Fatality. Live in hayward, Laura Anthony, abc7 news. Laura, thank you. And we have some new developments to tell you about out of the north bay. The man who confessed to killing a young couple on the beach in january, this was back in 2004, was sentenced today. Sean michael gallon received three consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole. Two for the murders of the couple on the beach in january, and one for killing his own brother back in 2017. Abc7 News Reporter Lyanne Melendez was in court today and tells us how it all developed. Lyanne. Reporter again, this happened in 2004, and i remember the impact this had on this community and up north. Now, today in court, the mother of one of the victims asked sean gallon if he had received the bible that the family had given him, sent him. He then responded, yes. That mother then said, read it. Ndsay dress her daughter was supposed to wear on her wedding day, but she and her fiance jason allen were shot one month before on this beach in jenner. Kathy katyal showed it in court to sean confessed killer. They had a future. They had a future in ministry. They had a future in their marriage. They had a future with us. My grandchildren. The emptiness of this dress is i think what i wanted to show. Reporter the young midwest couple, she was 22 and he 26, were counselors at a religious camp in the sierra. They decided to take off for a few days and ended up camping on fish head beach. It was august 2004. For years, investigators and the family believed both were sleeping when they were shot, but during sentencing today, it was revealed that lyndsay apparently knew for a brief moment what was going on. We always suspected that she was murdered second because of how cowardly this act was. But then to hear that she actually sat up from the killer himself, that was, that was hard to hear. Reporter gallon, who is now 40 years old, only confessed to the murders after he was arrested in 2017 for the shooting death of his brother inside the home they shared with their mother. To this day, gallon has never given a reason for shooting the couple. In court today, his attorney said his client has had Mental Health issues and in 2001 gallon took a large dose of lsd. According to his family, he has not been the same since. He also tried to kill another man in june 2004 by planting a bomb on his car. Both had had a previous altercation. The mans wife was injured instead. Today gallon was also sentenced for that attempted murder. Outside of the courtroom, lyndsays father showed us a ring he now wears to remember his daughter. Lyndsay and jason finally had justice toda sean galnont see t light of day again. The sad thing is that nothing brings lyndsay and jason back. He is, of course, the other victim. Gallons mother was not in court either. Remember, she has lost two sons, in essence. One, of course, was shot in 2017 and killed, and gallon, who will spend the rest of his life in prison. Im live in santa rosa, Lyanne Melendez, abc7 news. Lyanne, this had to be a difficult and emotional day for the parents. Has the family forgiven their daughters killer . But what the vision is for this to be a safe place for people who live in their vehicles, a safe place for them to park them, and a place where they can get services, too. The site is called balboa upper yards, and its a future site of 138 Affordable Housing units. But the construction on those doesnt start until the fall of 2020. So district 11 supervisor is proposing using this land as a pilot site for the Vehicle Triage Center in the meantime. After being screened, people could park their vehicles here and unlike other areas, theyd have access to bathrooms, sanitation services, lighting, security, 24 7, and staff would be on hand to help them coordinate social services. People would be able to stay here for 90 days with the option to renew and supervisor told me the goal is to help people find permanent housing. This is not going to be a magnet for people outside of the city. Were not opening this up as a way to attract more. This is more about dealing with where we are right now in that universe, and trying to address that. Reporter now, mayor london breed has committed a Million Dollars to fund this pilot program, but its not a done deal just yet. In order for this to happen at this particular site, there has to be a planning code change and approval from the board of supervisors. Reporting live komasi aaron, abc7 news. One thing they had to create was a newscast and abc7 news anchor dan ashley reports station executives werent too sure how to handle it. Imagining what local tv news would look like was especially challenging. The cameras were huge and expensive. And not suited for fast, on the spot news. The first formula they came up with was a 15minute newscast with a lot of still photos and occasional bit of film, and an unseen announcer reading the details. That lasted well into the 1950s, even as kgo tv moved to a state of the art station on golden gate avenue. The Television Industry was flourishing along with the rest of the nations economy. Theyll know youve arrived when you drive up in the 1958 eds el, the car thats truly new. He appeared in front of a big map like this and read stories ripped off the wire service teletype. William winter was kgo tvs first commentator. The station management wondered whether television was really equipped to broadcast news. The person would sit behind a desk and look into the camera and talk. Wow. Great old footage. The first type, its what the airlines and travel booking sites, they make you click to say no, i dont want this coverage. Got it, okay. Before you can check out. Thats cancellation, trip interruption insurance. Really dont like these policies. Its actually its kind of a bizarre world we live in where the airlines are essentially offering you Insurance Coverage to protect you against their ridiculous cancellation policies and fees. And even their websites say protect yourself from large cancellation penalties, buy this Insurance Coverage. Youre protecting yourself against big airline fees. Its silly. Southwest doesnt have these change penalties, change fees, they dont offer that coverage. The problem with the planes if you dig into them, they he exclude lots of things. They exclude hurricanes and earthquakes and on the medical side, if you have to cancel your trip because youre sick or a relative is sick, they dont cover preexisting medical conditions, childbirth or pregnancies. They have this clause that says kind of emotional disorder. If youre too anxious to make the trip or something, they dont cover you. Its odd how many exclusions they have given the airlines themselves. And the other big booking sites say its total protection. Its not total protection if its a long, long list of things that they dont, they dont allow. So thats one site. Thats one site. We really dont like these policies. If you go to our website, youll see kind of why we dont like those policies. Theres another plan you can buy, these are medical coverage plans where especially if youre traveling internationally. These are worth considering because in youre on medicare and youre traveling internationally, medicare wont pay any of your medical expenses. If youre in europe, if youre in asia, wherever you are and you have a problem, you get sick, they wont pay any of those costs and they for sure medicare wont pay to bring you back home should you be in an area where the medical coverage there the medical facilities there arent very good. Now, here in the bay area we have a lot of adventure travelers and ive done reports on the guys that will pick you up off a mountain and get you back home. That seems worth it. So these this coverage for medical repatriation, these are worth considering because it may cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to evacuate you from an isolated area without good medical facilities and bring you all the way back to california, say, to get the care you might need. So are those plans worth considering . I think theyre worth considering spaeshespecially if private health Insurance Coverage wont pay for care while youre abroad. A lot of planes do, so its worth consideing. Check and see what your Health Insurance plan will and wont cover before you buy this sparate coverage. If youre on medicare, i do think its worth considering, though, especially if youre in an area that doesnt have very good medical facilities. Remember, always ensure what you cant afford to lose. Do not ensure what you can afford to lose. If you can afford to lose the 200 change fee, having to change your airline, you may not be able to afford the 450,000 to get to someplace to get surgery.
