Contra costa sheriffs released some information that orinda officers were actually dispatched to oakland for part of halloween night as part of a mutual aid response. They were trying to help Lafayette Police track down a vehicle related to a Home Invasion there, but it turns out that that may help explain why officers here didnt respond to what turned out to be a deadly party. Investigators towed away a black Dodge Challenger from the orinda home where five people were shot and killed here during a house party on halloween night. In the meantime, a memorial to those who died at the party is growing in orindas School District and decades ago with dr. Martin luther king. Im disturbed that, you know, as an African American that, you know, it happened to yet another group of African Americans that for whatever reason the shooter devalued himself and devalued the people he killed. The shootings occurred during what was build as an Airbnb Mansion Party at the south orinda home, a house used exclusively as a shortterm rental. Its a home thats had problems before with large parties. So much so that the owners received several notices of violation. We have to wrestle with what you do about people that dont follow the rules. Orinda has an existing ordinance that prohibits gatherings of more than 13 people at shortterm rentals. But city manager says the city council will look at even tighter restrictions tuesday night. Is there a scenario where orinda could ban shortterm rentals period . Well, thats one of the things the council is going to talk about. There is some challenges with that that are legal, but if thats the direction they want to go, thats what well work on. And a at this point, the council will only begin exploring option, including expanding enforcement of existing rules. Weve had no update.
