No stores would take them. She said try 7eleven. Barbara used to take her empties to a local replanet recycling center before all 284 locations shut down this summer. It not only affected consumers, it also put hundreds more grocers on the hook to start redeeming your empties. Thats because state law requires stores that sell benches to step up if there is no recycling center nearby. I dont think the law anticipated a situation where it was the recycling centers that closed. Aaron marino of the California Grocers Association said most of the stores were caught off guard. Obviously, there is some rampup that needs to happen on their end to figure out how its going to work, where theyre going to take in the recycling. Do we need more workers to come in and sort the recycling. Youre taking this garbage inside of a store. Its not safe. And customers dont want it. The replanet led to long lines at the few remaining recycling centers in the state. And stoked fears they might be next to shut down. I have a refund coming, but if i cant take it any place to do this, i wont get my money back. Recyclers say their costs are too high and the revenue too low. State legislators said the decades old bottle law isnt working anymore, and they will update it come january. For now, they approved temporary relief. For one, they allocated 5 million to help the remaining recycling centers to stay open. Also, grocers near the shutters replanet centers are off the hook for redeeming bottles and cans. However, that reproef ends in march when they must be ready to accept your empties. Now legislators also allocated money to test a mobile recycling program. San francisco has received one of the grants and will be sending trucks out into the neighborhoods to accept bottles and cans. That program should begin in january. I want to hear from you.
